Hodgson Steps Down!

View attachment 351963
Roy Hodgson has today announced he will step down from his role as England manager after minor health difficulties. The 65-year old Englishman has been manager of the England national side for a year now - having been appointed in May of 2012.

The head of the English Football Association, David Bernstein, sat alongside the former West Bromwich Albion manager this morning at a press conference held at Wembley in which he explained he had been having 'minor health difficulties' since around February. Doctors initially expressed concern amid chest pains for Hodgson - and then advised him to step down. After two and a half months of talks with David Bernstein, he decided it was best for himself and the national team if he were to step down.

The 65-year old has vast managerial experience - having managed 21 teams over a 37-year period. His managerial career started in 1976 when he took over at Swedish club Halmstads BK. He remained in Sweden for four years - winning two league titles while in charge. England was the fourth national team Hodgson had managed - while his club employers include the likes of Inter Milan, Liverpool, Udinese and Fulham.

Hodgson initially took charge as England manager in May of 2012 after months of speculation following Fabio Capello's resignation at the beginning of the year. Current Queens Park Rangers manager Harry Redknapp was immediately installed as the bookies' favourite for the job despite still being employed at Tottenham Hotspur before Bernstein stopped all speculation with the appointment of Hodgson. Despite only taking charge a short time before the 2012 UEFA European Championships started, Hodgson led the team to several fine performances before being knocked out at the quarter-final stage to eventual runners-up Italy on penalties.

Due to the awkward timing of the announcement, England coach Gary Neville has been put in charge for the next two games. On the 7th of June, England host Montenegro at Wembley in a World Cup qualifier before Paraguay travel to Wembley on the 11th for a friendly. Neville will remain in charge for both fixtures and a statement will be released from the English FA at a later date.

Thanks a lot mate - needed some time off. I never really got into the Stoke game; things got on top of me and I just wanted to start afresh. Thanks for the comment! :)

View attachment 351983

Temporary England manager Gary Neville has announced his squad for the upcoming games against Montenegro and Paraguay. The 38-year old was placed in temporary charge of the team following Roy Hodgson's resignation earlier this month.

The former Manchester United right-back had limited resources to choose his squad with - as several key players, such as Steven Gerrard, were injured and many youngsters who Neville was rumoured to be interested in selecting had already been taken to the under-21 UEFA European Championships. Due to the current instability surrounding the squad, goalkeeper Joe Hart was selected as temporary captain for the two games.

Neville's Squad:

Goalkeepers: Joe Hart, Fraser Forster and John Ruddy.

Defenders: Leighton Baines, Ashley Cole, Glen Johnson, Kyle Walker, Chris Smalling, Phil Jagielka, Ryan Shawcross and Gary Cahill.

Midfielders: Michael Carrick, Tom Cleverley, Tom Huddlestone, Frank Lampard, Aaron Lennon, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Scott Sinclair.

Forwards: Jermain Defoe, Wayne Rooney, Daniel Sturridge, Theo Walcott and Danny Welbeck.
