The Not Quite So Old-Ham

Welcome To Oldham Athetic AFC

For anyone who does not know, Oldham play in the Sky Bet League 1, and have spent almost the last decade there. I have tasked myself with moving them out of the league, and hopefully upwards toward the Premiership. They are predicted to finish in 20th place, so my aim for the first season is just to avoid relegation.

One of the main reasons why I chose Oldham is so I can abuse these two affiliate clubs. Both City and Newcastle already have some good youth players so I am hoping to be able to get some player in straight away.

The is the overall squad. Looks fairly solid in the middle of the park, but does lack depth in the wide positions. The position I am going to priorities the most though is the goalkeeper as I dont think Paul Rachubka is going to cut it in goal.

Pre-season and Transfers

I think the pre-season went very well for us, winning 4 out of our 5 games. We looked very impressive up top, getting 12 goals in the 5 games. Despite playing 5 defenders at the back though, we did concede 6 goals, which is a little worrying considering we played all lower league sides (other than Hearts)

Transfers

In terms of transfers there hasnt been too much activity so far. Not in terms of cash movement anyway. So far I have got in 4 players on loan. My highest hopes are for Adam Campbell who is a really excellent poacher on his day.

Lawlor is a good keeper I got on loan for City, but I have yet to play him in a match. He picked up a 4 week injury the day after he was signed! Hopefully not a sign of things to come. Need to keep an eye on his eccentricity though.

A superb player for us in League 1. Adam has loads of pace and good finishing skills. I feel we will be relying on his goals this season to keep us in the division. He got 3 goals in 3 in pre-season, so things are looking good already.

I also brought in Conor Wilkinson from Bolton to be a target man up top along side Campbell. At 6"3 he should be good in the air and hoping he will be able to hold up the ball in our direct style of play.

And finally (so far) Seko Fofana from Man City. The young midfielder has excellent physical skills, and has fairly well rounded stats. Another player who will be key this season.

A nice Pre-Season there mate and hopefully throughout the season you can use Newcastle and Man City to your advantage...what about players like Aarons, Alnwick and then maybe players like Wright and Pozo from Man City? not sure if they would go League One but maybe players to look at

Difficult Beginnings

Its not been the best start to the season, winning only 1 game in 5. I am also yet undecided on what formation to play, and nothing seems to be working that well in attack. Defensive mistakes are costing us as well, with several poor passes or marking leading to the opposition getting goals. Campbell has been disappointing thus far too, only getting 1 goal to his name.

Colchester 2 - 0 Oldham
Vose, Holman

We got undone by a scrappy corner goal, and then
Rachubka decided to go on a wander for their second goal. No idea where he was going.

Sheff Utd 2 - 0 Oldham (Capital One Cup 1st Rnd)
McNulty, Campbell-Ryce

Another corner and a penalty that went against us this time. We played very poorly and deserved to crash out in the first round of the cup.

Oldham 1 - 1 Leyton Orient
Campbell - Simpson

We got our first point of the season with Adam Campbell getting his first goal for the club. Simpson put the visitors ahead, but Campbell got fortunate after a mistake from the keeper to ensure the game finished as a draw.

Oldham 3 - 1 Port Vale
Morgan-Smith x2, Philliskirk - Veseli

Morgan-Smith put us ahead with a penalty, then Veseli equalised with a shot that should not have beaten Lawlor. Philliskirk finished of a well worked goal with his head before Morgan-Smith got his second to ensure we got the victory.

Preston 3 - 2 Oldham
Gallagher, Robertson, Humphrey - Intima, Wilson

After being 2-0 up at half time I was disgusted that we didnt even go home with a point! New loan signing Intima got himself a goal on his debut though.

Doncaster 1 - 1 Oldham
Robinson - Wabara (O.G)

A scrapy game which we took the lead through an own goal. We were unable to keep the victory though after a shocking pass let Robinson through to apply an easy finish.

16th Position. Not bad, but not great either.

Thinking of trying out the new streaming feature to if anyone is interested?
