Ajax Face Tough August

ajax_logo.jpg

After confirming qualification into the next qualifying round of the champions league, Ajax looked to start their league off in style but knew they didn't have an easy month planned, they started with Williem ll and then faced FC Twente away, before returning home to face Feyenoord and then Sampdoria over in Italy. Once they finished the first leg they could be back to face Heracles and then round off the month with their second leg at home to Sampdoria. Ajax knew they would have a lot of work to do.

Ajax 3 - 0 Willem ii
Riviere (26, 74) Sulejmani (43)
Riviere made an instant impact following his transfer from AS Saint Etienne just 2 days ago! He made his debut and was selected straight into the squad by Davids who saw an instant return on the £10million spent as he scored in just 26minutes. Ajax were 2 up just before half time as promising 21year old Sulejmani found the net with a left footed drive. Ajax saw the game out 3-0 as Riviere netted his second on his debut with 16minutes to go this time from a header after Donovan's pinpoint cross.

Ajax Pick Up Three Vital Points Away To Rivals
pgs5P.jpg

FC Twente 1 - 4 Ajax
Janko (15) - Riviere (17, 88) Donovan (23) Alderweireld (26)
Ajax needed three points today, they faced FC Twente for the second time this season, and after beating them in the Johan Cruijff Shield, Ajax knew that FC Twente would be out to get revenge especially seeming they were home. Ajax started slowly which ended in them going 1-0 down in just 15minutes but their heads didn't drop as the wonderkid struck again Riviere just 2minutes later to level the scores. Ajax piled on the misery and saw new boy Donovan score after 23minutes and went one better when defender Alderweireld also found the net after just 26minutes! Ajax had turned this game on its head. The game quietened down for the second half and there was only one goal to entertain the crowd and that was when Riviere struck his 5th goal in three games (see champions league result against genk) to end FC Twents hopes!

Ajax 2 - 2 Feyenoord
Donovan (Pen.47) Lucas (67) - Swertz (38) Vukovic (72)
A very evenly contested game which could of swung either way but in the end the teams shared the points. Ajax went behind again as Feyenoord's Swertz took advantage of some sloppy defending just 7minutes before the interval. Donovan capped his second goal in as many games when he scored from the spot just 2minutes after half time. Ajax found themselves in the lead when Debutant Lucas found the net from Donovans cross. However Feyenoord weren't giving up and scoerd with 18minutes to go as the game ended level.

ZASRC.jpg

Sampdoria 0 - 0 Ajax
Ajax would of liked a goal today but they were unable to find the net as both teams seemed to be too curious of each other. Both teams had shots within the double figures but failed to hit the target on other half of them which resulted in the game ending in a 0-0 draw. Ajax will be the happier team with this as now they just need 1 goal in front their home fans.

Heracles 0 - 2 Ajax
Eriksen (40) Riviere (54)

Edgar Davids was pleased with the performance he saw from his lads as he rested a few players with the return leg of the champions league just ahead. They still took the lead though as young Eriksen found his first goal of the season from 22yards when he smashed the ball to the far right corner 5minutes before the break. 9minutes after the break and Ajax doubled their lead when Riviere popped up at the back stick to head home another Donovan cross to seal the game off and keep them in top spot.

Ajax Qualify For Group Stages After Seeing Off Sampdoria
i19QO.jpg

Ajax 2 - 0 Sampdoria
Donovan (Pen.12) El Hamdaoui (80)
Ajax celebrated as they reached the group stages tonight after beating Sampdoria at home 2-0. After drawing 0-0 in the first leg Ajax knew they only needed one goal to see them through. This became realistic for Ajax when they were given a penalty as Eriksen hit the deck and Donovan stepped up confidently to put away his third goal of the season. the game was tight for the next 70minutes with it being classed as a midfielders scrappy game. The ball barely left the centre of the park. But in the 80th minute El Hamdaoui on as a sub wrapped up the win and put Ajax into the group stages.

Ajax look to tough August

With July out of the way and Ajax preparing for the final qualifying round of the Champions League it was time for Clarence Seedorf's side to turn their focus to the league starting with a match against AZ Alkmaar and finishing with a match against Excelsior whilst playing against Celtic in the final qualifying round.

The season started with a bang for Clarence Seedorf's men in a six goal thriller at the DSB Stadium against Alkmaar. Ajax will be happy the performance that they showed and they started in flying fashion with Christian Eriksen opening the scoring in just the 18th minute after Peter Masilela got forward well down the left flank. Despite showing complete control once again AZ managed to grab an equalizer against the run of play when Rasmus Elm scored a neat finish at the far post. The match finished with a flurry of goals with Nicolas Lodeiro, Victor Hugo and Ganso all grabbing their first goals of the season.

The goals continued to come for the Amsterdammers as they romped to a 3 - 0 home victory over FC Groningen with highly rated right back van der Wiel picking up man of the match for showing continuing endeavor down the right flank. Christian Eriksen once again showed his quality scoring a fantastic long ranged effort from the edge of the area that left the keeper looking baffled as to how he was beaten from that distance. The game will also be remembered as new signing Dakson grabbed his first goal for Ajax courtesy of a close range finish from a Peter Masilela cross.

Ajax put in a fantastic display at Celtic Park, which saw them run out 2 - 1 winners scoring 2 vital away goals to take into the second leg. Despite playing with 10 men for 15 minutes thanks to Andre Ooijer picking up a second yellow after going in hard on Joe Ledley. Going in at the break with Celtic well on top, it took an inspiring team talk from Clarence Seedorf to revive the Amsterdammers hopes of qualification to the Group Stages of the Champions League, and it was a goal from Nicolas Lodeiro that got the Dutch side back into the game in the 66th minute. Brazilian starlet Ganso then grabbed what would end up being the winner in the 72nd minute which means that Ajax will be taking 2 vital away goals to the Amsterdam ArenA.

Ajax's disjointed performances continued as they struggled to overcome newly promoted Excelsior at the Woudestein in Rotterdam and it was only 2 second half goals that saw them claim all three points. Despite the Amsterdammers dominating possession it was an own goal that opened the scoring for the away side coming courtesy of a howler from Gudde who slid the ball into his own net soon after the half time break. Brazilian star Ganso secured the 3 points with a fantastic sliding effort in the 80th minute to make it 2 in 3 league games for the 20 year old.

A strong home performance from Ajax saw them qualify for the Champions League group stage courtesy of a brace from Belgian star Romelu Lukaku. The scoring was opened however in the 10th minute Fraser Forster could only push he ball into his own net from a Nicolas Lodeiro shot. Lukaku then scored a fantastic first time volley from a Peter Masilela to round off a wonderful flowing team move from the Amsterdammers. The icing was well and truly put on the cake in the 89th minute with Lukaku securing a brace thanks to being played clean through by Brazilian star Ganso to score a simple finish.

Clarence Reflects on August

seedorf_clarence7.jpg

"It was a tough month, our performances have been disjointed and we look to push on from here. Romelu has been struggling slightly in the lone striker role, so in the coming matches we will be looking to get more men forward from midfield and start playing Ganso in an inside forward role, as he has already shown his quality scoring 6 goals in his first 8 matches for us.

I am delighted to secure qualification to the Champions League Group Stage and I look forward to seeing who that we will face, we are not going to be intimidated by any opposition and have the belief that we can get a result anywhere, whether it be Barcelona or Manchester. Overall this has been a fantastic month for Ajax and I look for this form to continue."

So a tough challenge lies ahead for the Amsterdammers as they look to face the likes of Chelsea and Olympique Marseille in their challenge of gaining qualification to the knockout stage of the Champions League. On seeing the Group Clarence said, "Wonderful, Chelsea, Marseille and Salzburg, easy bring it on!" So there is certainly a belief within the camp that they have hope of progressing in the Champions League.

I see both of you have OM. Good luck in your champions league games-not too much luck with groups there.

I have a feeling the games against OM will be pretty even so finishing second should be realistic for both of you.

Great story so far mates :)

Donovan Puts In Classy Performance
wpid-Ajax-vs-VVV-Venlo.jpg

VVV 0 - 2 Ajax
Donovan (17, 70)
Landon Donovan stole the show as Ajax visited high flying VVV. Both teams were on level points and hadn't lost today so a win was going to be tough to earn. Landon Donovan got started early when he found the net after just 5minutes from a free kick, but it was quickly ruled out for a foul in the box. But he didn't let his head drop as the American ran through two defenders before finding the fair left post and in after just 17minutes and Ajax were buzzing. He went on to score again in the 70th minute this time from a free kick as he bent it up and over the wall into the left corner! Keeper was rooted to the spot.

Ajax weathered the storm after Messi tore them up to net after 28 minutes. Just seven minutes later Ajax were level when a Landon Donovan teasing free kick was headed past Valdes by team mate Dani Alves. Barcelona had 18 shots, 14 on target, 6 clear cut chances and 56% possesion yet Ajax stood strong to see out a vital away point.

Defender Vertonghen opened the scoring from a header after 17 minutes and there wasn't anything else in the first half. Second half and Riviere scored again on the 61st minute as he continued to shine. Edgar Davids Views On September

'Well I'm pleased to say the least! We draw to Barcelona and won against Marseille! We couldn't really ask for better results and it's amazing to be manager of a team that can cope with the likes of Barcelona! We weren't in control but we got a point and thats just football. As for our league form, we sit top and have slipped up twice to silly teams! But we will carry on building and success will come pretty quickly!

Ajax look to tough European ties

992.png

With Ajax getting through August unbeaten and qualifying for the Group Stages of the Champions League, where the Dutch side will be facing the likes of Chelsea and Olympique Marseille. It's time for the side to turn their focus to the tough challenge that lies ahead in September, the first match of the month is against Eredivisie high-flyers Roda JC who are currently lying in 1st place of the table having played a game more than the Amsterdammers. With the transfer window over, and no new faces arriving until January it's going to be down to the players at Ajax to drive the club forward in the coming weeks.

A dominating performance from the Amsterdammers saw them run out 2 - 0 winners against the current Eredivisie Leaders. With Ajax controlling the game and dominating possession and creating the lions share of chances it wasn't until the second half that the deadlock was broken and it was courtesy of new signing Adam Vass who scored a close range effort to celebrate his first goal for Ajax. The away side continued to push on for long periods of the game and could have scored many more and eventually the second goal came, and it was that man against Ganso who has adapted to Dutch football in fantastic fashion, netting his 7th goal of the season.

A performance from the top drawer from Ajax saw them hit the woodwork on 2 occasions and score 4 goals against a Marseille side who had been expecting to come to the Amsterdam ArenA and go away with all 3 points. However, it was Ajax who started in flying fashion with Leandro Augusto firing in a powerful free kick from the edge of the area after just 4 minutes. An 8 minute brace from Nicolas Lodeiro saw the Amsterdammers 3 - 0 up in 17 minutes and looked like they would go on to score 6's and 7's. This was not going to be the case as Marseille steadied the ship and grabbed two goals to put them right back into contention however a late goal from Toby Alderweireld from a Leandro Augusto set piece saw Seedorf's Ajax leave with all 3 points and a massive confidence boost.

In a match that Ajax once again completely controlled it was only 2 second half goals that saw them overcome a resilient Den Haag side. In a match with Ajax as heavy favourites, it wasn't until an extra time own goal that saw the Amsterdammers secure their qualification to the next round of the competition. However, this was not the main talking point of the match, which saw Ajax finish with just 8 players on the pitch, with Andre Ooijer being sent off in the 69th minute for a two footed challenge, then with all substitutes having been made Boilesen was stretchered off after suffering a potentially serious injury, and finally Roly Bonevacia was sent off for a second bookable offence late on, however Ajax managed to hold out for the victory despite naming a second string line up, and finishing the match with 7 outfield players.

Ajax were delighted to come away from Stamford Bridge with a point, although with the way the game panned out they might have wished for more, with Ashley Cole being sent off in the 74th minute it left touching on 20 minutes for Ajax to capitalise however they didn't manage to. The match was a cagey affair with both sides looking to capitalise on mistakes and the first goal of the game came courtesy of a Nicolas Anelka header from a Yuri Zhirkov cross in the 34th minute. However, when Nicolas Lodeiro was pulled back in the area by Jose Bosingwa, Romelu Lukaku stepped up to grab a point for Ajax leaving the away fans delighted to the start of their Champions League Group matches.

Clarence looks back at September results

2010_11_23-2010_11_23_23_50_1-jpg-43372.jpg

"Despite struggling in some of the games when it comes to finishing, I am delighted with the way that the team is playing, we are dominating games and restricting the opposition to few chances to get shots in at our goal. Against Chelsea they only had 2 shots on target, and yes one of those resulted in a goal but these are the margins that you deal with when playing at the top level.

(on Formation change) I felt that a change was needed I thought that this would allow us to be able to play in a more fluid way in midfield, allowing for a central midfielder to pick up the ball and link the defensive players to the more attacking players, I feel that it has been relatively successful as in the first game we tried the tactic we scored 4 goals against a side like Marseille, which was a fantastic performance. If we can maintain this form domestically and in Europe then there is no reason why we cannot compete for top honours."

Ajax look to October test

992.png

After earning a credible draw away at Stamford Bridge and winning in the opening match of the Champions League Group Stage matches Ajax are no doubt delighted with the start they have made to their European challenge, and with back to back matches against RB Salzburg they face the decision whether to attempt to qualify for the knockout stage of the Champions League or, aim for a 3rd place finish and aim for a more realistic target in the Europa League. However, before the challenge of Europe Ajax's focus must return to their domestic campaign with a match against reigning champions FC Twente at the Amsterdam ArenA.

With the fans at the Amsterdam ArenA no doubt experiencing a match to remember it was thanks to a late goal from Ganso that secured the 3 points for the home side, but that only came after Ajax were forced to play for an incredible 63 minutes with 10 men after midfielder Adam Vass picked up 2 yellow cards in a 15 minute period. However, despite being down to 10 men Ajax completely dominated the match and were Lodeiro opened the scoring in the 59th minute with a neat finish from a Ganso through ball. After conceding a cheap goal from a set piece, Ajax looked to bounce back and they did that with substitute Victor Hugo grabbing a simple finish after some great work down the right flank from Alderweireld. FC Twente then equalised once again from a set piece and the game looked like it was going to end up 2 - 2 but then star man Ganso charged into the box and scored with a typical placed finish to secure the 3 points for the Amsterdammers.

Ajax continue to look seemingly unbeatable in the Eredivisie as Vitesse were despatched of at the Gelredome Stadium in Arnhem. It didn't take for the Amsterdammers superiority to show, with striker Romelu Lukaku scoring a simple finish after a goal keeping howler with the keeper coming out of the box and heading the ball straight to the Belgian star to fire in a long ranged effort. The second goal came from a wonderful Nicolas Loderio finish who had been given a role as a trequartista up front alongside the Belgian. The win was secured before half time with Romelu Lukaku turning neatly before scoring a placed finish from inside the area.

Ajax carried their domestic form into the Champions League Group Match despatching of Group E whipping boys Red Bull Salzburg courtesy of a brace from Danish starlet Christian Eriksen. The first goal came as a result of Eriksen being pulled down in the penalty area with Romelu Lukaku showing his composure as he scored with consummate ease in the 32nd minute. The game then turned into the Eriksen show with the 18 year old Dane, scoring a simple finish on 45 minutes and doubling his tally just 2 minutes later in first half added time thanks to some wonderful work from Romelu Lukaku.

Despite naming a somewhat weakened side Ajax managed to overcome the challenge that was FC Utrecht. Many would be surprised with Clarence Seedorf naming such a weakened side in the Cup with the board expecting at least qualification to the Final of the competition however it's already become apparent that the new boss has bigger competitions on his mind. Regarding the goal it was a fantastic effort from star man Ganso who continued in his quality run of form scoring a looping header from the far post.

With Ajax lining up in their new favoured 4 - 1 - 2 - 1 - 2 formation that Clarence Seedorf has been resorting too more this month they will no doubt be looking for their full backs to continue to bomb forward in an effort to create chances for the front trio of Lukaku, Lodeiro and Eriksen. With the Rotterdam club currently lying in 10th position completely underachieving for a team of their stature.

After suffering an early set back with Jon Dahl Tomasson putting the home side into the lead, Ajax fans would have been expecting the worse. However, this was just going to spur the Amsterdammers on and a charge led by Ganso and Eriksen saw away side score 4 goals before the break. The first goal came from fantastic run from Ganso who picked up the ball on the half way line and finished it neatly to draw the teams level.

The second goal of the day for Ajax came in the 23rd minute with Eriksen grabbing his first goal of the day after being played into space by Ganso. The third goal came from an unlikely candidate with Peter Masilela scoring a memorable strike from the edge of the area, the away fans looked delighted with the effort as they saw their team tearing their rivals to shreds. The final goal of the rout came in just the 36th minute with Eriksen grabbing his second of the day after being played clean through by Lodeiro to score a well placed finish.

Clarence reflects on early season success

1537196_w2-1.jpg

"I am overjoyed with the way the team have been playing this month, we have beaten our closest rivals in the League, as well as putting ourselves at the top of Group E in the Champions League. We have some key players stepping up to the plate and I believe if they can continue to develop then there is going to be every opportunity that we can go far in all competitions. We are not going to get ahead of ourselves though, we are going to take every game one at a time, and our first game is going to be a home tie against RB Salzburg, a match we will be looking to win, because it will well and truly put us in the driving seat in Group E."

Ajax blew their lead as Leonardo scored in the 58th minute to put NAC Breda 2-1 up and looking good.
