August 2010.
The new season is just about to begin, Leeds United are once again back in the Premier League and have just earlier today lifted the Community Shield.

An amazing feat after some truly stunning games and, honestly, loads of shear luck.
So before I delve into the new season, let's recap the story so far.

Do we really need another Leeds story, you ask?
Absolutely not, but who's to stop me?
So here we go....

DISCLAIMER:
I do try different teams, but sooner or later I always end up with Leeds again, so to make this save different from my previous attempts, I employed a little "soft-cheating" in the beginning.
By that I mean, I started the game a few weeks earlier than the start of the season, mainly to be able to arrange proper friendlies for some cash, and to have enough time to search for some decent staff. It was just a bit of a head-start for me, and realistically speaking, a new manager wouldn't start working at the day the transfer window opens, now would he?

I will try to recollect the previous two seasons to the best of my abilities, but some areas will probably remain a bit cryptic until I reach the here and now, so bare with me.

Also, I won't be putting screens up, for one cos I'm lazy, and secondly, and more importantly, my upload speed here is so low that it would take me 10-20 minutes to put up any screens, and frankly, I can't be bothered. In the future, maybe, right now, categorically no.

Early June 2008

For obscure and undisclosed reasons I become manager of Leeds United. It appears the board decided the first guy of the streets couldn't do a worse job than what was already happening, so here I am.

No assistant manager is in place, so the first order of business is to hire one. I scout, I offer but I get shut down from every one of my targets. It should be another few month before I am able to fill that position.

In the meantime, it is time to schedule some friendlies, both to create revenue (and thereby spending money) for the coming season, and to assess the state of the team.
Also, the list of players that do not fit into my plan is already firmly in my mind.

In the following weeks, many high-profile teams would be arriving to compete at Elland Road, with Manchester United and City, Juventus, Inter Milan, Galatasaray only some of the names.
After being rejected upon my first invitations, I appealed to their greed and offered them a share of my projected profits.

My best scout was send on a roaming assignment into eastern Europe and would find quite a few interesting players for me during the course of the season.

July 2008

All in all, up to the start of the transfer window, the club had recorded a record-profit of over 7 million. Great, I think, time to go shopping.
But wait, of all the money I brought into the club, none made it into my transfer budget, and my request for more funds was shut down "until I prove myself to the club".

In any case, I offloaded players that didn't fit into my plans, most notably Prutton, Angkergen and Robinson with some semi-decent deals that at the very least allowed me to hire some need blood for the coming season.
My major signings were Guus Joppen as DC and Adam Larsen as my new GK, for a combined 600k.
I managed to sign Stephen Appiah and Zamora as free agents, and two more who must have been so unimportant that the names just won't come to mind right now.

Pre-season was in no short terms sensational, both in terms of revenue (which I wouldn't see until January of the next year) and results. Amongst the highlights were a draw against Milan, a (dumb-luck) 1-0 victory over Juventus and 2 victories and one draw over Galatasaray, although both Manchester teams beat us quite heavily.

2008 - 2009 Season

All in all a fairly standard season. The board found Newcastle as a parent club, which helped out a lot in getting cheap loans since the budget was tight early on, we completely under-performed in the League cup after loosing our second game to a League 2 team (Grimsby, I think) and I started to fear for the worst.
The biggest challenge early in was the sheer number of injuries. Frazer Richardson broke his leg in the first fixture and would not play a single game in the entire season. Delph and Appiah both carried their share of knocks and minor injuries, Beckford was out for many weeks on end and many many small knocks and injuries lead me to hardly ever playing the same line-up twice in a row.

So, after the unlucky League cup exit, clouds were on the horizon....
Up stepped Howson and Michalik, about the only two players that managed to stay virtually injury free, and between the two of them scored most of my goals.
Michalik was just unstoppable at corners, and Howsosn speed down the wing and his ability from direct free-kicks made him probably the best player in my squad.

That said, despite a rough start to the season, the team came together and held a solid 2nd place going into the January transfer window.
Finally, some of the money I made playing all those super-clubs was made available, and head-first I jumped into the bidding war.
I sold a few more players that never played and most notably signed Kaldec, Delfouneso, Lua Lua, Illic, Milan Smiljanic(who would turn out a real ***) and Christian ***.
Almost all my money spend, the future truly depended on winning the league now (wage and transfer budget stretched tighter than Joan Rivers face....).

That said, with the exception of the FA cup, the team won almost everything, winning the League 1 with a comfortable margin as well as lifting the Johnston's Paint trophy.

2008/2009 Post-Season – 2009/2010 Pre-Season

With the season over, it was time to scavenge talent from recently relegated teams all over Europe.
One notable signing was Filip Trojan, from recently relegated St. Pauli who turned out a sublime left-winger for my team.
The team was once again combed for the weaker links, and players such as Becchio and Shownummi were finally creating interest from other clubs.
Newcastle send me a decent goalie on loan, as I didn't have any adequate cover for Larsen in goal, which meant I could save my transfer money by not needing to hunt for a new keeper this time around.

I staked my reputation (and my job) on declaring to challenge for the title to squeeze every penny out of the board for transfers.
One of my biggest finds was Dimitris Papadopulous (spelling?). The former Greek international striker joined me for a pittance as a free agent, and was by far my best scorer in the first half of the coming season.

Right about now, my troubles started to happen with some of my more prominent players
(see http://www.fm-base.co.uk/forum/f55/heavy-depreciation-of-players-t19900.html ).

Basically, bigger clubs were declaring interest in my star players, leading them from unhappy to flat out refusing to co-operate (e.g. straight red cards in matches, not showing for training sessions, etc).
Normally, I would have let them go, but both my ambitions were in jeopardy with those key players leaving and my transfer budget was tight without having to shop for replacements.
That, and both players had vastly depreciated in value. Milan Smiljanic (the aforementioned ***) had dropped from around 3M to just over 500k, and I was absolutely unwilling to let him go for next to nothing compared to what I payed for him.
Luckily, Appiah was injured going into the season, so no-one bid on him, and Delph declared in no uncertain terms that he has no intension of leaving Elland Road in the near future.

Anyway, I was hoping for the best as the season started, basically praying for my unsettled players to either regain their happiness or at least a fraction of their value so I could replace them properly.

2009/2010 Season

Again, a few injuries here and there, but not as bad as last season. The start was OK with spurts of brilliance followed by completely avoidable defeats by bottom-table teams, but we found ourselves always bouncing up and down between 3rd and 8th, not too bad for the first season.
Once again, the League cup continued without us after the 3rd round, but we steadily installed ourselves within the top four in the league table.
Not too bad a feat with the relegated West ham, Hull City and Fulham making up the other three teams.

My two problem players were still unhappy coming into mid-season, but their sub-par performance coupled with a few injuries didn't exactly lift either spirit or value.
The plan was hatched to loan them out come January, hope for a team to cover their wage and keep them until next season. With the possibility of Leeds gaining promotion to the Premier League, they just might come around and stay....

The January window opened, my latest signings finally arrived, and what signings they were....
Adailton and Jaoa Paulo from Brazil joined my team, Aleczic (spelling?) arrived as well.
The latter was actually an accidental signing – I mistook my scouting reports and signed him instead of the midfielder I was gunning for, which unsettled Beckford (too many strikers) so that I impulsively transfer listed him right on the spot.
I brought in Espen Ruud to cover for the loaned-out Illic and the injury prone Richardson to finish my transfer frenzy.

About that time I switched my tactics from my former 4-5-1 variant to a slower 4-4-2 play (based on Brian Clough Tactics by JP Woody but with a tad more speed and counter attacks, and a variation of it with wingers instead of MR and ML).
The first few games seemed promising, not scoring much but conceding even less, and slowly, going into February I reached the top spot in the league for the first time.

Adailton paired with Papadopulous started to really tear up the opposition (with the former becoming my teams top scorer in only half a season), my midfield really clicked and the added speed in defense with Ruud and Jaoa Paulo managed to cut down most opposition before they even had a chance to challenge my keeper.

I managed to slowly leave the 2nd place in the league behind, at times leading by 12 points or more before a laps in concentration cost me a game or two, but for a brief period of only around 2 weeks I never relinquished that top seat anymore (and then only because I had games rescheduled due to international duties or cup games).

Yes, cup games.
I was determined to prove my worth to the club, drawing a few non-league teams early on (Kettering for one) and my goal was – don't loose to any team lower than yourself.

It was almost over against Birmingham, I only just equalized in extra time before seeing them off at home with a solid 2-0 performance.

The field was thinning out, and I got a lucky draw with Bristol City in the next round. Although a Premier League team, they were very much beatable (with the extra incentive of having loaned my unhappy Illic to them).
I was going into the game with mixed feelings. For one, we had a great run, and maybe concentrating on the league would be more beneficial in the long run, but I'd be damned if I went without a fight.

I was actually able to field my choice starters for this game, and pundits had me slightly favored even we played away from home.
To cut to the point, after trailing at half time, I had the first experience of players praising me after the game for my inspiring team talk. I don't remember what I said exactly, but the second half almost seemed as if I was previously only playing my reserves. We dominated, and only bad luck prevented us from only scoring two goals to win the match.

I was elated to say the least, and for the first time that tiny voice emerged saying, maybe, just maybe, this is our year....

The League games were going well, by now the team was really playing as a unit, and the next cup round was coming up with us drawing Sunderland.
Again, a quite beatable team, I thought, with, as it happened, my other loaned-out player on their side.

It was another hard-fought match, but Leeds remained resolute and emerged victorious.
By now we we were the only non-premier league team still running, and that in itself is a great achievement.
I was watching the other teams match-ups with anticipation.
Some unexpected results had Newcastle, Manchester City and Manchester United advance to the semi finals.

As luck would have it, we were matched with Newcastle, probably the easiest of the remaining teams.
Leading up to the game, I was close to tears – my star goalkeeper was out injured, and my backup was a loan from Newcastle – and not eligible for the cup tie.
Literally the day of the tie, Larsen was back in business, a huge relief for my side.

The game was played in Wembley, star line-up all ready, excited, terrified, all that and a bag of chips.

And it turned out a truly unremarkable match....
Little chances, we never dominated, we never were dominated, somehow scored twice, conceded once and then it was over. It felt like an end-season game, with the place in the table decided, nothing to win, nothing to loose, just 90 minutes of play – until it sunk in.... We reached the f'ing final.
How exactly did that happen?

By now, the league was all but over.
We drew against the second, demolished the 3rd, lost against the 22nd, and 5 games to go, we clinched promotion, and won the league with 4 games to go.

Time to play all my subs, lest I injure one of my star players before the historic bout against Manchester City (who somehow kicked Man U out of the cup).

I was not exactly hopeful, seeing as how they had literally demolished my team in Pre-Season on home ground, but with our recent performances I gave us at least an outside chance.

The big day and, I must say, the most exciting game I had so far. City had a few injuries to starters, but they came out flying, and how and how often they missed my goal and tested Larsen when they hit, I was rapidly loosing confidence. About 30 minutes in, one of the most clinical counter attacks that I have ever witnessed had Adailton give me the 1-0 at half time.
Great, I think, leading at the half against a team that is CLEARLY better than us, there's really nothing I know in team talk that they can let me hold on to that. I praised, declared faith, and only peaking between the fingers covering my face I had to endure the equalizer after only 3 minutes played in the second half.
We were hammered, overrun, all that and more, but City just couldn't hit the goal, two crossbar attempts not withstanding. With time almost up, another brilliant move between Adailton and Alczic, almost an exact replica of our first goal, had us go up by one.
The last five minutes or so of that game must have been the longest of any game I played, and Larsen almost giving it up right there with a botched clearance. The whistle was sweetest sound I have heard since starting that save.
Leeds United, FA cup winners.

It was all coming together.
Championship champs, FA cup winners, qualified for Euro Cup, my trouble players back up in value, and the cup price money alone should allow me to make some key transfers very soon.

2009/2010 Post-Season – 2010/2011 Pre-Season

Just as the season was about to start, the chairman retires. Take-over bids, transfer embargo, all that just when I need to make some key signings to not completely crash and burn in the Premier League, just my luck.
Fortunately, I was able to finalize a deal to bring Wynaldium to Elland Road, just before the last season ended so at least my midfield has gained depth, no matter when the embargo is lifted.

Luck would have it that Tottenham came knocking with a great offer for their vacant manager position.
I'm not sure if me rejecting that offer made any impact, but only two days later I was able to do my magic on the transfer market.
Many of the old faithfuls are getting the ax this time, Illic seemed more happy to stay now, but Smilianc got the boot, and not even that, I sold him to a club in the lower leagues.
Serves him right, ungrateful *******...

Well, I had to seriously invest, and with all my transfer money gone I added Beevers, Feghoulie,Wilshere and German Lux to my squad.
Coupet, which I found on the free market, decided against my offer. He would have been a great tutor for my younger goalies, but what the ****.

I forgot to take my assistant of arranging friendlies, so they were all set and done before I could blink, I only got to schedule a match against Bayern Munich, which we quite comfortably took 2-0 on our home ground.

With the season about to start, the last match in my post mortem is closing the circle:

August 2010.
Chelsea – Leeds United for the community shield.
No injuries on either side, Chelsea heavily favored 1-4 the match was about to begin.
It would be overstating the fact to say we ruled, but we did hold our ground.
3 minutes in, Adailton is taken off with an injury (officially a wonder kid now, and hands down my star player), things were looking grim.
A lapse in concentration by Alex, who headed the ball past the quite lethargic looking Cech gave us an early lead. Chelsea were bringing the heat, but my defense held firm until Michalik hammered in a header from the corner just before halftime.
I tried everything I could think of to keep my team up and listening, and keep that lead, but Chelsea really brought on the heat. Drogba somehow weaseled one past my defense before Lampard equalized with one lightning bolt of a free-kick from just outside the box.
The game slowed down a bit, at least we were evenly matched, and in my mind I was thinking overtime already and considering which players to sub in for a possible shoot-out, when Chech made a superb assist to my waiting Papadopulous at the edge of the box with nothing between him and the goal for the 3-2 final result.

Only time will tell how much more luck I can have before it runs dry, but I am hopeful of the coming season.....

THE END (for now)

---------- Post added at 12:10 PM ---------- Previous post was at 10:29 AM ----------

Alright, next match is against Meccabi Netanya, a greek team I think, for a spot in the EURO Cup.

Adailton is out for around 3 weeks after the challenge in the Chelsea match, but I should have it covered.

My line-up right now is as follows:
if more names than spots it means I rotate the layers, if the names are in brackets it's my designated subs for that position

GK
German Lux/Adam Larsen

DL
Jaoa Paulo (Ben Parker)
CB
Beevers, ***, Joppen, Michalik
DR
Illic, Espen Ruud (Richardson)

ML/AML
Feghouli (Fillip Trojan)
MC
Delph, Appiah (Bradey Johnson, Kilkenny)
MR/AMR
Wijnaldum, Howson (Lua Lua)

ST
Adailton, Danijl Aleksic, Papadopulous (Delfouneso)

I have Kadlec and a regen striker named Pena out on loan and they seem to be progression rather nicely.
I also still have my eye on a guy named Vladimir Yurchenko from Saturn who looks very promising, but I might put that up until January and let all the new signings gel together first.
And I should possibly get more English guys on board, lest I have some injuries and can't meet the homegrown rule for the Euro Cup.

Only in that I started the first season a month earlier in June 2008 to get some starting funds.

AUGUST 2010

Leeds 3 - 0 Meccabi Netanya Papadopulous, Aleksic, Alexsic
The first game on the European stage pitted me against the Israeli team of Meccabi Netanya, and I am honestly disappointed that we only managed to put away 3 in a match that we clearly dominated.
31 shots, 10 on target, 18 blocked and 3 disallowed goals with a possession of 61% and 84% of passes complete still doesn't tell the whole story.
Papadopulous started the scoring early in the first half, before Alexsic finally added to the tally after having his two previous goals disallowed.
A quick scare followed with my goalie Lux getting a knock, but having learned from previous experiences, Larsen was ready from the bench (and quite bored for the rest of the match I must add). The second half saw more of the same with Alexsic getting his second of the game for the final result.

All in all a very satisfying return to European football for my Leeds team.

Lux is out for around a week, so nothing to worry about in the long run, and Larsen is quite capable as he has shown so far.

The regualr season is about to start with a match on homeground against Aston Villa.

Leeds 1 - 2 Aston Villa Delph
The combination of Adriano up front and Asenjo in goal proved too much in the season opener.
While I had pretty much all of Villa's star players covered and doing very little, Adriano tore through my defense with uncanny ease. At the other end, Asenjo was an absolute monster in goal, and hitting the crossbar twice once he was beaten was just bad luck.
Delph's stunning freekick gave a glimmer of hope, but it came a tad bit too late.
All in all a bit disappointing, but I had expected worse, and the season is still young.

Everton 2 - 0 Leeds

Another game well played but proven rather unlucky. After several tests I'm pleased to announce that the crossbar seemed to have been of superb quality as it held firm despite numerous thundering hits from my wingers. A questionable offside decision saw our goal disallowed and only minutes later a clear-cut chance was killed in its tracks when Cahill's foul was called far away from the action despite us having possesion in their penalty area.
Well, that's football for you....

Meccabi Netanya 1 - 1 Leeds ***

The return leg of the Euro Cup qualifiers should give my team some much needed confidence.
It was a lot closer than it should have been. M.Netanya came really out to play, and they certainly put on their shin-kicking boots giving my players some nasty knocks (and leaving beever out for a month). They scored an, admittedly, nice goal in the second half before *** could equalize with a strong header from a corner.
4-1 on aggregate leads Leeds (he he) to the group stage of the Euro Cup, and about a million in cash prices to get so far is certainly not a bad thing either.

Olympic Lyonais is hard on the trail of Adailton, his injury however still seems to concern him more than me rejecting their offer, so hopefully with some decent playing during the season I can convince him to stay on board with me. I'm certainly not looking forward to another Smilianic-type scenario.

Leeds 2 - 1 Newcastle Adailton, Aleksic

The first 3 points of the season didn't come easy. Newcastle was of to a flying start with Owen scoring in just under 2 minutes. It didn't look good at that point with Newcastle piling on the pressure, but slowly the team held their ground and Adailton showed why he is my best striker by first scoring his first goal since his injury and then setting up Aleksics' goal with a wonderful 1-2 pass just before half-time.
The man of the second half was certainly my goalkeeper Lux with some fanatastic reflexes, weathering the storm that the Magpies unleashed and even standing firm against the mighty 4-2-4 for the last 15 minutes of the match. Our own chances were solely counter-attacks and we each team could have scored, but in the end our luck prevailed and we bagged the points.
The downpoint was certainly that Michalik picked up a month-long injury leaving me with no real backup for the DC position until both he and Beevers are back.

August fixtures completed we will be enjoying a rest for the next two weeks until we face Hull. 18 of my players will be away on international duty, hopefully not picking up any more injuries in the meantime.
I'm glad to see Howson finally being called in for the England U21 squad, as he has been, in all but name, a true wonderkid for me. *** will also see his first cap for Holland and Papadopulous has been recalled to play for Greece and my spanish regen striker is called for his first U18 game.

A good read mate, even though it sounds like luck was on your side. :P
How did you start a month before though? :S

I totally agree with the luck part. League 1 was hardly ever in question, but the Championship could have gone either way. And the FA cup run is pretty much the sole reason I started writing all this down.
After all this time playing this game it was about high-time that I finally hit that miracle season.
Also a few of my signings were rather cheap as I clinched the deal while they were injured and I paid less than I should have had they not been...

To start earlier I simply selected a different option at the screen where you can add the leagues. Bottom right bar, the first option is game start date, and there are several that start in January/February and a few that start in June.

As I mentioned, I play Leeds a lot, and that was my way to add a slightly different scenario than simply making a new game, rounding up the usual suspect free agents and basically do the same thing again. Also, I was a bit fed up with being stuck with all my staff (simply sacking one useless coach is already busting my transfer budget).
The best way (tip from another thread) to get my cash was to arrange friendly mini-leagues in the pre-season against some high-profile teams. The predicted revenue was between 1-3 million per such event and sooner or later the board was bound to give me back some of it to make transfers.

I just like to create scenarios for my teams (like in real life Wimbledon's awesome run before, or more recently Hoffenheim's rise to glory with financial backing of a former youth player).

SEPTEMBER 2010

The Euro Cup group stage puts us with Lech, Porto and Lille, not an easy group by any standard. But then again, my personal expectations aren't that high either. My goal is to put up a fight and not get beaten too badly, and certainly make some money in the process to strengthen the squad.

I had to spend some money on a new contract for Adailton, and now it seems he's determined to stay in my camp, despite continuing offers from Lyon, a huge relief for me at this point.

Hull 1-1 Leeds FeghouliHull came out flying and things didn't look too promising early on. My team slowly composed itself and we returned the pressure. Myhill made some stunning saves until Feghouli managed to nod the ball in from a perfect Wijnaldum cross to the far post, giving us the edge 1-0 at half time.
Second half was all Leeds without us failing to add to the tally, and Hulls equalizer in the third minute of 2 minutes extra time, on their only chance in the second half, was a true kick in the groin for us.
I really wanted to take some match confidence from this fixture with the first game against Lille only 4 days away.

LOSC Lille 1-1 Leeds Adailton

The first half was a real back and forth, great chances on both ends with the best display a stunning solo effort by Alksic, dribbling past 3 defenders and ultimately being denied by my old nemesis, the crossbar. The second half started badly with a great volley by Chedjou from the edge of the box for Lilles goal of the match. We fought back valliantly, finally being rewarded by a headed goal from Adailton. The last 10 minutes were all Leeds, corners and freekicks galore. Lille seemed really worried, getting 5 yellow cards in the last ten minutes, sadly for me, injuring Delph in the process. The draw, on the whole, was a fair result, although judging by the last mintes f the game I would have really liked to take the three points home with me.
In any case, a great start to the group stage.

SEPTEMBER 2010 (continued)

The next match is coming up after the two weeks break.
My players did mostly rather well in their international fixtures, and I spend some time browsing the Free Agents. This time around there are some amazing finds, mostly older guys but great signings and great tutors none the less.
Among the highlights I found were Paul Scholes, James, van der Saar and Kuranyi. I got my scouts out to check them out and did some work on both van der Saar and Scholes, as they, right now, have no interest in joining Leeds. **** rivalaries.

Anyway, on to

Leeds 1 - 1 Reading Aleksic

Another frustrating result in a match we should have taken. While not dominating, we certainly put on more pressure during most of the match, but never really testing the goal keeper.
Going down one goal in the second half, Reading put up the barricades and proved impossible to break down in defense. We had three disallowed goals until literally in the last second Aleksic finished off a clinical cross from Lua Lua to equalize.
One point is one point, but I was expecting more frm this match.

I decided against any of my free transfer targets. I have a pretty full team at the moment, with quite capable backups to every position, and I don't want to unsettle my team more than I need to in the upcoming season. The only signing I secured for the coming transfer window in January is yet another Papadopouls, a young central defender from Olympikakos. Both Beevers and Michalik seem rather injury prone so I decided to bring one more player into the rotation, just to be on the save side.

Leeds 3 - 0 QPR (League Cup, 3rd Round) Adailton, Aleksic, AleksicA game I'm really hoping can be used to build up confidence for my team. QPR is struggling at the lower end of the Championship, and I need some goos spirit for the tough Chelsea game only a few days from now.
The game started rather strong, Adailton scored a beautiful curled shot from the edge of the box before Aleksic finished of some dazzling pass play with a 30 screamer to give us a halftime lead of 2-0.
I toned down the tactics a bit at half time and took off my star players, lest they pick up an injury. QPR never seemed likely to make anything happen so I was quite confident of the second half. Beside one shot on goal and 2 easily cleared corners, nothing really came from the Queens, and the match mostly happened in midfield.
Aleksic scored his second of the game with a nice curled shot in the 80th minute to make up the final result. Not the bets game I've seen my guys play, but a solid performance non the less.

Chelsea 3 -1 Leeds Wijnaldum

The result does not do justice to how badly we were outclassed during much of the game. Vargas scored an unstoppable freekick early on whith Drogba scoring shortly thereafter. German Lux in goal was the sole reason that there wasn't more damage dne in the first half.
Towards the end we finally managed to cross the halfway line with the ball, and actually managed to test Cech a few times, but to no avail.
The second half started a lot stronger for us, at the very least playing like real contenders, but once again the woodwork proved to be the preferred target for my strikers. Wijnaldum gave a brief moment of hopefulnes by scoring his first goal of the season but only moments later Drogba popped up again and selaed the deal for the final result.
All in all, it was a fair result. Secretly I was hoping for a repeat result of the Community Shield final, but after the first few minutes it was quite clear that the best to hope for was to go out with pride. We didn't get hammered, and in a season where the main objective is to not get relegated an upset against the top dogs is an outside chance at best.
I hope my team can grow and regain some confidence in the upcoming game against Lech in the Euro Cup.

Leeds 4 - 1 Lech (Euro Cup Group Stage) Michalik, Beevers, Adailton, Adailton

To make a long story short, what Chelsea did to us in the last match we did to Lech.
The result was never really in doubt as we came out running and never stopped to pile on the pressure. The first two goals came from corners, and Adailton finished a sublime solo-effort for the halftime lead. A stupid misunderstanding between Michalik and Lux in goal had Lech pull one back, but that was about the closest they got to my side of the pitch for the rest of the game. Adailton added his second shortly thereafter, but despite several more chances was ultimately denied his hat-trick.
All in all a good game, and I had expected nothing less in this match.
I just hope we can transfer some of our International form onto the upcoming league fixtures.

Michalik picked up a 3 week injury and Aleksic will be out for around two, quite a blow for me as I need to bring my A-game in the coming league fixtures.

September has come to a close, we're at 15th place in the league with 5 points from 6 games and second in the Euro Cup after two games. More to come...

can we have screenshots please, all the reading does my head in

yea same lol

screenshots would be easier aswell

Yes, mother, I shall obey...

It's actually not as bad as most days with my upload speed today, so I guess I can add a few more of those babies in the future.

For now, here's my squad for when they're all healthy.

Leeds 4 - 1 Bolton Adailton, Appiah, Adailton, Wijnaldum

The game started with a rather silly defensive display, where no one seemed to be willing to pick up the Bolton attackers leading to their first and only goal. The early goal didn't seem to phase my guys too much (unlke myself, fearing for the worst in a must-win game) and after Adailton opened the scoring for us, we never really let of the pressure.
In all fairness, Bolton did manage to test the stability of the crossbar twice, but on the whole the result was never in any doubt.

Lyon is still hassling me with declarations of interest in my wonderkid Adailton, almost every other day, but so far he's going on the record stating how much he loves the team and the fans. I just hope I can keep a respectable performance in the season to make it stay that way.

Yet another two weeks break is coming up with international fixtures before it's time to travel to Manchester and take on City.

Thirteen of my guys away on international duty (mostly youth caps), and four players in the team of the week is not too bad for now.

Manchester City 0 - 0 Leeds

Manchester City was missing some key players in an overall quite average match. We did a lot of bamboo style playing: bend, but not break, and then snap back in force.
All in all, chances on either side in a game that could have gone for either side, but neither deserved to win.
I'm quite proud at the amount of possession we had during the game, and most shots by City came from quite some way out, hardly ever testing Lux, who nevertheless made a few key saves as did Given at the other end.
A draw against City is not too bad for this stage of the season.

OCTOBER 2010 Continued)

Porto 2 - 0 Leeds (Euro Cup Group Stage)
Once again, completely outplayed. That we only conceded two goals is almost flattering. Hulk is absolutely unreal, and no stopping him once he get's going.
We had a few good moments and some rather nice passing, and I'm glad we could keep the ball a fair amount of time, but there's simply no denying which team was the better on this day.
Despite Port playing an extremely physical and rough type of football, at the very least we walked away without any injuries.

Only two days before the game against Tottenham.

Leeds 2 - 3 Tottenham Adailton, Adailton

One of those infuriating games again. It started badly with a freekick from Tottenhams own penalty box sailing all the way to my own 16 yard bx, with Defoe beating Lux for an easy finish. The second goal came completely against the flow of the game. We were pressing, passing, shooting and then ultimately beat with another counter, Tottenham having scored on both of their only shots even close to my own goal. Defoe's second was a carbon copy of his first goal, only differing in the corner of the goal he put it.
Adailton scored his first shortly before halftime, a much needed booster before the break. The second half was all us, piling on the pessure from all angles, getting rewarded with Adailton's second score from a great Aleksic cross, but some bad luck paired with some of my players apparently putting their boots on the wrong foot (only explanation I have for some misses from close range with the keeper already beaten) saw Tottenham ultimately prevail.

I did not the greatest hopes against a team like Tottenham, with no injuries to speak of, but watching the way we performed, and through long stretches clearly outplayed the oppososition I am a little distraught to not come away with at least a point.

I guess that is where the experience comes into play, that my very young team is clearly lacking in some areas. Judging by the post-match stats we should have achieved more....

West Brom 0 - 0 Leeds

A boring match if I ever saw one. West Brom was a lot stronger than their low league position suggested, but the highlights were nevertheless few and far in between. No one on the pitch seemed to really care about one thing or the other, and with the exception of the last ten minutes or so, when my team finally seemed to realize that the objective in football is to get that round thing into that rectangular thing it was largely disappointing.
This was a must-win fixture to be sure, and two points lost for us.

October was largely disappointing, with the early wrecking of Bolton being the only true highlight, and November won't be any easier. We'll be facing Lille in the Euro Cup, Liverpool in the League in Man U in the League Cup next....

NOVEMBER 2010

November started with a stunner on the transfer market for me.
To recap, Flaurent Malouda had grown unsettled, moved to the reserve squad at Chelsea. His value dropped to just around 1.3 million, yet scouts still told me he was much better the Feghouli.
He had no intention of joining, according to the report, but I thought, what the ****, give it a shot.

My offer was accepted by Chelsea, but I could only offer him about half of his wages (maximum the board would allow). Well, it seems either the other clubs offered even less or where somehow lower stature of me, or he jst wants to prove a point by joining a rivalry team after falling out at Chelsea, but the deal was just sealed and he'll be joining our squad in January.

Certainly a good addition, for not too much money either, and even if he pans out second string he'd be just awesome as a tutor for my other wingers. An unexpected yet exciting start to the month.

Leeds 2 - 0 LOSC Lille Adailton, Aleksic

A game I had high hopes for, and my guys truly delivered. This wasn't one of those close games where we scarped a win but a total domination from start to finish. I guess the age of my players is still showing, since they seemed to lack a bit of composure in front of goal, but all in all a very satisfying game.
Adailton scored a fine header in the first half, being denied thereafter despite some great display that truly showed why he's literally increasing in value with every appearance he makes.

Second half went much the same, Jaoa Paulo with one stunner of a free-kick from well over 40 yards out rattled of the crossbar far out of reach of an unmoving goalkeeper and he challenged the keeper twice more form some great free-kicks, but it was ultimately Aleksic that embarrassed the goalie by lobbing the ball easily into goal after a great one-touch pass from Adailton.

Leeds 0 - 2 Liverpool

Well, some games can be counted as losses even before they start. Sadly, this had turned out to be quite a winnable one after all. We were beaten on the break very early on, after some good pressure before Torres scored from what I still feel was a clear offside position (I know it's hard to tell from the ****** 3D engine, but after several reviews there was at least half a yard between him and my defenders).
All in all we played very well and it simply wasn't meant to happen. That and that we took way too many long shots from questionable positions left us shut out on this day.
Before the match, I would have take a 2-0 defeat no question, fearing a blow-out, but after the overall performance we displayed I'm a little disappointed, again....

Even pundits said "Leeds was unable to capitalize on their dominance" - well, next time, Reds, next time....

Leeds 1 - 2 Manchester United (League Cup) Adailton

We did play a lot better than the stats suggested, but the action happened mainly in midfield for us. The goal for us was quickly negated when Park scored directly from a corner. Fletcher sealed the deal for Man U in the second half after heaps of pressure brought on not only by Man U's skill but also by the fact that up to three of my players at a time were receiving treatment on the sidelines. I wonder if there's anything to the rumor that Ferguson's men go out to deliberately injure players...
Two of my players will be missing the coming weeks, the rest luckily recovered from the match.

The rest of the month will include fixtures against Portsmouth, Middlesborough and West Ham. All beatable teams and by this point in the season absolute must-wins if we are to remain in contention to stay in the league.

Don't you just hate it when real life with real people interferes with your virtual manager life and your little virtual people?
Anyway, I'll add to this once I have some more time.
