Sunderlands Pre-Season Preview
View attachment 378925
Italian manager Paolo Di Canio is looking forward to spending his first pre-season with Sunderland following his appointment at the club towards the end of last season. After being appointed on the 31st of March, Di Canio led his side to two wins, two draws and three losses in the final seven games of the season to keep the club in the Barclays Premier League following a poor season under Martin O'Neill.
Having already signed ten players (Duncan Watmore, Valentin Roberge, Cabral, Modibo Diakite, David Moberg Karlsson, Vito Mannone, Jozy Altidore, El-Hadji Ba, Emanuele Giaccherini and Ondrej Celustka), Di Canio is keen to further strengthen his squad during pre-season in the hope of securing a mid-table finish in his first full season in charge. Despite already losing Danny Graham and Alfred N'Diaye on loan, Di Canio is also looking to ship out several players to reduce the wage bill and increase his transfer budget in order to sign some of his targets.
Sunderland have been heavily linked with Greek winger Charis Mavrias and Argentinian fullback Gino Peruzzi - although Di Canio is understood to have lost interest in Peruzzi due to recurring injury problems. The Italian has repeatedly stated he is scouring the market for a creative midfielder and also made it clear he may move for another striker with AS Roma forward Osvaldo strongly rumoured.
During pre-season, Di Canio's side will play 5 games - starting away at Scottish side Greenock Morton before facing Glentoran, Burton Albion and Burnley all away from home. Sunderland will round off their pre-season with a trip to linked club Asante Kotoko from Ghana.
