Always found John Grisham's crime thriller novels quite good. A lot of them are to do with law but I find that side quite interesting. If you like historical fiction, Bernard Cornwell's saxon series is amazing. I've read all five books in the game of thrones and they're brilliant although the 5th is particularly long, you may just be best off buying the second one of that series for your trip.

Scar Tissue - Anthony Kiedis (Red Hot Chilli Peppers)
Things the Grandchildren Should Know - Mark Oliver Everitt (The Eels)

Fantasy:
Sasha, Tracato, Petrodor, Haven (A Trial of Blood and Steel series) - Joel Shepherd
Spirit Gate, Shadow Gate, Traitors Gate (Crossroads series) Kate Elliott
Axis Trilogy - Sara Douglass
Always hard to get past Raymond E Feist
Assassins Apprentice/Royal ***./Quest (Farseer series) - Robin Hobb
