NEGREDO RETURNS

View attachment 196119

Alvaro Negredo returned from injury to the delight of the Valencia fans. Negredo scored 28 goals in all competitions last season, and with Barbosa & Alacer both firing in the early games of the season, Valencia fans will be very excited to see the strong competition up front.

BARCELONA 3 - 2 VALENCIA
Marko Marin, Alvaro Negredo

Despite the result, I am very pleased with the performance. We showed great character after conceding a couple goals, and we took Barcelona right to the brink, showing we mean business this season. Hopefully we can get a result when they visit us in the new year. Neymar gave them the lead early on, and when Danilo turned into his own net, I thought we were in for a long day. But a magnificent goal from Marko Marin just after the break, followed by a looping header, after some insane passing play, from Alvaro Negredo pulled us level. Barca showed their immense talent to essentially walk the ball through our defence to allow Arda Turan to give them winner in injury time.

VALENCIA 2 - 1 OSASUNA
Alvaro Negredo, Andre Gomes

Absolutely obsurds scences for our first goal here. A cross from Paco Alacer was cleared, bounced off Alvaro Negredo, beat the keeper and rolled in off the post. We were 2-0 up shortly after, Youri Tielemans played the ball to Andre Gomes on the edge of the box. The Portugese international showed his class by turning an shooting instantly, beating the keeper low from 20 yards. Victor Pastrana scored a tap-in at the far post late on to give Osasuna a consolation goal.

VALENCIA 1 - 1 ALMERIA
Gabriel Barbosa

Disappointed doesn't even explain it. Over 20 shots on goal and we couldn't grab a win. Gabriel Barbosa scored a beautiful volley from a Jose Gaya cross after 23 minutes and the fans were optimistic. But some poor luck, coupled with a screamer from Quique which left Ospina rooted, Almeria leave here with a point, seeing us drop down to 5th place.

VILLAREAL 1 - 4 VALENCIA
Rodrigo, Gabriel Barbosa (2), Santi Mina

Thats more like it! After an 8-0 thumping to Barcelona last week, Villareal were not in the best of form. Cedric Bakambu did give the fans something to cheer for early on, but Rodrigo's goal just before half time levelled it up. Gabriel Barbosa made it 4 goals in 4 games, netting twice, before substitute Santi Mina scored his first league goal for the club.

A WORD WITH THE BOSS

"It has been a good month for us. We lost a couple of points, but we are working very well as a team and I think we can press on from here and really make a mark on the league."

VALENCIA KEEP FIRING

View attachment 195887

Valencia came into October without a loss in 3 games, and just one defeat this season. Despite the international break, there was 5 games in October, with a mouth watering tie at the Bernabeau to round it off. Valencia's strikers Negredo & Barbosa have been in top form so far, and the Valencia strikers continued to show their class. But, they were humbled in an absolute battering in Madrid.

RAYO VALLECANO 0 - 3 VALENCIA
Alvaro Negredo (2), Gabriel Barbosa

Easy win to see us into the international break. Alvaro Negredo showed his strength to beat his man and score from a Fede Cartabia pass. A quickfire double from Negredo & Barbosa (assisting each other), in the second half proved to be the difference in a comfortable win.

INTERNATIONAL BREAK
- Gabriel Barbosa debuts for Brazil, netting his first goal against Chile.
- Youri Tielemans also wins his first cap for Belgium.
- Barbosa returns injured, pulling his hamstring, keeping him out for 4 weeks.

VALENCIA 1 - 1 MALAGA
Paco Alcacer

Poor performance from a rotated side. The injury to Barbosa, coupled with an illness for Negredo, left us lacking up front. We were almost about to drop the whole game when Ezequiel Rescaldini netted with just 8 minutes remaining. However, Paco Alcacer stepped up to claim a point for us, heading in a cross from Antonio Barragan.

INJURY TROUBLES MOUNT
Another key injury for us, as Andre Gomes strained a stomach muscle during a weight session. The Portugese international will miss 4-5 weeks of action.

VALENCIA 3 - 0 REAL SOCIEDAD

Rodrigo, Alvaro Negredo (2)

Much better! Negredo returns to the side and runs the show again. Jose Gaya's cross set up the first one, with Rodrigo losing his marker to head in at the near post. Alvaro Negredo got the second with a powerful volley from Hugo Mallo's cross. The big Spaniard tapped in the 3rd late on after Sociedad failed to clear from a corner.

GRANADA 1 - 3 VALENCIA
Paco Alcacer (3)

With games coming thick & fast, we had to shake up the squad, and they delivered! Paco Alcacer netted a first half hat trick to give us a great win that sees us climb above Espanyol into 3rd place, just 2 points behind Real Madrid, and 5 behind Barcalona. Some credit has to go to our full backs. Antonio Barragan set up 2 of the goals, while Joao Cancelo set up the third. Barragan now has 5 assists in just 8 games!

REAL MADRID 9 - 1 VALENCIA
Paco Alcacer

Absolutely woeful. After the good performance against Barca, I had high hopes for a tight game, but we were undone & humiliated in the clubs worst ever defeat. The rout started in the 10th minute, when Adrien Rabiot gave away a penalty that was converted by Cristiano Ronaldo. Diego Alves done everything in his power to keep Madrid out, but Diego Rolan netted his first for the club at the 3rd attempt of asking just before the 20 minute mark.

Just 4 minutes later, Alvaro Morata prodded in from a lack of communication when dealing with a cross. Ronaldo got his 2nd just 2 minutes later, tapping in Diego Rolan's cross. Valencia did pull one back, Dani Parejo finding an immaculate through ball that was put in by Paco Alcacer, his 7th of the season.

2 powerful headers from Alvaro Morata and a cheeky finish from Ronaldo made it 7 at half time, with Valencia fans preying for the full time whistle already. Madrid took the foot off the gas in the second half, but still managed to find two more goals. Alvaro Morata was a real menace in the air, and he headed in his 4th on the 67th minute. James Rodriguez finished off the game with a minute left, finished off a great counter attack.

An absolute shocking day overall which just highlights the power gap in this league.

ATLETICO MANAGER SACKED

View attachment 195248View attachment 195249

After just 7 months in charge, Rudi Garcia has been sacked as manager of Atletico Madrid. Garcia managed Atletico to a 3rd place finish after taking over in March, but has struggled to make an impact so far this season, with the club struggling in 16th place!

The club have confirmed that West Ham manager Frank De Boer will be taking over with immediate effect. De Boer took over The Hammers in March, but could not prevent the club being relegated to the Championship. While the club look to be in a good position to bounce right back to the top flight, De Boer said that the opportunity could not be passed.

PACO ON FIRE

View attachment 195243

After a humiliating defeat to Real Madrid at the end of October, Valencia manager Thierry Henry was keen to put it behind them and push on. With all the focus on the clubs strikers, this month we look at Paco Alcacer. The 23 year old was a major target for the likes of Liverpool, Borussia Dortmund & Monaco in the summer, but Henry held on to him, and it would seem that his faith is paying off, with the Spaniard netting 5 goals in 4 games in October! With games against high flying Bilbao & Espanyol coming up, can Paco continue his top form?

4/11/16 - La Liga
ESPANYOL 0 - 1 VALENCIA
Gabriel Barbosa

A top win for us against an Espanyol side who were climbing awfully close to us in the league. Gabriel Barbosa netted the only goal of them game, a cool finish from an Alvaro Negredo pass just after the half hour mark. A remarkable defence performance has to be highlighted. Ospina made several top saves to keep us ahead and we had the quality to hold on and get our progress back on track.

19/11/16 - La Liga
VALENCIA 3 - 0 LEVANTE
Paco Alcacer (3)

We returned from the international break with a comfortable victory over Levante, with the in-form man Paco Alcacer netting his 2nd hat trick of the season. The first came from a brilliant through-ball from Joao Cancelo. Paco still had it all to do, chesting the ball down, cutting inside & placing his shot in the bottom corner. Shkodran Mustafi was pushed in the box for a penalty, which Alcacer tucked away with confidence to give us a 2-0 half-time lead. The third came from another Joao Cancelo cross, with Alcacer flicking the ball over the keeper with a beautiful header. That makes it 8 goals in his last 6 games!

26/11/16 - La Liga
VALENCIA 6 - 2 ATHLETIC BILBAO
Rodrigo (3), Paco Alcacer (2), Andre Gomes

Massive win for us against another high-flying team. Bilbao sat in 5th before this game. The man in-form Paco Alcacer turned provider for the first, passing to Rodrigo on the edge of the box. The Spaniard turned and curled the ball beautifully past a rooted goalkeeper. Rodrigo hit a second goal just before half time, turning in a cross from stand-in left back Aymen Abdennour. The hat-trick came just after half time, when Paco Alcacer was pushed in the box. Rodrigo took charge of the situation and dispatched comfortably.

It was only a matter of time before Paco Alcacer turned from provider to goalscorer, and he headed in a Barragan cross on 54 minutes. Borja Viguera pulled two goals back for Bilbao, but we never took our foot of the gas, and Andre Gomes hit an absolute stunner to restore a 3 goal gap. Gomes found a pinpoint pass for Paco Alcacer to bag his second of the game, and 10th in 7 games to finish off the rout with a minute remaining.

30/11/16 - Spanish Cup - 4th Rnd, Leg 1
OSASUNA 3 - 2 VALENCIA
Adrien Rabiot, Alvaro Negredo

We rested a number of key players, and brought in several young stars from our B team. One standout was Salvador, who had a solid game in the middle with Adrien Rabiot. Victor Pastrana gave Osasuna a very early lead, but Adrien Rabiot calmly tucked away his first Valencia goal just a minute later. The game continued as a stalemate until the 70th minute, when sub Alvaro Negredo headed us into the lead. However, a lack of concentration allowed Alex Sanchez to sneak two goals, giving Osasuna the advantage going into the second leg.

VALENCIA PLAYER STATS

GOALS
Paco Alcacer - 12 goals
Gabriel Barbosa - 7 goals
Alvaro Negredo - 7 goals

ASSISTS
Antonio Barragan - 6 assists (joint top of the league)
Paco Alcacer - 4 assists
Joao Cancelo - 4 assists

RIDING HIGH INTO THE WINTER BREAK

View attachment 194827

Valencia enjoyed an unbeaten November in La Liga, and were continuing to put pressure on the big two teams in the league. The winter break would only last just over a week this season, but Valencia were looking too go into it in the same form.

4/12/2016 - La Liga
SEVILLA 3 - 1 VALENCIA
Paco Alcacer

This was a very disappointing loss, after a very good start. Paco Alcacer netted his 13th of the season within 20 minutes, and we looked to be on for another vital win. However, Eugene Konoplyanka tapped in a cross from Gael Kakuta just before half time. In the second half, we were the poorer side. Ruben Vezo took down Kevin Gameiro in the box, and the French striker dispatched the penalty for 2-1. Gael Kakuta, who gave our defence problems all day, netted a brilliant solo goal in the dying minutes to pull Sevilla a little closer to the pack at the top.

INJURY NEWS
Disaster for Valencia, as Paco Alcacer was taken off injured against Sevilla. The striker will miss 5 weeks of action a Knee injury.

11/12/2016 - La Liga
VALENCIA 4 - 0 LAS PALMAS
Youri Tielemans, Andre Gomes, Gabriel Barbosa (2)

A much better win in a game we were most definitely favourites. Gabriel Barbosa beat his man on the touchline and fired in a low cross which was tapped in by Youri Tielemans, the young Belgian's first goal since his £15m signing in the summer. Barbosa was involved in the second, winning a penalty from Jose Crespo, which Portugese midfielder Andre Gomes coolly dispatched.

The young Brazilian cemented his Man-of-the-match status in the second half, making it 3-0 when he tucked in Jose Gaya's cross. Barbosa finished off the rout with just two minutes remaining, tapping in a saved shot from Santi Mina. 2 goals & 2 assists from the young Brazilian to cap off a brilliant day.

14/12/2016 - Spanish Cup - 4th Round, 2nd Leg
VALENCIA 4 - 0 OSASUNA
Valencia win 6-3 on aggregate
Marko Marin, Rodrigo (2), Jose Gaya

We qualify for the next round in style, after a shaky first leg. Marko Marin hit his 2nd of the season when Rodrigo kept the ball in play, played it back to Joao Cancelo who squared for the German to fire it in. Osasuna will feel a little hard done by with the second goal, as a questionable offside call went in our favour as Rodrigo netted. The rout continued in the second half, Cancelo was again the architect, with his cross coming all the way for Jose Gaya. The young full-back showed great composure to beat his man and coolly tuck away. Rodrigo headed in the fourth from a brilliant team move to secure a match against against Real Betis in the 5th round.

19/12/2016 - La Liga
VALENCIA 3 - 0 REAL BETIS
Santi Mina, Andre Gomes (2)

A little preview of the Spanish cup as we took on the team we were drawn against. There was a lot of rotation in the final game before the break, and young striker Santi Mina hit his 2nd of the season after 18 minutes, finishing off a brilliant move. The star of the show was Portugese international Andre Gomes, who is being linked with a move to Arsenal. The 23 year old netted two beautiful goals either side of half time, to show to his manager that he should be playing more games. It is now 5 goals in just 6 league appearances!

INJURY NEWS
More injury news for Valencia coming out of the game against Betis. Jose Gaya picked up a minor foot injury which will keep him out for 3 weeks. Hugo Mallo found himself on the doctors table for significantly longer. The right-back Strained Knee Ligaments, keeping him on the sidelines for 8 weeks.

HALF-SEASON REVIEW
View attachment 194814

At the half way mark we sit comfortably in 3rd place only 1 point behind Real Madrid! We are constantly putting pressure on the top two, and hopefully can continue our form into the new year. Both Madrid & Barca have to come to us, and we will be hoping we can take points from those games.

View attachment 194810

While Luis Suarez is completely destroying the league at the moment with 18 goals in 17 games, our players are making there mark. Paco Alcacer has 13 in 13. with the best Mins per goal ratio, and a fantastic conversion rate. Gabriel Barbosa is also going strong in the records, with 9 goals in 12 games!

View attachment 194809

Antonio Barragan has been an inspiration at right full-back this season. At 6 assists, it is the joint highest in the league, level with possibly the best right-back in the world, and without a doubt the best player in the world. With a major injury to Hugo Mallo, Barragan's run is going to continue into the new year without a doubt.

TRANSFER RUMOURS

- Andre Gomes' good form hasn't gone un-noticed. Both Arsenal & Manchester City has expressed an interest in the 23 year old.
- Liverpool are said to be looking for a new front man, with Valencia duo Paco Alcacer & Alvaro Negredo being touted as possible targets.
- Thierry Henry has expressed an interest in Atletico winger Yannick Ferreira Carrasco. However, his £21m valuation may prove to be a stumbling block in the January window.

JAM-PACKED JANUARY

View attachment 194700

With the inclusion of Spanish cup fixtures, January lined up a whopping 9 matches for Thierry Henry's Valencia side. As if that was challenging enough, Henry had the task on his hand of keeping his star players at the club during the transfer window. They would also have to deal with the back end of the month without Aymen Abdennour, who would be representing Tunisia at the African Nations Cup. With a mouth-watering, top of the table, tie against Barcelona at the end of the month, lets see whether Valencia could continue to put pressure on the two La Liga giants.

1/1/2017 - La Liga

CELTA VIGO 2 - 3 VALENCIA
Gabriel Barbosa (2), Andre Gomes

We start the new year with a shaky win against mid-table Celta Vigo. Iago Aspas continued his good scoring form, giving Celta the lead early on. Their lead didn't last long, as we went straight up the other end and scored, Gabriel Barbosa turning in a cross from Antonio Barragan. The duo were at it again just after the half hour mark, with Barbosa heading his 11th league goal of the season to give us a half time lead. On 67 minutes, Youri Tielemans threaded through Andre Gomes to score his 4th goal in his last 3 games to give us some comfort. Levy Madinda tapped in a late goal for Celta, but we were able to hold on for the win.

4/1/2017 - Spanish Cup - 5th Round, Leg 1
VALENCIA 3 - 0 REAL BETIS
Fran Villalba, Rodrigo, Aymen Abdennour

With games coming thick & fast, we introduced a number of young B team players again. Fran Villalba was one who shone, netting the first goal in beautiful fashion. Rodrigo continued his good scoring form, when he does get games, heading in a cross from Toni Lato. Aymen Abdennour netted his first of the season to give us a strong chance of qualifying for the Quarter-Finals.

NEW CONTRACTS
Following their impressive displays, the club can confirm both Fran Villalba & Salvador have signed new contracts with the club.

8/1/2017 - La Liga
EIBAR 0 - 3 VALENCIA
Paco Alcacer, Gabriel Barbosa (2)

Paco Alcacer made an early return from injury, and it was him who got on the score sheet first, with Antonio Barragan once again setting up the goal. Things went from bad to worse for Eibar, when Lillo was sent off before half-time for a reckless challenge. For the second game running, Brazilian Gabriel Barbosa netted twice, both goals essentially carbon copies. Barragan threw the ball in to Paco Alcacer, who cross to the six yard box where Barbosa headed in both times.

11/1/2017 - La Liga
REAL BETIS 2 - 0 VALENCIA
Valencia win 3-2 on aggregate

Terrible performance. I think the congested fixture list got the best of us. Luckily we were able hold on and advance through on aggregate. Alvaro Vadillo was a menace for Betis, netting one & having a shot rebound off Aymen Abdennour.

15/1/2017 - La Liga
ATLETICO MADRID 0 - 0 VALENCIA

Another shaky performance, but this was considered a big match and I am glad we got the point. Minor injuries to Negredo & Alcacer meant we were lacking in attacking options, and Marko Marin also picked up a minor head injury during the match. We will move on quickly and hope to get back to winning ways.

BID REJECTED
Valencia have rejected a massive £42m bid from Liverpool for striker Paco Alcacer. Another bid, of a much lower value, from Barcelona has also been rejected.

18/1/2017 - Spanish Cup - Quarter Final, Leg 1
VALENCIA 1 - 1 SEVILLA
Gabriel Barbosa

Not good. The squad are looking very tired and we have left ourselves an uphill struggle to qualify for the Semi-finals. Gabriel Barbosa gave us the lead, and it looked like we could hold on. However, big striker Fernando Llorente headed in an equaliser just 4 minutes from time to give Sevilla the advantage.

DONE DEAL
View attachment 194710

Valencia winger Fede Cartabia has left the club to join Bundesliga side Hoffenheim in a deal worth £14.25m.

21/1/2017 - La Liga
VALENCIA 1 - 0 CORDOBA
Fran Villalba

Young Attacker Fran Villalba netted his first La Liga goal to spare our blushes here. It was a terribly frustrating afternoon, and it looked like we were going to lose out on an easy 3 points. But Villalba came off the bench to score a wicked volley, showing great signs of promise to keep us well in the race at the top.

24/1/2017 - Spanish Cup - Quarter Final, Leg 2
SEVILLA 3 - 0 VALENCIA

Terribly disappointed with this. Sevilla again prove to be a thorn in our side as they take us out easily. Gael Kakuta was again a menace against us, and he netted an impressive hat trick. We need to move on quickly from this and focus on Barcelona! The only bright side of our elimination is we can put our sole focus to challenging in the league.

Thanks for reading :)

Wow, great stuff! I'm excited to see how you do against Barca. With how La Liga deals with tie breakers, these home games against top sides can become must wins, so good luck!

VALENCIA - BARCELONA
A huge match! 2nd vs 3rd and a win for us would see us go level on points with Barca, just 1 point off Madrid.

(13) GOAL! BARCELONA (0-1)

View attachment 194670

An absolute corker from Sergio Busquets find the top corner of Diego Alves' net. Absolutely no chance for him.

(43) PENALTY .................. VALENCIA

Dani Alves wrongly challenges Dani Parejo in the corner of the box and the referee points straight to the spot! Parejo takes charge himself ........

(44) GOALLLLLLLL! (1-1)

(50) CHANCE!

Possession is constantly changing until the ball finds its way to maestro Lionel Messi. He shifts the ball across to Carlos Vela who plays in Luis Suarez. The league's top scorer couldn't find the net this time, with Diego Alves standing strong to deny the Uruguayan.

(61) POST!

Another chance for Barca, as Ivan Rakitic hits a snap shot from 20yard that beats everybody but the post. Diego Alves watches on and breathes a sigh of relief as he smothers the loose ball.

(64) RED CARD!!!!

View attachment 194675

Joao Cancelo wins the ball from Carlos Vela in the box. He launches the ball towards Andre Gomes to start a counter, but the Portugese international is hacked down by Javier Mascherano. The referee has no doubt in his mind that is was a reckless challenge and sends the Argentinian off! Game on now for Valencia!

(66) CHANCE!

Finally a chance for Valencia. Rodrigo weaves his way into the box from a wide position, but his low shot is stopped & held by Ter Stegen.

(80) GOAL !!!!!!!!!!

View attachment 194674

Two substitutes combine as Tielemans find Marko Marin in space. The German turns superbly and threads a bal through to Paco Alcacer. The Barca defenders look for a flag that never comes and the striker smashes in his 15th of the season to give Valencia the lead with just 10 minutes left!!

(87) SAVED!

Heart in mouth moment for the Valencia fans as they give away a free-kick about 23 yards out. Leo Messi steps up, gets it over the wall, but not past a determined Diego Alves, who is at full stretch to protect the 3 points.

(90+3) FULL TIME!

"It is a magnificent moment for the fans & the players. I think people can start to talk about us as real title contenders, and if we can continue on from this result, I see no reason why we cannot mount a serious challenge" - Thierry Henry

"A lot of managers would be quick to pin the blame on the officials, but I think that in both situations, the ref made the correct call." - Laurent Blanc

ESTABLISHING A CHALLENGE

View attachment 194386

After a sensational win to cap off a hectic January against Barcelona, Valencia showed the world that they are no push-overs, and are too be seriously considered in this title race. A relatively easy run of fixtures in February, Valencia were looking to continue their great run which hasn't seen them lose a League game since early December.

5/2/2017 - La Liga
OSASUNA 0 - 3 VALENCIA
Andre Gomes, Paco Alcacer, Alvaro Negredo

We continue our winning streak with a comfortable win over Osasuna. Andre Gomes netted his 7th of the season with a tidy side-foot volley from a Jose Gaya cross just after the half hour mark. We made our lead very comfortable just after the hour mark. Paco Alcacer continued his top form, weaving in from the left before placing the ball in the bottom corner. Alvaro Negredo has had a pretty torrid run of minor injuries & illnesses, but he returned off the bench, and scored with a powerful header just 3 minutes later to round off a great day. There was a massive cheer throughout the Mestalla as news broke that Barcelona had LOST at home to struggling Cordoba, meaning Valencia pull into 2nd, 3 points above the champions.

11/2/2017 - La Liga
VALENCIA 0 - 0 VILLAREAL

Disappointing to drop points here, but Villareal are going very strong in the league at the moment, and were absolutely rock solid today. There was an absolute barrage of attacks from all our players, but they held firm for what turned out to be a valuable point for Villareal. There was more good news as Barcelona dropped pointless again, this week playing out a goalless draw with Osasuna.

20/2/2017 - La Liga
VALENCIA 2 - 0 RAYO VALLECANO
Shkodran Mustafi, Jose Gaya

This was almost another frustrating day like last week. It wasn't until the 77th minute that we broke the deadlock, from the unlikeliest of sources. Big German defender Shkodran Mustafi netted his first of the season, flicking a Marko Marin free kick off the bar before tapping into an open net. There was a massive sense of relief around the stadium, and as Rayo looked to salvage a point, we countered and Jose Gaya finished off the move to seal the win for us. Madness occured as Barca lost a 4th game in a row, beaten 2-0 by Almeria!

5/2/2017 - La Liga
ALMERIA 2 - 3 VALENCIA
Marko Marin, Gabriel Barbosa, Paco Alcacer

Almeria beat Barcelona last year, so despite their poor position, I saw them as a big threat. We establish a big first half lead, and almost threw the game away in the second half. Marko Marin had publicly complained how little he was playing, and he showed why he should feature as a rocketed the ball from the edge of the area off the bar. Gabriel Barbosa returned from illness and got back on the scoresheet, tapping in a cross from Paco Alcacer. Alcacer got in on the act two minutes later, heading in a cross from Jose Gaya to give us a comfortable half time leader. In the second half we took the foot of the gas and Almeria almost made us pay. Despite a red card for Serey Dia, Cristian Herrera netted twice to put us on edge and make us concentrate hard for the win. The weekly Barca update came in as they recorded yet another loss, this time being beaten 3-1 by Villareal, putting us an incredible 9 points ahead of them.

CHAMPS OR CHUMPS?

View attachment 194373

Not sure what on earth has happened at the Nou Camp, but my word Laurent Blanc will be happy to see the end of February. Losing 4 out of 5 league games, coupled with a thumping by Dortmund in the Champions League, things are not looking great for the champions. However, with the talent at their disposal, it is only a matter of time before they return to winning ways.

MARCH MADNESS

View attachment 192839

After a chaotic February, March began with the inevitable happening; Laurent Blanc was sacked as Barcelona manager, after the Champions all but fell out of the running to retain their title. Head of Youth Development Jordi Roura has been named as the Interim manager until the end of the season.

Switching focus back to Valencia and Thierry Henry was potentially leading his Valencia side to their first La Liga title in 13 years. Giants Real Madrid were the only team standing in his way, and the two would lock horns in a vital month for both clubs.

4/3/2017 - La Liga
MALAGA 0 - 3 VALENCIA
Carlos Kameni (o.g), Dani Parejo, Andre Gomes

The scoreline flatters us here as we were not at the races today. We took the lead through a terribly unlucky moment for Malaga goalkeeper Carlos Kameni. The Cameroonian turned the ball into his own net after Andre Gomes' header hit the bar, and rebounded off a diving keeper. In the second half our good fortunes continued. Gabriel Barbosa's run on the counter attack confused the Malaga defence and the young Brazilian was taken down. Dani Parejo dispatched from the spot, but needed help from the woodwork. Malaga continued to press and kept Diego Alves busy, but the final nail in the coffin came on 67 minutes, when Joao Cancelo's cross was headed back across goal by Andre Gomes, the Portugese international's 8th of the season.

10/3/2017 - La Liga
VALENCIA 4 - 0 GRANADA
Gabriel Barbosa (2), Bruno (o.g), Alvaro Negredo

An incredibly comfortable win for us against a Granada side who had been floating around mid-table all season. The game was completely over before half-time, and the rout started with young Brazilian Gabriel Barbosa coolly finishing off a great through-ball from Negredo just after the 20 minute mark. The lead was doubled just 7 minutes later when Negredo's header was saved, but the goalkeeper pushed it onto his own defender Bruno, the ball rolling over the line to the dismay of the Granada players. Alvaro Negredo did get his goal just 4 minutes later. Antonio Barragan crossed for the big Spaniard to nod into the goal. Just 2 minutes later and the game was put beyond doubt when Gabriel Barbosa hit his second of the game, again turning in a through ball from Negredo.

15/3/2017 - La Liga
REAL SOCIEDAD 0 - 1 VALENCIA
Paco Alcacer

We continue our fantastic run, now standing at 14 league games unbeaten, with a messy win over Sociedad. Paco Alcacer netted the only goal of the game, firing in after a brilliant back-heeled through ball from Santi Mina. The game was overshadowed by a horrific injury to striker Rodrigo. The Spaniard was stretched off, with scans later revealing a broken foot, keeping the striker out for up to 5 months, and writing him out for the rest of the season.

19/3/2017 - La Liga
VALENCIA 1 - 1 REAL MADRID

(Details in seperate post)

29/3/2017 - La Liga
LEVANTE 1 - 1 VALENCIA
Alvaro Negredo

We confirm qualification for next years Champions League in unconvincing fashion. The game was very flat until Levante took the lead through Victor Casadesus, who volleyed in a cross from Juanfran, a truely brilliant goal. Levante couldn't hold on for long. Alvaro Negredo headed in from a massive up-field punt from Neven Subotic.

A WORD WITH THE BOSS

"It is fantastic. We have been working hard all season for this and everybody at this club deserves it. I look forward to next year in the Champions League." - Thierry Henry

"Of course we have to be wary of them. They have shown they are a great team and we will be working as hard as ever to achieve the result". - Rafa Benitez.

(1) CHANCE!
The game starts incredibly fast, and Valencia almost take the lead through Aymen Abdennour, who's header floats past the post from a Dani Parejo free-kick.

(3) CHANCE!

Valencia continue to pressure, and they work the ball around the box. Youri Tielemans lets fire from 25 yards, and the Belgian beats Keylor Navas, but can't beat the woodwork, striking the bar and going over.

(4) CHANCE!

Valencia manage to clear a free-kick from Toni Kroos. They counter quick but Paco Alcacer can't find the target in the end.

(6) CHANCE!

Valencia again work the ball into the box beautifully and Andre Gomes sees his shot well saved by Keylor Navas. From the resulting corner, Aymen Abdennour flicks the ball on for Shkodran Mustafi, who heads the ball onto the top of the bar and over.

(18) INJURY!
View attachment 192790

Paco Alcacer goes down under a challenge from Jesus Vallejo. The forward looks to have a foot injury, but he signals to the bench that a substitute is not required.

(25) CHANCE!

Tielemans clears the ball from a corner. Danilo manages to find Gabriel Barbosa, who is unable to find the net.

(33) GOAL!
View attachment 192788

Despite all their efforts, Valencia find themselves behind from an outstanding goal from Toni Kroos. The German midfielder gets the ball from Isco and lets rip an absolute rocket that would beat any goalkeeper.

(44) NO GOAL!

Valencia have the ball over the line, but its not gonna count. More fantastic passing play around the area, and Gomes finds Paco Alcacer who finishes neatly. The striker is adjudged to be offside, and the score remains 1-0 Madrid.

(57) CHANCE!

The second half started a lot slower than the first, and Madrid started the stronger side. Cristiano Ronaldo found a perfect pass for Isco, but the midfielder couldn't beat Diego Alves.

(66) GOAL!
View attachment 192784

More sensational build-up play and a brilliant finish to top it off. Aymen Abdennour passes to Gabriel Barbosa on the left of the box. The Brazilian turns and fires the ball across goal, planting in the bottom corner for 1-1!

(79) CHANCE!

Diego Alves rescues Valencia again. Cristiano Ronaldo receives the ball from Isco and the Portuguese international lets rip from distance. The ball thunders off the inside of the post and lands in the grateful clutches of Alves' arms.

(90+1) CHANCE!

Marko Marin finds Alvaro Negredo with a sensational over-the-top ball. The Spaniard bears down on goal, but a last ditch challenge from Sergio Ramos saves the league leaders.

"I thought we were the better team. We had some excellent opportunities that we should be taking. However I am happy to earn a point" - Thierry Henry

"I felt we were unlucky, but I feel we are still favourites for the title and that is what is important." - Rafa Benitez

SPRING BLUES

View attachment 192451

After securing qualification for the Champion's League, Valencia turned their attention to the run in, and a title challenge that is still very much alive. Sevilla & Bilbao posed the biggest threat to Valencia's hopes, but with Madrid's run in just as favourable, things would be tough for Thierry Henry's side.

3/4/2017 - La Liga
VALENCIA 2 - 1 ESPANYOL
Gabriel Barbosa, Joao Cancelo

Espanyol made this very difficult for us, but we managed to edge them out in the end. Gabriel Barbosa continued his sensational form this season, finishing off a great counter attack after a long ball from Andre Gomes. Espanyol hit straight back with Thievy Bifouma losing his marker in the box and slotting past Diego Alves. We pushed and pushed for a winner, and were almost hit on the break by Espanyol. But with 3 minutes remaining, a massive scramble in the box from a corner was eventually turned in by Joao Cancelo for his 1st goal of the season.

9/4/2017 - La Liga
ATHLETIC BILBAO 1 - 0 VALENCIA

Gutted. We all but hand the title to Madrid in a loss that is truely hard to take considering her dominance. Iker Munian condemned us to defeat with 20 minutes left with an absolute rocket. Strangely, the Spaniard's first goal of the season. Its pretty much out of our hands now & we'll be hoping for a slip up from Madrid.

16/4/2017 - La Liga
VALENCIA 3 - 0 SEVILLA
Alvaro Negredo, Antonio Barragan, Paco Alcacer

Brilliant win to bounce back from our defeat last week. Alvaro Negredo netted against his former club to give us an early lead. Andre Gomes played it to the forward, who lost his marker and fired the ball across goal into the top corner; an absolute brilliant goal. Another former Sevilla player was on the scoresheet before half-time. Antonio Barragan has had the season of his life, and topped it off with a calmly finished goal at the near post. The rout was completed just after half-time. Alvaro Negredo pulled both defenders out of position before slipping the ball to Paco Alcacer, who found the net with ease, sending the keeper the wrong way.

22/4/2017 - La Liga

LAS PALMAS 0 - 3 VALENCIA
Youri Tielemans, Santi Mina, Adrien Rabiot

We were missing a few players due to travelling back from the international break, but the rotated side we put out more than impressed. Young Belgian midfielder Youri Tielemans hit his 2nd of the season, cooly finishing after Santi Mina let the ball run to him in the box. Santi Mina then got on the scoresheet himself, winning the ball from a poor pass back & passing into the near post. Las Palmas pushed to get back into the game, but we finished them off when Alvaro Negredo crossed the ball to the edge of the box, where Adrien Rabiot fired on the volley into the top corner; a brilliant first league goal.

29/4/2017 - La Liga
REAL BETIS 1 - 0 VALENCIA

Real Madrid are champions. Absolutely no coming back now, which is devastating. Just like the Bilbao game we were the better side, but couldn't find a break through. Vincenzo Rennella netted the only goal past David Ospina to seal our fate.

View attachment 192444

Real Madrid are champions. Gutted doesn't cover it, but I am still delighted at our challenge this year. With the right signings and if we can keep hold of our top stars, I think we can really challenge!

FINAL DAYS

View attachment 192313

Valencia wrapped up a fantastic season with just two final games in May. With 2nd place confirmed, and a spot in the Champion's League, it was just a matter of seeing out the season in style to thank the fans.

6/5/17 - La Liga
VALENCIA 4 - 0 CELTA VIGO
Andre Gomes, Youri Tielemans, Marko Marin, Aymen Abdennour

Big win in the penultimate game of the season. Antonio Barragan does what he has done all season, finding acres of space for a cross which made its way through the box to Andre Gomes who tapped in. There was more brilliant play just two minutes later for the 2nd goal. Barragan crossed for Alcacer who hit the post. Amongst the scramble, Barbosa was able to win the ball and cut it back to the edge of the box, with Youri Tielemans volleying back across goal; a brilliant goal for the Belgian. Barragan claimed possibly his best assist of the season in the 2nd half, with a beautiful cushioned, volleyed pass for Marko Marin who fired across goal. We completed the rout when Aymen Abdennour tapped in after Santi Mina hit the post.

21/5/17 - La Liga
VALENCIA 3 - 2 EIBAR
Gabriel Barbosa (2), Andre Gomes

Shaky finish to the season, but we got it done in the end. Great build-up play for the first goal as Barragan finds Gabriel Barbosa on the edge of the box, and the young Brazilian fires into the top corner. Andre Gomes doubled the lead before the 25th minute, breaking the offside trap to head in a cross from Antonio Barragan. Eibar pulled one back before half time when Ander Capa scored the most bizarre goal of the season. His long ball forward somehow found its way over David Ospina and into the net from over 40 yards. We regained our 2-goal lead through Gabriel Barbosa, who tapped in his 21st of the season on 68 minutes. Eibar continued to press, and grabbed a second goal when a cross deflected its way through the box, and was fired in by Takashi Inui.

LEAGUE TABLE

View attachment 192307

Fabulous season for us as we developed a title challenge right to the very end. Barcelona really fell off the boil after their defeat to us, losing 11 games in total, 8 of those coming after losing to us. Osasuna suffered final day heartache as they were relegated. Finally, despite finding themselves 16th and managerless in November, Atletico Madrid managed to turn their season around and finish a respectable 5th!

PLAYER STATS

View attachment 192306View attachment 192305

We finish the season with the 2nd & 4th highest goalscorers! It just shows how amazing they were all season. Cristiano Ronaldo ran away with the award in the second half of the season, after an injury to Luis Suarez halted his progress. In the assist charts, Antonio Barragan stormed the way with a whopping 15 assists from Right-back. A truely remarkable achievement.

View attachment 192304

We took a clean sweep of the 'Young Player of the Year' award. Gabriel Barbosa got some recognition for his incredible season. Jose Gaya & Youri Tielemans finished in 2nd & 3rd, both players also enjoying sensational seasons.

AROUND EUROPE

View attachment 192303View attachment 192302

Chelsea captured their 2nd Champion's League title by defeating Manchester City in the first all English final since 2008. Ronald Koeman led Southampton to their first ever European trophy, taking out big-guns Paris St Germain & Monaco along the way!

In the domestic leagues, Bayern Munich won their 5th Bundesliga title in a row. Chelsea retained the Premier League, edging out Manchester City on the final day of the season. Juventus and PSG both continued their dominance in Italy & France respectively, while Benfica & Ajax also retained their crowns.

WORLD CUP

View attachment 192301
After years of protesting, and years of investigation, FIFA have finally announced that the World Cup in 2022 will not take place in Qatar, and will instead be hosted in China.

NEW MANAGER

Jordi Roura stepped down from his interim role as Barcelona manager at the end of the season, and was replaced by a very strange choice ......

DAVID MOYES!
The former Everton & Manchester United manager led Swansea to their highest ever finish of 7th place, and will make his return to Spanish football with the Catalan giants.

TRANSFERS OUT

Despite our fantastic season, Valencia found themselves a little tight financially. A budget off just £25m was assigned, and in modern football, that is nowhere near enough to strengthen, especially with the Champion's League on the horizon.

We were unable to work out a deal with Paris St Germain for midfielder Adrien Rabiot. The youngster had a fantastic loan spell, but when we enquired, PSG set an asking price of £125m! An absolutely obsurd price for any player. The other loanee leaving the club was Marko Marin. The midfielder was good when he played, but we had better targets in mind in his position. The German's contract expired with Chelsea and he signed a deal with Italian side Verona.

View attachment 192298

The biggest transfer out of the club was experienced striker Alvaro Negredo. He was offered to several clubs in an attempt to deter bids for his fellow strikers, and this led to a big fall out with Thierry Henry. The striker was quickly transfer-listed, and within days, an £11m deal was agreed with Napoli. After 42 goals in 108 appearances, the fans were quite angry to see him leave, but Thierry Henry assured them that things would work out for the club, and that the deal was best for all parties.

View attachment 192297

Another striker was shown the door, as Rodrigo joined Everton in a £4.8m deal. The striker fell down the pecking order at Valencia, and despite 11 goals last season, he struggled for a place in the starting line-up, and requested to be transferred in the summer.

View attachment 192296

Another player who requested a transfer was Hugo Mallo. He signed from PSG in a cut-price deal last summer, but struggled to make an impact with the incredible form of Antonio Barragan & Joao Cancelo leaving him out of the squad for most of the season. The right-back followed Rodrigo to Merseyside, but will line-up against him in a Liverpool shirt this season. He joins in a deal worth £3.9m, a slight profit on what we paid last season.

The rest of the business done saw several young players, who failed to break into the team, leave the club. Center-back Ruben Vezo joined Monaco in a £2.9m switch. Robert & Salva Ruiz moved to Krasnodar & Tenerife respectively in deals worth just under £2m each. Finally, 33 year old midfielder Javi Fuego ended his 4 year tenure at the Mestalla with a free transfer to Espanyol.

TRANSFER RUMOURS

View attachment 192292

After his sensational season, it was inevitable that Gabriel Barbosa would be attracting interest from some of the top clubs in Europe. Valencia have already knocked back several bids from all 5 clubs shown, but some media outlets are suggesting that one club may look to win the race for his signature by activating his £57m release clause.

"Of course we want to keep him. He is one of our best players and I feel he can become the core of this side this season. But if someone does match his release clause, we become powerless. We can just hope Gabriel is loyal to us." - Thierry Henry.

Other reports are suggesting that the Valencia management are looking into a possible contract extension for the 20 year old. Any contract offered would of course remove, or increase the release clause in the players contract. However there is some reluctance, due to the player only recently signing an extension back in January.

TRANSFERS IN

With all our transfers out, we managed to pull in £25m to double our transfer budget. We pursued some early targets, but were unable to make any progress. As noted, we were amazingly priced out of a bid for Adrien Rabiot, and AC Milan were reluctant to sell promising goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma.

View attachment 192283

Young talents were clearly a priority, and Thierry Henry captured his first, diving into his former club Arsenal's academy with the signing of Ainsley Maitland-Niles. The 19 year old impressed on-loan at Fulham last season, which caught the eye of the Henry. A massive £10.5m fee was agreed with the Gunners for the England U21 international. The youngster is very versatile, and can fit in either on the right-wing or through the middle.

View attachment 192282

Another versatile player was next through the door, but this player brings in much more experience. Norwegian international Havard Nordveit ends a 7 year affiliation with Borussia Monchengladbach with a £2.9m switch to La Liga. At 27, Havard is entering his peak years, and we will be hoping he can be a very useful signing. His ability to fit in either at the back or in center midfield makes him a valuable commodity.

View attachment 192281

Another winger came in next, suggesting that Valencia manager Thierry Henry may be toying about with new tactics this year. Ugandan born Danish International Pione Sisto came in from FC Midtjylland for just £6m. The 22 year old possess incredible amounts of speed & flair, and it already being touted as one of the players to watch this season.

View attachment 192280

Speedy forward Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang had a season to forget last year. A cruciate ligament injury kept him out until March, and he failed to break back into the side. The Gabonese striker requested a transfer after being knocked down the pecking order at Borussia Dortmund, and Valencia completed the deal within days, with a bargain £11m fee being paid.

View attachment 192279

Another highly rated youngster joined the club. Benfica were unwilling to sell 19 year old Renato Sanches, but were able to agree to a loan deal. The attacking-midfielder was linked with the likes of Arsenal & Chelsea, but opted for a switch to La Liga. Thierry Henry later confirmed that he agreed a price of £20m with Benfica to make the deal permanent at the end of the season.

View attachment 192278

Despite some serious adjusting of the budget, Thierry Henry admitted that he could never pass on the opportunity to sign a player of Yannick Ferreira Carrasco's quality. Valencia missed out on the Belgian international in January when he signed for Manchester City for £17m. However, he made just 3 appearances in the Premier League, and was not shy at voicing his concerns. He was not guarenteed first team football, and returns to La Liga in a £14m deal!

View attachment 192276

"I think Valencia have done some incredible business again this season. Some very exciting players, and I think Henry has done brilliantly to once again keep a hold of his key players. I see no reason why they can't challenge for the title this year." - Guillem Balague

BARBOSA ON THE MOVE?

View attachment 192275

Speculation continues to mount over the future of Gabriel Barbosa. The 20 year old has been a subject of an extreme bidding war between Europe's elite and it would appear that the war is soon to be over. Borussia Dortmund have activated a £57m release clause in the Brazilian's contract!

NEW TEAM, OLD TRICKS

View attachment 192232

With all the spotlight on the 6 new signings who debuted for Valencia in the opening two fixtures, it was the old guard that stood out. Fans will be pleased to see the team gelling so quickly as they look to build on last seasons title challenge.

20/8/17 - La Liga
ZARAGOZA 0 - 2 VALENCIA
Paco Alcacer, Andre Gomes

New players, New formation, Old outcome. Antonio Barragan continued his scintillating form into the new season by setting up two second half goals that gave us the win over newly-promoted Zaragoza. The right-back linked up well with new signing Pione Sisto and managed to cross for Paco Alcacer to volley in after making a run from deep. 8 minutes later, and it was the same combo that allowed Barragan to cross, this time to the near post where Andre Gomes nodded into the near post.

BARBOSA SIGNS FOR.....

View attachment 1007159

Gabriel Barbosa has ended the summer long transfer saga by signing a contract ....... with Valencia! The Brazilian rejected a move to Borussia Dortmund and signed a huge £150k a week, 5 year deal at the Mestalla. The club also confirmed on their website that a release clause of £100m has been agreed in the contract.
27/8/17 - La Liga
VALENCIA 2 - 0 CELTA VIGO
Gabriel Barbosa, Aymen Abdennour

1 minute, 23 seconds. Thats how long it took for Gabriel Barbosa to put a real end to the transfer saga. The Brazilian firmly half-volleyed in after Aubameyang headed down a Maitland-Niles cross, giving Valencia a very early lead. The striker showed his true passion for the club, kissing the badge and embracing the roars of the crowd. Aymen Abdennour doubled the lead before half time when he got on the end of Neven Subotic's goalward header to beat the keeper. We fell slightly flat in the second half, but we can hopefully attribute that to a lack of game time. Nevertheless, another comfortable win to start the season.

CHAMPIONS LEAGUE

The draw for the Champions League was made, with some juicy ties being set up. Dortmund vs Madrid / Barca vs Juve & Man U vs PSG makes for some great entertainment for the neutrals. Valencia fans will be praising their luck as the draw was made for the Group stage.

WORLD TRANSFER ROUND-UP

Another bizarre summer of transfers, with money being thrown around like it was nothing, and a couple players returning to clubs.

View attachment 192223

Memphis Depay transfered to Juventus from Manchester United last season after an alleged bust-up with new boss Diego Simeone. However, that theory was proved false when the Dutch winger returned to the Red Devils after just a year. A massive £51m was shelled out by Manchester United, although several fans were not happy that the club ended up taking close to a £15m hit on the Depay transfer saga. 7 goals in his first 6 games has shown that Memphis has matured greatly, and is ready to prove the doubters wrong.

View attachment 192209View attachment 192213

Alvaro Morata returned to Real Madrid an impressed last season with 15 goals in all competitions. However, with the £46m signing of Monaco striker Manolo Gabbiadini, Morata found himself on tehe way out of the Bernabau again..... with Juventus the destination once again. A £30m deal was agreed on deadline day in another bizarre transfer twist.

View attachment 192208View attachment 192196

Real Madrid continued to bolster their attacking options as they look to defend their La Liga title. Another deadline day deal was struck, for Dynamo Kiev winger Andriy Yarmolenko to join the club in a massive £36m switch! The Ukranian joins Carlos Mane, Nicholas Nkoulou and more at the Spanish champions. Barcelona also strengthened their attacking options with the £33m signing of Wolfsburg midfielder Julian Draxler.

View attachment 192206View attachment 192205View attachment 192203View attachment 192201

2017 saw some of the hottest young talents in Europe making massive moves. After failing in signing Gabriel Barbosa, Borussia Dortmund turned their attention to Mauro Icardi, who they signed from Inter Milan for £41m! Spanish attacking midfielder Koke made a massive move to the Premiership, bolstering Manchester City's title hopes for a massive £35.5m.

Ayoze Perez was the man in-form last season, netting 32 goals in all competitions for Newcastle, and setting up a furthur 16. The Spaniard looked to push his way back into the National side with a £40m move to PSG, and has impressed with 2 goals & 2 assists in his opening 4 games. Finally, Romelu Lukaku made the switch from Everton to Manchester United in a big £36m deal. 6 goals in 5 games is a great start for the Belgian, who proves to be a massive signing for the Red Devils.

Elsewhere, Swansea & Southampton both broke their club record transfer deals this summer. New Swansea boss Andre Villas-Boas introduced himself to the club with the signing of Anthony Martial from Manchester United for £22.5m. Southampton strengthend their squad for the Champions League, signing former Chelsea star Andre Schurrle from Wolfsburg for £26m.
