For my next project, I'm thinking 1980s. In the 1986 World Cup final, Argentina and West Germany both employed sweeper systems so I may try and replicate one of those formations. Or both!

Maradona Shadow Striker formation anyone? :D

(I fancy having a go at catenaccio too!)

The 86 final isn't on there, but matches from both Germany and Argentina from the earlier rounds are there.

Awesome link, thank you. I use many sources when I build historical formations (which I should reference..and will do in future!) but I must admit that one has passed me by.

In 86 both sides were 5-3-2 Sweeper but, as I remember (and I listened to the final on the radio of my mate's Ford Escort), Argentina played on the counter with a DM and Germany were more attacking with Magath behind the strikers.

Think I'll try the Argentina one first with a Maradona figure as SS, a Valdano as TM or DF and a Burruchaga driving forward from midfield. Everyone else can just kick lumps out of people like Argentina '86 :D

Well, forget the Sweeper idea. Sweepers and Liberos are completely borked in this ME. I'll think of something else...
