erm, it just comes with alot of practice and boredom i guess.
been making them for about a year now, done or two better than these that you might find towards the start of the thread, but i'm not sure.
thanks though mate, much appreciated.
 
Background is a bit easy/boring, Stu.. Needs more work on it, the render doesn't blend into the background at all, the lighting isn't very good and the text doesn't really fit in.

It's not your best, you can do better as you've done better.. Watch a few tutorials on blending and stuff, and I'm sure you'll pick up.
 
I did desaturate it so it would blend better, really just messing around with textures etc, see what happens.
 
OK everyone, I have tried and tried, but I can't do those swirls/special effects..
How DO you do them? Is there any type of tutorial?
 
To do the spirals etc, it is just a texture with that pattern, and then change the layer type and opacity

StuW - It's much better then your other one, but it's still pretty poor.. The background again doesn't really work, the badge behind the player is a good idea and does make it look better just isn't executed very well in this work.. The red textures around the player looks out of place, doesn't really fit in very well.
The text is okay obviously could be better.

I think if you tried to make them more simple, and work on that first then start adding other things you'll find you'll find new things out.
