How do you make your stories so interesting? God, for a moment I thought this was real! You're doing amazingly well, and that tactics change was amazing! Keep it up, and, (dunno if you're interested) after 10 games in Slovenia Second division, I'm 1st =)

Thanks for the support, I'm really pleased that you're enjoying it. When I started out I figured that I'd try and make the story read like a series of 'newspaper' reports, and I've been getting some pictures from U Cluj's official site to add a touch of realism. I've added a few 'manager's comments' but everything else in the story is as it happened. It's good to know that it's having the desired effect!

Are you enjoying the slovenian league? 1st is a fantastic result, what team are you playing as?

I've learnt a lot about the Romanian League as I've gone along, the differences to the English system are interesting, they have a two tiered second divison and each Liga 2 group gets redrawn with every new season which mixes the teams up. It also seems that any team that doesn't reach a certain number of points (25) by the end of the season in Liga 1 gets docked points next year!

nice mate

hope things improve in the league for u....some nice results by the way

Cheers cuddles, just hope I can keep the cup run going, that would be really something!

Hey Dan.
Loving the story so far, and good choice in staying at the club and not leaving. Still thinking that you can take this club further up the league, Europe a possibility? Think so. But good luck.

Hoping im getting FM for xmas and gonna start a similar story, possibly in the lower leagues of Spain; possibly with Ejido.

Thanks buddy, I'm really pleased to get such positive feedback! Europe would be nice but I'm aiming to keep us up this season... I've set the team a target of 40 points, reckon this will see me safe for sure.

It is an 'east european adventure' so I can't guarrantee that I'll stay with U Cluj if the right offer comes in, always ready to try furthering my reputation in a new country! But for now the 'red caps' are the team for me!

Look forward to reading your Ejido story in the future!

i reckon the offers will be flooding in for you

Well, I'm playing as Bela Krajina... They were supposed to finish 5th, so i guess i'm doing ok... The one thing that really struck me was that the Eastern European leagues seem to be much more agressive than the EPL or other western divisions... I can't go a match without getting at least 3 yellows... And great work, I still think this the most interesting and best written story around :)

I seem to pick up yellow's easily too... sure isn't a forgiving league for aggressive tactics! :O

The winter break saw two new players arrive at Clujana and three fringe players leave. Manager Dan Lake bolstered his defensive options by signing Serbian defender Dragan Zarkovic on loan until the end of the season and Ivorian centre-back Kouassi N’Goran from club African Sports for a paltry €22k. Cosmin Iuhas, Adrian Popa and Brazilian Baiano found themselves surplus to requirements and were shipped out for a combined fee of €170k.

The club were rocked when goalkeeper Sebastian Hutan was the subject of much interest from Rapid Bucharest. Hutan did nothing to dispel fears that he might leave when he hinted that he felt ready to move on, his manager had different ideas, however. Dan Lake told worldsoccer.com “I am not about to let Sebastian go, we need to hang onto our best players so that this club can progress. I assure you that Sebastian’s ambitions match that of the club.”
Hutan has played every game under Lake’s charge and is considered a key member of the U Cluj squad.

With the season restarting on 5th March 2011 the U Cluj fans were in an expectant mood.

won 3-1 v FC Arges
Another highly polished performance from the CFM Universitatea Cluj-Napoca players saw their team run out 3 - 1 winners over FC Argeş Piteşti at Clujana. U Cluj dominated possession and finally took the lead when striker Flavius Băd scored early in the second half, and improving striker Andrei Voican doubled U Cluj's lead with a calm finish on 55 minutes. Despite Youssouf Kamara getting a goal for the visitors after 62 minutes, midfielder Adrian Ionescu put the game out of sight with a powerful effort from the edge of the penalty area on 87 minutes.

lost 0-2 v Unirea Urziceni
It was a poor showing from the Sepcile Rosii in this one-sided game as first Dacian Varga breached their defence, and then U Cluj captain Zsolt Szilagyi put the ball past his own keeper with a miserable back pass.

drew 1-1 v Sportul
Midfielder Charles Taylor gave U Cluj the lead with a placed shot in the 23rd minute, before Sportul captain Costin Curelea equalised on 74 minutes. In this, otherwise, unremarkable perfoemance.

won 3-0 v Astra 2009
In the first half of the game Szilagyi scored from the penalty spot after Oketola’s foul , striker Flavius Băd made it 2-0 with an absolute rocket from 20 yards. On 53 minutes the excellent Adrian Ionescu completed the rout with a powerful effort from the edge of the area which blasted against the inside of the post before hitting the back of the net on 53 minutes and from then on Astra 2009 never looked like recovering.
These two teams will met again at the end of the month in the first leg of the Romanian Cup semi-final, and it doesn’t bode well for the Astra management.

drew 1-1 v FC Timisoara
After 21 games of the season last year’s 4th place team, FC Timisoara, found themselves at the wrong end of the table. With the Timisoara team apparently scared of losing and the U Cluj players keeping on eye on next week’s cup semi-final, it was somewhat inevitable that the match would end in a draw. Adrian Ionescu scored for U Cluj and promising youngster Ivan Maras got the equaliser. U Cluj were nearly gifted a goal on 50 minutes through Mohamed Oulhaj's lapse in concentration but they failed to capitalise on the opportunity presented to them.

lost 2-3 v Astra 2009 (SF of the Romanian Cup, 1st leg)
After recently taking the Astra Ploieşti team apart in a 3-0 win at Clujana, the U Cluj players were brimming with confidence, but this only served to make them somewhat complacent.
Striker Alexandru Bălţoi got Astra 2009 off to a flyer by scoring with a close range finish after just 3 minutes. An error from stopper Sebastian Huţan then allowed Georgian Păun to score with a free header and when, on 85 minutes, Bălţoi added his 2nd goal of the game it appeared that U Cluj’s cup dream was in tatters.
Young striker Andrei Voican had been omitted from the U Cluj starting line up in favour of Australian Michael Baird. He came on in the second half and it was this substitution that was to give the U Cluj fans hope. No sooner had U Cluj kicked off after their opponents third goal when Voican latched onto a rebound to score on 87 minutes. He then gave his team a real lifeline when, 2 minutes into added on time, he nabbed a second away goal. Could there be yet more drama to come in the second leg next month?

Good to see you not losing much, I'm sure you will see off Astra in the second leg, is it away or at home?

In other news...

Well I guess March is a quiet time for him!

Good to see you not losing much, I'm sure you will see off Astra in the second leg, is it away or at home?

At home for the second leg, I was confident after beating them 3-0 in the league... but now? :S

Nice to know I'm not the only one getting loads of yellows =) But it's not only with agressive tactics... Even on light tackling... Just played a friendly against some Romanian team... Go 6 yellows and 2 reds... But they got the same... I still won though..4-1 :)

Dan, you're doing ****** marvelous mate! A great read so far. I just saw your private message, I'm so glad my tactic is working as well for you as it did with me!

Keep up the good work, and props for the appreciation towards my tactic!

This is amazing. Well done you are obviously an amazing manager! (H)

As April's round of league matches got underway it seemed that the U Cluj players had their minds on a different competition...

drew 1-1 v FC Brasov
This match was certainly not one for the purists with neither side able to keep the errors out of their game. The first incident of real note came on 57 minutes as U Cluj were denied claims by Marian Aliutã for a penalty. FC Braşov were nearly handed the lead in the 63rd minute through Valentin Buşcă's lapse in concentration but failed to capitalise.
FC Braşov finally took the lead through Romeo Surdu's strike on 73 minutes, but U Cluj were given a penalty after Zarko Markovic brought down George Negura as he was clean through on goal. Michael Baird scored from the spot and the game finished 1-1.

lost 0-1 v FC Farul
Striker Chico gave Farul the lead with a powerful close range header in the 20th minute. Chico's goal proved to be the winner as both teams had chances but failed to hit the back of the net again.

lost 2-3 vs Vaslui
FC Cluj have now gone 5 games without a win, 4 of which have come in the league. Many pundits are putting this poor form down to the team's cup run, "all the players want to be in the squad for the semi-final and some will be worried about injury. The distraction of a cup run definately effects the player's commitment between cup games" said one former footballer.
Hesitation from Cristian Sabou allowed striker Ionut Mazilu to sneak in to score Vaslui's first goal. Things went from bad to worse for U Cluj as midfielder Dan Bucşă earned himself an early bath for a nasty two footed challenge on 25 minutes.
Striker Robert Zeher then doubled FC Vaslui's lead with a real poacher's effort on 26 minutes, but U Cluj were given a glimmer of hope when veteran defender Andrés Scotti turned a cross into his own net. Milos Pavlovic made the scoreline 3-1 in Vaslui's favour in the 65th minute and, although Andrei Voican pulled one back in the 88th minute, Vaslui were good value for their win. After the game Lake's anger seemed to be directed at his midfielder Busca, who was sent off in the match. When asked about any possible repercussions from the incident Lake replied "He was stupid and he will be dropped until he can prove to me that he has seen sense." Rumour has it that Busca will also be fined one week's wages.

By mid April, with nine games to go of the 2010/11 season, U Cluj find themselves in 9th place. Although they are are six places above the drop zone the gap is only 5 points, and the U Cluj manager will approaching the next few games with some anxiety.

Before that though, the Sepcile Rosii had a cup semi-final to contend with...

won 1-0 v Astra 2009 (SF of the Romanian Cup, 2nd Leg)
CFM Universitatea Cluj-Napoca were in control here thsi evening against a distinctly average Astra Ploieşti side. Before the match U Cluj manager, Dan Lake, promised changes and he was true to his word. Ivorian Koussai N'goran replaced the inexperienced Cristian Sabou at centre-back, and there was a switch in midfield as Lake moved toward a diamond formation designed to make the team more responsible defensively. Marian Aliuta returned to the side at the tip of the diamond and Rares Soporan replaced the suspended Dan Busca in the more defensive role.
The change was effective as U Cluj commanded the midfield and bossed the tempo of the game. Soporan had to keep his composure to score from the spot after Abdennour gave away a penalty. This was the only goal of the game and U Cluj won the tie on away goals, but in truth U Cluj never looked like losing as they had 54% of the possession and created 16 shots on goal.
U Cluj will play FC Timisoara in the final, who beat AFC Rapid Bucharest 5-3 over two legs. FC Timisoara have been the losing side in the last two cup finals whilst U Cluj haven't reached this stage of the competition since 1965, when they won.

U Cluj players celebrate the goal that put them through to the final

Can the U Cluj players ensure safety in the remaining league games, which include matches against all three Bucharest teams and local rivals CFR Cluj, or will they get caught in a relegation battle?

Will you be looking to move jobs anytime soon?

Not sure I'd wanna move before I'd had a crack at the cup in June, and if I win that then it's european football here next season (which will improve my prospects of getting a big move no end). That said, I am keeping one eye on the job centre and job security screens all the time, just not much movement since I was offered the two jobs in the Czech league.

Great news with win over Astra Dan, good luck in the final, I'm sure Cluj will find some form in the league soon.

With their place in the Romania Cup final secure, Dan Lake called on his U Cluj players to “stand up and be counted” in the remaining nine League fixtures.

lost 3-4 v Gloria Bartista
A seven goal thriller that saw U Cluj extend their run without a league win to 6 games. Neither side concentrated on defence and the goals flowed freely at both ends, however, not every fan will have gone home happy at the entertainment provided. Goals from Daniel Okechukwu, Sergey Kislyak and a brace from Tibor Moldovan helped Gloria Bistriţa to victory, whilst U Cluj’s three goals came from Flavius Băd (2) and a Nikola Jozic own goal.
When asked for his thoughts on the match U Cluj manager Dan Lake replied “in a game of seven goals somebody has to be on the losing side.”

lost 0-2 v Steaua Bucharest
Nobody really expected U Cluj to come away from the capital with anything from this game, but their fifth consecutive defeat did nothing to ease the relegation worries of their fans. Steaua were dominate and finally took the lead after 41 minutes with a real poacher’s goal from midfielder Dayro Moreno. Moreno scored his, and Steaua’s, second on 52 minutes when gifted a free header in the box. U Cluj’s Rares Soporan was carried off on a stretcher with the game only twenty minutes old. The midfielder had only recently returned to the side and he will surely now miss the Romanian Cup final on June 5th 2011.

Stretchered off!

drew 0-0 v International
Despite having the lion’s share of the possession U Cluj could not turn this superiority into a win.
In midweek, a national newspaper criticised the U Cluj manager Dan Lake for his tactics. “His team always lack balance, 4-4-2 and they are over cautious inviting teams onto them, 4-3-1-2 and they commit themselves high up the pitch, easy prey for good counter attacking sides.” Lake responded by saying “if bad tactics get you promoted, into the top half of Liga I and to a cup final, then they’ll do for me!”

won 3-1 v Rapid Bucharest
A deserved 3 - 1 win for the Sepcile Rosii over AFC Rapid Bucharest this evening was greeted with delight by the victorious team's fans and players alike. Although asriker Lucian Răduţă gave Rapid the lead in the 27th minute, it was Cluj midfielder Dan Bucşă who stole the plaudits as he first scored the equaliser after 29 minutes and then was the driving force in a fantastic win. Charles Taylor made it 2-1 from the penalty spot and Bogdan Dolha completed the scoring for U Cluj with a close range effort on 45 minutes. This was Dan Busca’s first appearance since getting sent off against FC Vaslui and he had something to prove to his manager and the fans.

drew 3-3 v CFR Cluj
It was goals galore as the Cluj-Napoca derby ended in a 3-3 draw.
In an enthralling match which saw both sides throw caution to the wind, ultimately it was football that came out the winner. Midfielder Adrian Ropotan got CFR Cluj off to a fantastic start after 3 just minutes, Bogdan Mara then doubled CFR Cluj's lead on 16 minutes but the scoreline flattered the visitors somewhat.
Bogdan Dolha scored with a good header from just inside the six-yard box, before Rade Veljovic finished a wonderful passage of play from CFR Cluj in the 37th minute. At half time CFR Cluj went in the happier team, leading 3-1, but U Cluj had fought hard and the score-line was flattering.
In the second half, U Cluj duly benefited from their committed approach and young striker Andrei Voican pulled one back for U Cluj after 66 minutes after a scramble in the box. On 75 minutes Adrian Ionescu beat the CFR ‘keeper at his near post to equalise for U Cluj, his fifth league goal of the season.

With just 4 games remaining, U Cluj have managed to amass 38 points and lie 9th in the table. Although not clear from the threat of relegation there should be enough about the team to secure Liga I football for another year at least.

Good work mate.

Looking at the league table I think 40points will be enought for stay in the first division and u almost reach them, with 4 matches in advance to the end.

Yr chairman will be proud of u ^^

Cheers dude, I definately agree that 40 points has got to be the target, if I can win one of the last four games then we'll stay up and can build from there... who knows maybe we'll bring european football to U Cluj if we can win the cup!

good job mate ...
hope you can won the cup final ... :D

Thanks for the support James, winning the cup would be a great achievement in only my second season at the club. Hopefully doing so will put me on the radar for some of the bigger jobs in this continent... Russian or Ukrainian Premier Leagues perhaps? (It sure would be nice to have some money to spend!)

Will be posting the run in to the 2010/11 season later tonight!

stay on this team at least for another season ... and i believe that you could attract more bigger club ...
