Updates - point score for that season was 1.18 million - puts me 21st on the leaderboard for Sky Bet League 1. Pretty happy with that.

edit: I didnt post the point score for the first incredible season - it was 1.6 million, placing me 9th on the leaderboard for Sky Bet League 2.

2014/15 - points for Sky Bet League 2 - driven by being FA Cup winners. I wonder what the top guys did - one has a point score 3 times higher than mine!

2015/16 - points for Sky Bet League 1 - driven by Euro performance. Again some awesome point scores above me.

I was using v5 in the first season, changed to v9 in the second. It is a little less attacking but more solid in defence, works well against strong teams.

The fans Best XI for the season has now been announced. They largely agreed with me:

You can see from this how many of the best players are loans - 6 in this eleven meaning they couldnt ever all start together in the league!

Can you put here the link for download your tactic please?

2016/17 Preseason report

It's July 2016, and Tranmere Rovers are gearing up for their return to the Championship. They last graced this tier in the competition back in 2000/01, and have finished as high as 4th in 1992/93. The board expects a mid-table finish this time round, and the bookies agree, predicting a 15th place finish and giving the Rovers an outside 20-1 chance of winning the title.

Offseason internationals
Belgium prevailed in the recently completed European Championships, beating France 2:0 in the final. Eden Hazard won the best player award, with compatriot Kevin De Bruyne runner up and Blaise Matuidi third. Christian Benteke was the golden boot winner with just 4 goals - not a particularly prolific tournament obviously! England had a respectable run, knocked out in the semi by a 92nd minute goal from eventual winners Belgium. Leighton Baines was selected in the tournament Dream Team, with Gary Cahill and youngster James Ward-Prouse in the substitutes.

Team movements
Tranmere has made a few changes to the team that won Division 1 last season. Max Power, the League 2 player of the season two years ago, and highest rated player in the team last season, was picked up by newly promoted Premier League team Bournemouth for 3 million pounds. MK Dons looked to the Tranmere squad to beef up their midfield, taking James Rowe, a star of 2014/15 who couldnt break into the team last year, for 300k, and Michael Richardson, a strong backup player for 550k. Craig Roddan has moved to Fleetwood for 40k, and a number of players have left on free transfers. A couple of other players have been attracting big name clubs, including Bordeaux looking to take a couple of my youngsters after scraping past us in the Euros.

Coming in to the team we have a promising backup keeper in Thomas Glover (GK), signed for 850k from Spurs. Donervon Daniels (DC) and Janoi Donacien (DC/DR) have joined permanently on free transfers after lengthy loan spells in the side. We also picked up Kieran Dowell (AMC/MC) from Everton on a free transfer. He has a huge potential but has low skills at the moment - will need careful nurturing to bring him up to first XI standard. Anders Knudsen (DL, DC) joins from Brondby for 750k and Niklas Skokic (DL) from Goteborg for 1.8m. I will retrain one of these into a DR. To be honest Skokic was a bit of an impulse buy, I didnt really need another DL... Denis Mezzetti (MC / AMC) comes in on a free transfer, another young player for the future.

Our loans include Ruben Barbosa from SV Heerenven, a promising young left back, and we have retained Brendan Galloway, Nathan Ake, Philip Billing and Ryan Kent.

Overall a pretty strong squad, with a significant growth potential. I'll be looking to blood young players as much as possible as we build towards promotion into the Premier Division. There is a gap in the striker department, I am looking around at the moment for a suitable young player with the talent to back up Stockton this season and take over the next.

Update: after the England triallists match, we picked up Ivan Calero, a 21 year old striker with growth potential, and Thomas Eisfeld, a 23 year old MC/AMC/AMR/AML with some potential for growth as well. Calero plugs the striker gap, and I'm hoping to get some use out of Eisfeld as a backup MC.

"You wanted to speak to me boss?" A gleam of sweat appeared on Stockton's brow as he stood nervously by my side. I'd called him over during a particularly robust post-match training session. The boys were looking great, slick passing, solid defending... but something wasn't quite right.

"Yes Cole. Your form has been declining recently." Stockton's head fell as he nodded in agreement. It was impossible to deny - after a solid start to our first season in the Championship, 6 goals in 8 games, our main scoring option had totally dried up. It was now five games since Stockton had hit the back of the net, and some particularly poor performances have left the rest of the team in the lurch. Something needs to change, and he knows it.

I pondered the right course of action. Stockton remains our best striker, and really the only viable option in the current lineup. I'd signed Ivan Calero as a backup option but he was far from ready for the first team, and hadnt exactly set the world alight in the reserves either. I settled on a softer course of action.

"I need you to pick yourself up in the next few matches". The implications were clear enough - I'd let him know I was starting to think of him as a problem to be solved, and giving him a chance to improve before we had a tougher chat about his position in the team.

The subtlety got through ok, but he still looked to lack some confidence. "I can't argue with that", he said, still looking at his boots. "But I'm certain I can improve" he added, lifting his head to give me a defiant glare. Hmm. Well, at least he's showing some self belief. I'm worried though. My long term plan for this position was to use Stockton as our main strike force in the Championship while developing a leading Premiership level striker under him. So far I'd failed in my attempts to bring such a prospect into the club, and now Stockton was showing signs of stalling in his development. This is a critical time to ensure he continues to build towards his potential as a good Premiership level striker.

I pondered the best course of action as I let him jog back to his teammates. I'll give Stockton a few games to turn it around before giving him something to think about in the reserve. Time for an overdue chat with my head scout though I think.

I invited him in to my office. "Lyndon, we really need to identify a long term option for striker." He nodded. Now that we are in the Championship the board has given us a free reign to scout across Europe, giving us a much greater chance to find the real hot prospect we need. "Let's start with the best - I think we should look for a Complete Forward. A kid with great goal scoring skills, a good head for football and the vision to create options for others. A star for the future - real Premier League quality"

"That's a big ask boss. Do we have the budget to bring them in? Most of the kids we've identified so far in that category have been valued by their clubs at 100 times their book value. What about more affordable options? Last time we talked I suggested Rekeil Pyke from Rochdale. He could be a star in the Championship, and at 19 is already placed to get some game time."

"Pyke is not an option. I want someone for 3 years time, when we are in the Premier League. I want a kid that will challenge for their national team. We have Stockton, he's good enough to get us into the EPL. I want someone that will take us to the next level again."

"But the cost boss. Remember Mark Rose? He fits the bill, just 17 years old, equally adept at creating goals and scoring them. He could be the star you want, and I sent you that report back in March. You told me that they asked for 40 million pounds! He's only valued at 500k. The top clubs just won't let these kids go."

"Leave the cost to me Lyndon. I just want to know who these kids are. If we can't get them at 17, we'll pinch them younger. Or we'll loan them - once they've played with the boys here they usually want to stay - look at Donacien and Daniels, we got them for nothing after a couple of loans."

"With due respect boss, neither of those guys are in the same bracket as you're asking for now. They're great for now, but they are not up to the Premier League!"

"I agree Lyndon. We've got good backups for those guys though. And remember we signed them on loans way back in division 2. We're Championship now, and on top no less. Start thinking big Lyndon. We'll get there sooner than you think, and I want to be prepared for it. Find me the next star for our front line."

"I'll get the scouts onto it now boss. I don't know how you're going to do it, but we're all keen to do our part to build this team into a powerhouse."

Well, time to see if he can deliver. Where is that kid going to come from? Tomlinson's totally right - we are out of the bidding before it begins for players with real top potential. We've managed to bring a couple of great kids through the system, but we need more. I've been haranguing our board to upgrade our youth network but they can't see past the current season - they only want to focus on first team players. I had to threaten walking out to get the youth facilities upgraded last year... maybe it's time to put it on the line again.

I asked the chairman to convene a board meeting. Mark Palios bought the club just before I joined. He is a born and bred Tranmere man, having played here in the 70s and 80s, and loves the club. He certainly loves the success I've delivered over the last two years. Palios is an accountant by trade - he built a successful career as an accountant specialising in turning businesses around after his playing days were over, and was the chief executive at the FA for a few years. He's a tough nut, and a savvy business man. But he sure takes convincing to make investments in the future, and doesnt ever say yes at first. To be fair, he usually comes around when I lay out how the investment fits with my vision for the club.

As an accountant, he really appreciates the cash our success has brought in. We were forecasting massive debts initially, but a season in Europe and some cup success has put us in a strong position. We are 8 million pounds in the black, and I want him to put some of that into building our prospects for the future.

Palios opens politely. "Welcome, what can we do for you today". I decide to get straight into it. "We need to improve our youth recruitment network. The Merseyside produces a massive amount of talent. But we are competing for talent with some big clubs - most of our young local lads are easy targets for Everton or Liverpool, they want to play in the Premiership. And the other clubs across the north are always sniffing around to poach superstars from under our noses. Their scouts are constantly scouring the local clubs and schools to identify top talent, and it shows. It's been happening for years, we all know it.

Now we're in a position to do something about it. Think about someone like Jason McAteer. He grew up just down the road from Prenton Park, but was picked up by Bolton, and was a star for them and Liverpool before finally coming home to Tranmere for his last years. Now imagine we got to him first, with a promise to build up a team around him. A team to showcase his talent, to grow in stature with him, and be a platform for top tier success. We're in that position now. We're growing in stature, and are gathering a stronger following, and people can see that the momentum is building towards a shot at the Premier League. We need to start thinking about the future and get out there to pick up our local talent.

You made the first investments in this journey last year when you agreed to invest in our youth facilities, and upgrade them to the next level. Now it's time to invest in our recruitment to make the most of our new facilities. We need to compete with the other clubs and get that talent, so we can be a force for years to come."

The board looks a bit shocked by my impassioned plea. "Eh hum", Palios clears his throat. "We agree. We need to keep the local lads. Consider your request granted".

Stunned silence follows. I've never had a request granted at first grab. Never! I guess this is not a massive cost, so maybe that's the reason. Or could it be they are starting to see the longer term, and are sharing my dream for Premier League glory? No, don't get ahead of yourself. It's still too soon to tell. I make my thanks and leave to share the good news with my scouts. We have slightly better odds of getting that new striker from local ranks now. But this is just the start. We will need to continue to upgrade our facilities, they're only just adequate. If I was a promising youngster I'd be tempted by the incredible setup at Liverpool's Kirkby, or Everton's Finch Farm. This will be a long road to lasting success, but the first steps are promising.

Fingers drumming, toes tapping... I can't wait. Impatient for my scout reports to start flooding in, I turn to other options to find my brilliant young star. I know he is out there, just waiting for me to find him. I scour the youth lineups of national teams for options to bring in to the squad. First off the list is Brazil, of course, always a fertile ground for undiscovered attack minder players

...

hmm, that's interesting. Gabriel is a 17 year old striker, valued at just 130k, and with indicative finishing, heading, off the ball, technique and pace all very strong. Dribbling is indicated at 17-20... sounds like he's a complete forward already. He has 18 months left on contract, so might be a bit costly. I send out an offer for a 1 week trial to get a relationship going anyway, and have my team give him a thorough assessment. I doubt we will be able to sign him straight up - if we can afford him, he's probably not going to get a work permit. But if I start the process now maybe I can warm him up so we have a shot during the end of season transfer window, if we earn promotion this year.

His 16 year old strike partner Valteci Angelo also looks promising, although less so than Gabriel. Some key strong stats, but finishing and acceleration are very weak. Shot off an invite for trial anyway.

While my scouts have a pretty good knowledge of northern Europe and Spain, Italy is untapped at the moment. Looking at their youth teams, Nazzareno Monaco looks a good option, at 1.1 million value and enough green stats to be promising at least. I put in a tentative offer for 1 million, and got a 64 million reply. I dont think so! I'll see if I can get anywhere with these Brazilians for now.

Ah the angelic pairing of Brazil's U20 squad. Gabriel and Angelo, I am starting to dream of nabbing one of them.

I get a response from Gabriel. Gremio has no trouble letting me take him on trial for a week, but he doesnt want to come! Not a great shock I suppose. While I don't have the authority to scout Gabriel, I'm pretty sure he's worth it so I take a plunge and put in a prospective transfer bid at their 130k value. Response is 20 million. Well, that's something to work on anyway. I haggle them down to 9 million and get an agreement to enter talks. Brilliant! Of course, I dont have 9 million. I dont have 1 million. I dont even have 130k left in this year's budget. But Gremio doesn't know this!

After a short wait, Gabriel gets back to me. He's really not interested, he loves Gremio, blah blah blah. I like his faithfulness, that's a good sign. I tell him what he wants to hear - we will build a legacy around him. He will be a legend for the club. He likes the sound of that, and we are in talks.

His agent is a sleazy looking bloke with a propensity for making cash for himself. I'm surprised by the first offer - a pretty good looking request actually, a salary that would be pretty much average for my reserves. But wait. The agent wants 625k in fees! That's heaps more than my board can live with. He locks that as a non-negotiable, and talks break down.

Well, progress anyway. I reckon that a repeat of the same process in June next year will be positive - provided we earn promotion. Satisfied with the day's work, I turn back to the job of actually winning league games. Where are the goals going to come from if Stockton's drought doesnt break? He's gone another three games without a goal. Last time out he missed an absolute sitter. I'll give him one more game before bringing him in for another chat...

I waited for a pause in the team song before making my move. "Cole, come over here lad." Stockton came over, grinning from ear to ear. Only the grass and sweat stained state of his shirt betrayed the incredible effort he'd just put in to lift both his own game and that of his teammates. "Well done Cole, that was brilliant. Your finishing today was top-notch.". My words had a visible effect and Stockton went back to enjoy the backslaps of team mates.

We'd just won against Birmingham to retain our top spot in the Championship, but more importantly Stockton had shrugged off his poor recent form to put in an absolute blinder. Scoring two classy goals and setting up another, he was the standout performer in a great team effort, and I needed him to know it.

"Well, that was to be expected, I suppose" I thought as I perused the news of the day. Not even half way through the season, and Manchester United have sacked another manager. This is their third since Ferguson retired, that's one poisoned chalice. Jorge Jesus was the latest victim, shown the door just 11 months after de Gaal's infamous efforts made the Chosen One look like an inspired choice. United are in an unprecedented 17th position in the EPL, only just above the relegation zone. How they can be so low with such a strong team is anyone's guess. Well, maybe not - they have incredible attacking options with Gervinho, Di Maria, Mata, Rooney all playing well. Falcao is underperforming I suppose. But Jesus is totally messing up the tactics to try and squeeze all these players into the squad! And he's playing 4-4-2... not enough in the final third, he's asking players like Di Maria and Gervinho to attack from deep. Di Maria is playing at MC, Gervinho at ML and Mata at MR - all wasted. He's at least playing former Everton player James McCarthy in the right spot, he's able to sure up the defence from DM. But the back four are all in deep trouble, and an injury to de Gea has exposed 19 year old Savic, who is too raw for this level.

The right manager could definitely turn their fortunes around. But with millions at stake, the pressure to achieve results is immense. They'll need nerves of steel to succeed where others have failed...

Ed Woodward has given the hot seat to Andre Villas-Boas, who joined Everton just 10 months ago in January 2016. Interesting choice, Everton are not doing all that much better in 11th spot with a negative goal difference. Villas-Boas has got them attacking though, with a 4-2-3-1 formation that would do well for the Man U attack - Falcao up front, Di Maria, Mata and Gervinho attacking midfielders. Herrara will form half of the centre pairing, with Fellaini or Blind perhaps partnering, and the back four still perhaps vulnerable but with quality in Rojo, Shaw, Blind and Evans/Martinez/Jones/Vertonghen pretty solid, with the right manager. If he can nurse de Gea back to health quickly I think he could do well. But he's never lasted more than 2 year in a manager's job, and has only seen through a whole season a couple of times, so I'm not expecting much.

It opens up another spot in the Premier League, and yours truly is second favourite to take up the job after the Celtic manager Ronny Della. I'd be flattered to get an offer - Everton is my Dad's team, and my Granddad's, and I've always had a soft spot for them. I'm very happy with Tranmere as my Dad grew up in Birkenhead, and my Granddad claimed to have been in the Tranmere youth squad for a bit... but they were drawn to the top flight heroics of bigger neighbours Everton. I wonder how I'll respond given the choice?

Ah, the circle of life. Hakuna matata and all that. Just a couple of weeks after upheaval at both Man U and Everton, guess who got the sack from their current job now. Moyes, who forged the Everton to Old Trafford path now taken by Villas-Boas, is out at Southampton who only just gave him the nod in February. And the bookies have installed as favourite a certain unemployed Dutchman - Louis van Gaal. Someone has a sense of humour!

I interrupted a friendly chat between our Director of Football Steve Coppell and Assistant Manager Dave Watson. The atmosphere in the staff rooms is very congenial at the moment, with the team sitting on top of the league and looking good for their lead. "Hey Steve, switch on the tele will you? Poyet is about to give his pre-match conference?"

... click... yes, all the normal stuff. Oh here's an interesting question - what does he think about our "overachievement"? "They are only winning because other teams are underestimating them". Well, he's not pulling any punches is he. Pretty strange response though. Does that mean he is underestimating us, because he doesnt think we are as good as we have appeared to be? Sounds like he is being complacent by accusing everyone else of complacency against us. This latest mind game is a real mind blower... I will spend the whole of the next day just trying to work out what he actually means!

Or not. I turn to Coppell. "He's really lost it", I say, grabbing another cup of tea. "Our lads won't need much of an excuse to get fired up for the next game after that".

Norwich is second in the league, only 6 points back. A win in this game would open up a huge 9 point margin at the top of the table, and it's only a few games until Christmas. We need this one - we certainly won't be complacent come Saturday.

As I made my way back to the office from the press conference I got a newsflash on my phone - Everton went for Delia in the end so I won't have to worry about choosing there! Well that's a bit of a weight off my mind, I dont want to leave Tranmere until I've seen my vision through or am forced out. I would have said no to Everton, but how could I have spoken to my Dad afterward? Yikes. Happy that one is out of my hands.

As I boarded the team bus going to Norwich I took the opportunity for a quick team meeting to reflect on our achievements so far.

"Here we are lads. Here we are indeed. A few of you were here with me when we started this journey two and a half years ago. We'd just been dumped from Division 1, our bank balance was in the red, and we had a brand new management team. It could have gone anywhere really. Well, it's been a massive ride since then! We did ourselves proud in Europe, have mixed it with the big boys in the FA Cup and made short work of both Division 2 and 1. We all thought it would be a step up in the Championship, and it has been. We've faced tougher defenders, and powerful attacks. But we've prevailed, and even though noone gave us a chance we're on top, comfortably. Poyet doesnt think we deserve to be here. He thinks we're only here because we're an unknown quantity, and everyone else is underestimating us. He's pretty confident Norwich will smash us today.

I say we can kick on from here. You're all playing with everything you've got, and I just want to let you know that I'm not one of the people that underestimated you. I think we can keep this up. Let's show them what we are really made of!".

A murmur rose up from the gathered team. That's a healthy morale boost for an already happy group. They're fired up now and ready to go... I'm confident too.
