Wrexham - All Welsh Affair

I did start a very similar save at the end of FM20 with Newport but with the new FM release just around the corner it was quickly scrapped as this is going to be a long term save.

The rule is very simple.... I can ONLY sign Welsh Players!

The ultimate aim will be to win the Champions League & Premier League with a squad made up of only Welsh players. I will also be keeping an eye on the International job further down the line as well.

So here is the Unqualified Sunday League Superstar tasked with accomplishing this colossal task.....

Screenshot 2020-11-24 at 12.23.05.jpg

I have been dealt a helping hand already following the high profile takeover from Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney as I have a whooping £1.2M in the bank and £100k transfer budget which is quite remarkable for a National League side!

I cant formally see their names within the club profile but am going with it.

Screenshot 2020-11-24 at 12.23.37.jpg

Screenshot 2020-11-24 at 13.48.17.jpg

Unfortunately the squad has not put me in a good starting position with just 2 Welsh players in the senior squad and nothing to note in the developments....

I guess the only positive is that Jordan Davies does appear to be the best player at the squad. However, I am going to need to try sign an obscene amount of players in the coming seasons to get a Welsh team together and hopefully keep my job along the way.

Here is our ray of sunshine, Jordan Davies. It actually looks as though he came through the Wrexham academy before moving to Brighton only to be released a few years later and now back at Wrexham. He looks a decent player especially for this level and still has 2 years on his contract which is very good news in case he felt like jumping ship at the end of the season.... because he can't!

Screenshot 2020-11-24 at 13.54.39.jpg

Screenshot 2020-11-24 at 13.56.40.jpg

It's almost going to be impossible to assemble an all Welsh team this season, but I wont be renewing any non-welsh players contracts so will be phased out in the next 2 years max.

Pre-Season

Pre-season is extended through to October following the Covid disruption giving us a couple of months to get things in gear. It's always difficult to gauge where the team is at following a pre-season as the opposition is so varied but on the whole it felt alright and the starting XI are looking match fit for the start of the season.

Screenshot 2020-11-25 at 09.59.12.jpg

With such a small pool of Welsh player so try sign I only really managed 3 deals as my scouts continue to scour the land for any Welsh talent knocking about at the lower levels.

We did however find 2 former Welsh internationals...

Screenshot 2020-11-25 at 09.59.37.jpg

Adam Henley continues to drop down through down the footballing pyramid following his Premier League spell with Blackburn back in the 11/12 season. Having been released by Bradford he now finds himself in the National League where he will look to rebuild his career with us. He should be a very good player at this level for us and has some invaluable experience.

Screenshot 2020-11-25 at 09.59.56.jpg

Craig Davies is very much a veteran striker at this point and likely just a 1 season wonder for us, which I guess isn't deal for my long term objective. We needed another striker and having not found a suitable younger candidate here. Should we fail to get promoted I may look to extend the deal by a year if he doesn't already have his sites set on retirement that is.

Good luck! Will be some achievement getting to the Premier League with a Welsh only squad

Thanks mate - Looking forward to the start of your new FM21 story, but good luck topping last years!

2020 Review

The games have been coming thick and fast at the beginning of this condensed footballing season. Injuries have mounted up at times, players have been forced to play outside of their natural positions but we sit 3rd in the League as we near the half way point!

It really hasn't been comfortable viewing from the touchline at times and we are actually a bit lucky to be as high in the table as we are.

Screenshot 2020-11-26 at 12.19.28.jpg

Screenshot 2020-11-26 at 12.19.46.jpg

We've managed to reach the Third Round of the FA Cup following a shock victory over Wimbledon as we managed to hold out for a 1-0 victory following an early penalty. The FA Cup does bring some extra revenue which is always handy at this level but realistically our cup run will be over in a couple of weeks time.

Screenshot 2020-11-26 at 12.20.09.jpg

A more realistic trophy for us is the FA Trophy and we get off to a solid start with a comfortable win over Boston United. The board have set a minimum expectation of reaching the Semi-Final which isn't ideal but we'll be taking the competition seriously with a chance to win some silverware.

Screenshot 2020-11-26 at 12.20.24.jpg

The board have agreed to upgrade the Youth Recruitment which is a massive step forward! Hopefully some decent Welsh prospects will emerge later this season as I look to overhaul the current squad.

Screenshot 2020-11-26 at 11.23.39.jpg

I have now put the non-welsh player on the transfer list to potentially try offload them before the contracts expire. The real issue is going to be assembling an all Welsh team as my scouts can currently only find about 180 realistic Welsh players (most are not good!)

Mid Season Update

I honestly didn't think we'd done as well over the past few months in the League than we had until I looked back through our results to see that we lost just 1 game! As you can see they have all been close games as we usually end up scraping a victory by the skin of our teeth but we have tallied up an impressive run of form over the past 3 months.

Playoffs now look to be all but secured unless we have a complete meltdown. With Notts County running away with the title we need to concentrate on finishing 2nd or 3rd to ensure we go straight through to the semi-final of the playoffs.

Screenshot 2020-11-27 at 12.19.03.jpg

Screenshot 2020-11-27 at 12.19.26.jpg

Unsurprisingly we bowed out of the FA Cup against League One opposition, Bristol Rovers. We actually put up more of a fight than I had anticipated to end a rather successful foray for us in the competition.

Screenshot 2020-11-26 at 13.35.43.jpg

Screenshot 2020-11-26 at 13.35.07.jpg

Frustratingly we didn't turn up against Woking in the FA Trophy and miss out on our best chance of silverware this season. With the home draw and above them in the League I thought we'd progress but it just wasn't meant to be.

Screenshot 2020-11-27 at 08.49.06.jpg

Screenshot 2020-11-27 at 08.49.24.jpg

Craig Davies season is over following a broken ankle. He has been our top goalscorer this season and was set to receive a contract extension at the end of the season but now i'm not so sure - At 35 years old can he bounce back form this? Or forced retirement?

Screenshot 2020-11-26 at 23.35.42.jpg

The board continue to invest in the development of the football club which is a rare change from previous low league saves i've done! I'm continually focusing on youth development as we can hopefully unearth a future Welsh wonderkid.

Screenshot 2020-11-26 at 23.58.54.jpg

Our new crop of youth prospects joined the academy.

We have a few decent prospects, including pick of the bunch, Miles Cook who's profile is added below.

Screenshot 2020-11-27 at 11.32.54.jpg

Screenshot 2020-11-27 at 11.33.13.jpg

My performances on the pitch have earned me a 1 year contract extension. They may live to regret that after I release nearly the entire first team at the end of the season but hopefully we can rebuild an equally adept squad if not better.

Screenshot 2020-11-27 at 12.16.43.jpg

End of Season 2020/21

Our form really seemed to fizzle out the past couple of months at the end of a very intense season! Despite the end of season jitters we manage to secure 3rd spot and avoid the preliminary playoff game.

I'm just hoping we have a bit left in the tank going into the playoffs and can hopefully secure promotion at the first time of asking.

Screenshot 2020-11-28 at 11.02.47.jpg

Screenshot 2020-11-28 at 11.03.25.jpg

We just about stumble our way to the playoffs final following a penalty in extra time. We were completely out played by Yeovil for the majority of the game and can count ourselves very fortunate to get the result.

We certainly need to up our game going into the Final!

Screenshot 2020-11-28 at 11.03.46.jpg

LEAGUE TWO HERE WE COME!

Once again we were second best for much of the game but managed to score the winner from a corner in the 85th minute. We received some rather stern words from the Wealdstone manager following the game about how lucky we'd been and although I agreed I was never going to publicly admit it.

Unfortunately for much of the squad their reward for promotion will be getting released by the club! Congratulations Team!

Screenshot 2020-11-28 at 13.05.03.jpg

Screenshot 2020-11-28 at 13.05.16.jpg

So our supposed best XI is a little different to what I would have chosen and features just 1 Welshman, Jordan Davies. So the majority of this side will be gone in a few weeks time as I try to build a squad capable of avoiding relegation!

Screenshot 2020-11-28 at 13.08.15.jpg

Screenshot 2020-11-28 at 13.08.50.jpg

I also managed to complete my National B license as I continue to build up my credibility for the Welsh National side in the years to come.

Screenshot 2020-11-28 at 13.10.36.jpg

The final was played on the 19th June and our preseason starts on the 21st June.... So just 2 days rest for the squad. Although I'll probably avoid scheduling some games for a little while

Interesting read, I went Wrexham frst as well, and managed to get them promoted.
Jordan Davies was key for me.

Yeah Jordan Davies was key for me as well and so glad he is Welsh for the purpose of his save! I felt quite lucky in the playoffs and despite promotion never really felt I mastered a 4-4-2 with that squad.

Pre Season 2021/22

I guess I should really start with the squad I have managed to assemble and as you can see it is virtually all Welsh! I gave Kelleher a 1 year extension as he is one of the best players at the club and the only player with some decent leadership qualities!

All of these players joined on free transfers with the exception of King-Harmes who I paid a hefty £25k for as I desperately need another LW. The starting XI is actually not too bad its just we have a lot of kids as backups.

Screenshot 2020-11-29 at 12.54.11.jpg

Screenshot 2020-11-29 at 12.54.42.jpg

Here are a couple of the best new signings...

Elliot Thorpe was released by Spurs and really strengthens midfield. Has the potential to be a League One player so should be with us for quite some time assuming we can keep hold of him

Screenshot 2020-11-29 at 12.56.53.jpg

Will Russ was released by Leicester and due to last seasons delayed finish actually joined us for the National League Playoffs, scoring in the final against Wealdstone. So has already proved to be a massive signing for us!

Screenshot 2020-11-29 at 12.57.17.jpg

I thought I'd throw this in here to show that the average age of our squad is 21.27!

We are quite literally playing with kids and if I released our 35 year old journeyman striker, Chris Davies then that would plummet even further! He is on a month to month deal but feel like we currently need the attacking depth.

Screenshot 2020-11-29 at 13.04.36.jpg

We have the smallest annual salary in the division and are highly tipped by the bookies to be heading back into the National League.

The aim this season is to avoid the drop and gradually attract more quality Welsh talent.

Screenshot 2020-11-29 at 12.47.09.jpg

It's been a chaotic pre-season with just 6 weeks separating the start of the 2021/22 season from securing our promotion to League Two, whilst assembling an entire new squad of players.

However, pre-season looked pretty good as we tactically move away from last season 4-4-2 to a 4-3-3 DM Wide

Screenshot 2020-11-29 at 13.37.12.jpg

1st October 2021

Life in League Two is proving to be tough, but I'd say we've actually been playing much better than I originally anticipated.

We are proving to be a very stubborn team to beat and continually find ourselves grinding out a hard-fought draw. If only we were a bit more clinical in front of goal then we could have had a couple more W's on the board by now.

Last season 31 points was enough to stay in League Two, so I guess achieving that is our initial goal this season.

Screenshot 2020-11-30 at 09.39.00.jpg

Screenshot 2020-11-30 at 09.39.17.jpg

My maiden voyage in the EFL Cup was no fairytale as we get unceremoniously dumped out of the competition by Middlesborough. We were never expected to get a result or have any realistic chance in the competition so it's no real loss, but I do love pulling off an underdog result from time to time.

Screenshot 2020-11-29 at 13.36.53.jpg

Screenshot 2020-11-29 at 13.36.34.jpg

The EFL Trophy is another new competition to us this season. Again our chances of winning are extremely low and the board have zero expectations so am quite happy to get knocked out and focus on League survival.

Having said that we did manage to beat Harrogate on penalties in our opening game. Still not really sure about the shootout after 90 minutes, feels very American to avoid a draw, but adds a bit of additional excitement i guess.

Good luck, keep us updated.
League 1 and 2 used to be bread and butter level of football for Wrexham, I can remember then kocking out Arsenal out of the FA Cup.

Welsh National Side Already?

Following relegation from the UEFA Nations league B and failure to get out the Group Stages at the Euros the Welsh FA decided to sack Ryan Giggs from his role as manager. They have won a few friendlies but their inability to get results in competitive games has proved costly.

Interestingly Croatia went on to win the Euros

Screenshot 2020-11-29 at 16.18.30.jpg

Screenshot 2020-11-29 at 16.19.08.jpg

Having noticed the vacant job I decided to throw my hat in the ring.

Realistically the chances of them offering the job to a guy with 1 season of managerial experience and playoff promotion from the National Conference to his name was zero, but I still felt I had to apply.

Screenshot 2020-11-29 at 16.20.30.jpg

Screenshot 2020-11-30 at 10.40.03.jpg

To my complete surprise....I didn't get the job!

They decided to disregard nationality and bring a much more experienced and qualified man, Åge Hareide. Looking at his reputation and attributes i have a long way to go before I'll even be entertained as the Welsh manager

December 2022

After bouncing in and out of the relegation throughout October and November, we finally managed to find some form in December and 4 victories has elevated us to 16th in the table. We now have 33 points which was enough to ensure to survival in League Two last season and surpassed my initial target. I'd think we've done enough to ensure survival but now need to push on and avoid any sort of relegation scrap.

We are actually only 7 points off the playoffs although quite a few teams have games in hands... I think that might be asking a bit much at this stage.

Screenshot 2020-12-02 at 13.38.33.jpg

Screenshot 2020-12-02 at 20.54.30.jpg

We fail to get out of our Pizza Cup Group following a couple of losses. Cup runs are always fun but this season has always been about survival so don't think anyone associated with the club is that fussed.

Screenshot 2020-12-01 at 08.26.01.jpg

Screenshot 2020-12-01 at 08.26.34.jpg

Screenshot 2020-12-01 at 08.29.29.jpg

Disappointingly we get knocked out of the FA Cup by National League opposition in Chesterfield following a replay. Am disappointed not to reach the 3rd round considering the draw and losing to lower league opposition is never nice, especially after 210 gruelling minutes.

Screenshot 2020-12-01 at 14.09.04.jpg

Screenshot 2020-12-01 at 14.09.16.jpg

We've had some injury problems the past few months - I feel like Kelleher was karma for extending a non Welsh players contract. However, both he and Will Russ have been big losses considering the lack of depth in the squad.

Screenshot 2020-11-30 at 11.02.23.jpg

Screenshot 2020-12-01 at 13.57.18.jpg

Then in our last game of 2021 we manage to lose 3 more players! Including Noah Daley for the best part of a year. He isn't necessarily a starting player but has been key for rotating the squad and we really are down to the bare bones now.

Screenshot 2020-12-02 at 13.30.39.jpg

I managed to bring one extra player in towards the end of 2021, Ashley Richards. Another capped fullback and adds plenty of experience to the squad. Its not a priority position but since he was a free agent and had plenty in the budget still felt I had to sign him.

We will need to bring more faces in this January as well if possible due to the mounting injury list.

Screenshot 2020-12-01 at 08.50.17.jpg

End of 2021/22 Season

I decided to just rattle through to the end of the season, mostly because our results in January and February were so poor and couldn't bring myself to write and update! After some criticism from the fans and a complete lack of goals I decided to tweak the tactic a bit and saw us end the season in fairly good form and steer clear of a relegation scrap at the bottom of the pile.

We finish the season in a very respectable 15th place and definitely a solid foundation to build on for next season considering we were heavy favourites to go straight back down to the National League.

Screenshot 2020-12-08 at 14.34.32.jpg

Screenshot 2020-12-08 at 14.46.51.jpg

We got a good boost in Broadcast Revenue but that was about it in comparison to last season. I suppose we did get a bit further in the FA Cup last season but am hoping we can start to boost are revenue over the coming season.

Screenshot 2020-12-08 at 14.30.42.jpg
Screenshot 2020-12-08 at 14.31.34.jpg

Another couple of decent prospects emerge from the Academy. Both Nash and Davies have the potential to break into the first team in a few years time and hopefully can develop into useful backup/cover players in the more immediate future.

Screenshot 2020-12-05 at 23.29.57.jpg

Screenshot 2020-12-05 at 23.30.11.jpg

Screenshot 2020-12-05 at 23.30.27.jpg

Here is our best XI for the season.

Will Russ was the stand out player picking up our Young Player of the Season alongside Best Player of the Season. He is really the only notable striker we have at the club so am hopefully going to pick someone else up this summer as we were pretty lost when he got injured!

Screenshot 2020-12-08 at 14.31.49.jpg

Pre Season 2022/23

We had another very pleasing pre season, especially as I managed to get the majority of our transfers all sorted before the Shelbourne game, so had a full squad to work with. It looks like we are shifting to more of a 4-2-3-1 with the players at our disposal and definitely going with more of an attacking impetus this season.

Screenshot 2020-12-09 at 12.28.22.jpg

Some transfers are listed on last seasons activity as I usually offer a £0 transfer fee for players about to be released to try get ahead of the competition so we did have a few more faces join than listed below - All free transfers though.

Screenshot 2020-12-09 at 12.29.13.jpg

Morgan Boyes looks to be the pick of the new players. He was released by Liverpool and is a regular U21 International that is equally adept at playing CB and LB so a very useful acquisition at the back.

Screenshot 2020-12-09 at 12.29.45.jpg

Here is a look at our all Welsh side as I finally managed to shift our final remaining non Welsh player this summer. Again the depth is still a bit patchy but am reasonably happy with the squad and hoping for a better season this year.

Screenshot 2020-12-09 at 12.42.34.jpg

Screenshot 2020-12-09 at 12.42.57.jpg

So the bookies have elevated us from bottom of the pile last season to 13th this season in their pre-season predictions, so possibly an outside chance of pushing for a playoff place.

Screenshot 2020-12-09 at 12.33.27.jpg

I hadn't realised how much we had boosted the salary budget from last season. We do have a few marquee ex-internationals on wage salaries above their value that I will be looking to ship on next summer but still with spending like this I really do expect us to be pushing for at least playoffs this year.

Screenshot 2020-12-09 at 12.58.51.jpg

The board continue to invest in the club as we see improvements to both youth recruitment and Junior coaching as we try to find ourselves a future Welsh superstar.

Screenshot 2020-12-08 at 22.32.56.jpg

Screenshot 2020-12-09 at 23.46.01.jpg

November 1st 2022

The 2021/22 season has got off to a much better start and early indications suggest we could be in contention for an automatic promotion spot. it is still early days with 2/3's of the season still to go but we are picking up some valuable early points.

Frustratingly we have really been struggling to convert our dominance in a number of games, leading to some unnecessarily nervy moments and dropped points. I'm hoping we can start to convert these chances and give me a more relaxing touchline experience!

Screenshot 2020-12-10 at 23.19.03.jpg

Screenshot 2020-12-10 at 23.19.29.jpg

Our opening game of the campaign was an EFL First Round defeat to Wigan. We were away from home and actually had the better chances to win, so despite the result was pleasing to see us hold our own against League One opposition.

Screenshot 2020-12-09 at 12.53.27.jpg

Screenshot 2020-12-09 at 12.53.43.jpg

The EFL Trophy is our only realistic shot at a cup run and with 1 game to go in the group phase we have a very good chance of progressing to the knockouts. Whilst the League is always the priority I am taking the competition seriously and fielding the strongest XI I can without jeopardising our League performances.

Screenshot 2020-12-10 at 23.19.18.jpg

Screenshot 2020-12-10 at 23.19.58.jpg

Leo Cullen joins on a free transfer to take us to the top of the pile for League Two wage budget.

I had been monitoring him for a while and after no other club wanted him, he eventually opened up to the idea of joining Wrexham, then weeks later lowered his wage demands to an affordable price.

He is definitely our best player at the club and should really be playing in League One at a minimum so am expecting big things from Cullen this season!

Screenshot 2020-12-10 at 13.27.50.jpg

1st February 2023

We are looking in pretty good shape heading into the back end of the season. Automatic promotion and even winning the League are both very much on the cards and a playoff place at worst looks all but secure. If we win our game in hand we will be 2 points off top spot so am extremely hopeful of securing a place in League One for next season.

Screenshot 2020-12-13 at 09.22.33.jpg

Screenshot 2020-12-13 at 09.22.55.jpg

We managed to get to the Third Round of the EFL Trophy in the Northern Section until we faced a Man City side featuring the likes of Ferran Torres. Always seems a bit unfair in this sort of competition but we did put up a good fight and nearly managed to take it to penalties.

Screenshot 2020-12-12 at 22.47.53.jpg

Screenshot 2020-12-12 at 22.48.10.jpg

We had a great run in the FA Cup reaching the 4th round after knocking out two League One sides, one Championship side until eventually narrowly losing to a Premiership side. So a good cup run and some useful broadcasting money to go with it.

Screenshot 2020-12-13 at 00.10.45.jpg

Screenshot 2020-12-13 at 00.10.22.jpg

England also went on the win the World Cup!

Wales failed to qualify for the tournament.

Screenshot 2020-12-11 at 23.14.13.jpg

End of 2022/23 Season

League One here we come!

We managed to hold our nerve and maintain our good form through to the end of the season to be crowned League Two Champions with 3 games to spare! It's been a terrific season all round considering the struggles we had last year and having beaten two League One sides in the FA Cup this season we should have some confidence we can avoid the drop back to League Two with the right additions.

Screenshot 2020-12-15 at 09.47.16.jpg

Screenshot 2020-12-15 at 10.26.19.jpg

Screenshot 2020-12-15 at 09.13.31.jpg

So we massively exceeded the board expectations of a mid-table finish this season, which has obviously put me in the good graces of the board.

Our average attendance went up by 1,000 from last season which is great to see but still along way off having a fully packed stadium. Big boosts in finances through sponsorship etc. is also very pleasing to see as we can hopefully re-invest more funds into developing the club.

Screenshot 2020-12-15 at 10.01.28.jpg
Screenshot 2020-12-15 at 10.01.45.jpg

The team of the season is pretty much how i'd have it although am surprised to see Leo Cullen not on the RW as he mostly played there this season for us and scored 12 times cutting in, so a much better return than Watkins.

Will Russ has been phenomenal for us this season and on paper really doesn't look anything special (profile below) but the guy scored 34 goals in 39 starts this season!

Can he replicate this form in League One will be the big question...

Screenshot 2020-12-15 at 10.02.21.jpg

Screenshot 2020-12-15 at 11.20.35.jpg

We scooped the League Two Awards unsurprisingly as new signing Morgan Boyes picked up League Two Player of the season, Russ got the golden boot and I got manager of the year!

Not a bad season.

Screenshot 2020-12-15 at 10.27.09.jpg

Screenshot 2020-12-15 at 10.27.21.jpg

So winning League Two has already placed me 10th on the Welsh Hall of Fame. Obviously this only takes into account silverware won but isn't a bad feat considering I'm 3 seasons into my career.

Unfortunately nothing really to shout about on the Youth Prospects this season. Cooper may turn into a back-up keeper but is unlikely to be challenging for a first team place.

Thanks mate!

League One will be a big step up but am confident we can avoid the drop.

Pre Season 2023/24

We had a pretty intensive pre-season as matches are much more effective at getting players match fit for the beginning of the season. We played a few sides that are considered well above our stature and really held our own so am feeling pretty confident of staying in League One this season.

Not a huge amount on the transfer front, as we focused mainly on loan moves now that we can attract some better quality players. We did bring a couple more players in that seem to be showing on last seasons transfers.

Owen Beck - Looks to be our highest rated player at the club and joins on a very modest wage. He definitely looks like a player that we will be looking to hold on to for the next few seasons as he is our only player deemed Championship quality in the squad

Chris Maxwell - We really needed a top quality keeper as ours was judged to be National League quality, so am delighted to bring Maxwell in who was a regular in the Championship for Blackpool last season. He was transfer listed for £150k but with his contract due to expire at the end of next season I'm hoping to get him on a free or a very cut price at the back end of this season assuming he performs for us.

Here is the squad for this season.

The starting line up probably is League One quality but again most of our backups are hovering around National League level so an injury free season would be much appreciated.

The bookies are predicting us to avoid relegation which is always good to hear.

It's never that accurate but the positive is they reckon our squad is strong enough to compete at this level.

We continue to pump money into improving the clubs facilities and hopefully boost our reputation in the process.

1st November 2023

Despite a heavy 3-0 defeat in our opening game of the season away to Reading, we have bounced back and starting to look rather comfortable in League One. I still think playoffs will be a bit out of reach this season but hopefully we can secure a mid-table finish and stay well clear of the relegation scrap at the bottom.

Barnsley were out for revenge following our shock FA Cup victory over them last season and I think they got it!

I fail to progress beyond the first round of the League Cup for a third consecutive season.

We also lose our best shot at silverware, failing to progress beyond the group stage with a game in hand. It is a fairly tough group but considerign our League form I was expecting us to do better than this.
