442 THE LIGHTBULB - POSSESSION=CCC=GOALS=WINS=TITLES!!!

History

this tactic started life as a standard 442, after playing with roles and
positions i found that the wingers with the role they have the ME can't
deal with it, so i had an attacking base, defensively the tactic was OK
but i love symmetry and didnt like the way in which the team went from
attacking to defensive phase, seemed slow and in certain circumstances
non existant with the opposition able to calve through the team with ease
so i had amore narrow approach in mind with more closing from the defensive
minded central mid now in a half back role, allowing the rest of the team
more time to fall back in, might only be a couple of seconds but it makes
a world of difference. and so the tactic was born!!!
The name for the tactic came from 2 different aspects 1. the moment i
realised that the ME couldnt deal with the inverted playmakers and
2. it looks like a lightbulb (ish)

*** disclaimer ***
all screen shots are not from 2015-2016 season, i am currently doing a
english only challenge and the screen shots are from the 2017-2019 which
is where i won promotion to the premier league and my first season in the
prem, the team is consideredvery weak for the standard of the league.
wanted to get this tacticvout there before i forget and FM 2017 will
be here.

the tactic

this takes an unusual shape on face value but i will explain that in an
attacking phase the shape turns into a 433 with agressive wing backs with
the wingers tucking into and holding the CM position dictating the pace
and able to put in the WB or the ST or the on rushing CM whilst in the
defensive phase the tactic is a 442 with high pressing and is very hard
to break down and get around.

the key to the tactic is the wingers and the WB's from the attacking
sense and defensively the half back not only manipulates the CBs to move
wider but also charge anything down and allow the other attacking players
to fall in to the 442 shape ready to defend, 2 strikers enables a quick
release counter and with the F9 they work more space than traditional
strikers helping the team join in with the attack creating more chances.

perfered player types

GK - the best shot stopper you can get your hands on, they are set to
pass to CB's so dont worry about distribution.

CB - the quicker the better, and tall with a good jumping reach. these
guys cover more ground than traditional CBs, dont worry about the ball
playing aspect, they will keep it simple its more for movement as with
BPD's they with offer for the short pass rather than be stuck in
position and leave a player under pressure no backward option.

HB - the key to the defensive phase, majority of the reason for the role
is automatic but for his specific role he is a carbon copy of the CBs
as quick and tall and good in the air are essential just an all round
bully to harras the opponents as soon as possession is lost.

WB - pace is everything, even if not technically or mentally great,
they will cover the most ground of any of the players in this team so
stamina and work rate are key too, as mentioned above technicals and
mentals are not essential but if you can get both that is great

CM - this guy gets everywhere, arrives on the wing and/or in the box
for an extra body in there to give a CB something else to think about,
stamina, work rate and off the ball are key here, if long shots are
strong then take off the player instruction shoot less often.
generally speaking this guy needs to be an all rounder.

WAP - traditional advanced playmaker here, great off the ball,
first touch and passing are essential, pace and dribbling are a bonus,
this guy will always be available for a pass and needs to be able to pick
a pass either through the defensive line or spread out to the opposite
wing to switch the play where the space would be.

ST - this one is down to personal preferance i call them the quick target
man but can be called a tall poacher, attribute wise i always go for
the target man essentials, good in the air and first touch and finishing
qualities but ensure that they are quick, this will increase their
chances of beating an apponent to the ball when it comes in the box,
the reason for the target man style player is that they will recieve the
ball under pressure so need to get the ball in and get the ball out to a
supporting player either CM WAP or WB depending on the phase of play.

team instructions

the team is set to be compact when defending but expansive in attack,
slow pace for better ball retention coupled with retain possession also
this tends for the players to make better decisions on the ball as
opposed to higher tempos, when the ball is lost the team will fall in
to the 442 shape with the player closest to the ball close the player
down and stop them from advancing only allowing for a pass back to GK
or CB at this point it becomes very hard to break us down. passing is
left as mixed as individual instructions are set for each player as
this works better as some players need to have freedom to spray the ball.
exploiting the middle is one of the most contradictory instructions as
most of the play comes from the wider players but if set to the wings
for the focus the WBs run into too many problems and the WAPs dont
drift in and sit enough venturing too far wide.

that is it done, if you have stuck with me this far, thank you i tend to
ramble... ALOT!!! other general housekeeping, training, train each player
in the role they are supposed to be playing apart from the strikers,
train them as shadow strikers as this is how i want them to play.
team training - match tactics on full with team cohesion until fluid
then defend set pieces and attacking at half and half ish.

the first post will have all the screen shots of players i have,
the tactic and some games match stats and results from when i finished
tweeking the tactic from the english only challenge

all done here enjoy the tactic and let me know how you get on!!!

Loving the feed back. I have right back taking right corner and left back taking left corner. The aim is to get the ball to the striker on the edge of the box for a small dribble and shot. Scores 10-15 per season this way. Sometimes this tactic seems to have the case of being FMed nothing really you can do at that point
