This is my Football Manager story that I'm glad to present. I'm a portuguese and my favourite football team is Benfica
, but this time I decided to start with West Ham United hoping to do a good job and making the team one of of the top names in the premier league

This is a short resume of the first season because i'm already in 2013/2014, so ill be making resumes of 09/10; 10/11; and 11/12 seasons. In the 12/13 season i'll present the results by month, and the present season i'll be makind the same, but making comments by match.

I hope you like and please comment

2009/2010 Season

Manager: Joao Gomes
Team: West Ham United
Objective: Mid-Table
Final Position: 6th

We ended the Premier League in 6th Position, wich was great, i never expected to qualify for EURO Cup, but i did it and it was a great achievement for the team. In the League and FA Cup i got eliminated both in the 6th round but i didnt mind to much because i wanted to be focused 100% in the League.

I usually lined up in 4-4-2 or 4-5-1 formations and in this 1st season my top players were:

Goalkeeper: Robert Green
Defender: Mathew Upson
Midfielder: Scott Parker
Striker: Carlton Cole (21 goals)

View attachment 83680

With a 0 tranfer budget, i could do no tranfers and sold no one. In January I just signed Wiltord and Viduka but didn't play very much

2010/2011 Season

After a good season, one even better. In this year i started with a 40M budget to spend and i went on "shopping". the
se were my signings for the season:

View attachment 83681

As you can see, i bought 3 player from benfica that would become three valuable players to the team: Oscar Cardozo, Di Maria and David Luiz. Fellaini did a fantastic job as well and James Milner too. Burdisso started as a backup player and made a good season for the team.

Final League Table:

After a fantastic season, allways concentrating in the Premier League, we ended up in
4th, qualifiyng for the Champions League

2010/2011 Best Eleven:

View attachment 83683

This season i would like to single out Oscar Cardozo, who was the Fans Player to, scoring no more than 24 goals, 16 in the league. Diamanti played an important path to the team sucess, scoring 20 goals.

Goalkeeper: Robert Green
Defender: Matheew Upson
Midfielder: Fellaini
Striker: Oscar Cardozo

Nice layout.

Keep up the good work !

can you share the tactics for both seasons by any chance?

2011/2012 Season

After ending up in 4th, we dreamed in playing in the Champions Cup, but there was still a problem to face: beat Valencia in the Qualifying Round. So, first leg of the round: 1-1 in their home, a great result and i waited ansiously for the 2nd leg, that ended in the same result: 1-1. Penalty decision: West Ham wins. I'm sorry that i can't put the printscreens, but it was a **** of a good game. And we were qualified for the Champions!!!

About the transfer market, i started with 44M and ended up with that:

2011/2012 Tranfers

View attachment 83687

Well, the big signings were for sure Welliton and Miguel Veloso. Drenthe came as a rotation player because he was listed for transfer and Boruc came free wich was a great aquisition to the team. Afellay and Srna came in the Bosman and only played in the posterior season.

2011/2012 Champions League Dream!

Well, in our first Champions League appearance, i hoped we could pass the group stage, but ending in 3rd to play for the Euro Cup wasn't bad too. Result: 2nd

View attachment 83691

I had to face Barcelona, two losses almost for sure, so the big decisions were in the genoa and fenerbahçe games. I lost with Barcelona 1 match, but i could win a draw against them at home. The 3 wins (2 Genoa 1 Fenerbahçe) were very important to the qualification.

Next step: First Knockout Round
Opponent: Real Madrid (OMG that was the last i wanted)

In the first leg we loss 4-2 at home ending with my hopes of getting a foot on the quarter finals. In the 2nd Leg, Real Madrid scores at the 2nd minute of the game and I thought i would get out of that game with a goal bonanza by them. NO, we reverted the match, and in a stunning 2nd half: 4-1 !!!! The last goal was scored by James Milner at 92 minute. I couldn't believe it, WE WERE ON THE QUARTER FINALS!

Next step: Quarter Finals
Opponent: Olimpique de Marseille

Well, after eliminating Real Madrid, I could hope anything for this team, the truth is we were going to face a more accomodate side and since we eliminated the great Real Madrid, we could get something of that. 1st Leg: 0-0 no history game, i didnt want to suffer home goals, neither do OM suffer away goals. So, 2nd Leg, we were awful, 2-0 for Marseille with no answer by us. Altough, i was amazed by the performance of the team in this competicion, so as the fans and the board room.

2011/2012 Premier League

In the League, we did one more time great.

Objective: Euro Qualification
Final Position: 2th

2011/2012 Best Eleven

View attachment 83689

Well, this season I would like to single out Welliton, the team's top goalscorer and new signing of the club. He scored 30 goals!! Di Maria also did great getting 12 goals and 18 assists!! Simply wonderful

Goalkeeper: Artur Boruc
Defender: David Luiz
Midfielder: Di Maria
Striker: Welliton

Well, my favorite tactic is 4-5-1 using a advanced/complete forward, and two box to box midfielders. Allways closing down opponents, and depending on the game direct or shorter / quick or slower. Putting my goalkepper with a distribution "defendercollect" or "mixed". Sometimes I use 4-4-2 depending on the opponent. Thats the basic, the rest is "secret" and i aply every match.

But i remind this is a resume of the first seasons, i will comment match by match in the future, and show the aproach to the game.

Thanks for replying and keep up with that ;)

2012/2013 season will be out anytime soon, and then 2014/2015 (game by game)

Great results, nice one mate :)

2012/2013 Season

Well, after ending in 2th in the League, my personal goal for this season was one, and one only: Win the Premier League. So, i had 40M again and the business was good. This year, i invested on young players, but i also wanted a top goalkeeper, central midfielder and striker, to make the team perfect. So, i bought Ochoa (GK), Sergio Busquets (CM) and Defederico (ST), and i dont regret that.

Transfers 2012/2013:

View attachment 83741

So, as I said, Ochoa, Busquets and Defederico were the main transfers made by me in this season (15M, 7M and 11M respectivally). But, i also invested in youth, because i plan to be in this team for a long time. So, I bought Carlinhos (who became first team player 19 years old), Bahtiyar (loaned to Malaga), Léonard (Youth Team, 17 years old), Godwin Brown (First Team Player) and Marko Marin (not so young, 24 years old). I tried to bough Mesut Ozil, but he was to expensive.

After this, my dream team was completed:

Ochoa, Srna, Carlinhos, Brown, David Luiz, Miguel Veloso, Busquets, Fellaini, Di Maria, James Milner, Welliton(or Defederico/Cardozo)

2012/2013 Premier League

Well, i entered this 2012/2013 premier league winning almost all the games, but this season had one thing in particular:

Last 4 games:
Everton
Man Utd
Liverpool
Chelsea

This moment was crucial to my aspirations of winning the title, and I think it was because of it that we failed. Altough, we did a fantastic season and in normal conditions we would been the winners (82 points), thats what the normal champ made in the other seasons. Man City was to strong and made 91 this year, but we have to move forward and tell other glories of this season, and try to do best in the next.

Objective: Winners
Final Position: 2th

League Table:

Champions Cup Pride

As I said, my main goal was to be champion in the Premier League, but our career in the Champions Cup was one more time outstanding, and I think that cleans the fact that we didnt win the title.

Group Stage

One more time, we got Barcelona in the group stage, but this time we had to face Porto and Dinamo instead.

We did great, 1 loss and draw with Barcelona, and 4 fine and deserved victories. At the 4th game, we were on the 1st Knockout Round!

View attachment 83743

Next step: First Knockout Round
Opponent: Olimpique de Marseille (SOUNDS LIKE VENGEANCE)

And it sounded. After 1-1 at home in the first leg, an extremelly physical and emotional battle gave us the win in extra time:

View attachment 83745

At he end of the game at Velodrome, WEST HAM is Trough the Quarter Finals again!!

Next step: Quarter Finals
Opponent: AS Roma

This was one of the most satisfiyng results, because at the end of the 2nd leg, we could say: "We have beaten you, fair and square"

1st Leg: 0-0 at home; 2nd Leg: 0-2 for West Ham with no answer.

View attachment 83746

Next step: Semi Finals
Opponent: Real Madrid CF

After Marseille and Roma, the big Real Madrid again. For the first time, we played the first leg away. 1-0 for West Ham. Well, after this result, i though we were really on the final. But, NO, in the 2nd leg, Real Madrid overcamed us with a 3-0 at hour home. Classy Pato and Ronaldo made the goals, there's no response for that.

2012/2013 Best Elevenand Highlight Games

After a stunning 2012/2013 season, in wich I couldn't accomplish my goal of being champions, I was satisfied with the season. I had a great team, we could beat any club in the world. And more glory await us in next season!

View attachment 83747

In this year, I single out the whole team, I'm really fired up for the next season because I believe this players can bring glory to this Club.

Goalkeeper: Ochoa
Defender: David Luiz
Midfielder: Fellaini, Busquets
Striker: Welliton, Defederico, Cardozo (22, 18, 17 goals respectivally)

These three player scored 57 goals in total, and when one was in bad shape of lesionated, the other was ready to cover him up, thats a good group of player and team

Some good games in 2012/2013:

Wolves - 3 - 3 - West Ham

2013/2014 Season (July)

2013/2014 Pre-Season Starts!

Objective: Winner!
Transfer Budget: 61M €
Wage Budget: 5.668.644 €

Priorities:
Mesut Ozil (Attacking Midfielder)
Christian Zapata (Right Defender)
Send out, Afellay, Bherami and Artur Boruc
Loan Bahtiyar and Léonard

I like to have my team ready for the season in the beginning of Aughust, so I'm not worried about transfers and fully concentrate in the games. This time is special because we have a game in 11th Aughust, our first final, the Community Shield Final.

So, first thing I made: aproach Ozil and Zapata, I offered 15M both. Second, put on loan Bahtiyar and Léonard and tranfer list those players, unless Drenthe, but thats another story.

So, by 10th July, West Ham announced the first signing of the season:

Mesut Ozil (25 years old) by 20M plus clauses:
It was a good negociation, i offered 15M, they asked for 30M. So i offered 17M, and they 28M. I offered 20M plus 1,1M in 12 months and 1M in 30 games for the club. Accepted.

The second signing of the season, was Cristian Zapata (27 years old) by 22M. I needed a right defender, and Zapata not only does that position naturally, as he acts like central defender, so it was the perfect signing.

View attachment 83797 View attachment 83798

Last signing of the pre-season: Jindrich Krejci, a 22 year old central defender, for 6,75M.

View attachment 83799

Bahtiyar went to Sporting on loan, but Léonard didn't accept beeing loaned out to Sevilha, Hull or Portsmouth!! I put him in the youth team because he's only 17 yet.

The Registration Problem

As we Know, English Premier Division only allows you to register 25 players, having 8 grew up in england. So, by making these signings, I had 26 players in the squad, and only 6 players having grew in England.

The ones choosed to leave the squad were Affelay and Bherami, because they weren't really part of my plans for the season. So, Affelay went to Werder Bremen for 5M and Bherami went to Hull City by 5,25M.

But I have one more problem, i haven't 8 players for that stupid law so i sold Boruc (2,7M) to Sporting CP, brought a reserve goalkeeper to the first team and the best youth in the youth team. There it was, my squad was complete, and before the big match i made 5 friendlies, trying many tactics 4-5-1, 4-4-2, 4-1-2-1-2, 4-1-3-2, in possession or direct football.

Friendly Results:

West Ham - 8 - 1 - Lech
West Ham - 2 - 1 - Vallenciennes
West Ham - 4 - 1 - Trofense
West Ham - 2 - 0 - Leiria
West Ham - 2 - 0 -Chaves

Squad:

Goalkeepers: Ochoa, Adam Street, Robert Green
Defenders: Zapata, Srna, Luke Moore, David Luiz, Godwin Brown, Krejci, Tompkins, Carlinhos, Drenthe
Midfielders: Miguel Veloso, Mark Noble, Jack Collison, Fellaini, Sergio Busquets, Di Maria, Marko Marin, Mesut Ozil, James Milner
Forwards: Defederico, Welliton, Cardozo, Ashton

nice work
though givin' the money you have, didnt you want to go after some "better" players?

maybe, but i don't like spending too much, and to buy a top player with 61M you buy one and then you have 10M left maybe

plus, i allways reserve 15, 20M at the end of every season, thats why i have a great transfer budget

Community Shield - Wembley Stadium - 11th Aughust

West Ham vs Manchester City

The great official match of the is against rivals Man City, in my first final as a manager. This is a great oportunity to avenge last season premier league lost against them, but we are only worried in winning the game and bring the cup home.

Tactical Approach

Tactically, i opted for a 4-5-1 formation, with a deep defensive line, and adopting direct game style, playing quicker. Allways closing down opponents and showing them of to weaker feet, especially the two wing backs. I used a complete forward that is in constant movement on the front and desorients opponents defense, and tried to play down both flanks, trying to pass into space, exposing them to counter attacks.

The Game

I had no big hope about this game, in four seasons we only have beaten them two times. With the beginning of the came,
our team came with good chances to score, with Miguel Veloso and defederico. At the 45+4 minute, Fellaini scored after a great play by Defederico and that makes 1-0 for West Ham nearly the break.

At the team talk, i encouraged players to keep going, but instead of playing a direct style game, in the second half i adopted a more possession football, playing shorter, defender distribution by goalkeeper, passing to feet, retaining the ball and taking a breather.

We had great control in the second half, and Joao Moutinho scored an own-goal at 52nd minute. We kept the ball very well and they were unable to create chances.

Full time in Wembley Stadium

Final Result: 2-0
Winners: West Ham

The man of the match turned out to be Fellaini, who scored the 1st goal, but i would like to praise all the defence, and Sergio Busquets too.

Cool story mate & i love the layout... i'll try to follow.

August (Continuing)

The board don't regard the Community Shield as important to my career as manager, but it was very pleasant for me to win this trophy, especially because it was against Man City.

After this, the Premier Division have begun and I had more 4 games in August:

West Ham - 3 - 1 - Derby

View attachment 83931View attachment 83930

A good season start with a dominant win with 21 shots. Not so much ball possession but we had good passing and shooting, so the victory is deserved to the team. Top Players: Busquets, Ozil, Defederico. Good defensive display too.

Tactic: 4-3-1-2

West Ham - 1 - 0 - Cardiff

View attachment 83907View attachment 83908

An important win in a boring match. An own goal and an efficient performance in the back. Top Players: David Luiz, Zapata, Carlinhos

Tactic: 4-5-1

Blackburn - 0 - 1 - West Ham

View attachment 83909View attachment 83910

A nice win, completely anulating the opponent in their home. Only 3 shots by them, good possession and passing in an easy win. Top Players: Godwin Brown, Oscar Cardozo, Zapata

Tactic: 4-1-2-1-2

Wigan - 0 - 3 - West Ham

View attachment 83911View attachment 83912

In this game, we showed a clinical finish in front of goal. It was an equal game, and the 3 goals difference was to much for what happened in the field. We didn't play bad, but we didn't play good football and we have to improve. The difference in this game is that we have a top goalkeeper that had a very good performance. Top Players: Di Maria, Busquets, Ochoa

Tactic: 4-5-1

Mesut Ozil Dilema

In the end of August, I faced a dilema, Mesut Ozil, who costed us 22M can't settle in the area. Thats pretty annoying because i'm sure he'll be a top player in the future and want him to succed. So I asked his reccomendation for a player to sign, he said Sebastian Boenich, a left right back of Werder Bremen. Then, I started thinking, he's very similar to Drenthe as a player (can make all the left wing) and Drenthe is not really that important to the team.

I decided to put Drenthe on the transfer list, a lot of teams looked interessed, and he went to Portsmouth for 8M. Then i bought Boenich for 6M wich finished for completely the 2012/2013 squad. He's not really a very good player but is useful for backing up players in the both wings because he's a polivalent player.

View attachment 83926View attachment 83927

So, the 2013/2014 squad is:

Goalkeepers: Ochoa, Green, Adam Street

Defender Right: Zapata, Srna
Defender Left: Carlinhos, Boenich
Defender Centre: David Luiz, Brown, Krejdci, Tompkins, Luke Moore

Defensive Midfielder: Miguel Veloso
Central Midfielder: Busquets, Fellaini, Mark Noble, Jack Collison
Attacking Midfielder: Di Maria, Mesut Ozil, Marko Marin, James Milner

Strikers: Defederico, Welliton, Oscar Cardozo, Dean Ashton

P.S. Mesut Ozil continues to "cant settle in area", wich is ver frustrating, but i'm sure we'll get by

Champions Cup Draw - Group G:
Lyon
West Ham
Olympiakos
Urinea Urziceni

Considering last year we faced Barcelona and Porto, I think this may be an easy group to pass, but the team must not become complacent.

After a stunning August Month, having conquered the first title ever, and winning the four games in Premier League, in September we had the following games:

West Ham - 1 - 0 - Q.P.R

View attachment 84026View attachment 84027

Godwin Brown got sent off at 15th minute but we were allways the best team on the field. Having played a possession football, we had a couple of good shots, and could and should have scored more, but thats football. Fellaini scored the only goal at 30th minute in a 20 yard shot. Q.P.R. ended the game with nine man, and never worried us. Top Players: Fellaini, Carlinhos and Miguel Veloso.

Tactic: 4-5-1

West Ham - 0 - 0 - Olympiakos (1st Champions League Group Stage Match)

View attachment 84028View attachment 84029

With the stadium filled, everyone saw West Ham putting on a show, but football isn't allways fair, and this time we couldn't score even one goal. Olympiakos were totally overcamed by us and we deserved the win. That's not the best way to start the season in the Champions Cup but we still have 5 games and we're looking forward to win them. Top Players: Zapata, Brown, Ozil

Tactic: 4-5-1

Manchester City - 4 - 1 - West Ham

View attachment 84030View attachment 84031

Well, this was a match of great decision and I must say the final result is totally unfair for us. Man City were the best team in the field, but they were not that good, we started better but in their first chance Tevez scored. Then again at 40th minute Robinho killed the game for us. I think the problem is that we lined up in a 4-5-1 and we were struggling to make impact in front. At haltime I tried to motivate the players telling they could win this game, and put a 4-4-2 formation. We were better than the 1st half, but Tevez again scored just after the break. Fellaini reduced for West Ham at 85th minute but Tevez scored another one finishing of with a hat trick. Top Players: Fellaini, Busquets, Di Maria

Tactic: 4-5-1

Shef Wed - 0 - 1 - West Ham (League Cup)

View attachment 84033View attachment 84034

I wanted to score a lot of goals after being humiliated by Man City so we went to this game with a great attacking mentality. But, the problems continues, we keep missing many goals, and dispite winning the game, I got furious with the players and showed exactly what I though. Oscar Cardozo who came out on the break was the man of the match scoring the only goal at the 79th minute. We had a good game, controlling the opponent and mantaining good ball possession but we missed a lot of goals and that annoys me. Top Players: Oscar Cardozo, Tompkins, Zapata

Tactic: 4-2-2-2

Liverpool - 0 - 2 - West Ham

View attachment 84035View attachment 84036

This is it, a decisive match for us at the end of the month, Man City didn't won their last game and this was a chance to get on the top again. Before the match I had a friendly rivalry talk with Rafa Benitez to remove the pressure from the players. I really prepared this game permonized, because it was against rivals Liverpool, and because we were going to have another great match against Arsenal in the next week. So, I went on 4-4-2 classic formation with the quickest players in the squad so we could make superb counter attacks during the game. We succeded, it was a **** of a great match (17 - 18 on shots) and if the win had gone to Liverpool it would been deserved too. We had to much control during the game and scored in the right moments. Welliton scored in a superb counter attack in the first half, and David Luiz closed the scoresheet on second half with a header. Top Players: Welliton, David Luiz, Ochoa

Tactic: 4-4-2

Summary

After a September of great decision, I think we did well and now we are standing in the top of the table, but Man City has one delayed match.

Stats: 5 Games, 3 Wins, 1 Draw, 1 Loss (5 scored, 4 suffered)
Major Problems: Finishing and One bad match against City
Good Aspects: Important wins and four games without suffering
