I wanted to try writing a story from a different angle. It seems that all the stories on this website are written from a first person perspective. I know some have incorporated the use of 'news articles' but I wanted to write a story that was strictly from a media perspective looking in.

So this entire story will be made up of internet based media. National and local news websites, club website posts etc.... The story will incorporate screenshots from the game, but the main body of writing will be in the form of articles. The idea is to mimic how most people follow their club in real life, keeping an eye on their club's website and following websites like SkySports and BBC to see the latest from our favourite clubs.

I won't be boring you with a match report from every single game I play, but will instead write an update every few games as and when I feel the time is right to provide one. Probably looking at every 3-6 games I would imagine.

And we will be following the career of Chris Ball, who begins his journey at Welling Utd in the Vanarama National South. I hope you all enjoy this different take on a football manager story.

Welling Hire Ball As Manager

View attachment 66643

Welling Utd today announced Chris Ball as their new manager, ahead of the 2017/18 football season.

Ball, 32, is said to be delighted to have been offered his first managerial role in football since retiring as a professional footballer last year. Having made a name for himself playing most of his career in the lower leagues of English football, Ball retired early to focus on a career in the managerial side of the game and is a welcome appointment for Wings fans who hope he can bring a new level of success to the club.

Welling have suffered a couple of poor seasons, having finished rock bottom of the National League two seasons ago. Last season, many expected the club to make a challenge for immediate promotion back to the National League, but they only managed a disappointing 16th placed finish.

The Kent club will certainly be hoping the appointment of Ball will be the catalyst to fire the club into promotion contention this season. It remains to be seen how Ball will cope with the expectations that have fallen upon his broad shoulders.

Ball To Evaluate Squad

Ball To Give Everyone A Chance

Chris Ball has given his first public address to Wings fans since taking over, saying that he intends to use the pre season campaign to take a look at his players.

Ball didn't shy away from the fact he knows very little about his current squad and will need to use the pre season campaign to take a look at each and every one of them, stating that everyone will get a chance to prove their worthy of a being here. It is likely that Ball will be looking to rotate his current crop of players in order to decide on his starting 11 for the opening game of the season against Hampton & Richmond Borough.

Ball was asked about his preferred formation and the style of play he will be looking to bring to Park View Road, to which he stated that he prefers an attacking style of play but appreciates that if we neglect our defensive responsibilities, we will not be competing at the right end of the table this year. Ball also mentioned that he has a couple of formations he likes, but he won't force the players to play in positions and roles unfamiliar to them. Instead he'll look at who he has available and adapt a formation to suit. "I'll probably decide who my key 3 or 4 players are and adapt the rest of the team around them", he said.

When asked who he felt his best players were, Ball kept his cards close to his chest, although he was noted as saying "Tom Richards is an exciting wide player". However, Ball did also make it clear that he would be looking to add to the squad before the season kicks off, so we'll wait with plenty of anticipation to see who the new manager brings in.

Ball Brings In New Staff

New manager Chris Ball has wasted no time in adding to his backroom team here at Welling.

Only 2 weeks into his reign as manager and he has already added no less than 6 new members to his backroom staff.

Jack Edge was the first addition, joining the club as a Fitness Coach. Edge was unattached, but has previous experience coaching at both Bournemouth and Forest Green Rovers.

He was quickly followed by Head of Youth Development Taylor Pearce who takes up his first coaching role in football.

Peter Mead joins the club as Scout, having formerly been employed by Crystal Palace and he is joined on the scouting team by Chief Data Analyst, James Turner, who's previous employment was with the Welsh national side.

Finally, Ball has made improvements to the medical team, bringing in John Hayes and Becky Knight as Head Physio and Physio. They were previously employed by Portsmouth and Notts County respectively.

Ball went on record saying "If we are going to achieve our goals at this club, it's important we have everything in place to do so. With the right team behind me, I'm confident we can look after and get the best out of each and every player here".

Nelson Signs For Welling

First Signing For Ball

rsz_mitchell_nelson-200x300.jpg

Chris Ball confirmed his first signing for the club since taking over and it will be a familiar name for Wings fans as Mitchell Nelson rejoins the club.

Nelson has been brought back to Welling, having been released at the end of last season after making 14 appearances for the club.

Nelson is a right back with good tackling ability and is renowned for his determined attitude and high work rate. At 27 years old, the English full back will be looking to repay the faith shown in him by Ball after he has given him another shot at the club.

"We were really struggling for numbers in the full back positions with no out and out right back in the squad. I think Nelson has plenty to offer in this role and I hope the fans will be pleased to see him back in a Welling United shirt this season", said Ball.

Pre Season

1146973d1518353587-well-son-welling-welling-website-banner.jpg

"Pre Season Went To Plan", Says The Gaffer

Welling's pre season came to an end today with a 2-0 defeat at home to Charlton and manager Chris Ball says the campaign has gone to plan.

We have played six friendlies in preparation for the new season, recording 4 wins and 2 losses and the gaffer is pleased with how things have gone.

The club have recorded wins against local opposition in Hastings, Thamesmead, Dagenham & Redbridge and Tonbridge Angels, scoring a total of 11 goals in those four fixtures, only conceding 1 goal against Thamesmead.

The two losses came against opposition from higher up the English leagues in Sheffield Utd and Charlton.

Chris Ball said "We have played some good stuff across these six games and I've had the opportunity to have a look at all the players over the last few weeks. We beat all the teams we were expected to beat and turned in good performances against Sheffield Utd and Charlton too. I've had a chance to tinker with some different formations and it's given me a good idea about how we might lineup against Hampton & Richmond Borough next week".

Ball went on to single out central midfielder Olumide Durojaiye and striker Flo Bojaj as his star performers, but said he was pleased with the level of commitment from all of his players.

Three New Signings

View attachment 66354

Welling Sign Up Pre Season Trialists

Welling boss Chris Ball has offered contracts to three trialists that have been with the club through their pre season campaign.

Jordan Adekunle, Charlie Morris and Kyle Clinton all found themselves without a club at the end of last year's campaign and Ball was quick to offer all three trials with Welling since taking over as manager in July. All three players featured in Welling's pre season campaign and have done enough to convince Ball to add them to his squad for the upcoming season.

21 year old winger, Adekunle has been knocking around the lower leagues of England for the likes of Farnborough and Fisher, although he has only managed 1 senior appearance in his career to date. He has electric pace and Ball will be hoping he can wreak havoc for opposition defenders from the left side.

19 year old Charlie Morris is another player that has come through the lower league sides, his most recent spell being with Redditch United in the Calor Gas League Premier Division. A central midfielder with good passing ability, he is sure to provide cover in the centre of the park.

Centre back Kyle Clinton has the best pedigree of the three players, having come through the Southampton youth system. Having spent 3 years with the Saints, Clinton was released and will now be looking to make a name for himself with The Wings.

When asked about his new additions, Ball replied "We have three young players here with their whole careers ahead of them and plenty to prove. All three lads did well in our pre season friendlies and showed me they are worthy of a shot. I'm excited about what they can bring to the team and am confident they can all be a success here".

Opening Day Defeat For Welling

View attachment 66330

Welling boss, Chris Ball, took charge of his first competitive game as the Vanrama National League South kicked off today. The fixture, a home game against Hampton & Richmond Borough.

As the game kicked off, the anticipation amongst the Wings fans was clear to see as they waited to see what their new manager had to offer. Welling lined up with an attacking 4-4-2 formation and it didn't take them long to create their first good chance of the game. On 10 minutes, left winger Tom Richards cut in from the wing, beat the Borough full back and the space opened up in front of him. He forged on toward goal but a lack of composure showed as he wasted the chance, shooting from the edge of the area when he could have probably gone closer.

It was Hampton & Richmond that scored the first goal of the game, taking the lead on 17 minutes with a low effort from just inside the box from Harry Crawford finding the bottom corner of the net.

Borough were certainly enjoying most of the possession, but it was Welling who struck next, equalizing on 33 minutes. Tom Richards crossed from the left wing, Moli got up to head down to the feet of Durojaiye who fired home to make it 1-1. A well worked goal from the Wings.

It wasn't long though before Borough were back in front as they restored their lead only 5 minutes later with a close range effort from midfielder Gary Jones, after a knock down from Ryan Ferguson.

The second half was uneventful as Borough looked content to sit on their 2-1 lead and Welling struggled to break down the 5 man defence of their opponents. A couple of long range efforts were the closes the wings came to drawing level, as Chris Ball fell to defeat in his first competitive game in charge.

Lineup: Perntreou, Nelson, Gayle, Parkinson, Jefford, Joseph-Dubois, Healy, Durojaiye, Richards (Adekunle 62), Moli (Goldberg 80), Bojaj

Attendance: 615 (89 away)

Braintree Away

Welling Rue Missed Chances

View attachment 66326

Following the opening day defeat against Hampton & Richmond Borough, Welling boss Chris Ball decided on a different formation for the away trip to Braintree, opting for a 5-4-1 system utilising 3 centre backs, wing backs and advanced wingers.

Welling made a fast and furious start to the game and created a fantastic early chance inside 5 minutes. Bojaj found himself open and only 3 yards from goal, but could only fire a powerful effort straight at the Braintree goalkeeper.

The wings had come out with a point to prove and had another clear chance on 7 minutes, this time Jordan Adekunle squandering an opportunity from 7 yards on his first start for the club.

Welling had dominated proceeding for the opening half hour and nearly took the lead on 33 minutes when Durojaiye played a perfect through ball to Bojaj who shot at goal, forcing a good save from McDonald in the Braintree goal.

Bojaj was then presented with another clear opportunity as he found himself one on one with McDonald at the end of the first half. His shot flew past the Braintree keeper only to hit the side netting and the striker clearly looked dejected at the end of a half where he could have had a hat trick.

Braintree offered more in the second half, having been dominated in the opening 45 minutes, but the best chances again fell to Welling. Durijaiye and Healy missing the best opportunities to give the wings the lead.

The game filtered out into a 0-0 draw and Welling will certainly look back on this game as a missed opportunity for 3 points as they struggled in front of goal and missed a number of golden opportunities against a Braintree side that offered very little.

Lineup: Perntreou, Nelson, Gayle, Parkinson, Dymond, Richards, Joseph-Dubois (Nanetti 68), Adekunle, Healy, Durojaiye (Jebb 87), Bojaj (Moli 68)

Attendance: 717 (53 away)

Three Wins For Welling

View attachment 66285

Three Straight Wins For Welling

Following Welling's slow start to the campaign, Chris Ball's men have now strung together three straight 3-0 victories to move them up to 5th in the Vanarama National League South table. It was a slow start to life at Welling for Chris Ball, but with the club's form taking a dramatic turn for the better over the past three games, things are looking up for Wings fans.

View attachment 66284

Welling's third game of the season saw them back at home against East Thurrock United in a game they were heavy favourites to win. Welling took the lead inside 5 minutes when striker David Moli slotted home from close range on his first start of the season. And the wings found themselves 2-0 up within only 10 minutes after a cross had been punched out by Thurrock keeper Lidakevicius directly to Jordan Adekunle who volleyed home from just inside the box to score his first senior goal of his career.

Thurrock missed a golden opportunity to get themselves back in the game as they missed a penalty right at the end of the first half, as Lewis Smith fired straight at Welling keeper Perntreou. Welling wrapped up all 3 points and their first win of the season in the 84th minute with a headed effort from midfielder Jack Jebb.

View attachment 66283

Welling followed up their first win of the season against East Thurrock with another home game against Poole Town, who had also kicked off their season with 1 win, 1 draw and 1 loss. Ball stuck with the same starting lineup from the previous game against a surprisingly attacking setup from Poole.

David Moli started brightly up front for the wings and saw a strong header saved excellently by the Poole Town goalkeeper early in the game. 25 minutes in and it was Matthew Neale who then found himself with the best opportunity of the game so far as he found himself open in the Welling box, but his close range effort was saved by the Welling keeper who did well to make himself big and close down the shot. Poole were made to rue the missed opportunity as Welling capitalised on a free kick only minutes later. Richards crossed in to the feet of Kyle Clinton, who controlled the ball well inside the box, before setting up fellow centre back Jack Parkinson to slot home from 4 yards out.

Welling then doubled their lead right on the stroke of half time as Joseph-Dubois ran into the Poole box and passed the ball across the face of the goal for an onrushing Adekunle to score his 2nd goal in 2 games. Poole started the 2nd half brightly and Warren Bentley missed a glorious chance to get them back into the game when his shot went well wide when one on one with the Welling keeper. It was then Welling who struck again to go 3-0 in front, Moli getting on the end of a Tom Richards cross. Bojaj came off the bench and missed a late chance to make it 4, as Welling went on to record back to back 3-0 home victories and move up to 8th in the table after a slow start.

View attachment 66282

Truro City came into this game with an improving Welling 19th in the table and the relegation candidates were clearly expecting a tough game as they started with a defensive looking lineup. Welling boss Chris Ball stuck with the same formation that had gained his side back to back home victories, with his only change seeing Christian Nanetti make his first start of the season down the right flank.

The first half hour offered little in the way of action, before Welling striker David Moli was fouled jumping for the ball inside the Truro box and the wings were awarded a penalty. Durojaiye stepped up and slotted the penalty away confidently to give Welling the lead. Early in the 2nd half, the wings doubled their lead when Moli latched onto a hopeful long ball from Tom Richards and hit his shot low into the corner of the net. Welling looked full of confidence as they started to pass the ball around nicely, resulting in some nice attacking play.

As Truro looked resigned to defeat, Welling continued to pile on the pressure late into the game and were rewarded with a 3rd goal, through substitute Flo Bojaj with his first goal of the season. This made it three wins in a row for Welling, with four straight clean sheets and it seems new manager Chris Ball is getting to grips with life at the Kent club. In his post match press conference, Ball said "The performances are getting better with every game and I'm pleased we managed to quickly put a couple of bad results behind us".

Welling Draw Romanians In FA Cup

28092972.png

Welling United have been drawn against FC Romania in the 2nd Qualifying Round of this year's FA Cup.

FC Romania are a club founded in 2006 by a group of Romanian workers who decided they'd like to play football in their spare time. Since then, the club has enjoyed some good success in the lower leagues of English football. They now ground share with Ryman League outfit Cheshunt FC in Hertfordshire.

The club is entirely made up of Romanian players and have gained a strong following both locally and abroad in Romania, but their style of play has gained them increasing local English support over the past couple of years.

FC Romania have been drawn as the home side in the tie, which will be played on Saturday 16th September. Welling will likely be heavy favourites to progress in the competition.

Welling Up To Third

Welling Climb Into Top Three

Welling have now recorded seven games unbeaten in the Vanarama National League South, which has seen the Kent side rise to 3rd in the league. Centre midfield partnership Jack Jebb and Olumide Durojaiye have turned in some excellent performances so far this season and have been at the heart of Chris Ball's Welling side who are looking like title challengers even this early in the season.

View attachment 66220

Welling's run of straight victories came to an end with a disappointing draw away at Oxford City. The wings had looked on course to make it 4 wins in a row when they raced into a 2-0 lead inside the opening 30 minutes of the game with goals from David Moli and Jack Jebb. But City fought back bravely in the second half and created a number of chances throughout the second 45 minutes. Their persistance and determination paid off as a fine finish from Eddie Jones saw them get back into the game on 62 minutes.

City continued to throw men forward and Welling were finding it increasingly difficult to defend against the pressing Oxford and the inevitable equalizer came on 77 minutes when Kyle Clinton turned the ball into his own net after Jones had whipped a vicious cross into the Welling box.

Oxford boss, Mark Jones, said "We showed good spirit today against a strong Welling side and fully deserved the point. I felt we could have won the game late on, but I'm proud of the lads for fighting back when we looked dead and buried at half time".

View attachment 66219

Chelmsford City were the pre season favourites to win the title and they were living up to that expectation as they topped the league coming into this game with Welling Utd, having won 5 and drawn 1 of their opening six games. But Chris Ball's Welling side were a team finding some good form of their own and the home side started brightly, with David Moli and Christian Nanetti forcing early saves from Sam Beasant in the Chelmsford goal.

With Welling piling on the early pressure, they came close to opening the scoring on 15 minutes when Jack Parkinson headed against the crossbar from a corner. And only 2 minutes later, the wings were in front as Jordan Adekunle crossed from deep on the left side towards the back post, where Nanetti was waiting to volley a powerful effort into the back of the net. Adekunle continued to wreak havoc down the left side and mid way through the first half,

Welling could probably should have been two in front as he crossed in for David Moli to shoot his effort over the bar from only a couple of yards out. The league leaders had struggled to muster up anything in the opening 45 minutes and will have been grateful to go into the break only one goal down.

Welling picked up where they'd left off in the second half, with a well worked attacking move ending with Jack Jebb striking against the crossbar with a curling shot from just inside the 18 yard box. Chelmsford were struggling to create any sort of chance but on the hour mark, Welling goalkeeper Kleton Perntreou almost gifted them an equalizer as he raced out of his area to take control of a long ball over the top, when his first touch let him down and he was tackled by Chelmsford striker Lee Barnard who had an open net gaping as he shot from 30 yards only to see his effort go wide of the post.

Substitute Joe Healy missed a golden opportunity to seal all 3 points for the wings in the latter stages of the game as he found himself through on goal, but with only the keeper to beat he fired over the bar. As Chelmsford threw men forward late on, Welling wide man Nanetti missed a great opportunity in stoppage time to double his tally, but the wings held firm for a solid 1-0 victory and inflicted Chelmsford's first defeat of the season on them.

Welling manager Chris Ball said after the game "We were fantastic today. The whole team worked hard as a team and defensively we were brilliant. With a little more luck we could have scored a couple more goals on the day, but I'm happy to walk away with 3 points against one of the best sides in the league".

View attachment 66218

Welling came into the game with Hungerford Town on a run of six games without loss, making the away side heavy favourites to secure victory at Bulpit Lane. Hungerford were struggling in 18th and hadn't won in six, following their opening day victory against Weston Super Mare. Welling manager Chris Ball stuck with the same lineup that had defeated Chelmsford in midweek and wide man Jordan Adekunle was at the forefront of Welling's early exploits going forward and it only took the 21 year old 3 minutes to get himself on the scoresheet.

Adekunle then turned provider as he crossed for Christian Nanetti to score from 6 yards and the wings were 2-0 up inside the first quarter of an hour. The game had started at a frantic pace with end to end action and only another 3 minutes passed before Hungerford got themselves on the scoresheet when Alex Wall beat two Welling defenders before slotting home a tidy effort into the bottom corner of the Welling goal.

On the half hour mark, Adekunle picked up the ball inside the Hungerford area and shot a powerful effort into the side netting as the Welling fans celebrated thinking the ball had gone in. Welling took a 2-1 lead into half time, and started strongly after the break with both Adekunle and Moli missing good chances from inside the Hungerford box.

On 67 minutes, Hungerford's Nico Cotton had a wonderful opportunity to level the scores as he was wide open in the box, about 5 yards from goal, as the ball was crossed in from the right side. The ball was crossed perfectly onto his head, but his effort sailed over the crossbar....a poor miss.

Ten minutes later it was Welling that missed a great chance to go 3-1 up as David Moli failed to convert when one on one with the Hungerford keeper. But the third goal did eventually come in stoppage time as Welling earned a free kick high up the pitch, it was crossed in and the ball fell at the feet of centre back Kyle Clinton who made no mistake in slotting home and securing another away win for the wings who move to 3rd in the table.

The game between Whitehawk and Welling would see 4th take on 3rd in the table after both sides had made strong starts to the league campaign, having only lost one game each. Whitehawk would have home advantage as Welling made the short trip down the M23 to Brighton, knowing that Whitehawk striker Josh Walker would be the man they would need to stop if they were to get anything out of this game. Walker came into this one in fine form having scored in every single league game this season for the hawks!

It was Whitehawk who started the game brightly and were certainly on top in the early stages, although only managing to carve out a couple of half chances in the opening 20 minutes of the game. But it was Welling who drew first blood as David Moli latched onto a through ball from Jack Jebb before firing a good shot into the back of the net to give the wings a 1-0 lead with their first shot of the game.

Whitehawk continued to dominate possession throughout the first half, but were found wanting in the final third as the Welling defence held firm and their wall of three centre backs seemed to be leaving the hawks attack short of ideas.

Less than a minute into the 2nd half and it was Welling who extended their lead when Moli set up Jack Jebb who had an easy finish from close range to make it 2-0. Jebb was having a stormer in the centre of the park and only a few minutes later he turned provider again as he played an inch perfect pass through the Whitehawk defence for Joseph-Dubois to run on to and slot home for 3-0.

The hawks looked shellshocked and needed something badly to get them back into this game. They got it on 63 minutes when they were awarded a penalty and Michael Cain stepped up to hammer home for 3-1 and give them a glimmer of hope. But the Welling defence were resolute and didn't allow Whitehawk another sniff at goal and it was actually the away side who added a 4th goal in stoppage time when substitute striker Flo Bojaj finished a counter attacking move.

The game ended in an emphatic victory for the wings and this result will have hurt Whitehawk as their fans and players alike won't believe they've lost this by such a wide margin.

Welling Cruise Through To Next Qualifying Round

Whitehawk-report-1024x576.jpg

View attachment 65915

Welling manager Chris Ball took the opportunity to rest a number of first team players for the away game against minnows FC Romania in their 2nd qualifying round of the FA Cup, with Sean Francis, Ian Gayle, Ben Jefford, Charlie Morris, Joe Healy and Flo Bojaj all coming into the starting lineup with an opportunity to impress.

With the high number of changes to the starting lineup, Welling were clearly lacking some cohesion as they dominated the possession in the opening stages of the game but lacked any real conviction going forward.

It seemed to take the National League South side a good 30 minutes to warm into the game and they eventually took the lead on 36 minutes when Flo Bojaj's headed effort found the back of the net after a whipped cross from Joseph-Dubois on the right flank. It was the only meaningful attack from either side in a pretty poor first half.

The wings came out for the second half with more urgency about them and within the opening 10 minutes had already created more than they did in the entire first half. Both Joseph-Dubois and Adekunle missing half chances before Bojaj tucked away his 2nd of the game with another headed effort, this time from a Tom Richards cross.

It should have been three for Welling on 67 minutes when Joe Healy fired directly at goalkeeper Dorel Herea from 4 yards out. But Welling were firmly in control and on 77 minutes the 3rd goal did come, Richards again crossing in for Joseph-Dubois to meet the ball at the back post with a fine volley which rattled the FC Romania net.

The scoreline remained 3-0 and Welling will progress to the 3rd qualifying round with a good win in the end, after a slow start to the game.

During his post match press conference, Chris Ball said he was pleased with the performance of the players who had come into the squad and said that one or two had given him something to ponder for the upcoming league games. "I felt that Charlie Morris bossed the centre of the park and his passing was absolutely delightful" said Ball.

Welling United have been handed a home tie in the FA Cup 3rd qualifying round against Leiston.

The game will be played at Park View Road on Saturday 30th September and the wings are likely to be heavy favourites to progress against the Ryman League Premier Division club.

Leiston overcame Carlton Town in the 2nd qualifying round with 2-0 victory in which striker Sam Ford bagged both goals.
