How do you think Liverpool have done in this deal?

To me making 10 million out of the whole process is what we needed although Aquilani could prove to be too lightweight for the premiership.

It seems a good like for like though ... The best thing about it as a Liverpool fan though is it is pushing Lucas closer to Corinthians haha.

Alonso is quality .. no doubting that but i'm thinking with this replacement there has been a substantial amount of damage control.

Hopefully that 10 mill can go into buying an old experienced striker for Torres to play off of.

alonso was a really underated player, even by liverpool fans, i always said alonso was liverpools best player. he will b missed, aquilani is good, but he will take time to gel in

It really depends.

He could be class but then he could be a pile of ****..i truly hope hes not a flop tho hes a quality player.

name one italian player (aside frm Di Canio and Zola) who has excelled in the prem? Yes there was De Matteo,Vialli, Benito Carbone, Cudicini, and more reently Di michele and Dossena., but lets face it, none of those names (aside form cudicini who i rate as one of the best keepers ever to play in the prem) have ripped it up have they?

Aquilani will stuggle to adapt to the pace and physical presence of english football imo.

look at Veron, although not italian he played mst of his football in italy in the italian style. he came to man utd and was average at best. struggled to adpat to a very different playing style. how we managed to get 18million out of chelsea ill never know!!

im happy to be proved wrong but i dont think i will be. i think rafa has made a huge mistake in letting xabi go.

Veron played a completely different position to what he is good at while at Man Utd & Chelsea. Veron was, and still is, one of the best midfielders in the world.

if u are one of the best midfielders in the world you dont play badly because you are slightly out of postion.

He wasn't slightly out of position, he was being asked to play a different role all together. At Utd he was often playing with his back to goal in a more advanced role. Imagine signing Pirlo and asking the same of him.

That's quite similar to what i was going to see about imagine playing Makele in AM or Fabregas in a holding role

I don't feel he'll struggle to adapt to the pace at all .. it's just the strength of opposing players i'm more concerned about especially considering Alonso was a fairly strong player.

Imagine Hull vs Liverpool and Olfanjana (sp) plowing straight through Aquilani ... Unfortunately i can imagine him being quite an Elano'eque type signing where in the little games he can pull magic out of the bag but when it comes down to a physical battle ... he may go missing.

At the same time i imagine Rafa is fully aware of all this and he could prove to be a surprise.

WRT the Alonso being underrrated comment i honestly feel quite the opposite. When looking at Mascherano and Alonso i always felt Mascha was the underrated out of the 2 because of his sole defensive duties.

Aquilani will be good, in the future. But, as now, he is unable to really replace Alonso.

By the way, as a Corinthians fan, we are anxiously expecting Lucas. Benitez never realized how he can really be used. He played extremely well for Gremio.

Wich is the same problem with Ferguson and Veron. Veron is a fantastic player, he has just won Libertadores da América for Estudiantes. Alone.

I don't think Lucas can be compared to Veron.

Veron is established on an internation level with acheivements abroad from South America.

Lucas was a potential prospect who played well for Gremio but never made it in European football.

After watching him week in week out, it wasn't a matter of being out of position, but more a matter of commiting too many fouls that lead to crucial opposition goals.

The main issue with Aquilani adapting isn't his age and physical attributes for me .. but how quick he can pick up either Spanish or English to efficiently communicate with Mascherano and Gerrard

Sorry if I didn´t make myself clear. I never intended to compare the hability of Lucas with the one Veron has. Veron is an absolute demon, Lucas is just a good player.

Wich I meant is that both had similar situations: Ferguson did not know how to play Veron, and Benitez did not know how to play Lucas. Veron did very well in Europe because Eriksson (I can´t believe I´m saying this) played him very well at Lazio. But I believe that Lucas never showed off because Benitez, his only european manager, don´t know how to use him.

If Lucas really comes to Corinthians, he will problably play extremely well under Mano Menezes (very good at finding adequate player positions) and return to Liverpool valorized.

I also think Aquilani has to develop a little more. Maybe in two or three years, he will be great.

I'm sure Benitez knows how to play Lucas. I think it's just incredibly hard fitting him into the team, because for Lucas to play in his preffered role it would of meant Mashcerano, Gerrard, or Alonso would have to suffer. Playing one of those out of position would of been a lot more detrimental to the team overall.

Hopefully with Alonso gone, Lucas can start to step up a bit more and show all the idiot fans who currently hate him how good he actually is. He has already shown what he is capable of in a few games. The ones against Newcastle and Man Utd spring to mind.

He needs to grow his hair again too!

That´s true. He has no place alongside Mascherano, Gerrard and Alonso.

lucas was not good against us. just because he was part of the team that beat us heavily does not automatically mean he had a good game or contributed at all to our downfall.

people who think lucas is rubbish are not idiots. maybe i'm wrong about him but me thinking he is **** is due to the fact most of the time he seems to play **** and does not make me an idiot.

Haven't saw much of Aquilani tbh. Don't watch much Italian football any more. Think last season I saw him against Napoli and he got MOTM. I may be wrong do not quote me on it. He was quality though who ever it was against. Whether he is consistent or strong enough for the Premier League though, I'm not sure. The 10 million profit is good but IMO we need to let Lucas go. If Aquilani picks up a lot of injuries or 1 big one then he will be getting matches. I'm not someone who jumps on young players backs or who goes to the match and boo's someone off the pitch but he must be sold. He makes mistake after mistake which cannot be tolerated at the highest level. He could cost us valuable points or even trophies! Therefore we do need to sell Lucas. I've heard of Corinthians interest and if we can get 5 million I'd be pleased. Then we could potentially bag Lee Cattermole for 6/7 million. He'd be some good backup and is proven at Premier League level. Then maybe Benitez could take one last dip into his kitty and buy Negredo for 6 million. He would be great backup also and just doing this would give us so much more strength in depth. We could sell Dossena to Napoli for 5 million too as we don't need 3 left backs which we could leave for a January acquisition. So... Buy Cattermole and Negredo for a combined total of 12/13 million. Sell Lucas and Dossena for 10 million. Then we'd have about 10 million left for a January signing... Maybe a young centre back. As much as I hate to say it Carra is coming to the end of his career so a young centre half could be good. My pick would be Godin of Villareal he certainly wouldn't cost as much as 10 million.
Buy:
Cattermole-Wigan-6Million
Negredo-R.Madrid-6Million
Sell:
Lucas-Corinthians-5Million
Dossena-Napoli-5Million

January
Buy:
Godin-Villareal-8Million
Sell:
Voronin-???-2Million

Even though i dont like agreeing with lvierpool fans i must admit the cattermole would be a realyl good signing for pool expecially if masharano leaves next season..

hes english aswell which is always a positive.

Aquilani & Alonso are similar players..the main difference is that Alonso is stronger & Aquilani is faster

aquilani: isn't he the italy u21s captain. don't quote me on it, but if he's at that level and he's 25, that's not too good
