Why does Benfica have such a big transfer budget?

I have just played (And beaten! ) Benfica in the Europa league final first season, and I noticed after the match that Benfica had a net transfer spend of £48m! But I don't understand why they would have such a large budget?

Bilbao sold Javi Martinez for £40m and still only got a £20m balance, never mind the £16m-ish transfer budget (If you set expectations as mid-table)! But don't Barca and Real only get about £10m to spend, yet have massive balances...

Just think it's wierd, especially as there are alot of clubs (E.g. Porto) that have better balances, have sold more players recently and are bigger clubs yet have lower budgets, yet Benfica have £50m to spend?!
