A goal and two yellow cards in 18 minutes - the Elvis madness

Gary Neville

Published at 7:33PM, September 27 2026

The game kicks off.
3' - Elvis El Alagui works himself some space inside the box and finds the net with a wonderful strike.
15' - Elvis El Alagui looks to repeat the trick but De Havilland blocks him with a well timed tackle. El Alagui drops dead looking for a penalty. The referee has none of it and gives him the yellow for diving.
18' - Pritchard dives in a tackle to dispossess El Alagui on the left. El Alagui rolls over. The referee consults with the linesman and looks in his pocket. It's another yellow! Elvis El Alagui sent off for simulation...

This type we could live with

Sir Alex has a rich history with eccentric players. I've been on the pitch with some of them. Cantona was quite a character, Roy Keane too. Such players are a real asset, they change games. They are often in their own league and they know it. What you can't afford is to become dependent on them. Not even Ronaldo risked getting himself sent off over simulating twice in the space of 3 minutes. But when you get an Egyptian called Elvis it's asking for trouble.

Don't get me wrong. Elvis El Alagui is a player of immense talent. I enjoy watching him. His early goal to open the score was sheer brilliance. What he did after is sheer madness. Thank God the Owls left it too late and we somehow wrapped the points with 10 men. The team needs Elvis on the pitch but I'd back Ferguson to drop him for a few matches to teach him a lesson of responsibility. We get it, Elvis. You are the star. Now put yourself together or you are free to go. Perhaps another part of Manchester would take you. They have an appetite for bizarre "stars".

Leeds United: Strength in depth will pay as the season advances - Matteo
leeds-united-team-photo-2011-2012.jpg

by Dominic Matteo
I can tell you from my days at Liverpool it's never a good idea to talk about the title in September. The best of squads can tire and struggle with injuries. Teams who dominated the opening months or even up until January may suddenly run out of steam. Especially when you are playing in Europe.

I see some of the media-labeled "title contenders" are already picking up some long term injuries. It's never nice but it's part of the game. One or two you can handle. But get three on the sidelines for a lengthly spell and you will suddenly struggle to maintain your form. The first question I ask is how far are we from the top. We are close. Two points is nothing but we shouldn't rest on the laurels. The next question popping in mind is how equipped are we to keep going in the coming winter?

View attachment 345823
White times are coming

And this is where I pin my hopes. I think we and Newcastle have the best depth in the League. Not just attack or defense, we can cover for every position. Trust me, this will come handy. It allows the manager to rotate and keep players fresh, or drop someone when they fall out of form. We don't appear too dependent on any of our players and they seem to be a closely knit bunch. Herrera is the leading scorer but Jovetic supports him well and Le Gac and Pöyry are prolific on the wing.
Pöyry creates the most chances in the League but Grimaldo, Rivière and Grueso have been hitting some key passes. Teenager Shaun Gregory is providing healthy goalkeeper competition. There is sufficient cover and quality at the back.

In conclusion - may the winter come. To those WAFLL - we can handle it, to all others - fear it and fear us!

Premier League Table

The Contenders:

Newcastle (1st; 15pts; +15) confident displays against contenders Liverpool and Manchester United plus convincing victories over weaker opposition see Newcastle amass 5 from 5 and take the lead in a dominant fashion. They still have a game in hand over some of the chasing pack and managed to rotate their players well enough to avoid any injuries.
0 Current first team injuries.

Blackburn (2nd; 15pts; +14) another perfect month for Rovers as they confidently match Newcastle's run and sit second in the table just 1 goal behind the leaders. If they can win their game in hand that may change altough their strike force is depleted with 3 of their finishers out to injury.
3 Current first team injuries:
Luca Boccaccini (AMRL/ST) 9-12 days (damaged elbow)
Álvaro Aguilar (ST) 5-6 weeks (strained knee ligaments)
Amos Obi (ST) 4-14 days (fractured wrist)

Leeds (3rd; 13pts; +12) three wins in a row see Leeds rise four places in the table and lurk just behind leaders Newcastle and Blackburn at the top. They also have a game in hand over the lower placed contenders.
2 Current first team injuries:
Brian Shea (WBL/AML) 4-6 weeks (torn hamstring)
Haris Slomic (DLC) 6-9 days (damaged elbow)

Chelsea (5th; 12pts; +4) a couple hard fought draws and a win allow the Blues to remain unbeaten and in touch with the top but they drop from 1st to 5th and have played a game more.
1 Current first team injury:
Sebastjan Abvelj (MC) 11-14 days (pulled hamstring)

Liverpool (7th; 10pts; 0) four points from September not good enough for scousers as they drop 3 places in the table and have played one more game than the leading pack. Fans at Anfield will be hopeful their inconsistent form doesn't continue in October. They need to make do without 2 of their most potent strikers because of injuries.
2 Current first team injuries:
Daniël van Bremen (M/AMC/ST) 5-6 weeks (fractured wrist)
Eirik Mork (MC/ST) 4-6 weeks (torn hamstring)

Manchester United (10th; 7pts; +5) poor month as Devils take only 3 points to drop down to midtable. They still have a game in hand but can they make it count? Hopes for title march quickly fading at Old Trafford. Lengthly injuries to no less than 3 of their offensive players will give little reason for optimism amongst fans.
3 Current first team injuries:
Guy Amadou (M/AMC/ST) 2-3 weeks (twisted ankle)
Almamy Traoré (AMR/ST) 5-7 weeks (double hernia)
Walter Blasi (MLC/AML) 4-6 weeks (torn hamstring)

Other teams to watch:

Manchester City (4th) managed to take over Chelsea on goal difference. If the Citizens can keep their impressive form they could make bookmakers regret not including them amongst the top contenders.

Everton (6th) are working their way up the table looking to mount a challenge for European slots.

After a promising start Arsenal (13th) have failed to build on and need to take advantage of their game in hand if they are to avoid midtable obscurity this season.

Tottenham, Crystal Palace and Birmingham occupy the bottom three and need to gather a win before the teams above them manage to open a serious gap.

Magpies go top amidst rumours for dressing room unrest

Newcastle went to Emirates knowing a win would see them clear at the top and did a fine job to wrap the points home. I'm glad as Moyes' Arsenal is a tricky team to play when you need a result.

View attachment 346074
We don't want to see that again

It's not all rosy though. The fans flooded our website with concerned messages about a supposed falling out between captain Scotty Walden and leading scorer Jim Priestley after the TV cameras captured a heated argument on the pitch. I know both lads well and they are strong characters. These things happen but I believe it should all remain in the locker room as we don't want to give London media more ammunition exactly this season. Hristov promised to hold a meeting with Scotty and Jim and let them trash out their issues in private. And they should as both of them are key figures in the national team. We'll see how this goes and if Hristov will persist playing them in the same time.

View attachment 346075
Lampi needs to put such chances in

Priestley is becoming an increasingly important man in attack with Mikael Lampi struggling to hold a regular goalscoring form. His shooting against Arsenal was so discouraging and with Arsenal threatening to get back in the game with an early second half goal Hristov had to look at the bench to bring in Dong Dexin. All goes to suggest we could see some changes in the Premier League team next week.

Chelsea hierarchy need to examine alternative options with FA referees panel

Tony Cascarino Commentary
Last updated at 11:25PM, October 4 2026

Manager Marcelino complained about referee decisions after the 3-3 draw with Stoke. It came as little surprise following three penalties awarded to the away team. Stoke scored two to steal a point and even harcore Potters will find it hard to dispute referee Anthony Taylor influenced the score. Stoke winger Bikwani will be unpopular figure with Blues fans as well as Taylor as he kept going down in the box and how often will you see the same player get his team three penalties in the opening 30 minutes of a game?

View attachment 346099
3 in 30 minutes? Come on!

Marcelino picked to concentrate on his defense's lapse in concentration to concede a late equalizer but truth is if it wasn't for Taylor Chelsea would have never found themselves in such a position at the death. The Spaniard knows well he can't speak openly in front of the press and risk a ban. He is a relatively new face in England and risking to turn the referee panel against his side isn't the smart way to go.

Turning it around

The Chelsea hierarchy need to act here and back the team. The official channels rarely produce results and even if a complaint grants an apology the points are already gone. Though there are other revenues to explore. Lobbying is considered a dirty word as far as public opinion is concerned but it's the reality of modern game behind the stage. Sir Alex Ferguson has been applying pressure with comprehensive return. All big clubs now have former players or related figures at key positions in the FA. Chelsea need to examine their connections and pull the strings to get back on a level playing field.

Patient Manchester United standing their ground

Gary Neville

Published at 7:18PM, October 18 2026

I talked about the need of the squad to calm down, stop thinking about the title and concentrate on their game. Glad they are doing exactly this. Two big wins against other contenders don't put us back in the frame but also don't allow to lose more ground.

View attachment 346169
Defensive line step up

Sir Alex adapted well to a difficult situation with some key figures out to injuries and El Alagui persisting with inconsistence. He asked other areas of the team to bring goals and they duly delivered. The defensive unit deserve credit with scoring 3 out of 4 total on top of conceding just once against some of the most potent attacks in the league. I really hope Ferguson persists with the same back four and doesn't have to make changes there. Gillespie and van Dijk have formed a great partnership and Flint and Konaté impress to their left and right. The opportunity to keep them on the pitch together will be key to how we do until the end of the year.

Academy graduates coming good

Good words should go for academy superkids Dylan Connery and Keith Sedgemore as they are increasingly leaving their stamp on the pitch. They are the ones to watch and hopefully will open the first team door for more talented youth.

Dependency on Luca means Rovers need Plan B
............................................................................................................
By Kevin Gallacher.........................8:25 PM Sunday 18th October 2026 in Sport
............................................................................................................

Our last two games have shown a worrying tendency to rely on Luca Boccaccini a little bit too much. Neil Lennon is currently short of options up front but the team certainly could help easing the burden on the Italian with a few goals from midfield. It seems whenever Boccaccini is not playing or struggling to get chances we go dry. I admit it's probably too soon talk about a tendency but a good manager needs to work to prevent bad signs turning to such.

View attachment 346196
Lennon looking for Plan B

There is a big chance Luca might become jaded if we keep relying on him. To prevent this from happening Neil needs to find a plan B for some of the games. Utilizing the wings would help if we can get players like Maldonado in shooting positions. Espinoza could also provide a few goals with his ability to take long shots. I'd also suggest extra work on attacking set pieces as captain Barreto and Eze are very strong in the air and their presence in the opposite box could pose a threat. Considering this it is peculiar Eze is still to get a game.

View attachment 346199
Give the big lad a chance

Of course we can accept Manchester United outplayed us and Liverpool was always a tough place to go to. Three points from these two games is by no means a bad return. Although we should take nothing for granted and do our job to alter and cover for the little cracks as other teams will be watching and looking to exploit them when they meet us.

Newcastle at the dawn of a new rivalry as Rovers put hopes for unbeaten season to premature end

View attachment 346262

Blackburn Rovers took vengeance for the two lost cup finals earlier this season to halt Newcastle's perfect record in the Premier League. Missing out on a good chance to open a gap at the top is a little discouraging but Hristov already voiced concerns the players may find it hard to motivate themselves and this loss could be the catalyst just in time.

View attachment 346260
Our finishing was atrocious

What went wrong in the game? We usually count on drowning the opposition with a massive amount with clear-cut chances. The game plan was no different today and it would have worked if it wasn't for van der Vaart and Lampi's wasteful shooting. Priestley performed better but saw three excellent opportunities saved by ter Stegen. I think the players will have to take their responsibility for this. Hristov allowed four top class strikers to have a go during the game and only Pilar paid back with a goal.

Blackburn also did well to negate our other threat by muscling central defenders Bernal and Erwin away from the ball during corners. Credit must go to Neil Lennon for playing out such a layered strategy to perfection. As we pursued a late equalizer and forced a spree of corners he brought on an additional tall defender in Eze and eased the pressure in the box.

View attachment 346258
Lady Luck was with Rovers

I don't think we could complain about their goals either. There were doubts Maldonado was offside when he jumped at the rebound to grab their second though it was an excellent counter which simply deserved a goal. Lady luck was on the home side's shoulder today and all we can do is congratulate them and move on.

View attachment 346259
Title decider?

It is the second time Blackburn manage to prevail this year following a 2-1 friendly back in July. We have already played them the amazing four times now and neither side has an advantage. We will be meeting on at least one more occasion with additional clashes possible in both domestic cups and the Champions League. Are we facing a new rivalry? It's too early to say but it appears the title could be decided between them and us. May the better team prevail... and we Geordies know who that is.

Oxford fans beg Messi to stay with Us as the legend ponders retirement

If when I was beginning my work with the Oxford Times you'd told me I'd have the chance to interview Lionel Messi I'd have laughed at your face. If you'd told me he would be playing at Oxford United and in the Premier League I'd have called the local madhouse.

And yet it happened. Oxford broke into the top flight and Messi looked for a calm place to finish his career after spells with Manchester City and Queens Park Rangers. He's a loved person here as much as anywhere else he has been but he has spoken about how calm life is here and how happy he is to be here with his family.

This is his fourth season with the Us and he is 39. Few would have predicted he'd get this far so it isn't a big surprise he is considering hanging up his boots with a view to try a new role in management. Whatever your choice, thank you, Lionel!

Anfield beginning to turn on the manager

Anfield has always been patient with its managers. Especially when they haven't been backed sufficiently by the board. Though some sections of the Kop are already talking about changes. I don't intend to argue with them, I will simply note the facts. Everyone is entitled to an opinion.

View attachment 346299
Tradition must be respected

The summer saw Liverpool execute a major overhaul of the squad. Seven first team players were brought in for a combined fee of about £90 million. Seven players were sold, released on a free or retired, for a combined fee of £60 million. Though it is worth noting one of them was solid center back Robin Pettersen who was never replaced.

Injuries haven't been generous, crippling our attack with long-term absences of both key strikers hardly giving them any opportunity to get games under the belt, let alone form a partnership.

This coincided with a chain of poor results, drawing 2 and losing 4 of our last six games. Including a humiliating 0-2 Southampton loss at Anfield.

View attachment 346300
Management needs to patch it

As each one of us is entitled with an opinion I will give you mine whether you agree with it or not. It's too early to discuss sacking the manager. I'd like to see what he will do with Mork back in the side against two smaller clubs the next two rounds. I reserve the right to reexamine my thoughts when January approaches. We can't afford to throw away investments of this magnitude each season and we need to at least give a credible try to the European places.
