If you were England manager, who would you have picked for Euro 2012, and what would your tactics have been with England in the tournament?
I have given this a lot of thought and this (assuming the same players are injured as currently are) is what I came up with.
England Squad-Euro 2012:
Goalkeepers: Joe Hart, Rob Green, Scott Carson
Defenders: Glen Johnson, Micah Richards, Rio Ferdinand, John Terry, Gary Cahill, Joleon Lescott, Ashley Cole, Leighton Baines
Midfielders: Scott Parker, Gareth Barry, Frank Lampard, Steven Gerrard (c), James Milner, Theo Walcott, Aaron Lennon, Adam Johnson
Strikers: Wayne Rooney, Jermain Defoe, Peter Crouch, Daniel Sturridge
On standby: John Ruddy, Phil Jagielka, Michael Carrick, Ashley Young, Danny Welbeck
This is what the first-team line up/ tactics would be:
Joe Hart
Glen Johnson Gary Cahill John Terry Ashley Cole
Scott Parker
Theo Walcott Steven Gerrard Adam Johnson
Wayne Rooney
Jermain Defoe
I was very disappointed Adam Johnson wasn't in the squad, he's a natural left-footed winger who is a bit more reliable than Ashley Young. Kyle Walker would have been in my starting line-up if he was fit, Cahill is in alongside Terry because I assumed Ferdinand would refuse to play alongside him (and Terry and Lescott would never play together because they're both too slow-Terry would always play with a fast defender). As you can see, I've generally gone for more experience than youth.
I've kept in Richards and Crouch as well, I think Richards is very good and Crouch plays well for England. If Scott Parker was declared injured, then Michael Carrick would come into the squad in his place, though Barry would be in the starting line-up.
The line-up really revolves around Rooney and Gerrard (which would be a bit of a problem as we wouldn't have Rooney for the first two games). Rooney would be dropping back into midfield and would then be playing balls either out wide to the wingers who can cross or through to Jermain Defoe, who would be playing on the last man. Parker would have the responsibility of being the ball-winner in midfield, and would have little licence for creativity, while Gerrard would be allowed to get forward to support Rooney and Defoe as well as looking for opportunities to shoot from distance/ make runs to the edge of the box, he would have much more freedom. Johnson and Cole would be encouraged to get forward often and overlap on the wings to support the wingers.
What are your thoughts on my squad/ line-up? Better than Roy's? What do you agree/ disagree with?
What would your squad be and your tactics (in detail if poss)?
