This is a real beginners question but, here goes. If I download an update which brings all the transfers up to date, won't it get screwed up in the first transfer window, or indeed when starting a new game as I would have to do for the update to take effect?

You can disable transfer budgets in the first transfer window when starting a game (minimises transfer activity). The update will make all teams start the season with their end of January squads though should you use it.

When you patch your game current save games will still use the old database but everything else that is updated (Match engine, bug fixes ect.) will run on that new patch. You will have to start a new game to use the updated database.
