Waking The Fallen Giant: Deportivo La Coruna

The early 00's a club I seen actively in Europe had some decent players, always in or around the Champions League places, but in recent times, 2010 to 2014 was a yo-yo for the club, relegation - promotion - relegation - promotion in four seasons, now since 2014/2015 season been an just above the relegation zone finish for 3 years. I see the club as a good challenge to get them back to where they were back in the early 00's.

Manager

I'm from Bristol, England, no knowledge of any Spanish, hola is about it. I put myself on the max reputation and coaching badges, to keep the players calm before the storm.

Club Rivals

Celta Vigo which is the local rival at just over 100 miles between the two clubs, they are my first aim to beat.

Valencia is a competitive rival not sure why, but hey Football Manager calls them a rival, they're a rival.

Tactic

View attachment 1141350View attachment 1141351

I'm going to use a bog standard 4-4-2 for the club, not sure why I'm doing it, but you don't see many 4-4-2 about nowadays.

Key Players

View attachment 1141353
Florin Andone

The Romanian striker will be a key player when it comes to scoring goals alongside a loaned player.

View attachment 1141354
Lucas Pérez Martínez

On loan from Arsenal in England, for a season long loan, which would give one Andone a good strike partner and two a season to find a replacement for when his loan finishes.

View attachment 1141355
Sidnei Rechel da Silva Júnior

Sidnei for short is the no-nonsense CB the club needs to build on from the defense.

First update will be preseason and the first two games of the La Liga season which ain't fun and games being Atletico Madrid and Barcelona.

Transfers

View attachment 1141395

Walter Gonzalez is the only transfer I brought in the Paraguayan striker comes in for 850k, he's a decent backup, can become Andone partner next season.

Results

Couple of good wins in friendlies, a narrow defeat to Atletico Madrid, but a surprising draw against Barcelona is a good August in La Liga.

League Table

View attachment 1141396

12th after 2 games is good, roll on September with 4 games in La Liga, surely the only way is up, if it down the table, I'll be in trouble.

September Fixtures

View attachment 1141397

We have Girona which is could be winable, same with Alaves, but Villarreal and Sevilla would be the more challenging games in September.

Player of the preseason/start of season

Florin Andone

View attachment 1141401

The striker stood out by scoring a brace in the defeat to Atlectio Madrid.

Next update is September.

SEPTEMBER 2017

View attachment 1141606 vs View attachment 1141605
Deportivo 3 - Zakaria Bakkali (49th), Lucas (pen 66th) and Walter Gonzalez (88th)
Girona 0

A great start for Deportivo La Coruna for September, 3-0 win against Girona is just what the club needed from that defeat to Atletico Madrid and the draw with Barcelona.

View attachment 1141607 vs View attachment 1141606
Alaves 1 - Ruben Sobrino (77th)
Deportivo 3 - Lucas (31st, 37th) and Celso Borges (78th)

Just like London buses 2 wins in a row, the team starting to gel together, getting used to the tactic.

View attachment 1141606 vs View attachment 1141608
Deportivo 2 - Lucas (15th, 45th)
Villarreal 5 - Carlos Bacca (28th, 62nd, 81st, pen 85th) and Nicola Sansone (59th)

Ouch, looks like we found our kryptonite in Carlos Bacca, a very poor result but the players are keeping their heads held high.

View attachment 1141609 vs View attachment 1141606
Sevilla 2 - Pablo Sarabia (26th) and Ganso (93rd)
Deportivo 2 - Lucas (44th, 61st)

Better than that monster performance against Villarreal, a good 2-2 draw against a very strong Sevilla side, could have had the match won but Ganso had other things on his mind.

League table.

Sitting in the same place as last month, 12th, just above the mighty Barcelona, but only on better goal difference.

Player of the month
Lucas Perez
View attachment 1141611

Main goalscorer for the club in September, hope for more goals in October.

Above Barcelona - you would take that at the end of the season!!

Getafe 3 - Amath N'Diaye (11th), Pedro Mosquera own goal (82nd) and Dani Pacheco (85th)
Deportivo 2 - Lucas (6th) and Fede Cartabia (71st)

A thought of an easy game to win, ends up being the sharp side not the blunt side of a double-sided sword against Getafe.

View attachment 71386 vs View attachment 71385
Real Sociedad 1 - Juanmi (81st)
Deportivo 2 - Lucas (42nd and 67th)

That was a better showing from the players, Lucas is on fire.

View attachment 71385 vs View attachment 71383
Deportivo 2 - Lucas (60th) and Fede Cartabia (80th)
Levante 2 - Jose Morales (58th) and Chema (66th)

Good draw against Levante, at least it's not a defeat to a beatable team.

View attachment 71382 vs View attachment 71385
Spanish Cup 4th Round Leg 1
Girona 0
Deportivo 1 - Florin Andone (77th)

Can't give much of a note, it's only the first leg, still got the second leg to do, but one away goal can't do much.

View attachment 71385 vs View attachment 71379
Deportivo 2 - Lucas (2nd and 73rd)
Real Madrid 1 - Sergio Ramos (86th)

Just wow, victory against Real Madrid, kept both Ronaldo and Bale quiet.

League table.

9th in the league now, 1 point ahead of Barcelona, 3 behind Real Madrid and 1 ahead of main rival Celta Vigo, can I play a full team of Lucas.

Player of the month
Lucas Perez

Could have given it to Goalkeeper Francis Uzoho but with more goals in October from Lucas Perez got the nod, but who will step up now after Lucas Perez getting injured against Real Madrid and out for 3 months.

Espanyol 4 - Gerard Moreno (pen 54th, 80th), Sergio Garcia (71st) and Boschilia (87th)
Deportivo 1 - Florin Andone (15th)

Ouch, what did the team do at halftime, forgot how to play football I guess.

vs
52265.png

Deportivo 1 - Alejandro Arribas (29th)
Real Betis 4 - Joaquin (8th), Ryad Boudebouz (38th) and Jon Bautista (44th and 81st)

Poor, just poor, need Lucas Perez back but can't until February, plus Florin Andone is out for 3 months with a torn hamstring.

59044.png
vs
89727.png

Deportivo 1 - Celso Borges (57th)
Eibar 0

Moved one of the strikers into the AMC with Advanced Playmaker with support role for this match might continue with it, well I do have both Lucas Perez and Florin Andone out for 3 months.

Spanish Cup 4th Round Leg 2
Deportivo 2 - Emre Colak (pen 19th and pen 21st)
Girona 2 - Marlos Moreno (38th) and Borja Garcia (62nd)

2-2 draw, along with a 1-0 win in the first leg, puts us into the 5th round.

League table.

Dropped to 11th, Barcelona has moved above us, but we are still ahead of Celta Vigo which is good.

In the very mixed month, center back Alejandro Arribas stood out of the squad from his impressive defense work during the month, even them two 4-1 defeats.

Celta Vigo 3 - Pablo Hernandez (4th), Jozabed (13th) and Nemanja Radoja (85th)

Not good against the 100 miles local rival, really missing Lucas Perez and Florin Andone.

Deportivo 3 - Pedro Mosquera (45th+1), Walter Gonzalez (48th) and Guilherme (90th+3)

Good draw against Valencia the competitive rival, hope this new form from the past 2 games continues.

13th, at least it's not 20th or 19th or 18th, but we are now behind Celta Vigo. Lucas Perez and Florin Andone is back next month so up got to be the goal for January.

The striker had to fill big shoes, beginning of the month, not good but kicked on from getting the goals against Leganes.

Poor but I think the club can leave the cup alone and focus on the league.

Malaga 1 - Paul Baysse (5th)
Deportivo 3 - Celso Borges (41st) and Lucas Perez (49th and 90th+5)

A good win over a team in the top four in the league, thanks for Lucas Perez coming back from injury and the sub bench to score the 2 goals.

Spanish Cup 5th Round Leg 2
Real Betis 2 - Jon Bautista (39th) and Ryad Boudebouz (pen 62nd)

Played a weaker side because of Barcelona in the league next, and why waste time on the cup.

A special post, about youth intake. Since I forgot to put it in March update.

I got 4 players who got a chance at being good, first let's look at the 2 players who can be good squad depth players in the future, if not good first teamer for Coruna B.

Callum Vetere

Englishman Callum Vetere is an AMC but can also play as a center midfielder or a striker.

Jose Maria

One player is a potential good squad depth in his position.

Finally the club star man in terms of youth potential a future star for sure.

Dani Escribano

Spanish Dani Escribano is the standout player in the youth intake, the striker has got very good potential, I feel it be best to have him in and around the first team squad.
