Liverpool striker Fernando Torres will miss the rest of the season following knee surgery.

The 26-year-old, who saw a specialist in Spain on Sunday, has been troubled by the problem for a number of weeks.

A Liverpool spokesman said: "It was decided that he would need surgery on a torn cartilage in his right knee.

"This will be carried out later on Sunday and, as a guide, the usual rehabilitation period for this type of procedure is around six weeks."

His fitness will be closely monitored by Spain manager Vicente del Bosque with Spain's opening World Cup game against Switzerland on 16 June.

Del Bosque must submit his final 23-man squads to Fifa by 1 June.

Torres, who joined Liverpool from Atletico Madrid in 2007, will also miss out on a meeting against his former club in the Europa League semi-finals.

The Spaniard has scored 22 goals in all competitions this season, despite being beset by various injuries.

He was sidelined for a month after a knee operation in January and before Christmas struggled with a groin injury.

May aswell get it done now in time for next season as they wont finish 4th now.

liverpool must be gutted, but as a villa fan hoping to finish above you im secretly pleased!!!

True.. But this will also make it harder for us to win the Europa League, I'm not sure N'Gog will perform if he is picked. :S

As a Man U fan i'm actually really disappointed. Was hoping he would be fit to face Chelsea

good news as i wont chelski to beat man u to the title and stop them getting thier 19th

With complete disregard to Liverpool, I actually feel sorry for Nando Torres, how frustrating it must be to have such injuries.. I sorely hope he can stay fit next season.

Not good news to Anfield... Like Coach Carter said, EL will be though without him, and the games for the EPL won't be easy either. However I would prefer him to had this injury earlier before facing Benfica...

He didn't look fit in his last few games, our on fault for rushing him. Torres has horrible injuries, which IMO is one of the reasons we came 2nd last year, and certainly why we're doing so poorly this.
Imagining N'gog in European Semi final, dear god hope Kuyt is played.Sorry for him though, missing out against Atletico.Again. Also, Spain will be good odds to win the Wc, shame

At least it's getting done before next season, I mean we have nothing to play for this year. Apart from the Europa League, which is a **** trophy anyway.. Hopefully he stays fit all season next year.

i am a little more confident going to anfield now torres is the only player that does anythink against us.

Liverpool might struggle against Athletico now, Gerrard's been off form this season and I'll be surprised if they get to the final, still be supporting them for an all English final though :D

Not really, Kuyt always scores in the big matches, and against you lot. Also, Aurelio,Lucas scored against you last year on your turf

But you are forgetting Atletico have been poor all season as well, very similar to Liverpools except Atletico made it to final of Spanish cup. And Aguero is banned for the away leg of the tie.

Well, atleast we can we go the the semi-finals of the Europa League...

Seriously though, I think N'Gog will be a quality player in the future, but right now we need a striker. We can't have a hot prospect as our main striker after Nando. I say stick Kuyt or Babel upfront.

It's a bit off topic, but seriously. It ****** me off some people say the Europa League is a ****** little trophy. Is it ****! Obviously it's not as good as the champions league but it's still a brilliant little trophy to win, better than the carling cup (Manchester United) and nothing (Arsenal) if we win it. Seriously; look at some of the teams that are in/have been it and tell me that it's not a good little trophy to win. Juventus were in it, Wolfsburg were in it (german champions don't forget) Valencia were in it, and lets not forget Liverpool are in it. This trophies still rated quite highly on the continent whereas we just slag it off. personally it'd kill me to see us play no european football at all next year, but if we didn't, would rafa finally concentrate on the Premier League. As he always seems to favour european competition. Rant Over.

Right, back on topic, this is a massive blow for us, unless he plays Kuyt or Babel upfront we're really going to struggle, especially with N'gog up there. Let's just hope that surgery goes well, and Nando can stay fully fit next season.
