I'm finding the new match engine a struggle. Playing as Roma and so far have been sack 5 times (which I have never been in any of the FM Series) and are sat bottom of the league with 0 points, scored 2 and conceded 10. Fingers crossed this will help.

It's the bank loans that are killing WHU's not so deep pockets. Try cutting wages (ie fringe players), move any spare transfer money over the wages.
I used Niall's West Ham Guide in FM11. It had a very helpful link with tip on making a profit which i'm still using with my current FM12 AS Roma save.
From Raikan's list I can recommend:
Rafael Toloi - Goias - normally around £4m
Darnel Situ - RC Lens - £1.5m - £2n
Raphael Varana - RC Lens - £6m
I have had all three in my West Ham saves and all been class players
