As the debate came across in another thread, instead of going off topic I have decided to make this thread. What in your opinion is the biggest rivalry in world football and why?

My opinion:

Machester United vs Liverpool (the battle of the North-West)

Why?

Well its simply, the two biggest clubs in English football, the two most successful clubs in English football. The only two clubs in England that can be honestly placed along the worlds elite in the "greatest club" league.

The history the two clubs have sets up for the perfect rivary. With Liverpool dominating in the 70s and 80s and Manchester United the 90s to the present day. Success adds more fuel to the fire with Liverpool pipping Manchester United in the all time major honours list in England. With this, Manchester United are closing in on this record and to say Liverpool hate it is an understatement.

The Canal? Yes people this rivalry between the two cities started many many years ago about the Canal that runs through both Manchester and Liverpool with both cities complaining about the others use of the Canal. To say the least, this has added more hatred between the two sets of fans.

Match Day? After being lucky enough to have been able to witness 8 North-West derbys at Old Trafford and Anfield I have to say, nothing compares to the match day experience. The atmosphere inside the ground is electric. The tension before and during the match could be cut with a knife. This is one match the two sets of fans want to win more than any other.

In my personal opinion, if I had the choice between winning the title or doing the double over the Scousers, id glady take the 6 points against the enermy.

So what about guys, give your opinons and reasons.

ps: not argueing! :)

Real Madrid vs Barcelona for me, they hate each other with such passion :O

For a person who thinks Manchester United and Liverpool is the biggest rivalry, it's strange how you get the name of the derby wrong when it's North West, not North East.

:P

what a **** lol i have mentioned the north-west derby in the op a couple of times, no idea why I put north-east lol.

changed :)

Saw this one coming. :P

As I said in the other thread, El Clasico has got my vote. Although I have seen an Inter v Milan derby at the San Siro which was pretty special, I must tell you.

The thing is people, rivalry is based on more than just how much teams and teams fans hate eachother. I agree, the Barca vs Madrid game is a huge football rivalry but the history, the passion doesn't compare to that of United vs Liverpool. Just my opinion though.

Being from Stockport, I think it's the Manchester Derby, I love watching it, especially last season. wub:

I can't comment on foreign derbies, because I simply don't live there.

i agree mate, unless you have witnessed them in person you cant really comment on them, i have been to an El Classico match at the Nou Camp 3 seasons ago (sat at the very top, what a **** view) and yes it was a great game to experience but manchester united vs liverpool to me just has that special edge.

You want history and passion?

Madrid and Barcelona are historically the two biggest cities in Spain. Barca are based in Catalonia, a rebellious and separatist region of Spain to the point where they have their own dialect. Madrid, on the other hand, are establishment, nationalist Spain. This was enhanced by the Spanish Civil War, in which the fiercely independent Catalonians exercised their right to become semi-autonomous. Madrid were pro-Franco, Barca anti-. This is a rivalry that goes far deeper than football - basically, El Clasico is the Spanish Civil War taking place on a football field. Mes que futebol, as it were.

That is why it is the greatest rivalry in the game.

I think there is already a thread on this :S

I dont think it is possible for fans to hate each other as much as Celtic and Rangers but unfortunately there is becoming less and less players playing for both sides who care about derby's :S

El Classico may of been a war, but Rangers and Celtic is an on-going war.

Yeah there is a thread on this.

For me it has to be one of Boca Juniors vs River, Galatasarray vs Fernabache or Celtic vs Rangers.

I am Turkish so trust me it's not Galatasaray vs Fenerbahçe. Number one reason of this is that there are neither political, nor geographic, nor social difference between its supporters. It's not like Catalan Barcelona vs Spanish R.Madrid, or Catholic Celtic vs Protestant Rangers, or Boca Juniors vs River Plate(Scoial status between supporters).

I have had the privilege to witness a Milan Derby live and it is something else, the tension, the passion ohhhh

Ha, no way is Liverpool - Man Utd the biggest rivalry. In Eastern Europe, Turkey and Argentina they are one helluva lot bigger. ****, even Celtic - Rangers is a bigger rivalry than anything in England.

El Classico. Silver for Milan derby and ManU - ManC snatches the 3rd for mehh .

I know for Everton fans it is the Merseyside derby, but some of my mates say it aswell and some kopites say the L'pool - Man Utd match. Also Millwall - West Ham for crowd trouble! ;)

Inter Milan - AC Milan for me. The atmosphere is like nothing else in football. Unless you go to turkey hehe. Otherwise Arsenal Spurs is a biggie.

Totttenham Vs. Arsenal

It's the biggest derby in the world.

El Clasico is second.

Look there is a difference between atmosphere and rivalry, I can guarantee than Turkish fans are the best in Europe(And the second best in world after Argentina). Espically Beşiktaş fans. World Sound Record 132 Decibel, look to Beşiktaş 2-1 Liverpool match. But please don't look to return match...:'((Liverpool 8-0 Beşiktaş Champion's League Record)
