The last day of the Romanian season was upon us with some mouth watering ties due to be played out. In Liga I, Dinamo Bucharest lost out on the title to their bitter rivals Steaua Bucharest. Dinamo led the Romanian title chase by a single point going into their last game against Unirea Urziceni, but managed to lose the game 1-0. A 2-2 draw for Steaua against Astra Poliesti was enough to clinch the top spot thanks to their head-to-head record against Dinamo.

Meanwhile, in Liga II (group 2), it was going to be a nail biting day for the managers of CS Otopeni, U Cluj and FC Drobeta. All three teams were in with a shout of promotion, Otopeni were in the driving seat but faced a tough game against the already promoted FC Arges.

Here’s how it all unfolded...

15mins
0-1 Mioveni v U Cluj
With the match only 15 minutes old Ilie Baicu tripped U Cluj’s Michael Baird in the box. Referee, Istvan Kovacs, pointed to the spot and Baird cooly put the ball into the bottom left corner.

40mins
0-0 CS Otopeni v Arges
Problems for Otopeni as they saw their creative midfielder, Florin Manea, fall awkwardly on his arm after making a clearance. Manea was later diagnosed as having a hairline fracture of the wrist.

45mins
1-1 Mioveni v U Cluj
U Cluj manager, Dan Lake, was infuriated with the referee as he added more than two minutes injury time at halftime at the stadium Dacia. He had even more reason to be angry when Mihai Vintila scored his seventh goal of the season.

48mins
0-1 CS Otopeni v Arges
Shortly into the second half Arges took the lead at Otopeni thanks to Ivorian striker Youssouf Kamara. Mircea Stan opened up the home defence with a sublime pass and Kamara was on hand to put away his 14th goal of the season.

50mins
1-0 Rm. Valcea v Drobeta
Drobeta went looking for the goal that could get them promoted in the second half as news broke that their rivals were struggling to impose themselves. When the goal did come, however, it wasn’t scored by the men in blue. Valcea’s goal came courtesy of their star striker Tiago Santos.

63mins
0-2 CS Otopeni v Arges
Arges further dented Otopeni’s promotion hopes as they extended their lead on 63 minutes. Iulian Tames scored the goal with a freekick from the edge of the 18 yard box.

79mins
1-2 CS Otopeni v Arges
The home side started to find their rhythm and the goal came during a spell of intense pressure being applied on Arges’ defenders. Gabriel Caramarin lofted a corner into the box and Marian Vatavu rose to head it home. News quickly came from the bench that U Cluj were drawing and all the players needed was one more goal! Meanwhile, U Cluj were struggling to hold back relegation candidates Mioveni as the home side came forward in waves.

90mins
1-2 CS Otopeni v Arges
0-1 Rm. Valcea v Drobeta
1-1 Mioveni v U Cluj
Nerves showed for all the promotion candidates on the last day, none of them got took all three points and only U Cluj and CS Otopeni even managed to score a goal! In the end U Cluj’s draw against Mioveni was enough to secure them second spot ahead of Otopeni. With ten minutes to go it could have been so different with Otopeni pushing their opponents hard whilst U Cluj did just enough not to buckle.

On winning promotion Dan Lake was quoted as saying “this is the best day of my career so far, I never stopped believing even if some sections of the media had written us off!” He also found time to pay tribute to his players and staff, “they are a fantastic bunch of lads who deserve to be playing in the top flight. This promotion is for everyone connected to this great club from the girls in the canteen to the chairman!”

Lake and his players should enjoy the party now, because life in the top flight next season will be tough.

The last few games of the season were played out with a more adventurous 4-4-2 as I had nothing to lose, in fact, I would have settled for 3rd or 4th as I intended on building the squad over the first season or two.

The team for the closing games (when all available) was:

By the end of the season I’d identified my best players as centre-half Zsolt Szilagyi, winger Charles Taylor and striker Flavius Bad, providing the spine of my team.

Thanks Jack, appreciated your support through out the thread mate!

Excellent mate and I loved the last day run in. :D

Cheers Chris, glad you enjoyed it!

It was tense scrolling down the page. I wasn't sure what was going to happen though!

It was pretty tense watching the game 'live'... I was positive that Otopeni were going to eqaulise or that Mioveni would score a winner against me!

Will be starting the 2010/11 season shortly... in the meantime, I've been creating some Romanian club and competition logo's.

If anyone else is interested then let me know and I'll consider loading them up to the site (but please bear in mind that this is my first time dabbling with FM graphic's... that said, not sure there'll be that much demand anyways! ;))

As the excitement of the 2009/10 campaign draws to a close the U Cluj board make a shock announcement: “It is with regret that the board must declare a loss of € 1,4M for the last financial year, a staggering 300 percent of the club’s turnover. The board have identified that high wage costs totalling € 1,1M over the season, were one of the main contributors to the losses.”

It’s been a quiet pre-season for U Cluj, largely due to the club’s difficult financial situation. Despite previously expressing an interest in adding a new centre-half to his squad, Dan Lake played down the the lack of transfer activity saying “the squad that got us promoted to Liga I is good enough to keep us there as well.”

There were changes in the backroom staff, however, most notably Dan Apolzan replacing Marius Popescu as assistant manager. And Lake did succeed in bringing two players to the club on trial, defender Dan Matei and former Romanian international midfielder Marian Aliutã.

The pre-season games brought with them a mixed bag results for the Sepcile Rosii, including a 4-0 drubbing at the hands of Dinamo Bucharest.

won 2-0 v CSO Ovidiu
won 2-0 v Vit. Guimarães
lost 0-4 v Dinamo Bucharest
won 1-0 v Primorje

Breaking news: former Romanian international midfielder Marian Aliutã has joined U Cluj after agreeing a two year deal. Aliutã was a free agent and had been on trial at Clujana.

2010/2011 SEASON BEGINS...

Good luck Dan, I believe you can stay up and hopefully sort yourself financially, I am guessing you got no budget?

Cheers Jack, got 30k for transfers and an extra 6k in the wage budget (not gonna get me a lot!)

There are some young players who might come through (watch out in the posts for George Negura and Andrei Voican!)... I need them too come through as I have promised the board I will avoid relegation!

Life in Liga I started for U Cluj with a home game against Dan Petrescu’s UEFA Cup qualifiers Unirea Urziceni...

lost 1-2 v Unirea Urziceni
In a surprisingly close encounter at Clujana, Unirea Urziceni managed to sneak a narrow 2 - 1 victory over U Cluj. Dan Lake’s team did not embarrass themselves and fought hard in a game that most expected to be a one sided affair.
Marius Bilaşco scored from the spot after U Cluj’s Zsolt Szilagyi gave away a penalty. Striker Flavius Băd then equalised for the home team just after the break with a fine header from point-blank range. Bilaşco scored again on 70 minutes with a thumping header making it 2-1, but more drama was yet to come. In the 84th minute U Cluj were awarded a penalty and substitute Michael Baird stepped up to take it, but there was to be no glory as he struck it well wide.

won 1-0 v FC Arges
U Cluj recorded their first points of the new season against another newly promoted team, FC Arges. The first noteworthy incident of the match proved to be controversial, with U Cluj seeing Zsolt Szilagyi’s headed goal disallowed for pushing. U Cluj finally took the lead when midfielder Charles Taylor scored a real poacher's effort on 44 minutes.

drew 1-1 v FC Sportul
CFM Universitatea Cluj-Napoca were held to a draw by FC Sportul Studenţesc Bucharest in a close-fought Liga I match played at Clujana. Sportul deservedly took on 59 minutes, but substitute striker Michael Baird equalised for U Cluj just two minutes after coming on.

won 1-0 v Sebis (N, 4th Round of Romanian Cup)
The score line ultimately flattered Naţional Sebiş in this Romanian Cup Fourth Round game, U Cluj could and should have scored more than their single goal. And that only came with the game nearing an end, it was Michael Baird who scored a powerful effort to give U Cluj the lead on 89 minutes.

won 3-2 v Astra
A real thriller on a fine summer's evening at Astra, with Astra 2009 2-1 up on 90 minutes nobody foresaw what happened next. First Andrei Voican, making his first team debut as a substitute, scored the equaliser on 90 minutes. Then Tunisian Aymen Abdennour gave away a soft penalty in injury time, Rares Soporan stepped up and sent the U Cluj fans into raptures as he tucked it away under the body of the Astra keeper.
Astra 2009 find themselves in the relegation places after 4 games without a win, while U Cluj sit in the lofty position of 9th.

won 1-0aet v Dinamo Bucharest II (5th Round of Romanian Cup)
U Cluj could be forgiven for thinking this wasn’t their night when first they had a good penalty shout turned down and then a 67th minute strike questionably chalked off.
With both sides making plenty of errors but neither taking command of the match, it went into extra time. In the 110th minute Flavius Băd put everyone out of their misery by scoring what would prove to be the winner. U Cluj had the better possession but struggled to stay onside when going forward, resulting in broken sequences of play. After the game Lake was quoted as saying “that match was not an enjoyable one, I’m surprised that any fan stayed to the end!”

Lake was handed a relatively easy draw in the sixth round of the cup against FC Politehnica Iasi, who were relegated from Liga I last year.

Great result against Dinamo Dan, hopefully we can see more of the same, good start to your league campaign mate

After four games in the 2010/11 season U Cluj were occupying 9th place and holding their own, although they have yet to win a league game in front of their own fans.

lost 2-4 v FC Timişoara
An emphatic win for FC Timisoara in a game that never really saw U Cluj threaten. FC Timişoara’s goals came courtesy of Sadat Bukari, Demba, Gigel Bucur and Bogdan Onut. Despite U Cluj replying through Flavius Băd and Charles Taylor to make it 1-1 and 2-3 resepectively, it always seemed that FC Timişoara could raise them game at any given moment.

won 1-0 v Politehnica Iaşi (6th round of Romanian Cup)
Despite being reduced to nine men U Cluj battled bravely to overcome in this 6th round cup tie. Striker Michael Baird scored what proved to be the winning goal in the 15th minute. The match became increasingly ugly and U Cluj were often prevented from playing as they wanted to due to the number of fouls committed by their enthusiastic opponents. It was a surprise then, when it was a U Cluj player, Bogdan Unguruşan who was sent off after being shown his second yellow on 58 minutes. He was joined in the changing room by left-back Fabian Teuşan on 79 minutes, when he also received his second yellow.

For the third year in succession, cup holders FC CFR 1907 Cluj will play against neighbouring club CFM Universitatea Cluj-Napoca in the Romanian Cup. In 2008 CFR Cluj won on penalties after a thrilling 3-3 draw, whilst last year a close game ended 1-0 to CFR Cluj. The last time the two sides met their fans fought in and around the stadium, and a number of arrests were made. The game will be played at Clujana on Sunday 24th October 2010.

drew 1-1 v FC Farul
Striker Flavius Băd got U Cluj off to a flyer by scoring a fine header from point-blank range on 2 minutes. Young midfielder Cosmin Matei then equalised for Farul after 51 minutes with a freekick. U Cluj were controversially disallowed a goal in the 77th minute and it ended 1-1. After the game U Cluj winger Charles Taylor said he was convinced that Flavius Băd was onside when the ball was played and that the goal should have been given.
Manager Dan Lake went further with his after match comments, “The referee and his linesmen changed the game massively, the quality of the officials in this league is a joke!"Lake was warned (not for the first time) for his inflammatory remarks by the Football Association.

lost 1-4 v FC Braşov
Midfielder Nicolae Grigore gave FC Braşov the lead with a powerful effort just five minutes before halftime. And they were 2-0 up on the 49th minute when striker Vlad Bujor scored with a well placed shot. An error from Cristian Munteanu allowed young U Cluj winger George Negură to score from close range, but then Braşov shifted up a gear and took control of the game. Egyptian Shikabala scored after 65 minutes and three minutes later Bujor popped up again with an unstoppable shot from close range.

After the defeat to FC Braşov the Supporter’s Club spokesperson Cătălin Pancu said that the fans were disappointed with U Cluj's heavy 1 - 4 Romanian First League defeat against FC Braşov. He claimed that Zsolt Szilagyi and Flavius Băd were the main targets for the fans' criticism, some even going as far as to suggest that other players should be given their chance in the starting line-up. Dan Lake's side are currently 12th in the Romanian Liga I with 8 points from their first 7 matches.

Breaking news: U Cluj Manager set for move to the Czech Republic? Czech first division side Brno are believed to be targeting current U Cluj Manager Dan Lake to fill their vacant managerial post. Lake has been with U Cluj for 16 months.

Two Czech first divison sides have approached me to take over as manager...

Slovan Liberic who won the Czech title as recently as 2006 and came 4th last season. They currently lie in 16th place in the league, have good training facilities, good youth facilities but no academy.

Brno are currently in 15th place in the league after finishing 3rd last term, their highest ever league finish. They have okay finances, average training facilities and a good youth facilities with an academy.

Should I stay loyal to U Cluj despite being hamstrung in the transfer market by their financial situation? Or should I attempt to further my reputation in the Czech first division with one of their bigger names or a team just starting to make a name for themselves? oO)
