After 2 defeats in the last 3 games and mounted injury problems plus the 3game suspention to Essien people were starting to question Chelsea's chances of retaining the PremierLeague title. But today manager Carlo Ancelotti has confirmed that although Brazilian defender Alex needs surgery on his knee it can be delayed so he can play against Birmingham tomorrow at St Andrews.

This is a massive boost as the defence looked pretty weak against a very good Sunderland side last Sunday.

Bigger and arguably better news is that Captain John Terry looks set to only miss tomorrows game and Wednesday's at home against Zilina, meaning he should be back next Sunday to face Newcastle at St James Park. Terry has stated he has had this problem for about 5 years but it had got to a stage where somthing needed to be done.

Carlo names a starting 10 today as he is yet to choose whether Ferriera or Bosingwa will play at right-back, here is the starting line-up for the 3pm kick-off. Petr Cech, Jose Bosingwa or Paulo Ferriera, Ashley Cole, Branaslav Ivanovic, Alex, Jon Obi Mikel, Ramires, Florent Malouda, Salomon Kalou, Nicholas Anelka and Didier Drogba.

Well this is terrible news.

Regardless of their return, I think Chelsea will be investing in a centre back come January.

Whatever happens, I don't think Chelsea will win the title now. As good as your team is, I cannot see it. Injuries have hindered your progress and despite this 'good' news, Alex will probably make his injury worse and Terry spends 75% of his time injured.

Not for me this year.

Just as you say that mate.

Ancelotti has also stated that he may be forced to bring in a defender in the January transfer window is these injury problems keep up.

To be fair Terry has hardly missed many games and im sure Chelsea wouldn't risk Alex if there was a chance he could do more damage.

He doesn't look the same player though, does he? You'll be up there at the end, I am sure of that, but not for me mate.

Wish them both the quickest of recoveries though.

On the defender issue i have a few in mind. Gary Cahil as Bolton have said they will have to sell thier best players. Also Phillipe Mexes has been touted as i believe his contract runs out at the end of this season so we could get him for a cut price.

I take your opinion that you don't think we will win the league its all about debate and your opinion is as valued as mine. I just wanted to set the injury front right thats all bud.

even if Alex does come back, he will need an op at some point, also Terry plays through the pain and is barely himself any more, I fully expect Chelsea to struggle throughout the November/December period.

I respect your opinion. :)

Thanks for posting. I enjoy debating. ;)

What are the chances Terry being back so soon after an England match!

I heard a few journelists points on this last night and they raised a very good point indeed. Knowone on here can question Terry's passion for playing for England but Terry goes to work every day at Chelsea to work with a manager/staff/fans that stood by him through what happend. But at England he see's a manager who he must feel dosen't respect him and fans who don't apprecitate him. At the end of the day yes he earns alot of money and if true then he did wrong but he is still a human being with feelings.

Why don't they give some youngsters a chance instead of resorting to buying when they have injury problems? Van aanhalt looks a decent prospect (apologies if they have already shipped him out on loan)

Alex will have surgery after this game and Terry went to see a specialist in Italy this week and he would of had more than 2weeks off by the time he comes back next Sunday. The length of this injury seems as if it could have been exaggerated/misunderstood by the media. Terry has come out and said he dosen't want to play through injurys anymore thats why he is back next Sunday not before.

Also if no complications Lamps could be back at the start-mid December, Essien will be back after the Newcastle game and Drogba has been playing with an illness.

Nah he is still at the club mate, will most proberly start against Zilina on Tuesday. I think he wants a centre back mate.

That's no excuse in the slightest.

in fairness he brought that somewhat on himself with actions (the whole bridge thing and then calling out capello)

chelsea says there is no risk but alex should still be careful. still dont like to see any players carrying serious injuries, so in that respect its good they're not so bad

Similar to what I was saying to people after the sunderland game. We should be playing people in their natural positions (i.e. McEacheran in CM, Bruma in CB - gives him a bigger chance to prove what he can do) instead of having a winger like Zhirkov who clearly can't play CM.

The problem is see with this though is the experience of the player that they player next to (i.e. Ramires + McEacheran - both are inexperienced).

We will probably buy someone in Jan anyway to cover for them.

That's no excuse in the slightest.

Ashley Cole would rather win the Champs League with Chelsea than the World Cup with England because the fans at Chelsea love him while with England he isn't appreciated. Same situation tbh.

And so he should.

No offence to Paulo Ferreira, but isn't he essentially your third choice right back (behind Bosingwa and Ivanovic)? So when he's forced to play in the middle, something's not right. Two injuries shouldn't bring the champions to their knees.

Yer i agree but that press conference at the World Cup was ment to be the Captains job so why didn't Gerrard come out?? Terry feels he has been treated unfairly and as a person if you feel you are being treated unfairly how does it make you feel towards the person that is making you feel like that??
