The unhappy player syndrome

So I'm managing Southampton, and my second best central defender Jose Fonte is ****** because I transfer listed him one season ago when I felt that the money from his transfer could be useful.

It's been almost a year in the game since that, and the guy still does not want to have a private chat saying the relationship has broken down. He has a year left on his contract after the end of the current season, and I would really like to keep him.

Is there a way I can get such an unhappy player to sign an extension?

offer him an improvement on his current deal

I would love to - only he refuses to come to the table at all.

try praising him in the press, saying gyou admire him etc. play him alot and wait until his motivation gets too okay/good and then try and offer him a new contract.
