Roma appoint Vicenzo Montella

Montella waving goodbye to Fiorentina fans

Italian giants AS Roma have announced the appointment of Vicenzo Montella as manager. The 39-year-old Italian leaves fellow Serie A side ACF Fiorentina after just one season to take the reigns at the Stadio Olimpico for the second time following a brief spell in charge in 2011. Montella's predecessor, Frenchman Rudi Garcia, left the club earlier this month after his contract was terminated by the Roma directors. Last season, Montella led the Viola to the final of the Coppa Italia before being beaten 3-1 by SSC Napoli as well as a 4th placed finish in Serie A.

After signing the contract, which will keep him at the club until the Summer of 2016, Montella said: "I'm very excited to take control of a club with a rich history like that of Roma's. I very much enjoyed my time at Fiorentina and thanked all of the Viola fans from the bottom of my heart. However, it is now time to return to my home at the Stadio Olimpico and take Roma to the next level. Here in Italy we have endured a spell of Juventus dominance in the past few years and it is in my best interests to knock the Old Lady from her perch. We have a healthy budget to support our aspirations for the new season which I hope will take this great club into a new era."

Before becoming a manager, Montella had a playing career which spanned 19 years. As a youngster, Montella wore the colours of Empoli, Genoa and Sampdoria over a 9 year span which captured the attention of AS Roma. In the Summer of 1999, Roma manager Zdenek Zeman spent €25 million on the 5'8" striker who went on to score 83 goals for Giallorossi. After retiring following loan spells at Fulham and Sampdoria, Montella was appointed Roma manager in February 2011. At the end of the 2010-2011 Serie A season, Montella moved to Catania after being replaced by Spaniard Luis Enrique. He remained at Catania for just one season before moving to ACF Fiorentina.

Almost a perfect start to my second stint as Roma manager as all of the players involved impressed me and my newly appointed assistant, Daniele Cavalletto. Ljajic thrived in his new role as a striker whilst legend De Rossi scored a 30 yard wonder goal.

An easy victory against lowly USC was secured thanks to two goals from in-form Ljajic. Several back up players, such as left-back Dodo, had a chance to impress here and nobody did their chances of securing a starting eleven place any harm.

Stade Brestois put up a tough fight today but we managed to overcome them thanks to a late Miralem Pjanic goal. New signing Gino Peruzzi particularly impressed today and may find himself being the first choice right-back ahead of Brazilian Maicon come the beginning of the season.

La Liga side Deportivo La Coruna weren't as good as we had anticipated today which led to us securing a comfortable win. Jose Angel, in talks to leave the club, scored the final goal in a 3-0 rout today after Destro had set us on our way early.

This was by far our best performance of pre-season as we completely dominated an experienced and clever Stade Rennais side. We turned up in North-West France expecting a tough battle and instead we steam rolled our opposition - scoring an impressive six goals, thanks in no small part to Adem Ljajic.

Our pre-season came to an end at uninspiring Belgian side RAEC Mons. A flurry of goals in the second half secured an easy 6-0 victory which sees us head into the Serie A season full of confidence.

Review

Having secured a perfect record in pre-season, we head into our first game at home to Genoa in confident mood. An attacking partnership of Adem Ljajic and Mattia Destro seems to be developing nicely in time for the beginning of the competitive season - let's home they can continue their form having scored 12 goals between them in six friendly games.

A fantastic start to the 2013-2014 Serie A season with a comfortable win over Genoa. New signing Daley Blind scored just before half-time to set us on our way. Genoa looked to have edged their way back into the game early in the second half but goals from Ljajic and Pjanic sealed three points for Giallorossi.

UEFA Champions League Group Draw

We've been drawn in a tough group alongside holders Real Madrid, Turkish side Fenerbahce and Swiss outfit FC Basel in Group E. Real Madrid are understandably favourites to progress as champions of the group, so it's down to us to try and beat Fenerbahce and Basel to second spot in the group unless we can cause an upset against Carlo Ancelotti's Real. Elsewhere in the draw, Group A has aptly been nicknamed the 'Group of Death' after Arsenal, Paris Saint Germain and Borussia Dortmund were drawn alongside each other. Legia Warszawa are the other team in Group A.

Very nice signings mate and a decent start. Keep it going. :)

How were you able to sell Gervinho as he had just joined and sign Lovren who had just joined?
Good signings though.

Roma are awesome to play with in this game (so are Lazio :D)

Good Luck!

Thank you!

I'm playing with LFCMarshall's latest transfer update (which I'd forgotten to mention in the OP. I'll edit now!)

I'm two months into the save and already thoroughly enjoying it! I did actually narrow it down to Lazio, Roma and Inter for the save and eventually chose Roma!

Italian striker Mattia Destro was absolutely on fire today as he scored a hat-trick in the second game of the season. Young Palermo striker Sebastian Sosa scored twice to give us a scare but we showed our quality and pulled through with a fine 4-2 victory.

A poor performance from us as we were behind for much of the match. Stand-in left-back Dodo was the best player on the pitch by a country mile and grabbed us an equaliser close to the end of the game. Conceding two goals for the second time in a row may lead myself and the coaching staff to take a look at our defence and how we can improve.

Another disgraceful defensive display from us but our attacking players were on another level. Pjanic, Ljajic and Destro linked up excellently tonight and they alone earned us all three points. Pjanic seems to have settled into his role after a disruptive Summer and looked world class tonight.

Miralem Pjanic was once again on another level and cruised through the game grabbing himself a brace. Michael Essien and Sulley Muntari were both deployed by Filippo Inzaghi to stop Miralem but he ran riot nevertheless. Our defence looked way more assured in possession and less likely to make any stupid mistakes.

We failed to turn up today as we conceded a worrying five goals to Serie A holders Juventus. Whilst we're all aware of Juventus' attacking qualities, we did little to prevent them from playing their game. Ljajic and Nainggolan were the only two players in our squad worthy of a goal and they both scored - Ljajic was particularly impressive in an otherwise poor performance. The less the said, the better.

A fantastic response from the team as we battered Napoli from the first minute to the last. Their only player who got close to us in terms of quality was Man of the Match, Dries Mertens. On-loan attacker Andre Schurrle has been kept out of the side recently by the form of others, but he replaced Pjanic in the starting eleven today and scored himself a goal.

Serie A Table

View attachment 362676
We sit in a relatively comfortable position of 3rd. Cagliari are expected to drop off although I'm too weary to be confident of that and they may offer us a challenge for 2nd. Defending champions Juventus have already opened up a 5 point lead over us which is worrying although I'm confident we can close the gap within the next month.

Champions League Group E Table

View attachment 362675

We sit drawn first with Fenerbahce who, surprisingly, beat group favourites Real Madrid 1-0 in the first game. We dominated Basel for 60 minutes until we allowed them back into the game and because of that early dominance, as well as Madrid's slip up, I'm confident we can progress.

Review

The first month of the 2013-2014 Serie A season has been mixed - we've been excellent at attacking, which is evident in the fact that we've scored 20 goals in just 6 games. However, our defence needs plenty of work if we have any hope of challenging Juventus' dominance in the Serie A or progression in the UEFA Champions League. October doesn't get any easier for us as we host Fenerbahce, my former club Fiorentina and travel to the Bernabeu to face Real Madrid.
