A tutor for a particular young player should be chosen very carefully. The following points should be considered when matching a player with a potential tutor:

• The players should ideally have similar personalities in order to avoid a potential clash, which would in an early end to the tutoring and a bad relationship being developed between the two players. If the young player states that they do not intend to work with the potential tutor then you can choose to back out of the conversation to avoid potential failure of the tutoring, rather than trying to convince him. You are then able to select a different senior player to try again.

• The tutor should have a positive personality such as professional or determined. Personalities with good Professionalism are best because more professional players will improve more during training, thus adding further benefits to the tutee’s development. The personalities which imply good Professionalism are model citizen, perfectionist, resolute, professional, spirited, evasive and reserved.

• The tutor should have better mental attributes than the tutee. Otherwise the tutee’s mental attributes may decrease.

• The tutor should not possess any preferred moves that would be detrimental to the tutee’s game. For example, shoots from distance if the tutee has poor Long Shots
