Edin Dzeko on a free in 2013, Ivica Olic on a free in 2012 - both for Dinamo for the same wage (37,500), 11.2 patch.
Both are monsters - Olic scored 21 goals in 29 appearances in his first season and is matched for games and goals at 27 this season. Dzeko currently has more than 30 goals in less than 30 appearances. Both of them are tied for the top scorers in the Champions League with 12 goals each. Best nothing I ever spent in FM.
Other freebies include Pape Diakhate, Artur Boruc, Odion Ighalo, Tulio de Melo (the last two had immense re-sale value and brought a combined 13 million into the club coffers, which is an immense sum for Dinamo).

I got de rossi for free after his contract ran out at Roma possibly the best bargain i have ever had 
Olic (free), Christopher Samba (4.1m), Luis Suarez (Free), Miralem Sulejmani (Free), Gary Cahill (2.7m), Yaya Sanogo (13m, maybe not a bargain in some peoples eyes, but the goalscoring record he has for me is unbelievable, he's worth 22m now, so imo its a bargain), Cristiano Ronaldo (Free), Tomas Kalas (2.7m)... all for Newcastle
Olic became an icon for Newcastle, he was quite old when i got him, but he kept on scoring goals for me all of the time, and ended up getting loads of awards like European Striker of the Year (or whatever it is). Samba for 4.1m has proved a class deal, another fan favourite, strong, powerful, good in the air, easily worth more than 10m. Everyone knows what Luis Suarez is capable of, and to get the guy for free and see his value shoot up to 13m after one season, you know you've done a good deal. Sulejmani scores goals and ends up getting loads of assists, another great free transfer. Cahill has been outstanding for me at the back, very cheap when i bought him. I got Kalas to replace the aging Cahill/Samba, and he has been absolutely amazing, one of the best signings i have made. I've already said how much of a bargain Sanogo was, so i'll move to Ronaldo, obviously this guy is class, so for him to come to me on a free, and take a 25k wage cut, is a pretty good deal (saying that he is still on 225k pw, but he's worth it)
