and noticed lots of players that end up being pretty good all have a PA of -9, but Messi has a PA of like 198 and obviously he is a beast, just wondering what the -9 thing is about

-9 is his potential ability, I think it is a number between 150-200 or something like that and is randomly assigned at the start of a game

The -# ones you see are for people without a fixed PA.
They're a range of 20 I believe, -10 180-200, -9 160-180 etc.

Basically a negative PA is assigned to a young player who hasn't done enough to be given a precise fixed PA. -10 means the player will be given a fixed PA between 170 and 200 when your game is first started, -9 means 150 to 180, -8 is 130 to 160 and so on.

Also if I am creating a player, do I need to set his attributes, or will the CA setting take care of them?

Could I edit some and leave some at 0 so they are random?

Yeah but be prepared, they will be random. You might have the best technical player in the world with the pace of a dead gazelle. Or in the extremis, Theo Walcott. XD

So say I create a player with CA 160 and PA 185, how can I be sure the stats I preset for him wont be too much for his CA?

I'm not too sure, maybe his stats will degrade rapidly in game or maybe he will play below bar. I think the most likely is that the game will put the stats down to match CA 160 tbh.

The latter is correct.
