"Good evening Ladies and Gentlemen. Members of the press. I thank you all for coming here today.
As many of you already know, we have parted ways with Tata Martino and wish to take this opportunity
to thank Tata for all his time and efforts while wishing him the best of luck in his professional career."

"When I took the presidency in January, I did not think that I would be entering my first full season
on the back of a trophy-less campaign. Los Culés are a club built on the principles of entertaining,
attacking and winning football. We, as a club will accept nothing less than complete perfection in every
competition we field a team in. These are the standards our fans hold us to, and these are the standards we
hold ourselves to."

"We argued and debated for weeks over this decision. Who would be our next manager?
We agreed that they should have a few core philosophies."
Passion, Loyalty, and an understanding of what La Masia means to us.

"which is why I'd like to introduce to you, the next Manager of F.C. Barcelona"

"Hello. for anyone who doesn't know, I'm Carels"

"It was a tough decision to retire but I it never felt quite right when I came back. I
needed surgery on my knee and well, at 35, i can't just walk it off anymore."

"I can originally entered talks with Josep Maria Bartomeu about becoming Assistant Director of Football to Andoni Zubizarreta. When Tata announced he was leaving the club, Joesp asked me If I wanted to take
over."

"I initially declined the offer. I was sincerely flattered but I felt hat the job was too big for me. I doubted
my ability to do the work and deliver the results I had personally experienced at this club."

6 La Liga Titles
2 Copa del Reys
6 Supercopa de España
3 UEFA Champions Leagues
2 UEFA Suppercups
and 2 FIFA Clubs World Championships.

"I've won 21 trophies with this club, I've worked under some of the worlds best managers.
I've played with some of the World best players and I've won some of the world best competitions."

"Josep Maria told me he wants to build a dynasty. He wants someone who knows this club, knows what it takes to make it at this club, someone who knows how to take at as La Masia, someone who bleeds for this club and will fight for this club, and he can think of no one better qualified to lead this club, than me. I couldn't say no after hearing that."

"Any Questions?"

"Ah yes, David Johnson; Sky Sports News. Congratulations on being appointed as Barcelona Manger.

Do you have any transfer targets in mind?"

"No... We have one of the best playing squads in Europe.
Call me biased but I trained with these guys, I have faith in them"

"I have to ask, are you perusing Luis Suarez?"

"Luis Suarez is a fantastic player and one I'd very much
had loved the opportunity to have played with. But no, we
cannot afford him. Unless you have a loan of 80 Million Euro
We won't be putting in a bid for him."

"Thank you again, and I hope to continue the proud traditions of this great club"

A trip to the training ground was my first call of duty. I've been here for 19 years but
this will be the first time I'll arrive at the ground as part of the coaching staff. This will serve two
purposes.

  • [*=center]To have a critical look at my teammates and decide on my XI
[*=center]To evaluate my backroom staff and build a coaching team.

I already knew exactly how I wanted the guys to set up. It's roughly the same tactical vision put in
place by Frank Rijkaard all those years ago, and then perfected by Pep after him.

I met the players and we had a pit of a joke. I grew up with most of these lads but I knew they respected me.
Even when I was a player I was a tough nut to deal with. We could be 4-0 down with 2 minutes to go and
I'd still push us forward to grab a win. Odds are for the bookies, I just want to play football and until the final whistle goes, anything is possible.

These are the qualities and discipline I want to instill and cultivate.

I told the lads to do a few quick drills and left the session to my assistant Airto Olmo.

The physio department was my next destination. I myself had spent plenty of time with the medical department.
Juanjo Brau and Ricard Pruna were two of the best physios I've ever worked with. Consummate professions with great vision and motivation. I would work closely with them to keep the spirits of the injured players high.
My being seen in the Physios room will be a boost to moral and it shows them that I haven't forgotten about them, and that I care about them returning to the club.

While I've had the current staff getting the players back to full fitness, I was busy contacting
world class coaches around Europe. The advantage of being a UEFA Champions League and
FIFA World cup winner was that I've gotten to know some fantastic coaches over the years.

Some asked me how I felt about taking other clubs coaches and I just replied with "I'm just offering them
a job, they don't have to take it."

Barcelona Manager Carels Pyuol today announced that the club's pre-season tour would take place in Asia.
The club will play 3 fixtures in Australia before flying to India, where they will play another 3 fixtures.
The 2nd leg of the tour will see Barcelona play 1 fixture in Uzbekistan, Turkey and Saudi Arabia

Puyol:
"Yup, we're going to Australia. We're due to fly out on Friday and our first fixture is
in Melbourne"

Journalist:
"Why Aisia?"

Puyol:
"We have a large fan-base in India and Australia which is why we've decided to
travel there this summer. We are a global brand with million of followers worldwide
and it's important that we make the journey to show them that they are included."

"These games will give me a chance to test out players in different positions, see who's on form and
who needs extra time on the training pitch. These aren't small games to us, these are as important as a
Champions League final to me since you can't get there without knowing what you have to work with"

Journalist:
"Rumors are circulating in England that Barcelona have tabled an offer for Chelsea's
Cesar Azpilicueta. Is there any truth to these rumors and if so, where do you see him fitting in?"

View attachment 368128

Puyol:
"There's not much I can say here really. Azpilicueta is a great player, current Spanish international and I've had the plessure of playing with him myself so I know what kind of quality he has. We have tabled a bid but we are only in the early stages of negotiations. We may press on or we may look for other targets, I don't want to speculate at this early stage."

Journalist:
"What about Jonathan dos Santos and Ibrahim Afellay? We've also heard from Paris-Saint Germaine who say
they're discussing personal terms with Marc Bartra. Is there any truth in this?

Puyol:
"Afellay has made good progress to come back from his injury but he needed a full season of
first team football to get back to where he needs to be. He's agreed terms with Udinese and will
spend a year in Italy.

"Dos Santos is a decent player, a product of La Masia but he's somewhat hit a wall. We want
him to stay in Spain so we can see if he's at his peak or if he has more to offer this league and has gone on
loan to Valencia. Hi's brother is at Villarreal, only half an hours drive from Valencia so it's a move that works for
both of us."

View attachment 368126
Puyol:
"Marc. yes, we have received a bid from PSG and it has met his release clause. We don't want to sell him os we've offerd him our own deal but it will be up to the player to make his decisions."

"That is all for today, thank you very much"

Neymar in particular was very excited about this tour, he'd never been to Australia
but as we got ont he plane told me he'd always wanted to visit. I asked for 3 DVD's of our
first opponents games.

Just because these are non-competitive dose not mean I won't be going all out. I need to
get use to pre-match analysis and identifying the teams weaknesses. I had a simple 4-5-1 in
mind but without seeing the opposition, I could be sure how I was going to send the boys out.
Despite my overzealous work ethic, everyone seems in good spirits.

First match is in Melbourne; southern Australia, on Sunday and we're due to arrive on Saturday night.
A quick training session Sunday morning and let the guys have an hour to themselves before we go to the stadium and introduce ourselves to the 2013/14 season.

"Yeah, I'm delighted to be linked. Chelsea have given me
permission to talk to my agent and agree terms"

Keep an eye out for the B team striker, Dongou. Great player that can bang in goals when needed. Don't ever let him leave except for loans.

Already got him on a new contract with a 72M Euro release clause. The kid is an absolute talent and will be trained to be what Samuel Etto was for Barca a few year back!

The first leg of our pre-season tour of Asia went well and we're now on our way to
the city of Toshkent in Uzbekistan. There have been some fantastic results and a it's been
real bonding experience for the team.

Neymar and Andres (Iniesta) developed a small rivalry in Sydney
while learning how to surf. Messi still claims to be the best in the daily
FIFA 14 sessions. Team spirit is really high right now.

Despite how it looks, it's not all fun and games. I've been up late into the night every night of this
tour looking back over old La Liga matches, trying to identify Pep's overall tactical plan.
Having been coached under it, I was familiar with the defensive aspect of it but discovering
how to get Neymar, Perdo and Messi to interweave was difficult.

Then, after watching a replay of the FIFA World Club Championship Final, I made the breakthrough.

During any offensive phase of possession, attacks in the final third
of the pitch require a system of movement. In the Final Third, there are three
areas to work within.

  • [*=center]Central Third
    [*=center]Wide Left Third
    [*=center]Wide Right Third
View attachment 368060
Each of the front three positions themselves within one of these three areas so as to spread the play
and provide with and stretch the defense. A key element in this is that during an attack, the area
that the ball is in must have two offensive players looking to play the ball.

  1. If Neymar has the ball in the Wide left third, Messi come toward him offering options while Pedro moves into the Central third to provide a goalscoring option.
  2. If Pedro has the ball in the Wide right third, Messi come toward him offering options while Neymar moves into the Central third to provide a goalscoring option.
  3. The only exception to this is when Messi has the ball in the Central third. Given that there are two Central Defenders, we need three offensive players. Both Pedro and Neymar will come in while with will be provided by the Wing backs.

Now, The way I want my players to move is using a system I call "the overlapping run".
There are two kinds of movement in this tactic.

  1. [*=center]Lateral movement
    [*=center]Vertical movement
View attachment 368059
Now, if Neymar has the ball is in the Wide Left Third and makes a Lateral Movement in towards the goal,
Messi will run in a Vertical Movement to create indecision in the CB: Who dose he follow?

Now as Neymar approaches the Central Third, both Pedro and Messi are passing options.

View attachment 368058
This indecision is what will allow our players the time to find and pick out the correct pass.

Now watch it in action, paying attention to the directions of the
supporting runs as they overlap the ball carrier.

As we sat down in Toshkent, I had a quick word with the player.

"This is the big three! Before, I was just playing around seeing how effective ye all
were in different possitions, but these three matches will decide who starts in 2 weeks
time against Celta Virgo. Okay lads! We've drilled for this and everyone knows how I want
us to play, let's get out there and get back to winning ways."
