Irwin Set To Return To Football!
15/7/12

View attachment 344816

Ex-Manchester United defender Denis Irwin has been speculated to be nearing a return to the game after 8 years since retiring from playing. Irwin, who played over 700 professional games, has been out of the game since he retired in 2004, now currently working for the media and MUTV.

Irwin played for Leeds, Oldham, Man United and Wolves and represented Ireland 56 times at senior level.

There is no idea who he is going to but with the Portsmouth, Oldham, Coventry, Blackburn and Swindon jobs all up for grabs at the moment, surely he is set for a return to English football!

Crisis hit Portsmouth have today confirmed that they have offered Man United legend Denis Irwin to be the new manager at Fratton Park. The club have suffered a number of financial blows in the last few years which have contributed to their downfall from the Premier League to League 1.

Yesterday we reported that Irwin was set to return to football as a manager and the most likely destination would be England but will he be able to steer the sinking ship back to the heights where they once where if he takes over?

In a shock turn of events, Dundee United have ditched new manager Jackie McNamara and hired ex Man Utd defender Denis Irwin as their new manager. McNamara, who left Partick Thistle to join the SPL club, was sacked by TEXT by chairman Stephen Thompson for an unknown reason.

Yesterday, we reported that Irwin was all set to join crisis club Portsmouth after the offered him the job but he his agent has confirmed that "a better offer had come up".

Irwin will now lead United into the new SPL campaign and also the Europa League, which the club will enter at the Third Qualifying Round.

Squad Summary

Goalkeepers

Radoslaw Cierzniak- The best keeper at the club but is not in my eyes good enough to be a number one!

Steve Banks- Experienced keeper but a waste of wages as he is on 1.2k p/w! He will be off as soon as I get someone else in.

Defenders

Keith Watson- First choice RB and will be for a number of years to come.

Barry Douglas- A decent LB with not bad potential but nothing special. Will hopefully be able to bring in a better LB through time although it is not my number on target!

Brian McLean- My 3rd choice CB behind Dillon and Gunning. A good backup who will be in and out of the team and will be able to do a job.

Sean Dillon- Solid CB who is reaching his peak and will be vital in defence.

Gavin Gunning- A future Ireland regular who will be hard to hold onto in the next 12-18 months but will form a solid partnership with Dillon in that time!

Paddy Barrett- Youngster who has great potential and may come in to replace Gunning if he's sold. Will hopefully go out on loan this season.

Willo Flood- First choice RM at the moment but can also play CM. A key player with bags of eperience.

Stuart Armstrong- Will be a star in the next few years, just hoping I can hold onto him! Hopefully he can hold down a place in the centre and be a key player over the season.

John Rankin- An experienced CM who will be my attacking threat from the centre.

Richie Ryan- A great CM who will hopefully shine over the next season or two.

Mark Millar- No good to us, will be punted!

Gary Mackay-Steven- He will play LM or AML, depending on the formation, will be a key player and it will be hard to hang onto him. If he does go, we will get a good sum for him!

Rudi Skacel- Solid AMC who will be key when we play 4-2-3-1 but wont be first or second choice at CM.

Strikers

Ryan Dow- Young backup who has no real potential but will do a job if needed.

Jon Daly- Big target man who will form the leathal partnership with Russell. A player who we will hold onto!

Johnny Russell- One of the best young strikers in Britain! He will bang in a number of goals and wont be leaving unless we get a few million!
