Atalanta B.C. - The New Force In Italy?

ATALANTA B.C.

Atalanta are a side in Italy who have spent 51 seasons in Serie A (the 11th most) but have never won it. In fact they have only ever won one major trophy - the Coppa Italia in 1962-63. My aim is to change all that.

The club has superb facilities for getting youth players into the club and I will be hoping to make the most of that in the future. Basically I see Atalanta as the Southampton version of Serie A without the money!!!!

Good luck mate. I had a good save with Atalanta a few patches ago. Finished 3rd in my first season and managed to sign Muniain, Susaeta, Iturrapse and Arduiz all for like 20 Million because Bilbao got relegated!

PRE-SEASON & AUGUST

When arriving at the club I immediately assessed my squad. The defence definately needed strengthening while a top quality midfielder wouldnt go amiss either!!!! I cancelled every single affiliated club and managed to get Liverpool as a parent club also.

The best and most surprising news of the pre-season was that the board agreed to give me both extra transfer funds and wages thus my budget jumped from ?3m to ?14m!!!!!

I sacked a load of staff and appointed a whole load of new ones (all Italian apart from Meulensteen) so I am fairly content that I have the staff required to help me on my way.

First season aims??? Top half finish.

PLAYERS IN

Before the first game of the season in the cup I had brought in 2 players. Firstly Carlos Diogo came in on a free transfer to be cover for the right back spot. I wouldnt expect the Uruguayan to be here next season though as he is basically a stop gap signing.

Then I spent ?3m to sign Marco Capuano from Pescara. The 21y/o CB will be my first choice defender and will hopefully develop into a key figure for the future years.

Then I spent ?5m to buy out the other 50% of Luca Cigarini's contract so we now own all of him.........

Dedryck Boyata was brought in from Manchester City on a free transfer to add to our depth in the central defensive area.

PLAYERS OUT

I sold Moussa Kone to Bologna for ?1.3m and young prospect Lorenzo Pezzi to AC Milan for ?625,000. Pezzi is only 16 and looked half decent but I thought I would cash in (plus I prefer to have players with player faces lol). Guglielmo Stendardo was sold to Parma for ?170,000.

I also released several experienced players such as Mario Yepes, Stefano Lucchini, Cristian Raimondi, Lionel Scaloni, Giorgio Frezzolini and Giulio Migliaccio. They didnt have a future with me and were taking up quite a bit of wages.

The first XI is decent enough I think. Bonaventura, Cigarini and Consigli are probably my best 3 players and will need to perform at their best if we are to reach the top 10. My planned first XI is...........

A comfortable start to the season. Capuano impressed greatly on his debut and got the first goal which was assisted by Maxi Moralez who got the 2nd.

We took a bit of a battering here but we escaped with a point. Rodionov (who my DoF agreed to sign but I cancelled the deal) put them ahead but German Denis quickly levelled. We did threaten occasionally but we didnt deserve to win.

This is a great result although we got a bit of luck - firstly with the own goal and secondly by them having an equaliser disallowed. Ezekiel came off the bench to score on his debut.

This was very harsh. We battered them in the first half but just couldnt score and so it continued in the 2nd half and they nicked the winner late on.

SUMMARY

This month was so-so. We had some decent results and performances and we had some shockers too. What has become apparent is the likes of Bonaventura, Carmona and Cigarini have been pretty poor. German Denis also has been well below an acceptable standard apart from the last match.

I made a few moves in the transfer market. I paid Juventus ?170,000 to get 50% of Vicenzo Fiorillo. He will remain at Sampdoria however.

My main signing was Tomas Martinez. I paid River Plate ?4m for him and he looks to be a great prospect. Hopefully he will turn into a world class player and he will get plenty of game time to do so!

Finally I brought in a young striker called Imoh Ezekiel on loan from Standard Liege. This deal was setup by my director of football and although I wasnt searching for a striker the guy looks decent and we shall see how he does.

SUMMARY

This month was pretty near perfect as we won 3 and drew 1 of our 4 games to finish the month top of Serie A!!!!! Once again we were hampered by injuries (Denis, Ardemagni, Maxi Moralez and Consigli) but we battled through the adversity and played really well.

SUMMARY

Another decent month as we collected 9pts from a possible 12 and remain top of Serie A. It looks as though we are easily going to finish in the top half and my aim now is to get European football for next season be it the Europa League or the Champions League.

If we can steer clear of injuries and possibly strengthen in January who knows???

SUMMARY

Things are getting very scary indeed!!!! We end the calendar year 5pts clear at the top of Serie A although we have games coming up against Inter Milan (who just sacked their manager and appointed Bielsa), Juventus and Udinese.

In the Coppa Italia we will play Fiorentina.

I am not sure whether or not I will be able to strengthen in January. A lot depends on if I will be able to change my expectations for the season.

SUMMARY

So January came and went and we are still top of the league although our 5pt lead has been trimmed a bit!!! We are also in the Coppa Italia semis and will play Serie B side Cesena for a place in the final.

I signed a new contract with the club and was able to adjust my budgets but in the end it was needless as I only brought in one player.............

I agreed a deal to sign Nicola Murru from Cagliari on a free transfer but decided to pay the ?775,000 to bring him in immediately. He looks as though he could develop into a top quality full back and I am interested to see how he performs and develops.

SUMMARY

Overall this month was pretty good. We may have been replaced at the top of the league by Juventus and they will be our opposition in the Coppa Italia final too.

So going into March, my favourite month, we are pretty much certain to be in the Champions League next season but can we win the title or even better the double???

Obviously next month I will get my first youth intake. In preparation of that I released almost 20 youth players who were never going to contribute to the first team.
