What happened to my player?

I bought Cassano in the summer transfer window of my United save (2nd season) as reinforcement to the squad due to his versatility. But this has happened since he joined (see screens). Any ideas why? It seems very odd to me because he is only 27 which is supposedly the peak age yet usually in my experience other players of that age or who are supposedly at their peak still manage to improve, yet he has declined.
