August 23rd: Second game of the EPL

We lined up the following formation

match2z.png

Reasoning

In this game, I switched to a more attacking version, playing quick, wide and down the flanks

I wanted to rest reo-coker as he had been playing for England only days before the game. And as I went for 3 points, I used pace and flair down the flanks.

First half

1-0(25) Bouma, penalty
2-0(36) Agbonlahor

We started out good but it took 25 minutes until we scored 1-0 on a penalty after Cahill had been fouled in the box. Only 11 minutes later Carew dropped deep and held up the ball, passing a great t-ball onto Agbonlahor who had made a run into the box

2:nd half

Rather boring actually, we pushed for the third gaol but when it seemed like the players where not up for scoring anymore, I switched to a more defensive tacit and saw out game, making 3 subs

blacvkburn.png

Reasoning

Again, I wanted to use a complete MR ( Snra) and to add some flair and pace, I used Young at ML. The tactic, using a diamond, would now face a hard test as Blackburn use 3 central midfielders ( DMC-MC-MC) in their 433.

First half

It became obvious that we acted too passive in midfield and we were outnumbered. I switched to a quick counter game, using a flat 442 instead and then we regained control of the game

2: nd half

0-1 (54) Carew

We scored 1-0 after a quick break. In the 77th minute, I decided we needed to close out the game and reverted to a defensive 4141.

I expected Wigan to play a defensive formation as launch quick counter attacks so in this game, I went for a slow breakdown tactic, using a deeper d-line to be able to close down more heavily on their players without risking to be put under too much pressure if they managed to put a direct ball into channels behind our d-line, creating a gap between our defensive and attacking strata’s

1st half

We started great and scored from an owngoal in the 6th minute… It was clear that Wigan was unable to cope with our movements and they got dragged out of position time after another. The goals kept coming and at half time, the score line was 4-0.

2nd half

We just played pout the game, switching to a more defensive tactic, playing narrow and without the heavy closing down. This way, our players saved some energy for the coming match in Europe

round 1

I put up the strongest team for this match as I was unsure how my players would react playing in Europe. It turned out that Aberdeen lined up a 352 suing wingbacks so just before the match started, I decided to play more direct down the flanks, putting balls in behind their wingbacks

1st half

We dominated totally and their central midfielders were dragged wide out of position when covering for their attacking wingbacks. This gave our more defensive MC, Petrov, all the time and space in the world to move into attacking positions aging and again, scoring twice, Carew also scored one goal…0-3

2nd half

Sunderland plays a 4411, using a support man and relies heavily on strength. I chose the same tactic and in the Wigan game, a slow breakdown tactic.

Very Nice Deatil, very interesting... will keep me on fm base every day hopefully :D

If there is anything you feel is "missing" or have suggestion on areas where I could make a more in depth analyze of, just make suggestions in the thread ( i.e, not on how cardiff are doing in the CC or how many matches Lee bruntford have played, but more in the lines of what is already in the thread)

I will make a special post each month called "the spotlight is on ***-player, man managent ", were I look at how one single player are doing over the course of a couple of months, what team talk that have been used and how he has reacted to it.

Really, really good story, like the detail about the tactics. Ill deffinately be following :)

Reasoning, Tactical & Team picking

We played a quick and direct counter, focusing the play through the middle, hitting t-balls into channels for our wingers and strikers to run onto. Playing Narrow, I provided Snra on the right flanks with a free role to use the space outside of his fullback and Young on the left flank were given instructions to play as a normal attacking midfielder, cutting in to play on touch football with our Deep dropping striker Carew. I also chose Gardner in midfield as this is a game that suits him perfectly. Whilst not being a top notch player, he is perferct when playing narrow as he has great Work Rate, Agression and Acceleration. He was to win all of his 7 tackles, made 4 interceptiona and 3 key passes

1st Half

The first chance of the match came after Carew had been fouled just outside the box whilst holding on to the ball, playing with his back to the goal, awaiting reinforcement. He provides us with about 2-3 of these free kicks every game and today Snra curled it beautifully into the right corner...0-1. the rest of the half we were closer scoring our second goal than they were a equaliser and Carew was denied a clear penalty when held back by Woodgate

1freekick.png

2nd Half

Tottenham started the second half by dropping their d-line, playing slightly narrower and using a high pressing approach. This way our direct ball onto our forwards when useless as the Spurs defenders where perfectly positioned and our attempts where all in haste due to the pressure they put on us. Only 3 minutes into the half I reverted to a more controlling version, only this time playing very narrow and slow, also dropping our d-line and using a shorter passing game. This seemed to do the trick and when Spurs raise their d-line once more, I switched back to the more direct game, and the reward came instantly when Friedel hit a long ball over the top of their defence for Carew to run onto…0-2 !

September summary

All in all a great month with wins in all matches. We are still yet to concede and the switch in formation, playing more compact, might have been the key to our success. Mind you, we have only faced one f the top 8, United, Chelsea, Liverpool, Arsenal, Man City Everton and Spurs*. Carew and Snra have been in top form the whole month and when players like Gardner puts in a performance, then there really is no need strengthen the squad. Onouha also made his debut putting in some hard work ( though his passing completion is below 65 %), giving us the opportunity play with a higher d-line as he provides the team with some specific competence when it comes to pace.
