4-3-3 Pressure Is On

I'll be honest, the first season in the Championship didn't quite go the way I expected it to.

The board expectations were to attempt to avoid relegation, and the season preview predictions were that Wrexham would finish 18th.

Well, this season Wrexham finished 3rd from bottom in the league... in terms of wage expenditure! £8.21m spent on wages, compared to Southampton topping the wage expenditure league with £48.91m! Only MK Dons and Fleetwood spent less, £7.31m and £4.98m respectively.

Despite the low wage expenditure, yet again this Wrexham team, with a completely untouched tactic from the start of Season 1, have exceeded all expectations AND WON PROMOTION TO THE PREMIER LEAGUE VIA THE PLAYOFFS!

At one point in the league, we did reach 1st place, but it was short-lived and we never returned the the summit. We did get one staggering result, which I cannot explain, when we beat Luton, with all 11 men on the pitch, 12-0 at home.

We led the way with goals scored yet again, with 106 goals scored. Admittedly we are conceding more than I would like, with 75 goals conceded in the league's 46 games putting us the 2nd worst in the league. The 5 goals conceded during the playoffs then makes it the worst in the league overall.

However, I think considering the money spent on the team, £2.4m spent and £3.4m received, and in such a competitive league, the results are fairly outstanding regardless of the goals conceded.

Colm Whelan was our top goalscorer in the league, contributing 20 goals and finishing joint 4th in the league's top goalscorers. An honourable mention has to go to the ever reliable Paul Mullin, who contributed 14 goals and 13 assists in 46 appearances, with a steady average rating of 7.03 - not bad for a player who's now 31 and been with us since the Vanarama National League.

(the two mid-season friendlies against West Ham and Arsenal were arranged last minute after I sent most of my 1st team players on a 1 week rest during an international break and I thought I'd bring in some revenue!)

Season 3 has now finished, and yet again Wrexham have run away with the league, despite the board expectations being to avoid relegation, and pre-season predictions having Wrexham finishing 11th place.

In doing so, Wrexham also beat QPR's League One goalscoring record previously set at 111 goals, by scoring 113 goals.

Wrexham also had a great run in the FA Cup, partly in thanks to the luck of the draw, in reaching the Quarter Finals, losing to Southampton narrowly in a 1-0 defeat away from home.

Paul Mullin led the way in the goalscoring as the top goalscorer in League One, with 28 goals in the league in 37 appearances, and 36 goals in 51 appearances in all competitions. He wasn't the only one with impressive goalscoring stats this season though; Colm Whelan scored 24 goals in the league in 41 appearances, and 34 goals in 55 appearances.
