FA Cup First Round
Newport County 0-1 Cambridge United
Amazing! A totally unexpected win against League 2 opposition. Ryan Donaldson scored what turned out to be the only goal of the game in the first half, an unstoppable drive from the edge of the area. We had a marvellous chance to finish them off when we were awarded a penalty with half an hour left. Cunnington's shot was saved but thankfully we didn't regret it. Anthony Griffith was sent off late on for Newport and we were able to hold out for an incredible victory.
We are drawn at home to Chester in the FA Cup Second Round. The tie is to be played at the end of this month.

Cambridge United 1-3 Grimsby
A pulsating, end-to-end game ends in disappointment and defeat. Anthony Straker put Grimsby ahead early on and Liam Hearn made it 2-0. Grimsby should've scored again but Ryan Meadows' penalty was saved by Fabian Spiess. Straight after the penalty, Mitchell Austin scored to get us back into the game. In the second half, Straker scored again for Grimsby to put the game out of reach. Ryan Donaldson and Adam Cunnngton were particularly culpable of missing numerous chances to score. We drop down to second place behind Exeter on goal difference.
Completely Unacceptable having led 2-0 at half time. Ryan Donaldson and Luke Berry scored in the first half and we dropped down a gear and have gifted Dover a point. Jeff Goulding and Oliver Risser with their goals. Exeter lost at home to North Ferriby which has allowed Kidderminster to overtake us both into first place.
Tom Champion will be suspended for the next match.

Halifax 0-1 Cambridge United
A fortunate win here after a lethargic performance. Halifax will feel robbed after Tom Elliott's strike with five minutes left gave us all three points. The win puts us, temporarily at least, back at the top of the table.
We are drawn at home to Bashley in the FA Trophy First Round.

Cambridge United 2-3 Chester
Another poor performance and this time we've been punished for it. Tobi Sho-Silva got a hat-trick for Chester and our goals were scored by Luke Berry and Tom Elliott. Somehow, we are still top of the league.
A fair result overall but conceded a late equaliser so I am a bit disappointed. Andy George put Salisbury ahead before Adam Cunnington equalised at the end of the first half. Ian Miller scored his first of the season to put us ahead but ten minutes from time, Shepherd Murombedzi equalised. We drop down to second place.
More misery as Chester dump us out of the FA Cup. John Rooney opened the scoring just after half time with an excellent free-kick. Ian Miller equalised with ten minutes left and it looked like we might get a replay at least. Two late goals from JJ Hooper and Danny Harrison sent us out.
A poor month. Apart from the Newport game at the start of the month, our performances just have not been good enough. We are still well in the hunt for promotion but we will not get anywhere playing like we have been recently. It's not coincidence that we have struggled as the form of Adam Cunnington and Luke Berry has dropped.
Player of the Month
Ryan Donaldson. If this man had better shooting boots, we'd never lose. Don't get me wrong, his overall performances are great and that is why I have selected him this month, but he rarely goes a game without missing one or two glorious chances. I shouldn't really berating whilst awarding him my player of the month but that's where the frustration lies. Great player, could be the best in the league.
FA Trophy First Round
Cambridge United 4-0 Bashley
An expected win against lower league opposition. Bobby-Joe Taylor scored three and set up the fourth for Tom Elliott. Colin Wharton was sent off for Bashley 30 seconds into the second half.
We are drawn at home to Carshalton in the Second Round of the FA Trophy, to be played in 10 days time.

Cambridge United 1-0 Gateshead
Three points are all that matters here. The performance was decent and we could easily have scored more. The only goal of the game came in the first half when an Adam Cunnington shot was deflected into his own goal by Carl Magnay.
We are drawn at home to Tamworth in the Third Round.

Forest Green 2-1 Cambridge United
Very disappointing. We found ourselves 1-0 up at half time, Luke Berry scoring an excellent free-kick. After the break, we fell apart and always looked second best. Goodwin and Norwood with the goals for the home side.
An excellent performance and a much needed league win. Luke Berry scored two in the opening twenty minutes before being forced off through injury. Ryan Donaldson then made it 3-0 soon after. Adam Cunnington missed another penalty late in the half and the striker currently looks bereft of any confidence. It's a worrying situation but I'm in no hurry to remove him from the team, knowing his quality. We took it easy in the second half and allowed Braintree to score late on through O'Dowda.
A pretty good month overall. We continued our progression with relative ease in the FA Trophy and finish the month top of the league. The top of the table is incredibly tight as most teams have been dropping points here and there. I'm pleased with our position but can't help but see a lost opportunity. We've had some poor results and had we just come off better in a few of them then there would be a comfortable gap at the top. The month ended poorly with news of Luke Berry's injury. I was contemplating dipping into the loan market anyway, this may have forced my hand. We'll have a look and see if there is any deals worth doing. I won't be brining someone in for the sake of it.
Player of the Month
Luke Berry. Has picked up the goals when Cunnington's form has stuttered. Will be sorely missed for the next 2 months.

Cambridge United 1-2 Hayes & Yeading
A terrible way to start the year as we drop off the top. We controlled the entire game but gave away sloppy goals. The away side somehow found themselves 1-0 up at half time and it looked like it might stay that way. Ten minutes from the end, Ryan Donaldson equalised. Just five minutes later, Tommy Fraser found himself in acres of space and netted the winner for Hayes & Yeading.
We are pleased to announce that Matty Blair has joined us on loan from Fleetwood until the end of the season.
Skrill Premier
Dartford 1-1 Cambridge United
A fortunate point. Jason Prior gave Dartford a first half lead and I was very worried about our chances of getting anything from the game. Thankfully, Bobby-Joe Taylor popped up twenty minutes from time to salvage a point. Matty Blair had a disappointing start to his loan spell with us, he was eventually substituted for the goalscorer Taylor.
FA Trophy Third Round
Cambridge United 1-1 Tamworth
We were a bit unlucky today and responded well to going behind early on. Richard Peniket put Tamworth ahead after only 90 seconds but it was all us after that. Mitchell Austin equalised before half time but we couldn't find a winner in the second half. A replay awaits.
Rory McAuley has joined Eastleigh for free. His contract was up in the summer and really didn't have a place in my future plans.
FA Trophy Third Round Replay
Tamworth 1-2 Cambridge United
A decent win sees us through to the next round. Great pressure in the area forced Michael Townsend into an own goal in the first half. Richard Peniket equalised early in the second for Tamworth. We were awarded a penalty with 20 minutes left and this time Cunnington scored. I'm hoping this is a turning point for our main striker, he really hasn't been himself for a long, long time.
I am pleased to announce the signing of Portuguese attacking midfielder, David Viana on a free transfer.
Skrill Premier
Cambridge United 1-1 North Ferriby
Another disappointment in the league. A fair result on the basis of the game but we really need to be winning these games. Danny Hone gave the away side the lead and Ryan Donaldson equalised for us in the second half. David Viana made his debut, playing the last half an hour.
Our season is in danger of derailing at an incredible pace. Danny Pilkington scored the only goal of the game early on. Hereford were reduced to ten men before half time and still we couldn't take advantage. Very worrying times.
Much better. Bobby-Joe Taylor scored one and made the other two as we dominated from start to finish. Adam Cunnington was dropped from the starting line-up for the first time and his replacement, Tom Elliott, took advantage by scoring. Tom Champion gave away a late penalty but it was only a consolation goal for Lincoln.
FA Trophy Fourth Round
Bishop's Stortford 1-3 Cambridge United
An excellent win to put us through to the semi-final. Bobby-Joe Taylor scored to give us the lead. Woodall equalised for Bishop's Stortford. Tom Elliott then put us back in front just before half time. David Viana came on at half time and sealed the win with his first goal for the club. A super free-kick from 25 yards, bent into the far corner.
A poor month in the league but we are somehow still in 2nd place. All of the top teams have dropped points recently and it has allowed Grimsby to open up a five point gap. There is now just 10 points between ourselves in 2nd and Macclesfield in 16th. I'm very pleased to be into the semi-finals of the FA Trophy. I'll be the first to admit that this competition was very low on our priorities but to get to this stage means we are now very much in it to win it. The league will always be our main focus and I'm very keen for us to get back on track. An extremely tough month in February means I am not holding much hope.
Player of the Month
Bobby-Joe Taylor. The youngster came into the side to cover Luke Berry's loss and looked to be the probable victim when we signed Matty Blair and David Viana. He has responded remarkably and it will take something special to get him out of the team at this point.

Kidderminster 0-1 Cambridge United
A brilliant win! We played well throughout but it was looking very much like it would end 0-0. Adam Cunnington came on and struck the winner in the 91st minute. A brilliant moment for Adam and the team.
FA Trophy Semi Final First Leg
Cambridge United 0-0 Grimsby
A well fought game and we can be pleased with the overall performance. We're unfortunate not to take a lead back to their place but I'm still confident we can put up a fight for the final.
Another decent league win. David Viana's 40-yard free-kick somehow crept in to give us the lead and Tom Bonner wrapped it up with a header late on. We move top of the league on goal difference.
Ryan Donaldson picked up a knock late in the game against Wrexham and will be on the sidelines for up to 4 weeks.
FA Trophy Semi Final Second Leg
Grimsby 2-1 Cambridge United AET
A very unlucky defeat and we can now turn our full attention to the league campaign. Jordan Burrow looked to have won the game for Grimsby in normal time, opening the scoring with 20 minutes to go. Liam Hurst equalised soon after and we went into extra time. 5 minutes into the restart, Luke Berry was taken off injured. We soldiered on with ten men but couldn't hold them back any longer, David Wheeler getting the winner in the second half of extra time.
Luke Berry's season is most likely over. On his return, he was taken off and has been ruled out for 3-4 months. I take full responsibility for rushing him back into action. Huge disappointment.
Richard Tait also picked up a knock and is out for around 12 days.

Exeter 1-1 Cambridge United
A very good performance with a tired and depleted squad. Tom Elliott gave us the lead 2 minutes into the game but Exeter equalised immediately through Cameron Howieson. Both sides had chances to win the game but couldn't finish. Tom Elliott was forced off through injury.
A really poor showing from us today. Billy Hasler-Cregg gave Southport a first half lead and we never really looked like getting back into it. The team is suffering from fatigue after a very tiring run of games.
A mixed bag this month. We started very well and have trailed off at the end. Injuries, fatigue and suspensions have really hampered us in the last two games. March continues at the same pace and I'm very concerned with the lack of recovery time. Thankfully we are still in the fight for automatic promotion. However, looking at the table, so is everyone else. It's going to be a crazy end to the season with just 11 points separating Grimsby at the top and Halifax in 14th.
Player of the Month
Liam Hurst. It's been a gruelling struggle this month and no-one has really been too consistent. Liam has put together some decent performances in testing circumstances recently and so gets the vote for February.
A superb performance as we get back to winning ways in style. Matty Blair scored his first for the club to put us 1-0 up. Adam Cunnington then doubled the lead before half time. David Viana scored with half an hour left to make it 3. Matty Blair then doubled his tally for the club with the fourth. An excellent win and something to build on from here. We head back to the top on goal difference.
We dominated the first half and were unlucky not be in front at half time. York came out and scored two quick goals. It was a harsh reflection of the game and thankfully it sparked us into life. Matty Blair was brought down in the area and the penalty was given. Cunnington missed (again!) but scored the rebound. Cunnington equalised moments later and we were well on top. Howard Clee was then sent off for York with twenty minutes left. We pressed for the winner but just couldn't do it. Grimsby lost so we move one point clear at the top.

Cambridge United 1-3 Tamworth
Utterly ridiculous. Woeful. Awful performance today. One of the worst of the season so far. We dominated the first half yet found ourselves behind at half time. Tamworth added two more in the second half. Shambolic defending for all three goals. Ashley Chambers scored for us with the last kick of the game. A glorious opportunity has been completely thrown out the window. I shall be demanding a response in the next game.
The club announce a new intake of youth players. It's a disappointing year and it looks unlikely that any of them have what it takes to make the first team.
The home against Brackley will be my 100th game in charge of the club.

Cambridge United 2-0 Brackley
A huge three points for us and a decent response to last weeks shambles. The first half was uneventful and ended goalless. Adam Cunnington broke the deadlock from the spot, his 20th goal of the season. Ryan Donaldson scored the second on his return from injury.
Wonderful. A great display of our true attacking capabilities. Adam Cunnington scored the opener from the spot just two minutes into the game. Bobby-Joe Taylor made it 2-0 moments later. Craig Stone turned the ball past his own keeper for 3 and then Ryan Donaldson made it 4-0 with half an hour played. Macclesfield responded and scored through Scott Boden. Within 30 seconds of the restart, David Viana scored to make it 5-1. George Whiteoak made it 5-2. Late on, Bobby-Joe Taylor got his second of the game for 6-2.
Grimsby win the FA Trophy after a final win against Alfreton.
Skrill Premier
Alfreton 4-2 Cambridge United
Very disappointing. We didn't play too badly but just fell apart at the end. Tom Bonner put us ahead in the first half but John Akinde equalised before half time. With half an hour left of the match, Adam Cunnington gave us the lead. Ten minutes later, Akinde scored again to equalise. Straight away, Alfreton took the lead for the first time through Sam Togwell. We collapsed again and they made it 4-2 through Shaun Harrad. Both sides had a player sent off at the end, Tom Champion for us and Alan Goodall for the home side. Grimsby and Exeter both dropped points so it means Alfreton are now behind us in second place. A big opportunity to stretch the gap missed.
Despite two defeats, it has actually been a good month. We end three points clear with five games remaining. Our performances have been a lot better, forgetting Tamworth for a moment. Now we need to kick on. Five games left, the next being at Grimsby, and three are at home. This is a massive opportunity and it's in our hands. This is it. This is the chance.
Player of the Month
Adam Cunnington. A dramatic drop in form mid-season but Adam has found his scoring boots at the right moment. If he keeps this up into April, he could fire us into the football league.
A stunning win away to Grimsby! A super Bobby-Joe Taylor cross was turned in by Cunnington in the first half. David Viana rounded off an incredible performance with two second half goals. A thoroughly deserved win.
A terrible result really. If there is one game we should be comfortably winning, it was this. Recently relegated Dover defended resolutely and got what they came for. Cunnington scored our goal and Marlon Jackson theirs. Tom Champion was sent off again, as was Frederick Champion for Dover. Thankfully, Alfreton lost too. We move four points clear.
A very good performance moves us a step closer to the football league. Ian Miller headed us into the lead in the first half. Bobby-Joe Taylor then rifled in the second before half time. Adam Cunnington then wrapped up the win with a brilliant goal half an hour from the end. Ryan Donaldson was forced off through injury early in the game. With two games left, we are four points clear. A win in either game will see us win the league and promotion.
If all else fails, we have at least secured a place in the play-offs.

Chester 3-1 Cambridge United
A win would've secured promotion. As other results went our way, a draw would have basically assured us of it. With our far superior goal difference, a point would leave us three points clear. As it happens, we've lost and must respond next week. A draw should be enough, but we are going to play the game to win it. A bad result but it's still in our hands.
We've done it! We've won the league and promotion to League 2! The players responded brilliantly to the last defeat and really stepped up when it mattered most. Ryan Donaldson gave us a first half lead and a fairly even game became very tense. The relief when David Viana scored on 65 minutes was massive. It lifted our confidence and Tom Elliott wrapped up an historic day with the third in injury time.
Fantastic. Our target was promotion and we have achieved that in style by winning the league outright. The league was incredibly tight and no team was consistent enough to run away with it. Thankfully, we had a strong end to the season whilst the teams around us stuttered. In the end, there was just ten points separating us as league champions and Chester in 9th who didn't even make the play-offs. To play half a season without our best player, Luke Berry, and still win the league is a superb achievement and something I am very proud about. This was a real challenge for the squad as all the players went through patches of bad form and spells on the sidelines. As a group, we have come through it magnificently. We can now look forward to a season in the football league.
Adam Cunnington. Adam struggled massively in the middle of the season and his decline was extremely worrying. But without his goals, we wouldn't be where we are now. 25 goals and 7 assists are his final totals and an excellent return for our main man up top.
Ryan Donaldson. He has come on leaps and bounds since I took over as boss and this season he really flourished. It is no surprise that we looked in serious trouble when he was out of action for 4 weeks. His return lifted the entire squad and was key to our end of season run. Ryan completed the season with 13 goals and 10 assists to his name.
Luke Berry/David Viana. Luke carried us until January, and David finished the job. Both players are truly incredible and are a credit to the club. Providing Luke stays with us, it is going to be a real struggle fitting them both into the side next season. Luke finished up with 13 goals and 11 assists and David finished with 7 goals and 8 assists in just 17 starts.
Most first-team players have extended their contracts to the end of the 2016/2017 season. These are: Luke Berry, David Viana, Adam Cunnington, Mitchell Austin, Luke Allen, Richard Tait, Greg Taylor, Bobby-Joe Taylor, Liam Hurst, Ryan Donaldson, Tom Elliott, Tom Bonner, Ian Miller and Tom Champion.
Striker Michael Hunt has been promoted to the first team.
The club announce friendly fixtures against Luton, Stevenage, Brighton, Derby, Aldershot and CRC.
Pre-Season Friendly
Luton 1-0 Cambridge United
An unlucky defeat but we had other priorities today. The entire squad got 45 minutes under their belt. I'm looking forward to re-kindling the Luton rivalry in League 2 this upcoming season.
Fabian Spiess returns to Notts County. We have been unable to agree and extension but it is something we will try to work on over the summer. Fabian was superb for us last season.
A very good win and a very good performance. Two goals for Dean O'Halloran, two for Tom Elliot, one for Tom Champion and one for Mitchell Austin. Excellent stuff.
Pre-Season Friendly
CRC 0-5 Cambridge United
Another expected victory. Two goals for Bobby-Joe Taylor, two for Michael Hunt and one for Tom Elliott.
Pre-Season Friendly
Cambridge United 4-2 Notts County
Our pre-season preparation is wrapped up with an emphatic win. Our goals scored by Richard Tait, Mitchell Austin, Adam Cunington and Michael Hunt.
Our ultimate goal is to survive in this league. I think we have enough about us to do more than that but I'd rather not begin with high expectations. We've kept the basis of the squad and added quality and depth where needed. If our form players can carry their performances into this year then I think we'll do very well but this cannot be certain. Survival, I'll be happy.
Key Players
Adam Cunnington. Simple. If he scores as many as he has done in previous seasons then we will be doing fine.
Luke Berry. Hopefully we can keep him fit for a better part of the season. Our best player by quite some way, we need him fit for as long as possible.
Ryan Donaldson. Outstanding last year, can the winger keep up his form at a higher level? We hope so.
An incredible start to the season. We totally dominated from start to finish. Adam Cunnington opened the scoring, Bobby-Joe Taylor made it 2-0 and Cunnington scored his second before half time. With half an hour to go, Cunnington wrapped up his hat-trick. Jack Simpson scored late on for Morecambe.
Aleksandar Gogic and Dean O'Halloran both made their debut in the Morecambe game.
Capital One Cup First Round
Cambridge United 0-2 Sunderland
We were always facing a tough task against a team like Sunderland and they showed their quality. We put up a good fight and can be proud of our overall performance.
The youngster has joined Dartford on loan for at least the next 5 months, I hope he can get more regular playing time there.
Sky Bet League 2
Cambridge United 0-1 Luton
A disappointing loss in a derby game, and our first home game of the season. We played okay but a first half Jake Howells goal was enough to seal the win.
We are drawn away to AFC Wimbledon in the Johnstone's Paint Trophy South First Round.
Sky Bet League 2
Northampton 4-3 Cambridge United
A terribly unfortunate result. We played so well. Tom Hopper got three for Northampton and David Moyo scored their fourth. Ryan Donaldson struck all three of our goals.
James Wilson made his debut, playing the last half an hour of the Northampton game.
Sky Bet League 2
Cambridge United 2-3 AFC Wimbledon
A disappointing loss today. Wimbledon played at a high tempo all afternoon and didn't take long to open the scoring. Stefano Scappani making it 1-0 after 2 minutes. A George Francomb cross then took a nasty ricochet off the post and was turned in by goalkeeper Gogic. We responded well and got back into the game when Ryan Donaldson's cross was turned behind by Taylor McKenzie. 2-1 at half time. Stefano Scappini then wrapped it up with ten minutes left for 3-1. Ryan Donaldson scored a late penalty to make the scoreline look a bit better.
Dean O'Halloran has been called up for the Republic of Ireland's U19's squad.
Sky Bet League 2
Cambridge United 2-0 Hartlepool
An excellent win and performance to go with it. Ryan Donaldson crossed for Bobby-Joe Taylor to fire in at the back post. An Adam Cunnington shot was then deflected in for a Neil Austin own goal. We controlled the game throughout and went close to adding to the scoreline.
Not a bad start to life in the football league. We've played well even when we have lost. All three league defeats were narrow and if we can just turn a few of those into draws or wins then we'll be doing fine. We're roughly mid-table at the moment and if we can finish there I'll be delighted. There's a long, long way to go yet so let's just focus on getting the points we need.
Player of the Month
Ryan Donaldson. He keeps getting better and appears to have relished the opportunity to test himself against better opposition. The hat-trick against Northampton was his obvious highlight but he'll be disappointed to have walked off on the losing side.
Johnstone's Paint Trophy South First Round
AFC Wimbledon 1-1 Cambridge United (AFC Wimbledon win 5-4 on penalties)
Another unfortunate defeat. The first half ended goalless and was a very even game. Both sides with chances. It took us just 30 seconds after the break to go ahead. Adam Cunnington with the goal. Wimbeldon equalised with half an hour to go through Luke Moore. No extra-time today so the game went straight to penalties. The first 9 were all scored but unfortunately Liam Hurst missed our fifth and we go out of the competition. Very, very unlucky today.
A disappointing result today. We had plenty off opportunities in the first half an hour but ultimately were behind at half time. Lyle Taylor with the goal. We battled hard in the second period but were flattened by two quick goals from Calum Dyson.
Tom Elliott has been injured in training and will be out for 5-6 weeks. His injury record with us has been appalling.
Sky Bet League 2
Cambridge United 1-1 Dagenham & Redbridge
A ridiculous result considering our dominance. I am not best pleased. We pummelled them throughout and if we had been more ruthless in front of goal, we could have won by 4 or 5. The first half, remarkably, ended goalless. It didn't take long for us to score afterwards though, Ryan Donaldson firing us into a deserved lead. The longer it stayed at 1-0, the more I worried. Sure enough, ten minutes from time, Brian Saah equalised. An opportunity missed today.
A brilliant win! We started very brightly and were gifted a glorious opportunity when David Prutton was sent off for Bury after 20 minutes. We took full advantage as Ryan Donaldson sent in a great cross for Cunnington to head us ahead. Donaldson doubled the lead before half time with an excellent finish from the right hand side. David Viana made it 3-0 just after the break with his first goal of the season. We allowed Bury too much time on the ball after that and they eventually scored through Alex Gilliead. Thankfully that was all they could muster and we head home with all three points.
James Wilson returns to full training and is likely to begin from the bench against Accrington.
Sky Bet League 2
Accrington 2-0 Cambridge United
A very disappointing result as Accrington record only their second win of the season so far. We again suffered from a lack of cutting edge in front of goal. Tomi Ameobi scored goals either side of half time. Adam Cunnington was forced off through injury late on.
A decent point and a good overall performance. We fell behind early in the second half, the goal scored by Luke Varney. With 25 minutes left, Greg Taylor equalised with an incredible long range effort. Dean O'Halloran thought he'd won us the game late on but his goal was ruled out for offside.
This month could have been better but could have also been a lot worse. We're comfortably above the drop zone and I'm confident we can finish the season is a respectable position. Our performances so far have generally been very good. If we can start putting away more of our chances then we'll definitely start to pick up more victories.
Player of the Month
Ryan Donaldson. Two goals this month for Ryan and he's continued his good early season form. With him on the pitch, I'm always confident that we'll score.
An incredible win against Shrewsbury, who are competing at the top end of the table. We were 1-0 down at half time, the goal scored by Paul Gallagher. The second half saw a masterclass from David Viana. First he drew us level with a fine effort from close range. He then set up Cunnington after a mazy run in which he beat 3 players. James Coppinger thought he'd equalised for Shrewsbury with minutes to go but his effort was ruled out for offside. From a corner, Viana then set up Tom Bonner to seal an excellent home win.
A decent point and we can feel unfortunate not to have won. We edged the first half but went in level. Just after the restart, Bobby-Joe Taylor sent in a teasing cross with Adam Cunnington converted well. It wasn't long before Torquay were level though, Jordan Chapell with the goal. We had chances to win it but it wasn't to be. I'm happy with the point and it's probably a fair reflection of the match as a whole.
Two second half goals sealed a memorable away win for us today. We were by far the better side throughout and I was hoping we wouldn't regret our missed chances in the first 45 minutes. Thankfully a carbon-copy of a goal from the Torquay game put us ahead. Bobby-Joe Taylor again finding the boot of Cunnington with a terrific cross. This is where the similarities ended as instead of conceding, we doubled our advantage. Ryan Donaldson found David Viana on the edge of the box and he fired in a low, hard shot into the bottom corner. We held on comfortably for the rest of the game.
Our good run comes to an end with a disappointing defeat. Cheltenham started strongly and deservedly took the lead thorough Tom Hitchcock. We were thrown a lifeline on the half-hour mark when Jason Taylor was shown a straight red card for the away side. We piled forward but couldn't find the net. The second half began as the first ended. We poured forward in search of a goal but were caught on the break. Luca Cattaneo doubling the lead for Cheltenham. We continued to dominate but never really recovered from the second goal. A disappointing day under the circumstances.
A very fortunate but decent draw today. We deservedly took the lead in the first half through Adam Cunnington. Colchester replied almost instantly through Billy Roast. The away side took the lead early in the second half, an excellent strike from Matt Green. We never got going after falling behind and equalised in very fortunate circumstances. Two minutes from the end, a defensive mix-up left Tom Elliott with simple task of tapping into an open goal. He did so and we came away with a point.
We have been drawn at home to League 1 side Port Vale in the First Round of the FA Cup.
Sky Bet League 2
Bristol Rovers 3-2 Cambridge United
Another terribly unlucky defeat. Luke Rooney scored two first half goals for Bristol Rovers. After the break, Ellis Harrison made it 3-0. It was extremely harsh on us as we had been playing very well but just couldn't find the net. We got a break as with ten minutes to go, Elliott was brought down in the area. Donaldson stepped up to convert the penalty. John-Joe O'Toole was then sent off for the home side and we went for it. Tom Bonner getting our second with minutes to go. The goals ultimately came too late and we were sent home with nothing to show for our efforts.
Another month with ups and downs. We continue to sit just below mid-table and I'm quite content with that at this stage. We've more than proved so far that we can cope at this level. We've some tired legs after a busy month but we only play five games in November so that should be manageable.
Player of the Month
David Viana. He's come alive this month and has been involved in practically all of our goals. He's given the freedom to roam behind the striker and in front of our midfield and is a constant threat to the opposition. David has contributed three goals and eight assists so far this season.
FA Cup First Round
Cambridge United 3-2 Port Vale
An excellent display against League 1 opposition. We ran rings around them all afternoon. We were unlucky not to score more and they were extremely fortunate to score twice. Cunnington scored twice in the first five minutes to really set the pace. David Viana then made it 3-0 on the hour mark. Port Vale scored two late goals which made the result look close. In reality, they were never even close to getting something from this game.
Aleksandar Gogic has been called up to the USA U20 squad.
Sky Bet League 2
Cambridge United 2-0 Mansfield
Another excellent performance and a thoroughly deserved win. David Viana was brought down in the area 60 seconds into the game and Cunnington converted the penalty. Ten minutes later, Luke Berry put Viana through on goal and he unselfishly squared for Cunnington to tap into an empty net. Mansfield pressed in the second half but couldn't find a goal to get them back into the game.
Having led the game 2-0, I am disappointed with the draw but I would have settled for this before the game. David Viana was once again the star of the show. He opened the scoring from close range after ten minutes and doubled the lead soon after. A ridiculous effort from the edge of the box. Oxford threatened throughout the game and we held them off until half an hour left. Adda Djeziri scoring the goal. They were level soon after, the equaliser scored by James Constable. They could easily have won the game were it not for some fine goalkeeping from Gogic. Disappointing to drop the lead but it's a point gained in a tricky away game.
Brought back down to Earth by a rampant Rotherham side. They were deserving of their win and we just have to pick ourselves back up and carry on. Kyle De Silva, Craig Mackail-Smith and two for Alexis Lafon. Ours was scored late on by Tom Elliott.
An excellent month overall. The win against Port Vale was superb and gives us a great chance of reaching the FA Cup Third Round and the possibility of a big trip to a Premier League side. The league is very tight and we've fluctuated between 11th and 16th throughout this month. We've a game in hand on a few teams around us that could see us move up with a win.
Player of the Month
David Viana. Again he has been absolutely incredible this month. One goal against Port Vale, two assists against Mansfield, two goals against Oxford and an assist against Rotherham. He came second place in the leagues Player of the Month awards.
An excellent way to kick off the month. A David Viana corner was turned into his own net by Kevin McNaughton to put us one up. Viana then made it 2-0 soon after. Almost instantly, Benike Afobe scored to cut the deficit. 2-1 at half time. The second half was a nervy affair and Swindon will probably feel hard done by to leave empty handed. But we won't care with three points secured against a strong opponent.
Tom Champion will miss the next two games through suspension.
FA Cup Second Round
Bishop's Stortford 1-4 Cambridge United
The home side started well on top today and took the lead three minutes in through Charlie Strutton. We didn't respond well and it took us until the 35th minute to draw level. Ian Miller, making a rare start, heading in from a corner. From then on, we were well on top. Ryan Donaldson put us ahead just after the break and Luke Williams was sent off for the home side. Adam Cunnington got the third and Bobby-Joe Taylor wrapped it up with the fourth. The win sees us through to the third round and a potential tie with Premier League opposition.
Dean O'Halloran, who joined us in July, has signed a contract extension until 2017. Dean has impressed when called upon this season and I believe he can progress to be an important part of the team in the future.
Sky Bet League 2
Southend 0-1 Cambridge United
This game really did look like it was going to end up 0-0. Thankfully, 20 minutes from the end, Donaldson popped up to secure another valuable win.
Sky Bet League 2
Cambridge United 2-1 Newport County
Absolute daylight robbery. We weren't in the game for the first hour at all. Tom Flanagan giving Newport a first half lead. David Viana equalised for us on the hour mark and we improved. In a dramatic finale, Tom Champion grabbed the winner for us in the 92nd minute. Newport County will be wondering how they have come away with nothing.
Our massive FA Cup tie against Liverpool will be televised, bringing much needed revenue to the club.
Sky Bet League 2
Cambridge United 2-2 Chesterfield
An absolutely soaking wet Abbey Stadium played host to a pulsating game on Boxing Day. Jake Eyre put Chesterfield ahead early on but David Viana scored a brilliant equaliser from outside the area. James Spencer put Chesterfield back into the lead after half time and Cunnington equalised with 20 minutes left. We maintain an unbeaten month.
A dramatic win! With 70 minutes of the game gone, both sides looked content with a draw. That was until Jack Sampson put the away side ahead. The goal sparked something into the team and we responded magnificently. Luke Allen drew us level with a superb free-kick, his first goal of the season. Liam Hurst then also grabbed his first of the season, putting us ahead. Adam Cunnington, having set up the first two, grabbed a goal to make it 3-1.
Incredibly, we end the month in the play-off places. The team have been in superb form this season and fully deserve to be positioned so high up in the table. The league is still very tight and a few bad results could see us drop off dramatically. We've got a busy month in January, beginning with the much anticipated home game against Liverpool. I haven't much hope for the game but we're going to give it our best shot. To be honest, I was mainly hoping that the game would be televised for the income it will generate, which it is. We'll play with no fear and hope for some luck on the way.
Player of the Month
David Viana. I just cannot look past David for this monthly award. He's continued as he has done for the past few months. I feel no ounce of regret giving this award to him for the third time in the row, he's been our best player and will continue to be awarded this whilst he continues to play like he is. He was brought to the club around a year ago now to offset the loss of Luke Berry to injury. He hasn't looked back since and has even pushed Luke back into a deeper central midfield role. I didn't think any player was capable of that but David certainly is.
Adam Cunnington goes down with food poisoning on the day of the Liverpool game and will miss the match.
FA Cup Third Round
Cambridge United 2-3 Liverpool
We put up a **** of a fight against the might of Liverpool but ultimately it was just too much to ask. Robbie Brady gave Liverpool the lead inside 3 minutes and I feared the worse. Ryan Donaldson sent the sold-out Abbey Stadium delirious with a superb equaliser with half an hour gone. I was hoping we could at least hold on until half time but Adam Maher made it 2-1. Our hopes diminished further when Maher scored again on the hour mark. Tom Elliott ignited a late rally when he made it 3-2 with 15 minutes left. We just couldn't find the third but go home with our heads held high.
Bobby-Joe Taylor was injured in the Liverpool game and could face 6 weeks out.
Sky Bet League 2
Luton 0-1 Cambridge United
A fantastic derby win. We were very poor in the first half and fortunate to go in still level. A much improved second half saw us take the lead through Tom Elliott. We held on comfortably to continue our fine league form.
Sky Bet League 2
Cambridge United 1-1 Northampton
A fortunate point gained here. The team are suffering a bit from the heavy fixture schedule and it really showed today. Zavon Hines put Northampton ahead with a fluke goal just before half time. We struggled to up our performance but got an equaliser when Lee Collins turned into his own net. We piled on the pressure late on but couldn't get the winner. A disappointing result but considering the performance, I'll take the point.
A decent, hard-fought point today. Fatigue forced me into two half time substitutions and when Luke Berry and Richard Tait were forced off with an injury late on, it meant we ended the game with nine men on the pitch. Mayor opened the scoring for Hartlepool in the first half. Luke Berry equalised for us in the second. With a week until our next game, the players will have some much needed time for rest.
Kevin Roberts has spoken to me of his desire to move on from the club. His contract was up at the end of the season and I was debating whether to renew it. This has made up my mind and he will move on with our best wishes at the end of this season.
Sky Bet League 2
AFC Wimbledon 3-0 Cambridge United
A really poor performance and we were punished ruthlessly for it. Goals scored by Jake Cooper, Harry Pell and Luke Moore.
A very poor result after we took the lead in the second half. Luke Berry made it 1-0 soon after half time. Gillingham replied in devastating fashion with three goals in the final half an hour. Two for Lyle Taylor and one for Tommy Smith.
Tom Champion will be suspended for three games after he picked up his 15th yellow card of the season against Gillingham. I'm fine with his aggressive nature but it's starting to cause us problems.
Sky Bet League 2
Dagenham & Redbridge 2-3 Cambridge United
We got a scare at the end but otherwise a comfortable result. The damage was done in the first half as went into half time 3-0 up. Goals from Viana, Berry and Cunnington. Dagenham scored two incredibly fortunate goals to set up a nervy final five minutes but we held on. The first was a shot that cannoned off the post, hit Gogic and rolled over the line. The second was a strike from the half way line that somehow found it's way into the net. I began to think the gods were conspiring against us but we held out for an extremely important three points.
19-year-old Joe Riley has joined us on a free transfer. Joe is a defensive-minded midfielder who can provide more than adequate cover for the rest of this season. I've been assured by our scouts that Joe has the potential to go on to be a regular in the team sooner rather than later. Joe was released by Manchester United last summer.
An incredibly busy month and the players are really starting to feel it. We've only got four games in February, with a week in between each, so I'm hoping we can use the time to keep ourselves in good shape for the next few months. Results-wise, it hasn't been a bad month. We've kept ourselves at the right end of the table which I'm very pleased about. The Dagenham game was very important as I'm not sure how we would've dealt with a third loss in a row. Obviously our pre-season targets have shifted slightly now. I still think that the play-offs is too much to ask, even in our current position. My focus now will be on a top half finish and we'll see how we get on.
Player of the Month
Luke Berry. It's a tough one this month as players have been in and out of the side and no-one has really had a consistent run of good form. Luke has found himself shifted into central midfield since returning from injury at the start of the season. Obviously he's not getting the goals and assists like he used to sitting behind the striker. David Viana has taken up that role but Luke's contribution overall is invaluable. He's stepped up this month with two goals and a few assists, which I'm sure he'll be delighted with.
Richard Tait and Bobby-Joe Taylor return to full training.
Sky Bet League 2
Cambridge United 3-0 Bury
A hugely confident win today in front of our home fans. Ryan Donaldson opened the scoring. A magnificent Mitchell Austin pass gave Cunnington the freedom of the penalty area and he made no mistake to make it 2-0. After the break, Donaldson got his second and we saw out the rest of the game. Richard Tait made his return from injury, with half an hour at the end. Joe Riley also played the last half an hour, his debut for the club.
We had numerous chances to win the game yet must also feel lucky to get a point. Exeter led for most of the game despite being second best. Jon Stead got their goal in the first half. It took until the 85th minute to get level. Elliott was brought down in the area and Ryan Donaldson scored the penalty to grab a deserved point.
We absolutely battered Accrington today and have come away with nothing. The stats below will show you that. It's not good enough really. We need to be more clinical in front of goal.
Goalkeeper Will Norris has signed a one year contract extension.
Sky Bet League 2
Shrewsbury 2-4 Cambridge United
An incredible performance against the league leaders. David Viana put us ahead after a dominating first 20 minutes. Daniele Bazzofia scored for Shrewsbury to ensure we went in level at half time. With 20 minutes left, James Wilson scored an unfortunate own goal to give Shrewsbury the lead and it looked like we might have blown it. Five minutes later and we were level, Tom Elliott coming off the bench to equalise. With five minutes left of the game, Tom Bonner rose highest from a corner and put us into an improbable lead. Soon after Elliott scored again to make sure of it. Stunning.
An excellent month overall. If we'd gotten what we deserved against Accrington then I'd be even happier. Thankfully we responded with an amazing win at Shrewsbury. We end the month in 7th place and in the final play-off spot. Whether we can stay there or not is another question. There's still 12 games left to play so it is much too soon to consider. We've been playing well lately and providing we can keep it up, we'll finish up where we want to. It will take a massive collapse now for this to turn into an unsuccessful campaign.
Player of the Month
Tom Elliott. Tom may have just worked his way into the starting line up. Adam Cunnington's scoring form has been patchy at best of late and Tom keeps on providing. We're going to need to utilise everything we have for this run-in so I'm very pleased to see him hitting form.
An excellent win after falling behind. Graham Cummins scored after half an hour to make it 1-0. Tom Elliott equalised for us just before half time. Liam Hurst came off the bench to grab an all important winner with 20 minutes left. We played the last 15 minutes with ten men when Austin Mitchell was forced off through injury.
A really unfortunate defeat but a thrilling game. Tom Hitchcock put the home side ahead at the start of the second half, against the run of play. We chased the equaliser with wave after wave of attack and finally made the breakthrough, Luke Berry with an unstoppable shot from outside the area. Cheltenham returned the favour and got the winner late on through Luca Cattaneo.
The club announce a new intake of youth players. Left-back Jed Manning stands out far above the rest and has real potential to make it in the first team.
Sky Bet League 2
Colchester 4-1 Cambridge United
A terrible result. We had numerous chances to score but clinical Colchester have made us pay for a poor defensive display. Two goals for Jordan Slew, one for Gavin Massey and one for Ben Nugent. Adam Cunnington got ours.
Aleksandar Gogic has been called up for the USA U20's.
Sky Bet League 2
Cambridge United 1-1 Coventry
Another dominant display has left us without a win. We didn't break the deadlock until the 83rd minute but when we did, Coventry replied instantly. Cunnington got ours, Barkhuizen for them. Gogic was taken off injured midway through the second half.
Sky Bet League 2
Cambridge United 0-2 Bristol Rovers
Disappointing defeat against title chasers Bristol Rovers. We once again had more of the game and more chances but come away with nothing. An unfortunate James Wilson own goal gave them a first half lead. Eliot Richards then doubled it after the break. We were constantly knocking on the door but to no avail. It's frustrating but I can't ask for much more from the team.
A decent point against an in-form Mansfield side chasing the play-off spots. David Viana gave us the lead 40 seconds into the game. Mansfield responded with force and were ahead 25 minutes later. Goals from Tommy O'Sullivan and Gonzalo Barreto. Mansfield were definitely on top but whilst they didn't add to their lead, we were dangerous. We got the equaliser with twenty minutes to go. David Viana putting Cunnington through on goal to finish well. Austin Mitchell was taken off injured late on.
A true battering in every sense of the word. Our tired squad just looked done for today and we are going to have to find some strength to carry us over the line. Swindon also had three more goals disallowed for offside.
What a month. Our battered squad has been torn apart at times and we've really dropped down the table. I'm keen to look at the wider picture and acknowledge that we are practically safe from relegation which was the original goal. We are also well positioned if we can re-group and start picking up points again. The squad is absolutely spent and will benefit from a slightly kinder schedule in April. The sooner we put this run behind us the better.
Player of the Month
Tom Bonner. Has held the line admirably at times and despite fatigue has generally performed well.
A decent point at home to Oxford. Connor Smith scored an own goal to put us ahead but Kewsi Appiah equalised. Both sides had chances to win it but it ended level.
Another good point against decent opposition. Craig Mackail-Smith gave the away side a first half lead. We played excellently from then on but it seemed like the day might be fruitless. Tom Elliott got us a deserved equaliser late on and we came close to nicking the win after that. A point gained.
Sky Bet League 2
Newport County 1-2 Cambridge United
A decent performance and it's good to taste victory again. Tom Bonner opened the scoring in the first half. Pablo Mills scored an own goal to make it 2-0. Newport pulled one back late on through Shaun Jeffers.
Bristol Rovers secure automatic promotion to the Sky Bet League 1.
Sky Bet League 2
Cambridge United 3-3 Southend
A thrilling game. We could easily have lost, we could easily have won. Jack Marriott scored two goals in the first half an hour to put Southend 2-0 up. Tom Elliott reduced the lead to 2-1. Aswad Thomas was sent off just before half time for Southend to put the pressure on. Two late Ryan Donaldson goals seemed to have won the game but Fabio Aveni equalised in the 94th minute. A fair result overall.
A superb season overall as we comfortably remain in League 2. There were moments when it looked very feasible that we might even reach the play-offs but we paid for our poor end of season. We've got here with largely the same squad as last season which is very encouraging. We have some young players here that are improving all the time and it really shows. Of course next season we want to go one better and try and reach the play-offs but it will be as hard, if not harder, than this season. The poor financial state of the club means its unlikely we'll be able to pay any transfer fees so I'm going to dig around for the quality that can take us to the next step.
David Viana. The top two here were very close and it could easily have gone to Ryan. I've picked David on the basis that he contributed to slightly more goals than Ryan. 12 goals scored and 20 assists. It's a remarkable return and you only have to read back over our season to understand his contribution to our success.
Ryan Donaldson. Unlucky not to get number 1. Ryan contributed 15 goals and 14 assists. He was always a danger going forward and has thankfully had a relatively injury-free year. He's improving year on year and I hope it continues.
Adam Cunnington. He's a frustrating player at times but you know he's got quality when he chips in with 21 goals and 6 assists over the course of a season. I'm always questioning whether we need a new striker and at 28 years old, we will eventually. Each I do, Adam pipes up with a few goals as if to tell me not to be stupid. He's another whose contribution has been invaluable since I joined the club.
I am pleased to announce that the following players have all extended their contracts with us: Michael Hunt, David Viana, Adam Cunnington, Aleksandar Gogic, Joe Riley, Mitchell Austin, Luke Berry, Richard Tait, James Wilson, Dean O'Halloran, Bobby-Joe Taylor, Liam Hurst, Ryan Donaldson, Tom Elliott and Tom Bonner.
15-year-old Jed Manning has been promoted to the first team. Jed may not get many games in the upcoming season but I feel his development will be best served in the first team.
The club announce friendly fixtures against Brighton, Derby, Coventry, Luton, Blackpool and Charlton.
A decent performance and a good start to our fitness preparations. Everyone got 45 minutes today. There are a few concerns as Joe Riley, Tom Elliott and Ryan Donaldson all picked up knocks.
Ryan Donaldson is the only real casualty, he'll miss the next 3-4 weeks.
The club announce two more friendly fixtures against Notts County and Ashford United.
Pre-Season Friendly
Derby 2-1 Cambridge United
A really solid display and we were actually leading until the 88th minute. Two late goal sent us home in defeat but I'm very pleased with what I saw. Bobby-Joe Taylor was unfortunately taken off because of injury.
Roy Hodgson is sacked as England manager following the teams poor showing at Euro 2016. England finished 3rd behind Germany and Scotland without recording a win.
Central midfielder Andrew Wright has joined us on a free transfer. Andrew brings a wealth of experience to the squad following spells with Scunthrope, Grimsby and Morecambe.
Michael Hunt has joined Dartford for a second spell on loan. Michael enjoyed a decent season with them last year and I'm hoping he can continue that this year.
Pre-Season Friendly
Ashford United 0-5 Cambridge United
A good win and a good performance. Goals scored by Champion, Donaldson, Elliott, Cunnington and Austin.
Our pre-season preparations are complete and we head into the new season with anticipation and excitement. I am pleased to have added real quality and experience to our squad in Andrew Wright and Tom Pope. I will be hoping early on that they can both nail down a starting place in the team. Overall, I am very pleased with the shape of the squad. We have options in all areas of the pitch and with our numbers, most should get playing time this year. The targets this year are basically to improve on last season. We finish 12th last year and any improvement will mean us edging closer to the play-offs. We can take encouragement from last season and if we can continue that this year, I'm sure we'll do well.
An excellent way to start the season. Tom Pope got the winner on his debut, a penalty in the first half. Gillingham will feel hard done by not to get anything from the game but we won't mind!
Aleksandar Gogic has been called up for the USA U23 squad.
Capital One Cup First Round
Stevenage 2-1 Cambridge United AET
A really unfortunate defeat sends us out of the cup. We pushed them all the way but it just wasn't to be. David Viana got us off to a dream start making it 1-0 after ten minutes. Nathan Eccleston equalised in the second half and it went to extra time. Matt Ball struck what turned out to be the winner early in extra time. Some tired legs after this testing game.
Sky Bet League 2
Forest Green 0-4 Cambridge United
An excellent display away to newly promoted Forest Green. Four first half goals meant this match was over before half time. Tom Pope got two, Viana got one an Donaldson got one. Ben Gladwin was sent off late in the game for Forest Green.
We have been drawn at home to Ipswich in the Johnstone's Paint Trophy South First Round.
Sky Bet League 2
Cambridge United 2-1 Luton
Another decent win and its always nice to win a derby game in front of a sold out home crowd. David Viana put us ahead but Leon Clarke equalised just after the break. 15 minutes from the end, Liam Hurst popped up with a super winning goal.
A decent point away to a strong Coventry side. We had the better of the first half they had the better of the second. A fair point and we remain unbeaten.
Aleksandar Gogic has been called up for the USA U20 squad.
Sky Bet League 2
Newport County 1-1 Cambridge United
Another decent point away from home. Tom Pope gave us the lead from the penalty spot but Robbie Willmott equalised just before half time. We had the chances to take all three points but I'm content with a draw.
Johnstone's Paint Trophy South First Round
Cambridge United 0-2 Ipswich
A clinical Ipswich side made us pay tonight as we go out of the cup despite being the better side. Cory Galvin put the away side ahead early on. Tom Pope missed a penalty which would have drawn us level. Matty Pattison made sure of the result scoring a counter-attack goal late on.
We may have been dumped out of two cup competitions but I'm over the moon with our start in the league. Second in the table and one of two unbeaten teams left in the division. It's still early days but I'll be delighted if we can keep up this level of performance.
Player of the Month
Tom Pope. He's settled in well so far and has managed to keep Adam Cunnington and Tom Elliott out of the side. Four goals in seven games is a decent return and long may it continue.
A really poor showing today. Kal Naismith made it 1-0 in the first half and Bernard Mensah scored the second shortly after the break. Tom Elliott scored late on but we simply didn't do enough.
A decent win after some shaky results recently. Oldham were a threat all evening but two goals in the first 15 minutes of the game sealed the victory. The first by Viana, who was taken off injured before half time, and the second by Tom Pope.
An incredible game and I'm delighted to come away with all three points. We had a disastrous start as two goals from Paul Morris made it 2-0 to Cheltenham after just ten minutes. Greg Taylor pulled one back and Tom Bonner equalised moments later. With just seconds until half time, Ryan Harley scored an excellent free kick to put the home side ahead 3-2. It didn't take long for us to equalise, Tom Elliott making it 3-3 on 50 minutes. It really did look like a point each but Luke Berry popped up ten minutes from the end to put us ahead. Ryan Donaldson made sure of the points in injury time. A superb response to the early setback.
A decent point away to a Bury side just behind us in the league. Ryan Donaldson gave us the lead early on with a fierce strike from outside the box. Josh Carson equalised for Bury just after half time but Tom Elliott restored the lead moments later. Nathan Cameron was sent off for Bury with 25 minutes left but almost immediately they equalised through Bradley Orr. I refrained from pushing too hard for the victory. A draw was a good result and, having seen Bury's threat in attack, I didn't want to waste it all throwing men forward.
A very decent month overall. Despite the poor defeat at home to Accrington, we've responded brilliantly to end the month in 4thplace. It is way too early to speak of targets, I just want to take each game as it comes and see where we're at in February/March. I've seen enough to suggest that we can fight for a play-off spot, anything more will be a bonus.
Player of the Month
Ryan Donaldson. We've had some excellent performances this month from many players in the squad. But Ryan takes the award for me. I've been thoroughly impressed by Ryan on many an occasion since I took over and this month has been no different.
A massive three points against Mansfield who began the day above us in 2nd place. A Ryan Donaldson cross was turned in by David Viana to put us ahead after just 5 minutes. Tom Elliott, making his first start of the season, made it 2-0 just moments later. Gonzalo Barreto pulled one back for Mansfield on the half hour mark and that turned out to be it. The win moves us up to 2ndplace.
An unfortunate defeat and we can walk away with our heads held high. Jake Nicholson scored a brilliant free-kick late in the first half to make it 1-0 to Southend. Luke Berry equalised just after the break but Kelvin Etuhu restored the home side's lead immediately. We pushed for a deserved equalise but just couldn't finish our chances.
Tom Champion has agreed a one-year extension to his contract, which was due to expire at the end of this season. Tom has lost his place in the starting line-up this season to Andrew Wright but has proved to be an excellent replacement when called upon.
Sky Bet League 2
Cambridge United 3-0 Dagenham & Redbridge
An excellent result in the end. We dominated the game throughout but struggled to finish chances in the first half. Thankfully, a delightful Bobby-Joe Taylor chip sent us into half time ahead. Tom Pope was introduced at half time and put an end to our struggles. Two goals for him in the second half looks to have secured his return to the starting line-up.
We have been draw away to Exeter in the FA Cup First Round. To be played at the end of this month.
Sky Bet League 2
Swindon 1-1 Cambridge United
A brilliant result against the league leaders. Swindon had the chances to win the game but we defended well and took our chance when it came. Sam Matthews gave them the lead but we equalised before half time through David Viana. Very pleased today.
A strange game but one which I am unhappy to draw. Alfreton began the day in 23rd place so I was expecting a win. The had the better of the first half but we went ahead thirty minutes in through Tom Bonner. Alfreton were reduced to ten men just before the break and I was hoping to really push on afterwards. We did but couldn't finish the numerous chances we created. They made us pay when, with ten minutes left, Emmanuel Dieseruvwe got a breakaway equaliser. We've got no-one but ourselves to blame for not picking up three points.
An extremely flattering scoreline for Exeter here. The game was practically over at half time as David Viana scored two and set up Tom Bonner to make it 3-0 at the break. Devarn Green pulled one back but Luke Berry restored the 3 goal lead. Exeter scored 2 more in injury time but it really was never in doubt. Tom Bonner was removed at half time because of injury, I hope it is not too bad.
A good month really. We've finished where we started the month in the league and if that continues then I'll be delighted. There's just 9 points separating Mansfield at the top and Southend in 12th place so the league is still very tight. It wouldn't take much at this stage to drop fair way down the table. I've once again seen enough this month to be encouraged about our chances but I'm certainly not going to get carried away.
Player of the Month
Tom Bonner. Despite some suspect defending at times, Tom has a knack of popping up with goals when needed most. He scored twice this month and once last month and generally captains the side following Ian Miller's demotion to the bench. When he's good, he's really good.
