2014 World Cup thread

Essentially, theres a law against that. I can't quite remember what it's called - and I should because I learnt it only a couple of months ago - but essentially it's protecting people from prejudice, because planting a giant doctored image on your front/back page with a big headline about it and a tiny explanatory comment below can be massively damaging to someone's reputation if the person who sees it doesn't read the paper and instead just catches a glance. And it's a good law; my dad knows hardly anything about football, but he does pick up bits and pieces. He'd be exactly the kind of person to notice the headline and picture but not be bothered to look at the context. And that's why this kind of behaviour shouldn't be - and generally isn't - allowed. Wouldn't be surprised if DM get investigated for this.

Libel? Although it's not really libel, because Suarez did actually bite someone. The Mail have just exaggerated it. I'm sure they could still get in trouble for that. Of course, libel might not be the law you're thinking of. Just thought I'd try to jog your brain!

Not quite, but you're on the right track. It's to do with libel laws, but more to do with defamation as a whole. It's basically the notion of defaming someone by non-deliberate libel. It's actually a pretty strict law; BBC got a slap on the wrist for displaying a helicopter flying from a certain squadron when reporting on mechanic-led mechanical problems, the implication being that the helicopter they were displaying was from the same squadron as the one having problems. When you consider Ofcom isn't quite as strict as the newspaper guidelines on stuff like this, you can see why I'm rather interested in how this turns out for the Mail.

That's ******* hilarious. At this point Liverpool must be ecstatic: everyone already hated Suarez so any loss in his reputation is irrelevant, plus fewer people will want him, PLUS if someone does want him his value will be even higher!

Lol

Except if Suarez thought he was being 'persecuted' by the media before, he has no idea what's in store for him when he returns to England

He has bit someone before and been charge with racism, i dont think Suarez will bother what the media say. They have been at it for the past year and all that's happened is Suarez has become one of the best strikers in the world and finished top goalscorer in the Premier League

It obviously doesn't affect him

And what would that be, exactly? He bit some Italians. Nobody will care after a week.

Its not like this was the first stunt Suarez pulls during international games. Unless he does it in the Premier League or to English player, it will blow over.

This is getting beyond boring now.... can we not talk about the World Cup? Suarez won't be a part of it anymore so technically it's off topic.

If a person isn't affected by the fact that they are called a racist and depicted as a abnormal human being who needs help by the media then I honestly feel sorry for them

More to do with the fact that he had a needless go at the English media saying how it's their 'persecution' that motivated him to knock England out of the World Cup despite the fact that the very media voted him best player in the EPL. Then a few days later, he gets back to his old tricks. I think it will be a while before this is over in England at least ...

Prandelli resigned from Italy job, shame it has to happen in circumstances like this.

Prandelli offers resignation, Del Bosque does similar and Roy Hodgson? well...

Its not as if it has been the worst performance ever by an England side at the World Cup

They would have been sacked anyways IMO.

Whereas Hodgson got the backing of FA for whatever reasons. It's going to get even uglier for England if they don't act now. Also England don't have any good managers so again they should go back to hiring foreigners.

They would have, but at least they came out and said it wasn't good enough and are leaving

Hodgson is a lovely bloke, who wont speak out on many occasions. Perfect for the FA

I dont think he will be in charge come 2016. **** may of backed him but the FA is a committee not one man and one man doesn't make the decisions. I think hodgson would of been ok until he started saying 0-0 draws with Costa Rica were fantastic performances. Now the press and media have it in for him big time and looking at Roy im not sure he can take much more.

Over reaction about Hodgson. If some of you are too young to remember we have been here before. Euro 88. We finished bottom of the group with 0 points below the Republic of Ireland. The outcry was that Bobby Robsons tactics were too outdated. He favoured players who were more of a reputation and was pillorised in the press and fans as usual threw hissy fits that he was the manager and he should be sacked. Two years later he took us to a World Cup semi-final and we only failed to make the final from penalties. Robson was hailed a national treasure. Knee jerking gets you no where.

Yeah what they did was very good especially Del Bosque who won world cup and Euro. He could have used this one as just a blip and asked for more time.

Say whatever about Redknapp, IMO he would have been better choice than Hodgson as at least his teams play some decent football. But he has too many favorite players that will make him pick them no matter what.

Completely different from supporting a team he has managed to watching it from an outsider. He is a one trick pony. We had major collapses in form under him in his last two seasons from February to April. For me it's get Martinez in if Hodgson does go.
