RONALDO LUIS NAZARIO DE LIMA

"THE PHENOMENON"

He was a beast of a player but can he be a beast of a manager?? After seeing his playing career being ravaged by injury (343 games 247 goals in club football, 98 games and 62 goals for Brazil) he is eager to have a fulfilling managerial career. Not that he didnt win much in his playing days with Cruzeiro, PSV, Barcelona, Inter Milan, Real Madrid, AC Milan and Corinthians.............

World Cup Winner x2
Copa America Winner x2
Confederations Cup Winner x1
UEFA Cup Winner x1
UEFA Cup Winners Cup Winner x1
Intercontinental Cup Winner x1
La Liga Winner x1
Copa del Rey Winner x1
Spanish Super Cup Winner x1
Dutch Cup Winner x1
Copa do Brasil Winner x2
State Championship Winner x2

Not only that but he was World Player of the Year twice, is the record scorer at the World Cup and won a European Golden Boot amongst others.

Always follow your Bilbao seasons so will do the same here. Can never get my head round Brazilian leagues though.

SANTOS FC

Arguably the most famous club in Brazil they had their heyday in the 60s as they had a certain Pele amongst their ranks and won 5 successive Brazilian Serie A titles but the fact that they have only won it 3 times since (they have won it the most times alongside Palmeiras) shows that they have struggled a bit since although a couple of years ago a Neymar inspired Santos side won the Copa Libertadores.

I have decided to do a Brazilian save as not many people have had stories from South America and with the sheer amount of games you have to manage in Brazil (19 games state Championship, 38 Serie A plus the Brazilian Cup and any continental comps) I cant blame them!

I hope to dominate South America, become the Brazil manager and who knows I might even discover the new Pele!!! (although why not aim higher and find the new Aitor Herrera..........................)

PRE-SEASON (JANUARY 2013)

Upon taking the job I discovered that we are predicted to finish 10th this season in the league so that tells me there is work to do. I am still currently trying to overhaul my backroom staff but amongst the changes was moving Pele's son, Edinho, from a scout to a goalkeeping coach.

Player wise I have a very young team with some excellent young prospects. The likes of Gabriel Barbosa, Gustavo Henrique, Emerson, Alison, Victor Andrade and Lucas Otavio look great and they are just the ones in the first team!!!!

As for the senior players they have Leandro Damiao (I didnt know they signed him recently - a nice surprise), Arouca and Edu Dracena.

--

PLAYERS IN

All 3 were brought in on a free transfer. Otavio will be in the senior squad, Marco Antonio in the reserves and Felipe Araruna in the youths. I have a budget of 5m but with the amount of players in the youth team and with the State Championship starting so early I am still trying to asess my squad!!!

--

PLAYERS OUT

My experienced keeper Aranha left to join Maritimo in Portugal for 500k while I received 62k from Braga for Anderson Carvalho. I released veterans Leo and Renato while I loaned out a couple of players and cancelled a couple of loans.

--

FIRST TEAM

I am not 100% set on my starting XI but this is what I think it will be............

Gabriel Gasparotto

Emerson - Edu Dracena - Gustavo Henrique - Cicinho

Arouca - Alison

Thiago Ribeiro (LW) - Gabriel Barbosa - Geuvanio (RW)

Leandro Damiao

Definitely following, good luck!

JANUARY

SAO PAULO STATE CHAMPIONSHIP

Santos 3 (Jubal 53, Rildo 69, Matheus Augusto 88)
Botafogo (SP) 1 (William 78)

This is not the famous Botafogo but the Sao Paulo non-league version. I played a young backup side here and they did a fine job.

--

Palmeiras 2 (Serginho 26, Vinicius 69)
Santos 2 (Thiago Ribeiro 7, Emerson 25)

I am gutted that we threw away a 2 goal lead but I would have taken a point before kick-off. Palmeiras are one of our fiercest rivals and have won the Serie A 8 times which is a record shared with ourselves.

--

Santos 4 (Jubal 2, Leandro Damiao 29, 45, 85pen)
Paulista 0

Paulista are another non-league side.

SUMMARY

A decent start to my management career as we got 7pts out of 9. The 2 non-league sides were beaten comfortably while we played out a draw against rivals Palmeiras.

I would love to get a settled team out but with the games coming thick and fast squad rotation is required. To be honest that was one of the reasons why I wanted to manage in Brazil as my youngsters would get plenty of games but I dont know my squad fully yet so it is difficult to judge!!!!

FEBRUARY

SAO PAULO STATE CHAMPIONSHIP

Santos 2 (Gabriel Barbosa 39, Giva 59)
Ponte Preta 1 (Andre Lima 14)

I am pleased with this win as Ponte Preta are a fellow Serie A side.

--

Linense (SP) 1 (Anselmo 36)
Santos 3 (Gustavo Henrique 19, Edu Dracena 45, Rildo 54)

This was a fiery affair against non-league Linense as there were 10 yellow cards and 2 red cards shown. Rildo came off the bench and scored with his 1st touch after a tactical reshuffle following Geuvanio's red card.

--

Portuguesa 2 (Henrique 54. Romao 74)

Santos 2 (Thiago Ribeiro 14, Leonardo Cittadini 86)

Portuguesa are a top division side but after looking at their starting lineup this should have been a victory.

--

Santos 2 (Thiago Ribeiro 9, Gustavo Henrique 76)
Comercial (SP) 1 (Bruno Soares 50)

This was pretty shocking. Comercial have 8 players, 2 are injured and 4 are on loan yet we struggled to get the points. Leandro Damiao, apart from one game, has been shocking so far.

--

Oeste 3 (Bruno Neves 10, 70, Reinaldo 14)
Santos 4 (Edu Dracena 28, Geuvanio 47, Gabriel Barbosa 73, Victor Andrade 77)

Oeste are a Serie B side and if the sides at that level are all so tough to beat then this save will be much more competitive than I first thought!

SUMMARY

Month number 2 is done and we are still unbeaten however we are being made to go all the way by the so called lesser teams. That said in my first XI Gasparotto, Henrique, Emerson and Barbosa are all teenagers and with only 4 players in my first team squad aged 24 or over I suppose I should expect to see inconsistency.

Leandro Damiao, the main man in my side has been rubbish!!!!!! lol

MARCH

SAO PAULO STATE CHAMPIONSHIP

Corinthians 2 (Danilo 19, Romarinho 74)
Santos 2 (Gabriel Barbosa 15, Leandro Damiao 25)

A decent result against the State Championship leaders although we had a 4th minute goal disallowed.

--

Santos 3 (Leandro Damiao 14, Neto 23, Gabriel Barbosa 27)
Ituano 0

We go top of the table with victory here.

--

Santos 3 (Thiago Ribeiro 1, 10, Geuvanio 45)
Bragantino 0

--

XV de Piracicaba 1 (Danilo Sacrimento 66)
Santos 2 (Leandro Damiao 15, Thiego Ribeiro 77)

--

Penapolense 1 (Douglas Tanque 37)
Santos 4 (Gabriel Barbosa 11pen, 21pen, Geuvanio 23, Leonardo Cittadini 84)

Another easy win and one of the first performances where I can see we are heading to the level that I expect.

--

Santos 2 (Leandro Damiao 30, Bruno Peres 44)
Gremio Osasco Audax 1 (Thiago Silvy 69)

We should have won this by a lot more. Sao Paulo drew so we extend our lead at the top.

--

Santos 2 (Gabriel Barbosa 60, Leandro Damiao 65)
Atletico Sorocaba 0

Our opponents are non-league bur are in a play-off space at the minute. They have the former Borussia Dortmund striker Ewerthon in their ranks. We are now 6pts clear and have secured a play-off spot.

We are still unbeaten!!! It looks as though we will finish top of the pile in the State Championship but can we win the all important play-offs?? Gabriel Barbosa at the age of 16 was immense this month as was the more experienced Thiago Ribeiro.

this story looks very interesting as i didnt know about the sheer number of games in brazil. are there any transfer restrictions in the country such as the number of foreigners you are allowed?

The matchday squad cant have more than 5 foreign players.

In the State Championship we have 19 games and then play-offs (no idea if it is 2 legs or not)
The Brazilian League is a 38 game campaign
The Brazilian Cup is a 2 legged affair and we start in round 1 (no idea how many rounds - can see up to round 4 and no QFs in sight!!!)
God knows how many Continental games and Super Cup games I could play!!!!

wow thats an incredible number of games to play every year. after following your bilbao stories and seeing how you like to win every competition in the same year its going to be interesting to see whether you can do that here. you are going to need a lot of depth in your squad in order to rotate the starting 11 in the different competitions. im sure its different for each team in the league but what is the financial structure like. will you be able to keep your bigger players at the club or will you be forced to offload them to european clubs in order to keep the club running

APRIL

Copa do Brasil 1st Round
Sergipe 0
Santos 3 (Leonardo Cittadini 14, Thiago Ribeiro 24, Leandro Damiao 32)

--

Santos 4 (Thiago Ribeiro 27, 71, Gabriel Barbosa 56, 64)
Sao Bernardo 3 (Gil 5, Erick Flores 33, Bady 78)

This was an entertaining affair but we just managed to come out on top as my new signing Allione made his debut. Unfortunately Cicinho got injured and will be out for a couple of months.

--

Mogi Mirim 2 (Everton Heleno 70, Magrao 89)
Santos 7 (Emerson 7, Thiago Ribeiro 35, Leandro Damiao 38, 46, Gustavo Henrique 44, Allione 56, Gabriel Barbosa 71)

What a win this is!!! Mogi Mirim is the club where Rivaldo ended his playing days and are in Serie C but we absolutely destroyed them here thanks to Agustin Allione who set up 4 goals and scored 1.

--

Sao Paulo 3 (Alexandre Pato 21, 58, 90)
Santos 2 (Geuvanio 2, Thiago Ribeiro 48)

My first defeat as manager of Santos and it was fully deserved as they had over 20 attempts to our 4!! That said, Sao Paulo amazingly had only conceded 2 goals before this match so we doubled that here.

--

Santos 5 (Thiago Ribeiro 6, Gabriel Barbosa 11, 37, 48pen, Edu Dracena 63)
Rio Claro 0

Another good win which wraps up the league stage of the State Championship. Despite winning it by 5pts their are no trophies as the play-offs await.

--

Sao Paulo State Championship QF
Santos 1 (Gustavo Henrique 45)
Rio Clara 0

Apparently this win means we qualify for the Copa do Brasil for next season. I just took it for granted that you are in it anyway! lol

SUMMARY

A fine month as we ended the league stage of the State Championship top of the pile and qualified for the semis where we will play Serie B side Oeste.

There are so many things I need to learn and get used to. How do I qualify for the Copa Libertadores? I thought the Copa do Brasil was a 2 legged affair, we won the first leg and are in the next round but several others played 2 legs, agents offering me money for a percentage of my players, I could go on................

I did sign someone though. I felt that I needed a RW and with Europeans not fancying a move to South America I targeted Agustin Allione from Velez Sarsfield and I got the 18y/o Argentinian for 5.5m. He has started off briliantly so far.

wow thats an incredible number of games to play every year. after following your bilbao stories and seeing how you like to win every competition in the same year its going to be interesting to see whether you can do that here. you are going to need a lot of depth in your squad in order to rotate the starting 11 in the different competitions. im sure its different for each team in the league but what is the financial structure like. will you be able to keep your bigger players at the club or will you be forced to offload them to european clubs in order to keep the club running

I currently am 330k in the red (have a loan of 40m) but mainly due to signing Allione. I have had 7m bids for Arouca but thats it so far and the board didnt accept it over my head thankfully. You get less than 3m for winning Serie A so we wont get rich in prize money but the tv deals and sponsorship is not too bad

Nice going so far mate. I think by winning the league is how you qualify for Copa Libertadores! I'm looking into starting in the Brazilian Third division, but not sure!! Think you are putting me off! Haha. :P

MAY

Sao Paulo State Championship SF
Santos 4 (Leandro Damiao 9pen, 13pen, 67, Bruno Peres 22)
Oeste 2 (Sassa 41, Jheimy 60)

Into the final we go.

--

Copa do Brasil 2nd Round

America (MG) 0
Santos 4 (Geuvanio 13, Otavio 24, 39, Paulo Ricardo 70)

A good win from my backups here. We had 3 players taken off injured though and ended the match with 9 men!!!

I have just found out that the away team goes through automatically if they win by 2 goals or more! I have so much to learn!!!!

--

Sao Paulo State Championship Final 1st Leg
Sao Paulo 3 (Alexandre Pato 42, Edson Silva 79pen, Wellington 84)
Santos 2 (Allione 11, Bruno Peres 54)

Pato, Ganso, Luis Fabiano, Alvaro Pereira and Cambiasso are just some of the players that Sao Paulo can call upon (and they signed Kaka today in real life) so they are a really strong side but we had this game in our own hands but when Edu Dracena got sent-off we collapsed.

--

Sao Paulo State Championship Final 2nd Leg

Santos 1 (Leandro Damiao 20)
Sao Paulo 0
(Agg 3-3, Santos win 5-4 on penalties)

WE WIN THE STATE CHAMPIONSHIP!!!!!

At full time I was delighted as I thought we had won an away goals but once again the rules and regulations in this mad country brought me a surprise as we went straight to a penalty shoot-out. We dont have great penalty takers but we converted 5 out of 5 which usually is enough!

--

Serie A
Atletico Paranaense 2 (Ricardinho 81, 87)
Santos 3 (Gabriel Barbosa 17, 66pen, Allione 33)

This match kicked off our bread and butter league campaign and after strolling through most of the game we lost concentration and almost threw the 3pts away.

--

Santos 4 (Gustavo Henrique 1, Allione 42, 58, Gabriel Barbosa 45pen)
Coritiba 0

My top 3 young players got the goals here as we dominated this match.

SUMMARY

This was an important, and successful month. We won the Sao Paulo state Championship by beating Sao Paulo on penalties. They really have a good side and should be, along with Corinthians, the sides to beat in our state and I would think they will be there or there abouts in the Serie A campaign.

We finally kicked off the Serie A campaign with 2 wins and I hope to gain qualification for the Copa Libertadores by the end of the season. We are predicted to finish 10th so some work will need to be done.

I figured out why we didnt have to play the 2nd legs of my cup matches as if the away team wins by 2 goals or more they go straight through to the next round!!! I will learn the quirks of this nations rules eventually!!!!

That's an amazing story. I'mBrazilian and if you need some help to understanding anything, don't exitate to ask.
I see you are in doubt about how to qualify to copa libertadores.well, it is simple: won the Serie A or finish at least at fourth. Another way is winning the brazilian cup. That are the 5 spot se have in copa libertadores.
But we have a cha!pionship similar to Europa League, callled Copa SulamericanaSulamericana and the qualifying is almost the same: finish serie a betweeen 5 and 8 place.

Thanks. I kinda figured out that but when I looked at the Serie A rules it says that teams can be excluded if they reach the 4th round of the Copa do Brasil? Surely that doesnt mean that if we win the league and get to the cup 4th round we will not compete continentally????

I need that explained!!!

Every time you post an update I think, yeah, I'm going to do a lower league Brazilian save, but then you post a question about being unsure of something and I then think, hmm if KlippyBo doesn't understand then maybe I won't do it!! Haha. How you finding the save, aside from the crazy rules? Cheers. :)
