After weeks of speculation, a new manager for Oldham Athletic has been found. Alex Mawer is the new man in charge at the club, a shock to the press who were expecting Jim Gannon to be installed. Mawer (38) is a former England international with a big reputation, earing himself 58 caps and scoring 4 goals for his country. But this doesn't mean anything to him now as he steps into management for the first time. Mawer was quick to issue a statement saying that he was overjoyed to be able to manage his hometown club and will do the very best he can for all the fans. Mawer also said that all the players at the club would have the chance to prove what they've got and earn their place in the team, but some people have to go to make funds available for new players to come in. It is understood that Martin Gray will remain as assistant manager for the time being, with Lee Duxbury also remaining First team coach. Goal-Keeping coach Andy Collett was less fortunate as he was let go by the club days before Mawer took over. Paul Gerrard is rumored to be in line for the job, with Mark Crossley;formerly of the club; second in the running. More to follow in the coming weeks...

Signings News

Alex Mawer has unveiled his first signings of the summer, all on loan, from premier league clubs.

Jose Baxter - Everton
Ryan Bertrand - Chelsea
Jean-Yves M'Voto - Sunderland

Mawer then spoke of more signings to come, suggesting that some players may be heading out of Boundary Park soon.

Pre-Season going well for Oldham

Three games into the season and Oldham are already doing quite well, despite losing one game, to the premier league side and local rivals, Manchester City. The results were:

Oldham 3-0 Stalybridge
Oldham 0-2 Man City
Oldham 3-1 Rochdale

Manager Alex Mawer is said to be delighted with these results but is demanding more for the start of the season against Notts County. Mawer also added that he may dip his toes into the transfer market again before the County game.

Notts a good start ...
Oldham 0 - 1 - Notts County

It wasn't a good start for the boys in blue but its far from the end. Oldham lost 1-0 to Notts County in the first game of the season and Manager Alex Mawer is said to be pleased with the performance despite losing. He claimed that the County goal should never have been awarded after ex-Oldham player Lee Hughes wasn't seen to be miles offside by the linesman. Mawer's comments are now under review from the FA.

Another player comes into Boundary Park

The Oldham fans must have been shocked when they heard that Graham Kavanagh was signing for the club. Well thats what has happened today, in a deal reportedly worth up to £50,000 with added extras. Kavanagh spent many years at Cardiff but now has signed for Oldham from Carlisle, ironically Oldham play them in the cup in the coming week.

Oldham Through
Oldham 4 - 1 Carlisle

Alex Mawer must have been ecstatic with his sides recent performance. They beat a Carlisle side who came into the game strong favorites. New signing, Graham Kavanagh didn't feature though, as according to assistant manager Martin Gray, Graham thought it would be better for him to settle into the side first than rushing right into it. The draw for the second round was made today and Oldham will play Nottingham Forest, a repeat fixture of the 1989-1990 final where Forest came out 1-0 winners.

Cruise Control
Charlton 0 - 2 Oldham

Oldham must have thought they were on top of the world on Saturday night after a big win away at Charlton, but Alex Mawer doesn't want to get too carried away, he said "Yes this is a massive win for the team and on the back on a league cup hammering of Carlisle confidence in the squad is very high, but i will not get carried away, it isn't a 2 game season, theres still 44 games to go and we have to make it over those 44 hurdles before reaching the finishing line."

Walking in a Mawer wonderland ...
Oldham 2 - 1 Exeter

Oldham recorded their third victory in a row at home to Exeter. They did this through Jon Worthington and Graham Kavanagh who were both on the score sheet for the boys in blue. Alex Mawer again failed to get carried away with the result.

Carling Cup F**k Up
Notts Forest 2 - 0 Oldham

The headline says it all, Oldham were on their way to a fifth victory in a row coming into this game, but now have lost their run. Alex Mawer said that this would be a knock of confidence in the team but its only the cup and we should be concentrating on promotion.

Whats going on?
MK Dons 4 - 0 Oldham

After the cup defeat in the week, Oldham were looking to bounce back with a win, but they never looked like doing that today and were battered because of this. Alex Mawer said that for the next game against Huddersfield there would be some changes in the squad. He wouldnt blame one player for the loss but said its the teams fault we lost, along with me the manager and also all the backroom staff, we just were not fully prepared for this.

Huddersfield win battle of the roses
Oldham 0 - 4 Huddersfield

Huddersfield roared to victory and to the top of the league as they put Oldham down to their third defeat in a row. Manager of Oldham, Alex Mawer said that the situation isn't brilliant but it is fixable, Huddersfield were just the better team today and i don't think anyone can question that they're going to be up there at the end of the season.

The run goes on ...
Colchester 2 - 0 Oldham

Oldham have lost again! and Manager Alex Mawer must be feeling the pressure from the fans as now they have lost 4 in a row, Mawer refused to comment after the game, but assistant Martin Gray gave us a one world summary of the match - Terrible!

F**K SAKE!
Oldham 0 - 1 Tranmere

The run of losses is just getting worse for Oldham, and another one to add onto it now, not looking good for the boys in blue. The board have pledged their confidence in Alex Mawer and said they are 100% behind him at the this difficult time.

The blues are going ...
Bristol R 4 - 0 Oldham

...Down, according to the press after the big defeat to Bristol Rovers. Alex Mawer said he will not comment on any matters until Oldham win.

Point on the board!
Oldham 0 - 0 Brighton

Oldham finally have reached 10 points in the league after staying on nine for the last 6 games, Manager Alex Mawer still refused to comment as his side did not win.

---------- Post added at 11:40 AM ---------- Previous post was at 11:33 AM ----------

Crisis Club
Southampton 3 - 0 Oldham

The run without scoring or even winning goes on. And fears at the club were added to this week when their were rumours that the club would be entering administration anytime soon, this wouldn't be good as the 10 points earned would be wiped out and the club would be back down to zero and back down to the bottom of the league. :O

4 of the best for Oldham
Rochdale 0 - 4 Oldham

Oldham have finally won! Alex Mawer finally commented on the game for us saying that his side were brilliant today and now they want to push on from there, another local derby awaits Oldham next when they visit Bury at Gigg Lane in the week,
