unrealistic transfers

Hi, am currently doing a Portsmouth save, and im in my 2nd season. I was playing Preston and noticed they had some very good players, Joey Barton, Ryan Taylor, Jay Bothroyd, Ebanks Blake, Darren Bent, Ben Amos, Ross Wallace. Thing is there 3rd bottom( they did beat me 4-0) and im currently 5th. Just couldnt believe the amount of decent players on small wages they've acquired. Has anyone else come across this?
