What am I doing wrong?

I've never been the best tactician, usuall just relying on downloaded tactics, that I tweak to suit my team. Now I've taken a crack at creating my own tactic, which is not going as planned. I started off with a 5-2-1-2 formation, which now has ended up as a wide 4-2-4.

To make a long story short, it doesn't work. I've tried different things, different approaches, etc. but I still can't make it work. We barely seem to create any chances, and the AI only need 2-3 shots to score 2-3 goals. Not just that, but whenever I seem to lead by 1 or 2 goals, the AI suddenly decides to put 2 or 3 goals past me, like it's nothing. It does show some brilliance though, so I don't think that I'm TOO far off from having an, at least, semi-decent tactic. My only issue is, that I'm not sure what else to do.

Any help from some of you tactical geniusses would be greatly appreciated.

First, your tempo is the cause of lost possession, I would play it lower....second, your width is the biggest issue...for a counter mentality, you should play narrower, not wider....thirdly, you are not allowing the buildup play to develop, you should work ball into box and perhaps remove the play out of defence, for counter mentality you want your defenders on direct passes...and last, you use a complete forward and roaming playmaker, which aren't fit for a fluid style...there's a sticky guide on this section of forum on what roles and duties fit which team shape, read it...

1) A ball winning midfielder isn't a good holding player. Change him to a CM-D or drop him in the defensive midfield position.

2) Balance your roles. By that I mean play one attack one support duty on the wings e.g. Winger-Attack and Fullback-Support or Winger Support and a Fullback attack.

3) What's your idea on how you want to play? Do you want to play possesion, counter or attacking?

yeah, hes the agressor....if he keeps on getting to many cards, he can try a DLPd+DLPd
