A Mini Journeyman Series - UK & Ireland

Shame you didn't go up, but looking at the impressive signings you've made, might be better to have a stronger squad when you do go up!

I'm loving this save so far and going into my 3rd season this squad is definitely the most exciting I've had! The fact I have two strikers that scored 60+ goals between them in this division last season makes me wonder whether I need to look at a different formation to incorporate them both into the starting 11....decisions, decisions!! I will probably have a play around in pre season to see what works best

July 2019

My first action of July was to add another loanee to the squad. After having a look at Blackburn's squad, I went in for central midfielder, George Wilson, and I'm pleased that the 18 year old has agreed to join us on loan for the season! He's a solid player with an excellent work rate, who is sure to get plenty of games for us this year!

The bookies predictions suggest this could be the most competitive league season I've managed in yet! With Billericay down as favourites for the title again, and relegated Whitehawk back in the division, I expect them both to be up there at the end of the season! We are predicted to finish in the playoffs again, with the likes of Hereford, Woking and Welling all expected to be involved in proceedings at the top end of the table! Eastbourne Boro find themselves back at this level again after an immediate promotion, but are expected to struggle alongside last year's surprise package, Poole!

View attachment 37333

After his showing in the league last year, Bradley Reid is up there as one of this season's favourites to finish top goalscorer!

View attachment 37332

Pre season has gone better than expected so far, with the win against Blackburn standing out and managing a draw against Wigan as well!

View attachment 37331

[FONT=&quot]But it wasn't all plain sailing as Bradley Reid and Mark Onyemah will both miss the first couple of weeks of competitive football after picking up injuries during pre season!

August 2019

Our final pre season friendly ends in another win! However, we definitely weren't at our best, having to come from behind to beat lower league side, Bishop's Stortford.

View attachment 37212

The season preview confirms the bookies predictions and shows us the media dream 11! For the first time as a manager, I have a player who makes that 11 in 18 year old loanee George Wilson! Alongside Wilson, there is a whole mix of players from different teams, again confirming that this could be the most competitive season I've managed in. Whitehawk, Billericay, Woking, Brackley, Welling and Havant & Waterlooville are all represented in the dream 11!

View attachment 37211

Despite being 34 years old now, I still believe Elliott Bradbrook is the best man for the captain's job and he keeps the armband for another season!

View attachment 37210

The first game of the season, will mark my 100th game in management! Hopefully, the lads can help me celebrate the occasion with 3 points!

View attachment 37209

It's the day of the first game of the season, so the board send over their expectations for the upcoming season! Playoffs again in the league and a couple of mini cup runs would again be highly appreciated.

My 100th game in management didn't exactly go to plan as we lose on the opening day of the season! This was never going to be an easy game, but I'm disappointed to kick things off with a defeat. I feel for Jack Compton being credited with an own goal...he was standing in the wall for a free kick and the ball hit him on the way through....a bit harsh to give an OG!

Season ticket sales continue to rise, even if only by a little bit!

That's more like it!! We came out the traps fast and by half time were 4-0 up and it was game over! We definitely took it easier in the second half, but we held the scoreline well and kept the all important clean sheet!

Formation: 4-1-2-3 Wide
Lineup: Stedman, Clinton (Miller 63), Vint, Bonner, Pritchatt, Wilson, Bradbrook (Simpson 81), Durojaiye, Della Verde, Compton, Issa (Akinwande 72)

View attachment 37203

Kettering are a good side, so this presented us with another tough away game! But we managed to grab the win with a late, late goal from sub, Akinwande. Goalkeeper, Stedman, played a massive role in the result, when he pulled off a fantastic double save in the 89th minute to keep the scores level!

17 year old, Diquan Miller came off the bench to make his debut for the club against Kettering. We are thin on the ground for full backs at the moment and there is a good chance the youngster may get some more game time until we bring another in.

Tariq Issa bangs in his 4th goal in 3 games starting up front as a striker...is he going to push Reid and Akinwande for their spots in the team this season?! Not if Akinwande has anything to do about it as he came off the bench to score for the 2nd game in a row as well! Another good solid home win though and that makes it 3 on the bounce!

Tuesday 27th August 2019 (19:45)

Poole had started the season with 4 straight losses and the bookies look spot on in predicting that they will struggle this year! And we piled on the misery for their fans with a comfortable win here as we maintain our 100% start at home! Centre back, Kyle Clinton, popped up with a hat trick and already has 4 this season!!

Femi Akinwande picked up a twisted ankle injury in the game against Poole and will now miss 5 weeks of action!

We ended the month with another good win and our 3rd straight clean sheet and my defence is looking strong! The team are playing some excellent football at the moment and I hope we can keep it up this year. The only negative was the late sending off of captain, Elliott Bradbrook, who will now miss the next game through suspension.

Despite losing our first game of the season, we went on a 5 match winning streak immediately after and it sees us top the table at the end of August, just as we did last year! We've scored an inredible 19 goals in our opening 6 games!! Poole are still to get off the mark and prop up the rest of the table.

I think this is the first time in my management career that I've given a centre back the player of the month award. But Kyle Clinton is fully deserved of the acolade this month as he has been in wonderful form and despite being a centre back, has evem contributed with 4 goals and an assist! He's also been a huge part of the excellent defensive record and a massive contribution to our current run of 3 straight clean sheets.

Four games coming up next month and they all look like winnable ones, so hopefully we can keep this winning streak going for a little longer!

I don't know if it's the manager of the month curse or the fact that Elliott Bradbrook was missing through suspension, but we suffered a surprising loss here to a weak side. We just weren't at the races for majority of the game and struggled to create any decent chances! Oxford didn't exactly look great but they took advantage of the fact we were so poor!

We'll take on lower league minnows, Bideford, in the 2nd qualifying round of the FA Cup.

I'm telling ya that when Elliott Bradbrook doesn't play, we don't win!! We played better than we did in the last game against Oxford, but still managed to find ourselves on the end of a disappointing defeat!

Ben Nunn, who was here on loan and was our most predominant right back last season, has now joined the club on a permanent deal! I tried to sign him on a free when he was released by Dag & Red in the Summer, but his wage demands were too high. Well, a couple of months into the season and still being on the free agent list, has been enough for him to lower his demands and is now affordable for us, so I've brought him in! He chose to join us instead of Whitehawk who'd also offered him a contract!

18 year old midfielder, Harry Clarke, is a product of the Arsenal youth system who was released by the club in the Summer. When the opportunity was presented to sign him up, I took it very quickly as I immediately identified the youngster as someone who could improve our squad! At only £140 per week wages, he is a cheap addition as well and someone who could really improve a lot over the next couple of years!

******* gutted to concede with the final kick of the game to share the points! Yes, Welling were the better side, especially as we had to play the last 10 minutes or so with 10 men following an injury when I'd made all 3 subs already, but it's still gutting to concede so late on!!

This really was a game of two halves. We were well on top in the first 45 minutes and found ourselves 2-0 up by the break! Everything was looking rosy, but the inevitable increased pressure came from our higher league opponents in the 2nd half and they clawed the 2 goals back to take it to a replay! Disappointing to have thrown a 2-0 lead, but this team are a well established National League side, so it's not a bad result on the face of it!

I was forced to make several changes for the replay, with only 3 days between games, so Pritchatt, Noble, Bradbrook and Clarke all came into the starting lineup! We knew it would be tough with Sutton having the home advantage in the replay and they were a much more organised outfit on home soil. Wealdstone are possibly the most negative side I've come up against in 2 and a half seasons! They literally look like they're set up for a draw from the outset, with a back 4 and 2 DMs and only 1 striker. They have 10 men behind the ball at all times! I'm really annoyed we haven't beaten them here because it proves their negativity worked for them today! Upset? Maybe! Bitter, Very......Wankers!

Once we got that defeat to Billericay out the way, it wasn't a bad month for us and we're now on a 3 game unbeaten streak! We remain 4th in the table, but more importantly, that gap to the top has closed to only 5 points now as Whitehawk only won 1 league game this month! Things are extremely tight in the entire top half though, with only 10 points seperating 1st to 11th! At the other end, it already looks like 4 teams will be battling it out for safety against the 3 relegation places!

I said when this draw was made that I felt it was a winnable tie for us, and we've only gone and done it! We finish the month and the year on a high with a good away victory! The switch up on 40 minutes to a 4-2-2-2 Wide changed the complexity of the game and we were in control from that moment on! It just looked like a matter of how many we'd score!

So as we move into January and the year 2020, we sit 5th in the table with 38 points! Slightly worrying that we don't seem to have taken a step forward as this time last year, we'd played one less game and sat 3rd with 40 points!

Player of the Month
Jamie Fuller

View attachment 36860

The 18 year old that I have brought through the club's youth system wins his first player of the month award! Yes he's lucky that nobody really stood out this month, but Fuller gets it for his steady improvement game by game as well! He has stepped up his performance in each game this month, finally ending the month with his best game of the season against St Albans.

The new year kicks off with 4 league games and our FA Cup encounter with Derby County! It will be a good experience for these lads to play at Pride Park, and although we didn't draw a big Premiership side, Derby are still a big club with an impressive stadium! In the league, we should be picking up a decent amount of points this month with the level of opposition lined up!

I decided to roll with the 4-2-2-2 wide formation that had been so strong for us in the 2nd half against St Albans. Quite simply, it didn't work and we defended like a bunch of wankers....so I switched back in the 2nd half! But the damage was already done and after conceding another couple, it ended up being a slightly embarassing result in the end! Not exactly the way I wanted to kick off the New Year, but I suppose it can only get better!

For the first time in my career, I'm linked with another job! And it's from a club in the National League, Eastleigh! It would represent a step up the ladder for me, and it looks like we are playing for playoffs at best with Dartford again, so I don't say anything to discourage the rumours!

View attachment 36857

Apparently, I've done enough in my time with Dartford to get the fans on board!

Call me mad but I decided to give the 4-2-2-2 another go and by complete contract to the Kettering game, we kept a clean sheet and took all 3 points!

Young midfielder, Harry Clarke, will miss the next couple of weeks through injury! Unfortunately for him, he'll miss out on the big game against Derby in the cup!

View attachment 36854

As well as my own fans wanting me to stay at Dartford, it seems the Eastleigh fans are keen on the idea of me taking over there as well! Well, this is all very nice for the ego if I do say so myself!

As expected, we were thumped by the Championship side! It was to be expected and I'm just pleased to have led the team this far and given these lads an experience of playing at a stadium like Pride Park! And I'm over the moon that we managed to grab a goal there as well!

Even though we didn't have the home tie, the bank balance has taken a considerable boost through our FA Cup run this year!

With the money from the FA Cup, I asked the board to invest it back into the club in the form of junior coaching and youth recruitment!

The fans wanted it, the media wanted it, but apparently the Eastleigh board didn't want it as they hire Alan Smith as manager without giving Ernie Allan even a second glance!

This happens far too often for us! We string together 2 or 3 wins and then go and turn in an absolute shocker of a performance against a **** side and drop points!

Femi Akinwande is the latest player to pick up an injury and will be out of action until around mid March.

I'm now qualified to National B License standard.....the big clubs will soon be knocking on Ernie Allan's door for sure right?!

View attachment 36844

It's been an indifferent month in the league with a couple of wins, a draw and a loss! It leaves us right in the playoff mix in 6th place with 15 games remaining! It's too early to right us off for a late challenge for the title, but being completely realistic we're aiming for top 3 right now to avoid the extra playoff game.

Having useless shitsters in goal is really costing us at the moment! We were by far the better side here and yet they have two half decent attempts on goal and they go in! Yea, it's no excuse for us not taking our own chances but when you go into every game feeling like you'll concede a couple, that's gotta mess with the confidence of the whole team!

We scraped past struggling Oxford by the skin of our teeth!

Being linked with the Eastleigh job last month has given me itchy feet! So I've casually kept an eye on the job market, but have decided that as I'm not desperate to leave I will only apply for jobs that represent a step up with clubs that might realistically look at me! The first one that has come up since I've been looking is Grimsby - I chucked in an application and they immediately came back and offered me the chance to interview for the job!

With H&W having a man sent off in only the 2nd minute, it made our job a **** of a lot easier! We should have won by a lot more than the one goal, but a win's a win and we played well so I can't complain!

So it looks like my February update will be split into two parts.....because my time with Dartford has come to an end! Grimsby came back to me with a job offer and it gives me the opportunity to step up a league and a pay rise to £700 per week! I'm slowly closing in on that £1000 mark!

View attachment 36814

My next post will be my introduction to Grimsby Town, but before we go, let's have a look at my record at Dartford. Not a bad one to be fair, 113 games in charge and I won more than half of them!

View attachment 36813

I led the side to back to back playoffs (when it looked a really tough ask in my first year) and as I leave, it looks like the club is almost nailed on to make the playoffs again this season! I hope the manager they bring in can see them over the line!

Grimsby

Grimsby Town

I've arrived in Grimsby! Dartford bag £9,000 compensation for me which ain't too sad considering it beats the clubs record transfer fee!

View attachment 36811

As the chairman sends me a rundown of Grimsby's history, it's clear to see that this is the biggest club I have worked for so far! They have 2 Championship trophies in the cabinet, albeit the last one being won in 1934!

View attachment 36810

The club are worth over £800k and have a regional reputation in England. The facilities are pretty basic all round! The club have a whole host of local rivals as well, although they are all playing their football higher up the pyramid than us! But the best thing about managing Grimsby....their sponsor....I've been told I'm allowed as many free fish fingers as I like!

View attachment 36809

The stadium, Blundell Park, is also double the size of my previous two clubs, with a capacity of over 9,000 seats!

Large

The squad seems big enough to compete, although the first thing I notice is that I have a distinct lack of players rated higher than 3 stars by my assistant! There is also a small African contingent in my squad, with 3 players representing Cameroon, Nigeria and Ivory Coast.

View attachment 36808

My 3 best players that I'll be attempting to build the team around are winger Siriki Dembele, on loan striker Jordan McEneff, and another loanee, Wayne Gilbert!

View attachment 36805

It's no surprise that the previous manager was sacked. Looking back over the last few months games, it's been a pretty dreadful run for Grimsby! Only 1 league win in their last 12 games! On the plus side, we are still in the FA Trophy and my 3rd game in charge will be the next round fixture against FC Halifax!

View attachment 36804

Despite the **** poor recent form, Grimsby had a decent start to the campaign and it means they do still sit 8th in the table with a shot at making the playoffs this year! The league title is well out of reach though and looks to be a two horse race between Ebbsfleet and Wrexham!

View attachment 36803

Two of my players do sit in the current top 3 for average ratings in the league this season though!

View attachment 36802

My next update will be February part 2 as I have 3 games to ease me into life at Grimsby! Well, hopefully ease me in anyway!

Congrats on your new role, fingers crossed you can galvanise the squad for the playoff push

Despite being on top for the entire game, we struggled to make a breakthrough and will now have to play a replay. That's an extra game we could have done without!

Incredibly, this was our 8th match this month and the legs must be getting tired on the lads! And it showed here as I suffer my first loss as Grimsby manager. However, there's no shame in it, with us being away from home against the side currently 4th in the league. All I am worried about is will this give Gateshead a psychological edge if we meet them in the playoffs?

With 5 games remaining, we sit 6th and 4 points clear in the playoff spots. I reckon 3 more wins guarantees us a top 7 finish! At the bottom, Maidenhead are all but gone from the division, but the relegation battle above that is coming right down to the wire with a whole host of teams involved!

Dembele started the month coming back from a small injury and as he got stronger throughout the month, his performances got better and better! He is such a huge part of this team and at the moment, I have a worry we may lose him as he won't sign a new contract right now, with his expiring at the end of the season!

The schedule stays pretty busy for the first half of next month, with 4 more games coming pretty quickly. However, after the 18th, we have a good 2 week break and I'm hoping we will have tied up a playoff spot by then so that we can use that time to prepare physically and mentally!
