They say hes younger than he is. Its the same with Yakubu, apparantly it was a fake passport to help him come over to England... to be fair the guy was massive and he was only supposed to be about 20. Its to make him look stronger and quicker playing agaisn lads a lot younger than him

he was on the game cover of Fifa 07 or 06 in the States, had a huge following (I was a big fan) sad to see that he is at such an average club, SI will definately drop is CA and PA for Fm11, he was still a great buy in Fm10 as well as Fm09, pity, would love to see him do really well at his current club and get picked up by a good team for future...

Freddy Adu is more concerned about twitter than football.

It was man utd ;)

What are these rumours about his age Jake?

There are some rumours that he's five years older than is said to be. Hence, when he played youth football against other 12 year olds, he was actually about 17, and looked far better than them. Conspiracy theoriests use evidence like bone marrow age testing (or something) that apparently revealed his age, but it's all bollocks.

EDIT: Ouch. Only worth 350k in FM...

People say that form is temporary and class is perminent, but it seems to me like he has just had the nation and also the world on hos shoulders at 14, the money he was earning at that stage could of had a bad effect on the way he performed, knowing that if one bad mistake was to be made, his deal with Nike would be in trouble. I don't think his career is over but it needs turning around

All the hype surrounding him was because he lied about his age. When he was mesmerising everybody at age 14 he was actually 16. As he's developed this has come back to bite him on the ****.

Mate, this is bollocks. Seriously, it is.

Too much pressure, that's all it was, pretty simple.

Oh and the American coaches probably sucked balls.

'

Mate as Jake has mentioned in previous threads, clubs such as Benefica and Monaco wont offer him contracts or take him on loan without first determining his age, so all that **** about his age is bollocks, he was really amazing but he just lost it due to some shocking development

There wasnt really any rise of Freddy Adu..... Im sure Chelsea had him on trial (or Man Utd) and they said he was just an average player. Obviously hyped up by the Yanks to get him into European football.

I meant Rise is by the way he shot to fame, what other Rise can there be?

The simple answer to this is..... not every fruit turns out to be a tree, some spoil, some get eaten and some are brought up as a fruit that will one day join a big european club and play very well and the expectation spoilt his morale and his talents are wasted.

gosh I was hoping to get more opinions on this article so I commented, i know it has last been commented on 3 weeks ago but i hope ots ok

Freddy Adu, Ryan Babel...maybe Twitter is to blame! Then again it hasn't stopped Lucas making a huge improvement this season.

True, although he certainly has over a million followers on Twitter so i dont blame him going on there talking ****

In my opinion it went wrong because he stayed in the USA early on. He rejected a seven figure move to Italy, where they would of given him a proper football education and honed his skills and made the most out of him, sadly mummy didnt want to leave usa and he never progressed.
I remember back in cm03/04 he ws the first player we all signed when we started a new game, (fabio paim being the second, and diego maradona being the third).
I still live in hope that someone will put him in the FM face pack at some point though! Having no picture puts me off signing Adu :@

That fact he is american and it was around the time of the 2002 world cup put to much spotlight on football and him in the US. The labelling that the american media were giving him " the new pele" was too much pressure. I dont know what to think about the age issue i havent rele looked into it, what i would say though is that check his height at 12 and now 9 years later... really he should have grown in height if not in bulk. Even if his age is a lie or not (im not saying it is) they was he was talked about when playing for DC being what seemed a god like creature should of seen him make an impact at one of the European clubs rather then flopping at each level as he goes down.

He even could of just peeked at an early age making him seem set for greatest but never destined for it.
Coach have seemed to have the view that his doesn't posses near enough tactical knowledge to succeed. Adu joined DC over other clubs as in an article in 2003 said

" Sources told SI that Adu spurned more lucrative offers from Europe to play in MLS. Why? Three reasons. Adu can 1) live at home with his family in Potomac, Md.; 2) play first-team professional soccer as a minor in the U.S., a practice forbidden in Europe to non-EU citizens by FIFA, soccer's governing body; and 3) have a more nurturing environment in MLS than he would in the hothouse of European soccer."

In my opinion a move to Europe at 12 building through the ranks , less pressure, better coaches and what would of been help him gain more knowledge of the culture of world football may have seen Adu in a different like nowadays

Critiscise me all you want although my opinion won't be changed that he is a few years older than he supposedly is.

He skipped two years of school as he was supposedly academically ahead of most other kids, it is very rare children in the USA or any other country for that matter skip grades. It does happen but they're normally very clever children.

When he was 12/13/14 and he was playing against kids his age, he was bigger than the majority of them although he also was quicker and more agile than them too. When I was that age, the bigger kids were normally the slower ones.

Controversy has been surrounded around many an African player over the past few years as it is believed many lie about their age (Adu migrated to the USA from Ghana). Look at Nwankwo Kanu, you cannot tell me he is 33 years of age, I haven't seen him run for about 5 years. I still have my doubts about Romelu Lukaku...

Yes your right, I seem to remember African players being required to undergo bone marrow testing to determine their age, because they always won Junior world cups, and teams complaining their players appeared much older than the age group limits. I seem to remember this happening to Nigeria which caused uproar.

Totallty agree and this mirrors my comments about him earlier in this thead mate. Top American soccer jourelist Shaun Wheelock also believes this and he is massivly respected throughout the BBC.

Ill tell you whos to blame , Benfica! They sent him to my local team Belenenses on a loan when they knew we didnt needed him, he played 3 times, overall maybe 30 mins and he had no place in Benfica 1st eleven.
