Why isent nottingham forest in the poll 1979 with brian clough got to be one the best sides ever beside the busby babes

I have only seen 4 of the sides, unfortunately, so I voted really out of those.

And I went for the United team of 99. It wasn't just a first 11, or a single player, every single player in that whole squad played a part. We might have caught some luck, a la Champions League Final, but some of our performances that season really show the characters you need to become the very best.

Barcelona, great team. Arsenal, great team. Real Madrid, great team. United? great squad.

Oh my days.

Man United team of 99:
Solksjaer, Cole, Yorke and Sheringham?
Those 4 players are the best forward line EVER out of the teams mentioned?...Wowza.

I get the fact of some of that 99 team are top class but team wise they certainly aren't the best team ever, a great squad but no...just no.

No comparison to teams in the 70s/80s who won trebles more than once as a team (They won the treble and then United went on a drought for years). Good teams win trebles/doubles but great teams win consistently over a period of time, only reason I'm piping up is how can that team be regarded as the best ever?

I'm no Liverpool fan but I can easily say during the 70s/80s when United were in the gutter they literally dominated everything in sight so surely they go ahead of MUFC 99 team who won the treble?

Lets not forget how that team won the Champs League final as well, wasn't it through 2 corners?
If that does get voted the greatest team ever I'm going to lose my faith in football fans to be honest.
Teams above them in my view:
Benfica of the 70s/80s
Madrid of the 50s
Barcelona current/Dream team era
Liverpool of the 70s/80s
Invincible's team of 04

Another small point, great teams dominate Europe/Domestically and that season I don;t think they were sensational but they were better than other teams were domestically and European wise they scraped through to winning the trophy...Not a great team.

United and Arsenal fans being too much biased as always. Voted for Barca 2010/11 cuz they are the best team I've ever watch.

Arsenal's Invincibles didn't win anything in Europe, still you rated them as great team.

^Very true but I have to admit the reason I stuck them in is because besides the current Barce they are one of the few teams I can claim to have watched for 40+ games a season and they were an impressive side with a nice brand of football.

Not the greatest but they're borderline along with Ajax side of the 90's, I was hoping we would get some Blackburn fan come in here and say the Kenny team in the 90s that won the Prem was the best ever...oO)

Even as someone with strong Barca sympathies, I have to say the Madrid 50's-60 side. It's easy to dismiss a lot of achievements with 'it was easy to win back then' but no one else did 5 on the trot, they did have a a few of the genuine greats (De Stefano and Puskas, but also the likes of Gento and Kopa), whatever you think of theories that they had favouritism at home (I keep a rather open mind on that, it wouldn't surprise me but I'm not accusing them of anything), they didn't have it for Europe, and it was crowned off with that hammering of Frankfurt, who may have looked like a very poor side by that result but otherise could be considered pretty good judging by their run to the final in the first place. If the Ajax 70's side was up there they're be a close second. More worthy than a couple listed.

Voted for Barcelona because they're the only one out of these that I watched really extensively (didn't get in to football until later in life) but I think any of those teams deserve the vote (except for the Celtic and Liverpool sides, don't know anything about that Celtic side other than that it won the European Cup, and the Liverpool teams of that era that were supposedly some of the best ever sides were soundly beaten in the Intercontinental Cup, in 81 by Flamengo and 84 by Independiente).

The Lisbon Lions.

Not only beat one of the most successful negative sides ever who where coming off 2 European Championships in 3 years, but destroyed them. Inter forced only 2 saves off of Ronnie Simpson and there goal was from the spot. Whilst we had 39 attempts on goal. PLaying with the philosophy of "The best place to defend is in the opposition penalty box."
Maybe not the technically the best footballers ever but they had the mentality to beat anyone. Came out of the tunnel singing as loud as the Inter fans.

They also are one of only 2 clubs to win the quadruple. They went on to win 9 league titles in a row and reach another European cup final.

To deny the fact that United wern't a brillaint team that year is narrow minded.

No, they didn't play the "perfect" style of football, and we scraped winning the Champions League, but that was an acculmitnation of the amount of pride and courage the team has, the beleif that the game is never over.

Technically, all the teams above were better than that United team. Psycologically, no team on that list was as determined to win even when everything was against them. Nowhere near.

The great teams up there have outstanding players and are all magnificent examples of amazing football teams, but great teams aren't always about talent. They are about a great work ethic, a desire to win and to keep going and going and going.

The reason people have chosen the '99 United side is because it embodied the spirit that people love, that you aren't born the best, you become the best.

Real madrid 2001/2002 were 4th in "la liga" !
I can't see any reason for them being there

Juventus (platitni era - marcello leppi era) should've been there .

For me I would say milan that sacchi created !

Great thread mate :)

you missed out Bayern Munich's 1970s period where they won 3 champions league cup in a row with legendary players such as franz beckenbauer, gerd muller, sepp maier etc.

The British bias here is way too heavy to conduct a fair poll. The Invincibles were impressive, and were the best team in EPL by far during the time, but were they the best team in the world at that moment? No.

I voted for Sacchi's Milan, simply because at that time they were unplayable. They crushed one of the greatest Madrid side in a long time, consisting Bernd Schuster, Martin Vazquez, Michel, Hugo Sanchez and Emilio Butragueno with a scoreline 5-0. That, in my opinion, is one amazing feat.

Juventus of mid 90s is not in the poll. They were absolutely superb team..

Can i ask, where is the Man utd Busby Babes team, they were amazing, would of dominated europe. They were amazing, real madrid 1956-60 would of never been as good as busby team, and im not being byist. :D

To be quite frank none of these teams are anywhere near the Madrid boys, Di Stefano, Puskaz the list goes on, they played sublime football and in essance gave rise to total football.... which i must admit was perfected by that Ajax team ( so second place to them)

But another massive shock where is Benfica? what a legend generation they had too

Lisbon Lions.. A great year for British football, having won the World Cup and the first British team to conquer Europe.. In style!

I dont know how much you have watched Madrid boys from 56-60 to make such a definitive post. Milan of late 80s and Juve of Mid 90s were class too..

Raul Morientes Zidane Figo Carlos Guti Makelele Hierro Helguera Casillas Salgado..........

Well you are correct in saying I may not have seen to much of them live but being a football fanatic and local youth coach I tend to be pointed to tapes of what other professionals consider the best displays of football.... Of all the tapes I've watched I was most impressed by Real 56- 60 Benfica under Eusebio The great Ajax team and Milan under Sacchi was also extreamly impressive

So to hear comments about the arsenal team although they where a good team would not even come close to any of the true great teams.... in other words I kinda feel offended that they get so many votes and praise
