A footballers career is usually full of phone calls. A telephone call between me and a football agents based in Birmingham set off my career with me signing for Coventry City and making my debut at just 15, 2 years later and 55 apperances and 20 goals later it was another phone call that sealed my move to my boyhood club Birmingham City. By the time I was 19 years old I had played for England 8 times "Clarke, 24" was a name proudly displayed on the back of many Birmingham City fans shirts. A few years later when I was 23 there was another conversation between me and my agent; S.C. Braga an ambitios club in Portugal had made a formal approach for my services and my cash-strapped club had accepted a bid of around £2m.

When my knee and ankle injuries I suffered with in my youth returned I started to fall out of love with the beautiful game and left Braga and it took another phone call, this time between me and my mother, to get me to stay in the game. It worked, playing for Coventry once again, overcoming the injuries, falling back in love with the game, becoming a player worthy of the fans apprection once again.. all this gave me the strength to attempt to crack football abroad once more.

It was a telephone call, between me and my agent, to inform me that my father had died of a heart attack when I was just 28 and now plying my trade for A.C Milan in Italy that saw me become an expensive flop transfer. In the next transfer window my agent called; saying A.C Milan have accepted a £17m bid from FC Barcelona as they attempted to resurrect my career, they were a club that I fell in love with, but didn’t fit my style of play. When I left after two seasons,to finish my career in Brazil, people accused me of coasting- they saw images of me shopping and loving life in Brazil, talking to the youth players constantly; they thought I was already thinking about coaching. I didn’t think I was, I never thought I was a manager in the making, but when I was playing my final seasons in Brazil, as veteran holding midfielder playing for Flamego, I realised that I was more interested in giving young players opportunities.

Soon I was head of youth development at Flamego, then I became a roaming football consultant; I was really interested in day-to-day management of senior squads but didn't get given a chance, so it was all about the youth team. Eventually I was the head of youth development at Birmingham City, although I spent time as a consultant for both Bayern Munich and proved more useful to FC Barcelona when I was providing them with English youngsters to test out.

A few months after i left Barcelona to come back to England I recieved another phone call, probably the most intresting yet, it was from the chairman of my first club Coventry City also known as The Sky Blues.

“Mr Clarke, we would be extremely interested in your services in a very flexible capacity.”

“What do you mean?”

" We want to put Coventry back on the map. We would be very interested in your services not only as a direct football consultant for the football club in terms of our youth development, but as the manager of the senior squad.”

“I don’t manage senior teams; I’m 54 years old, I have never been given a managerial position before…”

“We have followed your career, and we know that you are what we need, the missing piece of our puzzle. You can lead us back to the championship, I'm sure of it."

“Well, I can’t say I’m not flattered…”

“We are also willing to offer you a contract of £1,500,000 a year, with personal bonuses dependingon how well we do in domestic competitions.”

“That is an exceptionally generous offer; will you give me time to consider?”

“I’m afraid time is of the essence, we will need a response within 48 hours.”

“Then I don’t need 48 hours. I’m your man.”

That was it, I'm back where it all began, The Richoh Arena...

nice ! I'll be following, Are you using the new summer update or are Coventry still in the championship ?

A short taxi trip, a few conferences and the signing of some legal paperwork after arriving back in Coventry, I was sitting in my temporary office pondering my first moves.

Usually the willing players are the local young players; respectful and hardworking players that would run around and give you everything every training session, with a passion for the sport and excited about the club’s future, and normally it is, rather unsurprisingly, the foreigners that are lazy and feeling sorry for themselves, strutting around with arrogance, taking there place in the team for granted and not understanding what winning means to the fans.

But thankfully Coventry were diiferent, there was a sense of togetherness unlike at the other clubs I've worked at. Everyone gave 110% effort and everyone helped eachother out. I could instantly tell that The Sky Blues are the right club for me.

After watching the players train for the first time I was pleased with what I saw but I knew that a number of signing will have to be made, largley due to the squad being so small. I also noticed 5 players that didnt look as if they wanted to be here and quite frankly they didnt look good enough so I have let 5 players leave; Roy O'Donovan and Chris Hussey who both joined Crewe and Danny Ireland, Freddy Eastwood and Cody McDonald who all were released and have yet to find new clubs, I wish them all the best.

I also made my first signing after this training session and I am very pleased to welcome 31 year old striker Darius Vassel to club who joined on a free transfer following his release from Championship side Leicester. Darius will play a big part in our attempt for promotion and will spearhead our attack in the upcoming season. I also hope that he uses his wealth of experince to help the clubs youngsters achieve there potential, after all he does have 22 Senior England caps and 6 goals in addition to his 11 England Under 21 caps and 2 goals.

Wow, I can't believe it.. pre-season already finished! Most of my pre-season was spent in an office with my assistant manager attempting to sign players, we targetted young players and managed to strengthen Coventry's squad by completing the signings of 18 players including Darius Vassell.

As I have already said Vassell was our first signing and not long after he joined, on the same day, former Leeds left back Ben Parker was welcolmed to The Ricoh Arena, the 23 year old signed a contract up until 2015 earning £2.2k per week.

The following day promising midfielder Jacob Mellis joined us on a free from Chelsea after being released, he was soon followed by experienced holding midfielder Alan Navarro who play a key part in the clubs push for promotion after being released from Brighton.

I then completed probably my biggest coup by beating a host of prem teams to the signing of right back Nathan Clyne who also joined on a free. I followed this signing by finalizing deals for center back Luke Chambers, versatile defender Christian Riberio and 30 year old center midfielder Michael Stewart who all joined on free transfers after being released from Nottingham Forrest, Bristol and Charlton respectivley.

I then felt I had got the best out of contract players possible so I looked who was avalible on loan and I manager to sign Zeki Fryers from Manchester Untied, Benik Afobe from Arsenal, Sammy Ameobi from Newcastle and Ryan McGivren from Manchester City all on year long loan deals.

After this I decided to splash the £1.2m I had to my disposal and signed promising left winger Alex Henshall, who I firmly believe will play for England one day, from Manchester City for just £325k and spent my remaining £800k on talented midifelder Oliver Norwood who already boasts 4 senior international caps at the age of just 20.

At the end of the window I signed a host of promising youth player from the Premier league; Daniel Boateng, Abdi Ibrahim, Marko Mitrovic, Michael Ngoo and Bradden Inman.

I am looking foward to the upcoming season now more than ever followin the arrival of these players.

Our pre-season results looked very promising with only one loss, which was against Arsenal, the results were as follows:

Coventry 5-4 Peterborough
Darius Vassell(3), Jacob Mellis, Gary McSheffrey

Coventry 1-2 Arsenal
Darius Vassell

Nuneaton 0-3 Coventry
Darius Vassell, Gary McSheffrey, Luke Chambers

Plymouth 0-1 Coventry
Gary McSheffrey
