the robust ones, 4-4-2 has proven to be very decent in 14.2, where as the 4-2-3-1 tactics seem to be less effective, for me atleast.

Pretty much the truth. I'm a big fan of the 4-2-3-1, so throughout 75% of all the (countless) hours I've spent on FM has been playing with this tactic. Recently tried out 4-4-2 for a change, and holy **** how much easier my life became..
 
Depends on your team, the league, the opposition. The strikerless ones seem most popular though
