December 2010- Fantastic.

December was the biggest challenge of the season for Exeter so far. Tough away challenges against Charlton & Sheffield Wednesday, followed by a derby match against Plymouth Argyle. The month was to be rounded off with tricky matches against Hartlepool, Huddersfield and Bournemouth. Could Exeter do the impossible, and have a perfect December?

V Charlton- The Valley- nPower League 1- Loss 1-0 :
Exeter put in a valiant performance, away against playoff-pushers Charlton. The Addicks took the match, after Scott Wagstaff tapped in from close range. Exeter attacked all match, and were unlucky not to take home a point down the M5. The Grecians have all the reasons to keep their chins high.

V Sheffield Wednesday- Hillsborough- nPower League 1- Win 1-0 [Harley] :
After coming so close last week, Exeter secured a famous away victory, at Sheffield Wednesday. Ryan Harley scored from 10 yards out, after being put through by Giles Sunu, and that goal was enough for Exeter. The Grecian's defence held firm from Wednesdays attackers, and Joe Kinnear will be more than impressed with the 3 points.

V Plymouth Argyle- St James Park- nPower League 1- Win 2-1 [Taylor & Nardiello] :
The first Devon Derby in 9 years, and my my how it was worth the wait! For the full report, see below :)

V Hartlepool- Victoria Park- nPower League 1- Loss 3-2 [Nardiello & Noble] :
Exeter were sent crashing back down to earth after a poor loss against Hartlepool. Exeter took the lead after Daniel Nardiello found the net from a tight angle, with 32 minutes on the clock. After previous displays, Joe Kinnear would of been confident of clinging onto to that lead- But early in the 2nd half, Anthony Sweeney lobbed over keeper Artur Krysiak for 1-1. Goals from Adam Boyd, put Hartelpool in a comfortable 3-1 position. David Noble scored a consolation goal for the Grecians, 2 minutes from time. Joe Kinnear will be dissapointed, after the previous results Exeter have produced.

V Huddersfield- St James Park- nPower League 1- Loss 2-1 [Sunu] :
Huddersfield defeated Exeter once more, this time at St James Park. Huddersfield were firmly the better side, and were unlucky not to defeat Exeter by more goals. Theo Robinson opened Huddersfield's account, with a brilliant solo effort after 14 minutes. Exeter though, pegged back the visitors. Giles Sunu rounding the keeper, after good play from Conor Clifford. Huddersfield won the match though after a stunning Joey Gudjohnnson strike from the edge of the area. Joe Kinnear may well be concerned, after 2 defeats in a row.

V Bournemouth- Dean Court- nPower League 1- Draw 0-0 :
Exeter once again were lucky to take a point on the road, as both sides drew a blank at Dean Court. The Grecians could only manage 2 shots through-out the 90 minutes, with a weakend field due to fitness issues. Joe Kinnear will be sure to add to his squad, during January.

A Fairly solid December for Exeter. Fantastic wins against Sheffield Wednesday & Local rivals Plymouth Argyle will be the main positives for Joe Kinnear. Exeter showed their spirit away against Charlton, and cut out any freak heavy losses. Kinnear said back in August, the months to Christmas would decide how Exeter's season would pan out, and it looks like a Playoff Push for 2011.

The Tactics Corner- Exeter's win at Sheffield Wednesday was built around a solid defence, and a Counter-Attacking performance. Exeter stayed firm at the back, and then broke at every oppurtunity. It worked well, and it will surely be seen, when Exeter visit tougher League 1 opposition, later on in the season.

Exeter Secure Famous Derby Victory
Exeter City 2 - 1 Plymouth Argyle

Exeter City fans were singing in the streets, after a famous victory, in a thrilling match at St James Park. It was the first time the sides met in over 9 years, in the so called "Devon Expressway Derby". There was a heavy policing force at St James Park, to stamp out any violence between the sections of fans. Joe Kinnear was looking "passion and desire" from his team, and he certainly got it.

It was Plymouth who took the lead after 29 minutes. Good build up play on the edge of the box, resulted in the ball falling to Chris Clark, who hit a stunning volley over keeper Artur Krysiak. Argyle took their advantage into half time, and under-fire Peter Reid, was sure to be happy with his players. Argyle edged the first half, and just about deserved their lead. Joe Kinnear sent his players out early for the 2nd half.

Exeter went out for the leveller, but after 68 minutes, Argyle were awarded a penalty. Steve Tully handling in the box, after a long ball foward. Joe Kinnear and the Exeter faithful were furious with referee Phil Dowd. Fallon stepped up, in front of the away support, only to see his penalty crash against the bar. Fallon was then crowded by Exeter defenders, who were relieved to see the penalty avoid the net. This was the turning point in the derby, as Exeter steamed foward in numbers...

3 Minutes after the penalty, and Exeter were level. A good corner from Richard Duffy, was headed in from an un-marked Matt Taylor. It was poor Plymouth defending, but the Exeter fans were thrown into raptures, as Chelsea Dagger was thrown across St James Park. A Few fans broke onto the pitch, but were dealt with swifly, by matchday stewards.

With the match heading for a draw, Steve Maclean broke through on goal, in the 88th minute. Maclean was hacked down by goalscorer Matt Taylor, who put his club first- Of course he was sent off, but Joe Kinnear will be delighted with Taylor's commitment. The free-kick was sent high and wide, which was thought to confirm the draw, at St James Park. Joe Kinnear sent his players foward, in search of a stoppage goal nonetheless...

In the 92nd minute, Steve Tully crossed in where Daniel Nardiello smashed home into the back of the net. The Exeter fans went wild! They couldn't believe it! Even the Exeter goalkeeper joined in with celebrations, in front of the Exeter support, who had seen one of the most amazing matches of the season. Exeter held out to the final whistle, were a famous Devon Derby victory was sealed. This was a night not to forget for the Exeter fans, as Argyle fans trudged away dissapointed. Exeter were well above Argyle in the league and maybe just maybe the tides have turned in Devon....

Looking Ahead- January 2011.

Exeter had an exciting new year to look foward too, as they battled for a top 6 place. The belief at St James Park was at an all time high, and that will be looked to carried on through the new year and into May. Exeter will start the year with home matches in quick succession, playing Carlisle and then Dagenham & Redbridge. A Tricky away match against Oldham before, Swindon at home- Where Exeter will be looking to put a 4-0 loss earlier on in the season behind them. The month is then finished with tricky away matches against Leyton Orient & Walsall. Joe Kinnear will be expecting 8 points from January.

January 2011- Slowing Down

After a fantastic start to their season, Exeter had a real chance of promotion. After negioating a tough December, a majority of Grecians fans could be forgiven for thinking January would be an easy ride. Exeter's chance of Championship Football was there for the taking, but would it be took?

V Carlisle- St James Park- nPower League 1- Win 1-0 [Archibald-Henville] :
Exeter got off to a winning start in 2011, with Troy Archibald Henvile's first ever career goal. He headed home with 39 minutes on the clock, from a corner. The win was enough for the Grecians, and moved them closer to the playoffs- Once again Exeter's defence held firm.

V Dagenham & Redbridge- St James Park- nPower League 1- Draw 2-2 [O'Flynn & Tully] :
Exeter scraped once more to a 2-2 draw against Dagenham & Redbridge. Exeter got off to a flying start, when after 2 minutes John O'Flynn scored from inside the box. However Exeter were the architects of their own downfall- They gave away 2 penaltys, one after 15 minutes and another after 83 minutes. Both were slotted home by Mark Arber- But it was Steve Tully who saved Exeter 2 minutes from time, tapping home from close range after a Giles Sunu cross- Relief across St James Park.

V Oldham- Boundary Park- nPower League 1- Loss 3-1 [Sunu] :
Exeter suffered their first loss of the season, in a poor match against Oldham. Once again Exeter got off to the perfect start, Giles Sunu after 4 minutes making the most of a defensive mistake to slot home from 12 yards. It only took 15 minutes for Oldham to level, Warren Feeney played through, and slotted home, Dale Stephens give Oldham the lead late on, and Warren Feeney rounded it off with 10 minutes left. Exeter were poor, as Oldham deserved their win.

V Swindon- St James Park- nPower League 1- Loss 1-0 :
Swindon took the spoils in a scrappy game at St James Park. Jon-Paul Mcgovern's long range effort after 59 minutes found a way past Artur Krysiak, and it was enough for Swindon to win the match. Exeter were poor up front, and will need more attacking options.

V Leyton Orient- Brisbane Road- nPower League 1- Draw 1-1 [Golbourne] :
Exeter were once more outplayed on the road, but managed to take a share of the points against Leyton Orient. Exeter took the lead after Scot Golbourne was played through to tap home from close range, just before the half time mark. Leyton Orient's dominance in the match was never really shown in goals, and Orient needed a Ben Chorley penalty 20 minutes from time to save them from defeat.

V Walsall- The Bescot Stadium- nPower League 1- Loss 2-1 [Jankauskas] :
Outplayed once more- A Worrying habit for Joe Kinnear's Exeter side as they stummbled to defeat against Walsall. Jon Macken's 35th minute close range effort give Walsall the lead, but just 5 minutes later new signing Edgaras Jankauskas tapped in from close range. Walsall took the win after a long ball foward, somehow found the head of Jon Macken, who watched the ball loop over the head of the Exeter Keeper.

Joe Kinnear will have alot to worry about, after a poor January. Exeter's trouble's summed up by a lack of goals- And a poor defence. Kinnear can only hope that Exeter's February is improved is bettter, or Exeter could face dropping out the playoff push- 12 Points off 6 place, its an up-hill battle from here for the Grecians.

January 2011- Transfer Round-Up

It was a busy January Transfer Window for boss Joe Kinnear, and his team. 4 players joined Exeter, and their is still interest in 1 or 2 more. However, nobody left St James Park, but players are expected to leave in the summer- Jamie Cureton & John O'Flynn have had tense speculation linking them away from the club.

The first of Exeter's signings was former Norwich midfielder, Paul McVeigh. The Irishman joins on a free transfer, after being released from the Caniries in the Summer. Paul was "delighted" to be back in football. 3 days after the capture of McVeigh, Exeter confirmed the signing of Lithunian striker, Edgaras Jankauskas- Once more on a free transfer. He has scored 10 goals for his national side, and will be looking to add to his club collection. The final confirmed signings over the transfer window were strikers- Both on loan- Piotr Parzyszek from Manchester United and Simon Andras from Liverpool. They will be at the club for 3 months, and will boost Exeter's weak front-line.

Joe Kinnear was devasted that defender Holmar Eyjolfsson rejected Exeter to join MK Dons on loan, and is thus looking for a new Centre Back. There have been many speculated targets, including Karl Magnay from Chelsea. Exeter have also been linked with re-signing Conor Clifford from Chelsea on loan along with another striker- Joao Silva from Everton.

It will be interesting to see what Exeter's new signings can do at St James Park, and whether speculated transfers will go through- We want your comments on the deals!

Coming Up- February 2011

Exeter will be looking to get their playoff push back on track, and close the gap on 6th place. They will be looking for the perfect start against strugglers Colchester, at St James Park, who they beat 4-1 back in September. Southampton then visit St James Park, in which will be a tricky match for the Grecians. Its then more tough fixtures, this time away against MK Dons & Peterborough- The Posh were defeated by Exeter, the last time the sides met. The month is ended with bottom club Tranmere, visiting St James Park- Joe Kinnear will be wanting at least 7 points from this month.

BBC Football Predictions-

Exeter 2 - 1 Colchester
Exeter 0 - 3 Southampton
MK Dons 1 - 1 Exeter
Peterborough 3 - 1 Exeter
Exeter 2 - 0 Tranmere

Clifford & Hoyte Join Loan List At City
Exeter Squad Bolstered For Playoff Push

Exeter City have confirmed the signings of midfielder Conor Clifford on loan from Chelsea and defender Gavin Hoyte on loan from Arsenal. The news come after Joe Kinnear admitted he was looking for 1 or 2 more signings, and these will be sure to bolster the City squad. Kinnear said the signings "Are of good League 1 quality, and are fantastic prospects for the future."

Conor Clifford has been brang in after captain Ryan Harley dislocated his shoulder, and will be out for 2 months. Clifford has previously made 22 appereances for The Grecians, earlier on in the season. The Irishman is known as a hardman, hardworking midfielder and was a great assest for Exeter earlier in the season.

Gavin Hoyte has been signed after Kinnear's number one target Holmar Eyjolfsson rejected Exeter, for MK Dons. Hoyte made 19 appereances on loan at Brighton, in League 1, last season and has featured 2 times for Arsenal in the Premier League. Exeter have been missing a rock at the heart of their defence, as leaking goals has become a problem for the Devon side. Other disipcline issues in Exeter's defence, has made Kinnear bring in an extra defender.

Exeter are pushing for a top 6 finish in League 1 this season, and two new players will be big news for City, as they look to carry-on their good start to the season.

I'm going to do an update from February until the end of the season- Then sometime after that, a report on each players season. :)

Good to see some of our 'friends' down the road jumping ship and coming over to the Pride of Devon. Well done mate.

Edit: Particularly liked the bit when Nards scored a last minute winner against the scum, brings back some memories :)

This looks good. Its nice to see a story where the person isn't trying to survive relegation, or win the league.

Didnt beat us when it matterd did you :)

I dunno, we've got a good chance of being in another cup final, and we're still above you in the league, with games in hand. (And we've got enough money to pay our players, and guarantee us a club next season, whereas you boys look like you'll be supporting Plymouth Parkway next season. Things are looking fairly rosey up this side of the A38.

UTC

(Anyway, back to the story, has it ever actually been known as the 'Devon Expressway Derby'? I've heard Devon Derby, Westcounty Derby and the A38 Derby. Is that just a name you've floated off of the top of your head or are you doing it for the geographically challenged

Anyway, they've been saying that the moneys been on its way ever since all your trouble started, doesn't look like it's coming in a hurry. Kagami looks like he's dissappeared too, the plymouth Herald can't find him anywhere, and apparently a few boys from pasoti are supposed to be going out there to find him, he's a clever bloke, he's seen a sinking ship, and bailed out.

Anyway, in all honesty mate, before we played you in the JPT I wanted you to survive, but your 'hard men' punching children, the elderly, and people wearing no colours has put me right off you cornish inbreds, so **** the lot of you.

All together now 'What's that coming over the hill is it the taxman, is it the taaxmannn?

Serves all you ***** right for getting all cocky. where were the so called sly crew? <snigger>

From times long gone mate, no need for the slys to come out until they're attacked, unlike TCE who are only useful for fighting our wee kiddies, but it might be fair, the webbed feet probably puts your cornish boys at a disadvantage. I take it you were in amongst the fighting, like the hardman you're pretending to be would?

Anyway, sorry for whover's story this is, as soon as I saw how easy it would be to wind this joker up I had to keep going. Good luck with your game.
