This lad here looks like an absolute ******* monster. He's unhappy and I'm his favoured personnel (gave him his first cap). Problem is I have a 198 PA regen striker, Fierro, Cavani and Suarez already with a one striker system. ****. :(

Sell Suarez or Cavani since they're on or slightly past their peak age and will only go down in Value. Keep one to tutor. Voila, new youngster and profit :P

Has that changed? I've always thought that they took progress rate at the club as a factor of potential? I must've been misinformed. Apologies.

I dont think it's ever been different...

To talk mechanics: whenever a regen is created, he gets a set value for "potential ability"; a score out of 200. In his attempt to reach this potential ability, a player encounters several breakpoints. The first is (afaik) exactly when he turns 24. When he turns 24, the rate of growth severely slows down - but it doesn't stop; he can still significantly improve over the years if he gets enough playtime etc. But it really is a huge breakpoint; after 24 it will take several years to get the same growth a player can get in 1 year before 24yrs of age. This rate of growth slows down over time. While a first team player who gets to play every game between 24 and 27 years of age can grow maybe 10 or 15 points towards his potential ability, he will maybe gain 5 points for playing every game between 27 and 30, and somewhere around 30 the growth simply stops. Somewhere between 30 and 34 comes another breakpoint where a player starts to lose ability points no matter what you do. WHEN this point comes (30, 31, 32,..) is primarely affected by professionalism.

The reason all of this is relevant is because i can't say "on a report card, the only thing "potential ability" reflects is that "potential ability out of 200" hidden number", because the staffmember will also take into account what i explained above; the realistic growth potential. Say there's two players with IDENTICAL current & potential ability. Both have 110 current ability out of 180 potential ability. But one player is 18, while the other is 25. When you get staffmember report cards on these two players, they will have a similar/identical star-value for current ability, but the 18yr old will have much higher star-rating for potential ability, despite having the same number, just because he is 7 years younger and has 6 years of pre-24 growth in front of him.

Another thing to always remember is that star-rating / current/potential ability on a report card is relative to your own squad, more precisely to the best player you currently have for the same position. If you currently have a striker with 190 current/potential ability, and you scout a striker with 175 potential ability, this player will get a much lower star-rating for potential than if your best striker has 160 ability. If you scout a player that has his best position somewhere you simply dont play & have no players for (say you play in 4-4-2, have no top players who can play as AMC because you dont use them), the game doesn't have anything to compare with and that player will always have a high star-rating.

Interesting, I didn't know the exact breakpoint of when growth slows, since you've confirmed it's 24, I shall use that to my benefit. I always assumed it was 22ish it slowed down. I knew most of the rest, just I had also assumed that potential growth at their current club was reported on too.

What is it about his stats that make you say they seem off?

His work rate and determination dont seem to lend themselves to a player that will turn World Class

i guess he does have pretty good DEF attributes -but his stand out thing is Pens (???)
he also seems to be a bit of a lethargic players :)

i dont know - maybe its too early to judge him - but i half expected him to have a couple of +18s attributes at 18yo

where as my current top striker already had finishing, pace, acceleration, heading and determination at 19 when he was 17 - and he was a wonderkid as well.

Renato seems a wee bit 'ok' for a wonderkid :)

If you want to see his current/potential ability download FM Genie Scout , its free. You can also use it for scouting players, but i think you get better results by using your scouts

Determination is already at 16, which is sufficient, but if you have the right player for it you can increase it further through tutoring.
Work rate at 13 is not entirely horrible, and it's a stat that improves pretty well through development. Workrate falls under the "strenght" training category, make sure to give him enough of that. It should get to at least 17 by the time he's developped, which is very good.

(edit: i just realised, maybe you meant he needs determination & workrate to develop well in training, but neither of these stats affect a player's development / training level. They are purely for in-game on-pitch performances.)

You're obviously not playing him because he has 20 in penalties, but having 20 in penalties doesn't hurt either.

The difference between a striker and a midfielder, in my opinion, is that a striker has a handfull of stats that "need" to be 18+ and can be horrible at the rest, while a midfielder has about 20 or 30 stats that need to be 15+. The biggest thing about a striker is that he has good strongpoints, the biggest thing about a midfielder is that he has no weaknesses. I hope that makes sence. IF he has enough potential, sign him, sign him now! And start playing him, he already has the stats to merrit a firstteam place. 5 years from now this will be your nr.1 key player, and if you can get his determination a big higher (or even if not), a potential captain.

Yeah I don't rate him that much either I was thinking of retraining him to a winger.

Latest update on Gareth Stevens - the best player I've had come through my 2 different academies so far on this save. Still a long way to go but his physical stats have rocketed up and hopefully he continues the development - definitely potential for a top striker in there.

little of topic Cristian Erickson has seems to have contracted some sort of viral infection that is going to keep him out for 6 months. has this happened to anyone else ?

Nice physical stats on such a young guy, are u gna upload more pictures of him progressing? I'm interested to find out ow he gets on.

Update 2054/2055:

Sold 7 players for a combined 226million. Cargol & Gonzalez had to go because they were tired of playing second violin; Milinovic & Garcia had to go because they... well they were **** players tbh; nice stats but few goals/assists. Palmer, nearing the 200 goal cap for england, wanted a new challenge so i let him finish his carreer at Hull (who finished 3rd in english competition last season), and Maleta & Bobrov's current ability is much too low for their age; they failed to secure a 1st team slot by the time they really should have so they gots the boot.

On the prospects front, van de Stelt has had an incredibly smooth development. He's still not at his potential, but already he's an amazing player. Leandro's development has picked up after last season's torn hamstring; he's further behind in his development despite being older, but he's getting to play 90% of the games so i have faith he will reach his potential aswell. Also introducing Mustafi, a probable future 1st team CB (or perhaps i'll remake him into a DMC because of limited physical):
